[Q] Semi-bricked S2? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, newbie as you'll soon guess so, please do bear with me if you can, my post is sent whilst blood pressure is a little high
I decided to root and install a custom rom today, which, to be fair, i did manage and has worked fine. I opted for lite'ning rom using odin 1.85 and following the very well wrote and simple instructions.
After a while however, I decided I wanted to go back to stock and went xda official roms and since in UK opted for Firmware info: PDA:XWKF3 PHONE: XXKE7 CarphoneWarehouse UK which i am *almost* certain I had before.
So, i run the .exe which creates the tar, run odin as before. The installer appears to work but then loops forever, the logo coming up with the blue fragments. This doesn't stop, no matter how long I wait, or, on removing the battery.
I have rebooted the phone and gone back to lite'ning rom but is that it, can i never go back to stock?
Again, apologies and thanks

Solution is:
In Download mode, Flash Original Rom kg6 whit Odin
Then do the same flashing the original rom KH3, but KH3 uses everything, do not use KE7

I think we have a winner, phew!!!!
Whilst phone was looping, and driving me loopy, i found a thread on android forums, sorry cannot link to is cos of being a newbie about litening rom killing my batter
Also, what i did was:
1) flash from lite'ning to KE7
2) performed hard reset with buttons
3) wipe cache and user data
4) rebooted
5) prayed a little
Phone rebooted successfully and, i have just powered off/on to be doubly sure it worked fine.
Have checked the about phone and i am on:
2.3.3
I9100XXKE7
2.6.35.7-19100XWKF3-CL276555

That was a fun way to scare one's self on a sunday afternoon

[Q] What does it all mean??

First of all, I apologise if this is the wrong forum to post this on. I'm not new to the Custom ROM scene, having come from my HTC Desire. However, the SGS2 is my first Samsung product, and hence a few of the terms are rather confusing to me, and I hope this'll help somebody else as well besides me.
1. Why are there so many different kernels? KF1? KF2? XXKF1? XXKF2? What're the differences? Can I flash a KF1 kernel into a phone that already has KF2?
2. What's the difference between an i9100 and an i9100T? Can I flash a kernel designed for an i9100 into an i9100T phone?
3. What do the different shipped modems mean (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950)? How are they relevant when I'm choosing which ROM to flash into my phone?
4. What's a HIDSWVER and why are we collecting it (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089874)?
You know there's a Q&A section right?
(agreed that this should be moved to the Q&A section of the forum!)
Hi I'm in the same situation as you, I was just preparing a similar question but will add it to yours, perhaps there are more HTC (Desire) converts coming that might be interested in this kind of FAQ
My SGSII was bought unbranded with the following software PDA:XWKE7 - PHONE: XXKE4 - CSC: UXKD3 - Build date: 5/18 KST 2011 and it is only 5 days old so I don't want to ruin it just yet
I've flashed an insecure kernel that was the same as the kernel that my SGSII had originally (PDA:XWKE7) with Odin following the instruction in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
It took me a few tries before I saw that I had to install Samsung's KIES program first, I know it is in the instructions but it could be shown a little clearer imho.
And I've flashed a secure kernel (same version) back so that there's no more yellow triangle.
Now for the questions:
I don't seem to have the CWM recovery, what do I have to do for that?
With what I've done will I still be able to get the Samsung updates, it currently says "This version cannot be updated"? (I may not really want that)
I now actually still have the same phone that I bought, how do I go about actually upgrading, can I just install (using Odin) the latest of all 3 things (PDA,PHONE,CSC) or do I need something for that or should I match certain things like some version of PDA only goes with some version of PHONE.
Can I flash new things just using the phone, it looks like everything has to be done with Odin, on the HTC phones I found it more comfortable to flash on the phone itself (no risk of computer crashing or cable disconnecting...)
PDA is kernel PHONE presumably is modem, what is CSC?
Edit2: found some of the info here:
found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
but still not clear on CWM, and what can be flashed and when.
Edit: Perhaps I just need CWM so that I can start experimenting once I have a nandroid backup, I've found this [KERNEL] ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.0.5 // Initramfs Template for Devs but it is not really clear if that will install a new kernel (which one?) or only CWM, can I install that on my phone, it doesn't seem to root ... questions ... questions ...

