Hey everyone. I've had my phone for awhile now, and I love it. I've got it rooted and all that. I've played with a few custom kernals and roms, but I'm getting overwhelmed.
Heres my phones current setup

Here's what I want to do...
COMPLETELY wipe my phone. Back to stock. I've already got my hands on Odin, the stock Modem, Firmware, Kernal, and CSC from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193695
I've been thinking about using the I9100XXKI3 or I9100XXKI4 (from the above mentioned thread) for the Modem and DXKL3 from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) for the firmware...Anyone got any Pro's & Con's? You know, upon further reading I think that the DXKL3 package will overwrite everything to the latest official stuff. Can anyone clear this up for me?
Anyways, after that I want to root it, put on the Speedmod Kernal (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498) again or SiyahKernal (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838), and maybe a custom ROM.
Now you're probably asking yourself "Wheres the question here?" Well, here it is...
I need someone to assist me in doing everything in the correct order so I don't run the risk of bricking anything. Anyone care to help? Please?
EDIT: I should let everyone in on my Android skills. I have it rooted, and I have the speedmod done. However, I followed some random guides on the back alleys of the internet and I'm not totally confident that I did everything correct, hence me wanting to completely wipe it all. I should also add that while I understand the basics, when using Odin I can get confused about what goes in the PDA, Phone, and CSC sections. I know not to have Re-Partition and Flash-Lock checked, and to pretty much leave PIT and BOOTLOADER alone.

At first i used uodin but its mucha easy toi use cwm juste download a zip file you want to flash and go in recovery and installe it after wipe cache and dalvick cache it you will feel more confiant in cwm than odin trust me!

I bought the phone from Bell. Root(CF-Root). Unlocked. Flash new stock rom(XXKI3/2.3.5) via Odin(Download from Original Android section). Now my GT-I9100M is just GT-I9100. Then AOSP. Now 2.3.7
Steps:
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278
2. Find a firmware. Any will work. Preferably non-Frankenstein but its up to you.
3. Download the firmware and Stock Kernel
4. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1103399
5. Find the CF-Root matching your firmware. (i.e I downloaded the XXKI3 firmware. I then found the KI3 version of CF-Root)
6. Install Kies.
7. Open Odin.
8. Reboot your phone into Download Mode. (Shut down your phone and then use the combo Volume Down+Home+Power until download mode comes up.
9. Connect to PC.
Look at this again for instructions in flashing (1st post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278
10. After flashing the firmware(after reboot and enter download mode again), click on PDA and choose the CF-Root kernel.
11. Flash.
12. Done! You are now rooted on stock rom. And now you have access to ClockWorkMod(CWM) Combo to enter CWM is Volume up+home+power.

Oh and after root, you can unlock your phone too! I foolishly paid $60 to unlock my phone but you can do it for free after root!

I wiped it. I'm noticing a few weird things...
First, right after the wipe, the language was German. It was an easy fix, but still kind of weird.
Secondly, the intro animation of the S is orange, rather than the blue (which it originally was) Any ideas about this one?
Third and final, at first it wouldn't connect to my Bell network, or my home wireless. I found out that it was in Flight Mode by default. Anyways, a quick power cycle fixed that.
The phone is fine now, aside from the color orange S thing. I'm going to flash Intratech's DXKL3 firmware now.
UPDATE: I flashed DXKL3, which according to the thread, should update the phone to 2.3.6

I believe the CSC for that rom is German. What file did you flash with odin?? I also believe you only flashed the kernel file

My SGSII was bought unbranded with the following software PDA:XWKE7 - PHONE: XXKE4 - CSC: UXKD3 - Build date: 5/18 KST 2011 and it is only 5 days old so I don't want to ruin it just yet
I've flashed an insecure kernel that was the same as the kernel that my SGSII had originally (PDA:XWKE7) with Odin following the instruction in this post

It took me a few tries before I saw that I had to install Samsung's KIES program first, I know it is in the instructions but it could be shown a little clearer imho.
And I've flashed a secure kernel (same version) back so that there's no more yellow triangle.
Now for the questions:
I don't seem to have the CWM recovery, what do I have to do for that?
With what I've done will I still be able to get the Samsung updates, it currently says "This version cannot be updated"? (I may not really want that)
I now actually still have the same phone that I bought, how do I go about actually upgrading, can I just install (using Odin) the latest of all 3 things (PDA,PHONE,CSC) or do I need something for that or should I match certain things like some version of PDA only goes with some version of PHONE.
Can I flash new things just using the phone, it looks like everything has to be done with Odin, on the HTC phones I found it more comfortable to flash on the phone itself (no risk of computer crashing or cable disconnecting...)

The thing that still eludes me is that most posts like that talk about having the correct firmware but then how can I upgrade or do I have to do that at once kernel+firmware?

