[Q] Have Made The Switch From THE EVIL AT&T Empire!! - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So At&t Finally got Ballsy and changed my unlimited data plan on my Atrix 4g. needless to say it breached my contract and i got out of there.. Now, here is my dillemma. I have everything working, Phone Data SMS. but im stuck on edge , i know its because of the missing 1700mhz band, but seeing how its a standard radio and a world phone, there has got to be a way to modify the frequencies it scans right? o ya im on the tmo network, which is the only gsm provider which is close enough to be able to use the atrix fully, any help guys would be greatly appreciated , and i have NO problem donating to anyone who might be able to solve this,

It's a hardware thing. In the U.S., the only frequencies the Atrix can use for 3G/HSPA+ is 850/1900. Whereas T-mobile uses 1700/2100.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...nt-4g-hspa-phone-will-not-be-covered-by-both/
Now, don't take my word for it but I believe the 2100 UMTS band (which is essentially the HSPA band) is for using as a "World Phone", meaning it can access 3G bands abroad but not here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
Also, the 2100 band that T-mo uses is an AWS band which AT&T cannot use at all. I just wanted to point out that there are some underlying technologies that probably cannot be altered by software.

Not to get off topic but why did they change your unlimited plan?

Because of "tethering" , which is described in many ways all except which are correct and "high data usage"

Switching T-mobile to AT&T

I have T-Mobile PPC phone and will be switching to AT&T service soon. My phone is unlocked so this is not an issue.
If anybody has already gone through this is it worth to upgrade both radio and ROM to AT&T versions or leave T-Mobile in place? Any other issues I shall be corncerned about?
if you are going on to ATT and plan to use their GPRS you may want to upgrade as the siemens upgrade is the lates so far and include ATT's proxy setting to get a little xtra compresion of stream. In addition ATT uses variation of GSM standards you will get the best experience using their radio stack. You can still use T-Mo's but your GPRS will be flaky as hell. :?
not sure if i get this right...
i was under the impression that tmobile uses 1800mhz and att uses 1900 that is why the A adnd B models for tmobile and ATT respectivelu,
if i understand this right u wont be getting the best of signal strength even though it might work!!
some one correct me if i am wrong
Some people manage to get a passable signal but most cannot manage to keep a signal outside of the hardware band, try tuning a radio station 100 mhz off tune and see how it sounds. You will be operating outside the band and at best it will be flaky, at worst it just wont work.
tmobile using 1800mhz/Att 1900mhz.

This is the first that I have heard this, but believe it. I went from AT&T to T-Mobile, and it works, but not near as well as ATT. Is there a way to switch it to the 1800mhz, or is this a hardware setting? I don't want to get ride of my SX56, I love it, but I do need better quality.
Thanks,
Darren

You're wrong. The A/B models differentiate the North American market from the rest of the world. It's not ATT vs. TMo.
i went from att to t-mo the first day possible. given my experiences with att and t-mo i would STRONGLY encourage users to skip att and go with t-mo if the two are your consideration set. att's service is horrible and cust service even worse. t-mo has been better all around, unless you're trying to make and receive calls from rural areas.
t-mo is the way, imo.
I agree that customer service in TMo is great, the only problem is that I don't get any TMo signal in my office while AT&T shows full strength. So I don't have my choice.
I'm a recent switcher
Although i had good experiences with T mo. I recently switched because i needed a family plan that gave me the most minutes. So far customer service has been horrible but, phone service has not been an issue. As for upgrading goes i had no problems. All i did was download and install the ROM upgrade via sync cradle. Of course since that i've install the 4.00.5 ROM from Yorch's kitchen.
Advice: stick with T Mo. if you can however, ATT is an ok alternative if you don't have to call customer service.
FYI: Cingular is purchasing ATT wireless. maybe it will be for the best.