I seem to have a HIDSWVER that had not been reported yet, I posted it in that thread.
I9100XWKE7/I9100LUXKD3/I9100XXKE4/I9100XWKE7 - Belgium unbranded
Product code GT-I9100LKALUX
I got CWM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I jumped the gun even though it is a XEU version and my phone has LUX, doing a nandroid now, will feel a lot safer when that is working
The thing that still eludes me is that most posts like that talk about having the correct firmware but then how can I upgrade or do I have to do that at once kernel+firmware?

You generally flash both kernel and firmware at the same time, either via ODIN, or CWM (depending on what you are doing).
Kernels ship with ROMs. So the KF2 ROM has the KF2 kernel with it.

Hi, i am comming from HTC Desire, like you.
I will try to answer your questions, but be aware some of my answers may be inaccurate because of lack of expertise.
1) you have to use the CF-Root kernel, appropriate to your ROM version (e.g. KE7 CF-Root kernel with a PDA:XWKE7) to have CWM.
Please notice, that CWM on Samsung phone is much like ROM Manager on HTC Desire (a "normal" Android application, not a bootmanager extension !)
To get rid of the yellow triangle while using the CF-Root kernel a workaround is needed ( i havent tried this yet):
1.1 - flash CF-Root (Odin)
1.2 - flash original kernel back (Odin), i mean KERNEL (8MB) and not the whole ROM (500MB)
1.3 - flash the zimage file inside of the CF-Root *.tar file ( unclear how, through CWM ???)
2) you can still flash official Samsung updates after flashing a custom ROM or kernel. Just use Odin instead of Kies. You can get the official Samsung firmwares here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
3.) I would recommend to flash only the PDA (depending or a ROM, that you choose) or a complete official ROM containing all three parts (PDA+CSC+RADIO).
I wouldnt flash the CSC, as it apparently contains regional settings (e.g. dutch/french menus in case of Belgium).
I am not sure whether all RADIOs work flawlessly with all the PDAs ... Usually ROM cooker shold take care of this. I would recommend to use a RADIO for your region (if not recommended otherwise by ROM cooker).
4.) I recommend to flash using Odin, because its firmware independent. By my opinion Samsungs way is the more secure, because you don't need to flash the bootmanager ! You can fall bak to official firmware, or reflash again, any time using the original bootmanager + Odin. Flashing bootmager on HTC Desire was the most risky operation (fail = bricked phone). S-OFF isn't needed for Samsung too.
5.) by my opinion:
PDA = ROM (kernel+software)
PHONE = modem
CSC = regional settings (localized menus)
i second this remark
Awesome, thanks clovek1 that cleared up quite a few things.
1)
I seem to have CWM at boot now much like on my Desire, is that a new thing for SGSII?
2)
Ok, so if I want to go to that KF3 that everyone is posting about and hopefully not have the AOS bug anymore (the battery is not at all what I expected, in a bad way with) than I can go to that link you posted and choose one of the XWKF3 fw's, and since I would rather not have anything french or dutch I could use the XEU one, regardless of what pda, phone or csc I have?
That will probably erase the phone memory (apps etc) right as it is an upgrade to Android 2.3.4?
Thanks again for the explanations, very interesting post

No predates to SGS 1

yes XEU choose language after install .

No 2.3.4 is yet to be released by Samsung .
KF3 = 2.3.3
KG1 = 2.3.4 leaked rom probably test version NOT released by Samsung
KG2 = 2.3.3 last release Saudi Arabia i believe a Samsung release .

Sorry for maybe asking the obvious but did you mean "No, it will not erase the phone memory" or just "No, it is not an upgrade" (or No to both)?