You generally flash both kernel and firmware at the same time, either via ODIN, or CWM (depending on what you are doing).
Kernels ship with ROMs. So the KF2 ROM has the KF2 kernel with it.

Hi, i am comming from HTC Desire, like you.
I will try to answer your questions, but be aware some of my answers may be inaccurate because of lack of expertise.
1) you have to use the CF-Root kernel, appropriate to your ROM version (e.g. KE7 CF-Root kernel with a PDA:XWKE7) to have CWM.
Please notice, that CWM on Samsung phone is much like ROM Manager on HTC Desire (a "normal" Android application, not a bootmanager extension !)
To get rid of the yellow triangle while using the CF-Root kernel a workaround is needed ( i havent tried this yet):
1.1 - flash CF-Root (Odin)
1.2 - flash original kernel back (Odin), i mean KERNEL (8MB) and not the whole ROM (500MB)
1.3 - flash the zimage file inside of the CF-Root *.tar file ( unclear how, through CWM ???)
2) you can still flash official Samsung updates after flashing a custom ROM or kernel. Just use Odin instead of Kies. You can get the official Samsung firmwares here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
3.) I would recommend to flash only the PDA (depending or a ROM, that you choose) or a complete official ROM containing all three parts (PDA+CSC+RADIO).
I wouldnt flash the CSC, as it apparently contains regional settings (e.g. dutch/french menus in case of Belgium).
I am not sure whether all RADIOs work flawlessly with all the PDAs ... Usually ROM cooker shold take care of this. I would recommend to use a RADIO for your region (if not recommended otherwise by ROM cooker).
4.) I recommend to flash using Odin, because its firmware independent. By my opinion Samsungs way is the more secure, because you don't need to flash the bootmanager ! You can fall bak to official firmware, or reflash again, any time using the original bootmanager + Odin. Flashing bootmager on HTC Desire was the most risky operation (fail = bricked phone). S-OFF isn't needed for Samsung too.
5.) by my opinion:
PDA = ROM (kernel+software)
PHONE = modem
CSC = regional settings (localized menus)

1.) you CAN'T boot into CWM on SGS II like on HTC Desire. CWM is not a part of bootmager, but CWM is just an application.
CWM on SGS II is like ROM Manager on HTC Desire.
This means, you can enter the CWM only by
- starting the CWM application(or ROM Manager on HTC Desire)
- choosing reboot into CWM (puts CWM application to CACHE, reboots)
- waiting until the CWM starts from CACHE (temporary stored)
if you however try to manually enter the bootloader mode, you end up with the Samsungs stock bootmanager (and Odin).
This means, the CWM isn't usable on Samsung phones as the last instance for help, in case of destroyed ROM. Because with a destroyed ROM (PDA) you cant push the CWM into CACHE and force the phone to boot with CWM.
You can only use the bootloader, which isn't altered by the CWM in any way (on HTC Desire, HTC Desire the bootloader is replaced by a custom bootloader, which includes CWM).
Therefore CWM on Samsung makes no sense for me (nobody can't use CWM to flash a new ROM, if the current ROM isn't working). The only partially usable feature of CWM is the Nandroid (which works in a quite limited way, as it doesnt restore RADIO or CSC).
2.) i do remember flashing new ROMs (only PDA) on SGS II without having to reinstall applications (mainly Stock ROMs and Lightning ROMs, which seems to be compatible regarding applications).
I do recommend a Nandroid (through CWM) + Titanium backup in any case, before installing a new ROM. you can return to previous state later (but not as easily, as i would expect from Nandroid ...).
Hi, newbie as you'll soon guess so, please do bear with me if you can, my post is sent whilst blood pressure is a little high
I decided to root and install a custom rom today, which, to be fair, i did manage and has worked fine. I opted for lite'ning rom using odin 1.85 and following the very well wrote and simple instructions.
After a while however, I decided I wanted to go back to stock and went xda official roms and since in UK opted for Firmware info: PDA:XWKF3 PHONE: XXKE7 CarphoneWarehouse UK which i am *almost* certain I had before.
So, i run the .exe which creates the tar, run odin as before. The installer appears to work but then loops forever, the logo coming up with the blue fragments. This doesn't stop, no matter how long I wait, or, on removing the battery.
I have rebooted the phone and gone back to lite'ning rom but is that it, can i never go back to stock?