[Q]

Hi, Just purchased the hd2 T Mobile from USA. Which carriers can I use in Canada to activate this Phone? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
any of them(well, except any cdma only ones) but you will need an unlock code from online or from t mobile, and you won't get 3g
Thanks for the help samsamuel. I took it to one carrier and they told me it wouldn't work. The phone is unlocked. Why wouldn't I get the 3G.I want the plan that gives me internet mobile browsing. PS it was fido I took it to.
because fido uses 1900 for 3g, from what i've read, and the tmous uses 1700/2100 for 3g., and i think rogers uses 850/1900 and maybe 1900/2100 (just skimming google for this infofact is, though, that without the 1700 aws band,, no high speed data.
you will be able to get gprs and edge for browsing, but no 3g/hsdpa.
as to them saying it won't work, they're probably either making it up or meaning 3g
most canadian users fork out the extra for the telstra model if they want 3g.
Thanks. I guess this phone is useless to me, as I wanted to be able to access the internet without using the wifi.

you can, but only with gprs / edge speeds.
I had been considering buying an HD2 and trying to unlock it for use with an AT&T sim card for my current account. I knew that their networks were compatible, but I didn't realize that hsdpa was on different frequencies. I googled around a bit and it looks like AT&T uses 1900 mhz and Tmo uses 1700/2100. I can't verify if this info is correct ,but this could sure put a dent in my plans. Does anyone know for sure if an HD2 can be used on AT&T's 3g network?
there are several threads about how you can't. go read in the tmous specific section. plenty of confirmation that it doesn't.
3G Frequencies
Hi there!
I was wondering if there is a way to change those settings?? I have a T-Mo HD2, and maybe there is a way to make the phone work with the 3G technology in other frequencies besides the 1700 and 2100 MHz (I live in latin america, so it would have to use the 850Mhz frequency) Anyone please help me with this issue.
As one who unlocked a TMoUS HD2 to AT&T I can assure you that you will not get 3G anywhere in the US or Canada that I can find. On a bright note, it's a phone... With everyone else using 3G networks I find the Edge network to be utterly "unclogged" and find the speeds to be just fine for everything including streaming video.
PS: The phone was free but without a SIM card and I was an AT&T user - not to mention T-Mobile's network leaves a lot to be desired..
There is 3g service in Canada if you happen to be in an area where Wind Mobile is available. search Wind mobile coverage area.
We (family)have several cell phones I use the HD 2 on Edge and it doesn't bother me that its a little slower, actually when I did a quick check with my daughter on her 3g I hardly could tell the difference. I' m sure some will point out where I'm wrong. But I'm satisfied with edge because I enjoy the HD2.
Wind Mobile uses 1700/2100.

Any T-Mobile USA users get the phone yet?

I'm thinking about picking one up for review. I'm on T-Mobile and I know the phones come unlocked, but I want to be sure there aren't any hidden surprises or anything like that. If I put in a T-Mobile USA sim card, am I guaranteed to get Edge signal?
Where did you find out that this phone will come unlocked on T-Mobile?

He never said that.
He asked if the unlocked i9100 will at least get edge on tmobile network.
good question..wonder if anybody will get it
I think most of the world uses the same frequencies for UMTS EDGE, so yes... an international Galaxy S II should work on T-mobile with EDGE, though you will have to program all of the tower/apn data into the phone manually to get everything to work
Probably not worth extra cost and effort to get a phone which will always be slow due to frequency mis-match.
It would only work on 2g for T-mobile USA.
I'll enjoy the G2X for now and then switch to the SGS2 when it get's to T-Mobile.

Bump, still wondering if ant T-Mobile users got the phone yet.
I've placed an order with Handtec, but thanks to a long back-and-forth security process I have to wait for next weeks batch of devices (ugh).
I'm assuming 2g will work fine - I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't. I've bought international phones for use on T-mo back in the pre-3g days, which in a way I'm still stuck in. Rural Iowa is not exactly blanketed in 3g...
Off-topic.
http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/05/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-passes-fcc-with-att-3g-bands/

If you are to follow the naming convention above, then this new phone that passed the FCC should be for T-Mobile.
GT-I9100T (GS2) - T-Mobile
it will work on 2g but nothing else until the version that supports tmobiles AWS 3g/4g bands os released. im thinking about pulling the trigger anyways

3G/4G will not work as they use 1700/2100 instead of 850/1900
you'll only get EDGE/2G
Hi I have a SGS2 on tmobile USA. Here are the issues. I phone is ASIA version rooted.
Tried a few mods didnt like it much.
Big issue is the phone defaults to GSM (2g) and the only other option on the phone is WCDMA. On tmobile it doesnt show edge or HSPA so I can connect for faster speeds.
I went to the tmob store the guy said the firmware needs to be updated but samsung doesnt have anything new.
I am hoping to download stock mod from say europe or canada that enables 4G to see if itll work on tmob. I called tmob they said they cant help as they dont support the phone! i asked for the bands that tmob uses 3G/4G on ( they refused to give it to me)
Tmob came in late in the game for 3g/4g so im not sure if they are on some diff bands that the phone cant catch. although i have not tried inserting an Att sim in it to see if it will get 4g speeds.
if anyone knows of any other options please let me know at this point im paying for 4G speeds on tmob but getting 2G.