1.) you CAN'T boot into CWM on SGS II like on HTC Desire. CWM is not a part of bootmager, but CWM is just an application.
CWM on SGS II is like ROM Manager on HTC Desire.
This means, you can enter the CWM only by
- starting the CWM application(or ROM Manager on HTC Desire)
- choosing reboot into CWM (puts CWM application to CACHE, reboots)
- waiting until the CWM starts from CACHE (temporary stored)
if you however try to manually enter the bootloader mode, you end up with the Samsungs stock bootmanager (and Odin).
This means, the CWM isn't usable on Samsung phones as the last instance for help, in case of destroyed ROM. Because with a destroyed ROM (PDA) you cant push the CWM into CACHE and force the phone to boot with CWM.
You can only use the bootloader, which isn't altered by the CWM in any way (on HTC Desire, HTC Desire the bootloader is replaced by a custom bootloader, which includes CWM).
Therefore CWM on Samsung makes no sense for me (nobody can't use CWM to flash a new ROM, if the current ROM isn't working). The only partially usable feature of CWM is the Nandroid (which works in a quite limited way, as it doesnt restore RADIO or CSC).
2.) i do remember flashing new ROMs (only PDA) on SGS II without having to reinstall applications (mainly Stock ROMs and Lightning ROMs, which seems to be compatible regarding applications).
I do recommend a Nandroid (through CWM) + Titanium backup in any case, before installing a new ROM. you can return to previous state later (but not as easily, as i would expect from Nandroid ...).

Guide to update/root from Bell KG2 (2.3.3) to KI3 (2.3.5)

Hello all,
I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 from Bell Mobility and it gave me KG2 with 2.3.3, and the battery life honestly sucked... but after reading posts on this forum ppl were saying they're getting amazing battery life after KI3.
So I went through the forums, read stuff about how to upgrade, root, etc etc, and tried it. Although I still cannot comment on battery life as it hasn't been long but i'm pretty sure its definitely better than what I had previously, the KG2. Im a heavy user (always texting, phone calls, browsing) and i'd be happy if i barely get a whole day lets see..
But i've complied a guide using steps already written in different threads on the XDA forum. I just made it simple for Bell users who want to upgrade maybe for a better battery life.
Updating and Rooting Samsung Galaxy SII from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5!
From KG2 on 2.3.3 with Bell Mobility
Mostly used: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
1) Put the phone into download mode (Power + Home + Vol. Down)
2) Start Odin - Click on the PDA button and browse to the .tar file. (In my case, GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XXKI3_I9100XXKI3_I9100XEUKD1 - 2.3.5)
3) Connect the USB cable and wait for the ID:COM section to turn yellow
4) Click 'Start' to flash. Do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device, it will reboot when it finishes.
5) You are now on 2.3.5 I9100XXKI3.
To Root the Device:
1) Put the phone into download mode (Power + Home + Vol. Down)
2) Start Odin and click on the PDA button and select the insecure kernel. (In my case, GT-I9100_XXKI3_insecure)
3) Once you've done this attach the USB cable to the phone and once ID:COM turns yellow click flash. Don't remove cable or press anything, it will reboot when it's done. You will see a yellow triangle when it reboots, fear not it's to be expected. Remove the USB cable when the phone reboots.
4) After the phone reboots go to: Settings > Applications > Development and check USB debugging if it's not already ticked.
5) Run S2 Root application and connect your USB cable to the phone
6) Press 'Root' and wait for it to finish.
7) You could now flash the stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle at the boot screen.
8) Follow the same steps required to root the device, and instead of selecting insecure kernel, choose original kernal (In my case, GT-I9100_XXKI3_original)
9) You've now rooted the phone and put back the stock kernel! Enjoy!
After this, I installed a custom KI3 ROM, specifically the
GT-I9100_WanamLite.Deodexed.Stock.KI3.V3.0.NO-WIPE
using CWM in recovery mode
Lets see how it affects my battery life

Quick question. Does following this procedure wipe the phone? i.e. Did you lose all your installed apps and such?
Great walkthrough! Worked perfectly for me, and all my data was in tact.
Quick question though, I am new to my GS2, had it for a week now so I apologize if this is a dumb question, but can you explain the last step you mentioned here?