Solution is:
In Download mode, Flash Original Rom kg6 whit Odin
Then do the same flashing the original rom KH3, but KH3 uses everything, do not use KE7
I think we have a winner, phew!!!!
Whilst phone was looping, and driving me loopy, i found a thread on android forums, sorry cannot link to is cos of being a newbie about litening rom killing my batter
Also, what i did was:
1) flash from lite'ning to KE7
2) performed hard reset with buttons
3) wipe cache and user data
4) rebooted
5) prayed a little
Phone rebooted successfully and, i have just powered off/on to be doubly sure it worked fine.
Have checked the about phone and i am on:

Hi guys,
as you know some days ago, Samsung has leaked their SGS2 ICS firmware, which I learnt on sammobile.com.
In their article, was a tutorial to install it, so I did.
I tried it a bit, but have been desapointed, so I decided to flash back to MIUI.
Thus I first flash another kernel, but here my trouble start.
Long story short, if I don't use the leaked, buggy firmware, I have a "Kernel panic - upload mode" and Kies does not recognize my phone to flash it back to stock.
I figured out that in the tutorial I have been told to change some file I've never flashed (like the pit, the modem and I think the CSC). Files that I don't know anything about. So I thought that those files weren't compatible with previous kernel etc. but as I don't know much, I can't be sure...
So I am know with a very buggy phone (for instance, I cannot be phoned, but I can phone to people) or a kernel panic. Help please :/
By the way, if someone could explain the meaning of those files, it would be cool, not to do the same mistake again.
And as I think : in all the tutorials using ODIN, it's said the I must not check "re-partition", what is it about ?

Some updates here.
I thought yesterday, as there were those files (.pit, csc and stuff) in the downloaded archive on sammobile to flash leaked ICS, there were in the others firmware too, and I was right.
So this morning I flashed back to official 2.3.6 and it worked well. Then I flashed to xcell kernel (for Miui) and tried to flash MIUI 2.1.6. The kernel flash worked, as I rebooted normally but after flashing MIUI, another kernel panic :/
Did you wipe before flashing MIUI?
I did it after flashing, but still before rebooting.
Is that a mistake ?
If you wipe after flashing then your phone won't even boot.
So I think you did not wipe at all.
Yes I did, and I tried once again just now, wipping before flashing, but after the Samsung GS2 logo, still the kernel panic screen.
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Then read and learn before flashing anything else .

You shouldd stop flashing and start READING THE BASICS you are flashing test roms from complete ignorance .

Ok, I admit it, I was dumb doing it :-/
So now I am under stock both kernel and rom (2.3.5) and Kies says that there is an update but my phone isn't ok to do it, but that is not what I want.
I wanted to reset my phone through Kies to be sure all would be set to stock, but now Kies doesn't let me do it, there is no option to do it.
I think that the rom, even if official, is not good for my phone.
On the topic you linked, I choosed XXKI4 (France, if I understood well) for the rom.
Kies says my version is "I9100XWKJ2/I9100XEFKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100XWKJ2".
And my phone says :
- Banseband : I9100XXKI4
- Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI4-CL611039 [email protected] #2
- Version number : GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2.
Is that all ok ?
What I would like to do is flashing MIUI 2.1.6, so is it good to do it now ?

Well, i've tried everything so far, what i like more is..
Make a fresh flashing of the stock samsung firmware "XXKI4" 2.3.5 released in september, (make a full wipe before flashing with odin)
Note before Flashing:
Always leave checked the next options ONLY:
*Autoreboot
*F.Reset Time
and select the full firmware clicking in PDA, if the firmware comes separated with PHONE, CSC and MODEM, select the properly in each section.
*In case you flashed a Stock ICS Firmware from Samsung, to go back (ONLY TO GO BACK) TO Gingerbread BUILDS use a .PIT file wich contains the partition information tablet to re-partition the system directory (i've attached odin and .PIT for you). Going back from ICS to GB is the only reason you'll need to use REPARTITION and PIT file, ok?

I tried NEAK, Phenomenal, SpeedMOD, Lulz, Tegrak, everything.. wich i suggest you?

After Flashing the kernel install from Market VOLTAGE CONTROL, and change the Governor to "LULZACTIVE"
Now to customize a bit your ROM flash JKAY 13.1 Specific for XXKI4 Odexed
Launchers.. Damn i tried Many, Go Launcher, Launcher PRO, Zeam Launcher, Regina Launcher 3D Pro, SPB Shell 3D, the best for me was.. Launcher Pro and Zeam Launcher, Fast and simple.
You can try everything you want and choose what you like...
Remember to make wipes before flashing even in CWM, and an importan tool you can buy is a USB Jig, this will reset the custom binary counter in case you need to take your phone to the warranty, also removes the yellow triangle in the boot time, that yellow triangle means you flashed an insecure kernel, its insecure because you can use adb from the recovery. I think its all.. Check Original Development Section, Themes & Apps, and Developments Section. Read carefully and proceed.
Or wait until Monday and update over Kies to ICS Android 4.0.3
Think there is a easier way using Odin Mobile Pro, especially if you are new to all this flashing
Came from Nordic 2.3.5 and flashed Official ICS 4.0.3 without any problem