Dude, the GS2 doesn't support T-mobile bands. Therefore you'll only get EDGE speed on that phone until you get their Variant or switch to AT&T.

You can never get past 2g on T-Mobile, ever. It's a hardware issue not software, you are stuck with EDGE speeds unless you switch to AT&T.
Thanks... I guess ill be selling this phone if I have to remain on Tmob.. or get me an atnt account! tmob has the least expensive plans .

UK phone in US - 3G does not work.

I just purchased a SG SII here in the US and later found out it is a UK phone (the sales rep said it was a US model)
anyway, the phone works great EXCEPT it will not log onto T-Mobiles 3G network. All I get is EDGE which is terrible.
How can I get it to go to 3G?
Spoke with T-Mobile, even got a new sim card. No help
Spoke wth Samsung US - they tried, could not help and then said to contact the UK.
Called Samsung UK and they said it should work, if not, bring it back as it is broken!
anyway, is there some sort of settings that I can change to make it work in the US.
I also need it to work in Brazil as I will be going there and will be using the Brazilian Tim network and installing their sim card.
thank you for your assistance in advance.
The phone is suppose to be:
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Did you limit the phone to only work with 2G in the settings?
Check Wireless Network settings.
Much more better would be goto Settings->About phone, tell us what Baseband, and Kernel, and ROM version you are using.
Reboot phone.

Exactly, that phone will never work on T-Mobile USA 3G network, refund it or switch to AT&T. Makes you wish someone would regulate mobile networks here.
Edit: SGS2 should work fine on TIM Brazil.
you guys are absolutely certain that this phone will not work on T-Mobile?
what about certainty that it will work on Tim? I live in Brazil and defintely need it to work there.
Here, in the US, when I return next year, I can alway switch over to AT+T.
I need to be certain because if I get to brazil and it does not work, I am screwed because then it is almost impossible to get anything done to it.
BTW- they have been saying that t-mobile will have this same phone in a few months. How will that one be able to work? will it be possible to flash that info to this phone when it comes out?
thanks

The US T-mobile Variant is completely different from the UK model, won't be the same. Also it's true you can never get 3G with T-Mobile, don't know anything about TIM though.
T-Mobile uses the 1700 AWS band which this phone does not use so yes... You will NEVER get 3g or HSPA+ with T-Mobile U.S.

so when you say fine, the phone, 3g to get to the internet, etc etc will all work?
as it is here, the phone works great and when with wi-fi, the internet is great but EDGE sucks ass.
So, as I already know that I am beating the dead horse. 3G here with T-Mobile is never going to happen but it will work with AT+T, in Brazil, the phone for calls will work fine, 3G will also work fine too.
does anyone know about claro, vivo or oi in brazil? just wondering....
and what about other carriers in the US, will it work with anyone beside AT+T?
thanks again. this has been very useful!
EDGE runs on GPRS. Your phone matches TIM's UMTS frequencies so it will have 3G data on that network.

Why would you buy a phone without checking on what radio bands it works , its not like US has only one provider they all have different bands/frequencies.

Truesmart kicked off ATT - "2G phone"

Not surprising, but now that ATT and others are shutting down 2G (so they say) my truesmart stopped working. Trying to explain to them that the phone does do 3G on 1900 is pointless. They don't care.
Does anyone know how they are stopping these phones from using their system? Is there a way to lock the phone into 3G 1900 *only* ? Are there any other *prepaid* carriers that use 1900 in the US that are more lenient with this?
I would like to still be able to use my phone and no desire to upgrade right now.
Thanks,
Betsy
You can try TMobile or Ting. Ting has special packages ideal for wearables. They will have 2 more years of support.