Has anybody received it yet in Canada? I checked in Ottawa but nothing at about 2pm.

Acutaly I did want to wipe my phone because of poor battery life. So I thot if I dont wipe it, maybe the glitch in battery life would be there in 2.3.5 too.. So i did wipe the whole device even though it doesnt require it..
Im sure if you dont wipe it, your games/apps should stay the same way
hope i could help

No Idea, Even I havent seen it yet so I thot I'd just update it using the threads already posted on XDA. Honestly my battery life sucked so much on 2.3.3. But now im getting about 25-30 hours of usage with texting whole day, playing games for a while etc
But yea, it would be great if KIES would push the update soon.
So how has it been? Stable? Any issues? Glitches? Good battery life? Reception? GPS? etc?
Thanks.

Oh, and KIES in Canada, we're still waiting for 2.3.4...
I'm also interested in knowing how this 'unofficial' update has been, and if there are any flaws or odd things that have popped up from following the outlined steps.
Also, any idea if Bell will ever update the firmware? (judging from past history with their other smartphones or otherwise)
Have they even updated the S2 firmware ever since they've received it, or is KG2 the only officially supported firmware by Bell?
Thank you
I have a Bell SGS2, white coloured. It was unlocked by code (theunlock.ca) for $35 + tax. I am currently using it with Fido on the $30/6GB plan. The phone came with 2.3.3 and a few bloatware from Bell (Bell Mobility Self serve; Zoompass; Bell TV control). I also read about the battery problem from 2.3.3, and after a quick search, I found this thread.
I followed the first part of OP's instructions (everything before the rooting part). It work great (Thanks OP). I now have the XXKI3 2.3.5. A few things to note:
- all the bloatware are gone;
- all the apps I installed and data I created were intact;
- the 'Software update' option now appears under 'About phone' (however, when I ran it to look for updates, it came back as 'connection failed')
I didn't do the rooting part, as I don't have a reason to at this point. (Also I don't know where to download the insecure firmware)
friends,
guys please do not have any fear in your mind while following this guide. Personally i was running on DDKF3 stock rom from july and still samsung keis sucks and we had no updates for india. Finally i downloaded the GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XXKI3_I9100XXKI3_I9100XEUKD1.exe non wipe file and flashed the phone and now it's in KI3 with all previous apps still running.
All the best.