Do i have to upgrade to a ICS firmware before i can upgrade to JB or can i directly flash to JB ?
if i have to upgrade to a ICS firmware can you tell me which firmware i can use? if its a official firmware i have to root my phone before upgrading to JB..
i have made all nessasary backups incl CWM backup

Yes you need to flash Stock ICS custom rom (via CWM recovery) or firmware (via Odin) before flashing any JB rom.
Yes you can flash any ICS firmware (but flash 4.0.3, for safety), or just flash any Stock based Custom ROM.

ok so when i first flash the ICS firmware it is going to erase pretty much everything on the sdcard. so after the firm ICS firmware flash, i root the device then install the CWM-recovery, and then reflash the new AOKP-JB. i suppose when i do that i have to redo a CWM after ??
also even though i have backed up all the data, i keep reading not to restore data back onto the device after flashing a firmware/ROM. and to install all apps manually, is that true? or is there a better way to get all the apps onto the phone after i am done with installing AOKP?

1. No. Everything stored on your internal sdcard will be intact. Only your contacts, messages, applications and settings will be deleted. So you have to back them up
2. Probably yes.
What level are you now? Have you flashed the ICS firmware?
3. Never restore system apps and data. You can restore user apps but it's better you don't restore their data is possible.
How did you backup your data?

2. I still havent flashed the ICS firmware, i downloaded the firmware for the following:
Base Firmware: I9100XXLPQ (4.0.3)
Region Poland (XEO)
Build Date: 9th March 2012
Modem: XXLPQ
CSC: OXALPQ
Change List: 223505
3. I have backed up all the data, i used CWM to back up as well as tried using nandroid from the terminal emulator, but i havent found the file as i gave it a custome name as follows:
nandroid 10_7_12_nandroid_backup
so i was looking for a file "10_7_12_nandroid_backup.md5" i supose i am looking for a wrong file?!!
i looked into the back up folder for CWM in sdcard but only could find the folder with that date and time and a file nandroid.md5 and 4 other .img files inside, is this correct?
or is there a better way to back up ?

3. There is a Thanks button with thumbs up sign, under the person's username and details, to the farthest left on the same row as the Reply and quote buttons.

one more thing before i take the leap, any precautions with Odin version and CWM version. i was over the AOKP forums reading about people having issues with certain version not working very well. especially getting suck in Odin for a very long time. my USB storage on the phone says 11.5GB, and have seen users have issues when Odin runs and have their memory repartitioned or something like that. any words of wisdom will definitely boost my confidence

Everything should go on fine.
You can follow the flashing guide here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Also, don't repartition your phone. There's no need to do that.
1. Flash official ICS through Odin or Kies (for upgrading bootloader to ICS)
2. Root ICS stock ROM (boot to recovery, use fake recovery zip+through it flash siyahkernel, easiest because auto-root and no yellow triangle)
3. After getting Siyah, should reboot to recovery via CWM manager, wipe data/cache and format system then install AOKP JB-b4 and gapps.

FINALLY!!! i got time to upgrade the phone to JB milestone1, it was a breeze and quiet simple. the phone has been running great love the interface through Nova launch. Kudos to AOKP team and all you guys for helping me out....
I find it strange that after i wiped the whole data/system, Devlik etc .. and installing AOKP, i still see most of the applications i installed on the phone, none of them were wiped. only apps that i downloaded through amazon apps are no longer there. is this ok?
Also i have few issues and need help with it.
1. I accidentally deleted the apps icon in the dock and not i am not sure how to get to them. can any one tell me how to bring back the Icon?
SOLVED -- long press on home screen and nova launch pops up ...
2. I am looking for a keypad icon or phone icon to bring up the dialer, in GB i could get there through contacts and scrolling to get to keypad.
SOLVED .. i am not sure how to bring that up here once i could go to apps i and drag the dial icon onto the dock
3. I want to create a shortcut to a folder on the SD card on the desktop, as i keep accessing few files in that folder can you tell me how to do this?
SOLVED .. long press on any folder on Root explorer and it gives an option to place a short cut for that folder
6. Also I tried installing Swype keyboard beta, has anyone tried installing it on SG2i9100 running AOKP milesone1? i cant get it to finish installing.

4. i would like to rearrange the app icons in the apps page (after clicking apps icon). a long press on any icon takes me to desktop, i cant menu click and do edit as like in GB to move icons around, any way to do this?
5. i tried changing the colors of the wireless signal and battery icons in the AOKP system menu, and they dont change colors. the icon can change into text etc ... but not colors, its the same with colors in notification bar, what do i do to make this work?