[Q] Galaxy S2 Stuck At Boot Screen

Hello, sorry if this has already been answered but I did look around at similar scenarios and it seems to me that using odin to flash the stock kernel should fix it but on my device, however, it doesn't fix my problem. I beleive what I did was select update firmware from .zip in clockwork on accident. Idk if this is what you consider a "boot loop" because it doesnt restart it just sits there at the black galaxy s2 screen. Any insight would be great. I hate to have to buy a new one as it is quite alot of money. Like I said, sorry if this is already answered but after looking around for hours I still hve had no luck. Thanks in advance, Alex
Can you get into recovery (volume up+home+power) or download mode (volume down+home+power)?
I can get in to download and recovery mode both
The outlook is promising then. Without knowing what you've flashed, it's impossible to say what damage you've done, but if you don't mind losing your data, you can certainly get back to a working state by following [READ THIS] Got a Boot Loop? Don't post a New Thread!.
Before going down that route though, if you do want to keep your data, let us know what you flashed as it might be recoverable (maybe you just flashed the wrong kernel).
I can't say for sure what i flashed but I can say that i either flashed with an update or updated with a kernel??? sound right??? idk. the data isnt near as important to me as the 680 dollars my carrier will charge me for a new s2. Right now im using a junk alcatel tribe and im going through galaxy withdrawls.
Well before flashing anything else, make sure you definitely have an I9100, not some other variant (I notice you mentioned dollars). If you have a different model, you're in the wrong forums and might make things worse by following advice for the I9100.
I was pretty sure that it is the I9100 but i took the battery out and double checked. it IS the I9100
also for what it's worth when going into recovery(stock version) right after the text reading updating application it gives me an error in red. (E:install_application_for_customer:Can't unmount /preload copy application failed) and after the (Appling [yes it really spells it appling] Multi-CSC) it says Can't access to '/system/csc/TTT/system/'. However, the line after it says that it says Successfully applied multi-CSC
My first attempt to get back to a working phone without losing data would be to flash a stock kernel then, have you tried that?
Ok.. done.. but it still sits at the galaxy screen except now it has the triange due to the custom firmware
If that hasn't got you up and running then it's probably time to bite the bullet and follow the instructions from the boot loop thread linked above (which will also remove the triangle).
Maybe you can answer another question for me. When in recovery mode it says apply update from sdcard... why does it say that when it doesnt actually read from the sdcard? i have checked with the sdcard both in and out and the file directory in the recovery mode doesnt change. is it calling the usb storage an sd card?
ok when flashing a stock rom do i use the phone option in odin or the pda still
If you're flashing a stock rom from [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH1/2/3/4, KI1/2/3/4/8, KJ1/2 Download, then just follow the instructions from there (but usually PDA).
:'( Still wont boot.
What does happen, did any steps fail, any error messages?
Everything went smooth with no errors. No steps failed. Sitting at the boot screen is all it does though
Did you definitely wipe user data? (step 3). The final step of that thread is to try flashing a ROM which wipes, such as (non-stock) VillainROM 1.1.
well... yes i definitely wiped the user data and it was successfull when doing so. I didnt try the villian rom just because I thought that it was an optional thing but i will def. try it now that you bring it up. and hey, i really appreciate the help no matter what the outcome
(VillainROM 1.1 - XWKE7 base) I'm a UHKG7..... is this going to be a problem? just something i noticed and thought I would ask before going ahead

Canadian Bell Galaxy S II user needs some help

Hey everyone. I've had my phone for awhile now, and I love it. I've got it rooted and all that. I've played with a few custom kernals and roms, but I'm getting overwhelmed.
Heres my phones current setup
Model - GT-I9100
Android Version - 2.3.3
Baseband - I9100MUGKG2
Kernal - 2.6.35.7

Here's what I want to do...
COMPLETELY wipe my phone. Back to stock. I've already got my hands on Odin, the stock Modem, Firmware, Kernal, and CSC from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193695
I've been thinking about using the I9100XXKI3 or I9100XXKI4 (from the above mentioned thread) for the Modem and DXKL3 from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) for the firmware...Anyone got any Pro's & Con's? You know, upon further reading I think that the DXKL3 package will overwrite everything to the latest official stuff. Can anyone clear this up for me?
Anyways, after that I want to root it, put on the Speedmod Kernal (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498) again or SiyahKernal (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838), and maybe a custom ROM.
Now you're probably asking yourself "Wheres the question here?" Well, here it is...
I need someone to assist me in doing everything in the correct order so I don't run the risk of bricking anything. Anyone care to help? Please?
EDIT: I should let everyone in on my Android skills. I have it rooted, and I have the speedmod done. However, I followed some random guides on the back alleys of the internet and I'm not totally confident that I did everything correct, hence me wanting to completely wipe it all. I should also add that while I understand the basics, when using Odin I can get confused about what goes in the PDA, Phone, and CSC sections. I know not to have Re-Partition and Flash-Lock checked, and to pretty much leave PIT and BOOTLOADER alone.
Hi
At first i used uodin but its mucha easy toi use cwm juste download a zip file you want to flash and go in recovery and installe it after wipe cache and dalvick cache it you will feel more confiant in cwm than odin trust me!

I bought the phone from Bell. Root(CF-Root). Unlocked. Flash new stock rom(XXKI3/2.3.5) via Odin(Download from Original Android section). Now my GT-I9100M is just GT-I9100. Then AOSP. Now 2.3.7
Steps:
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278
2. Find a firmware. Any will work. Preferably non-Frankenstein but its up to you.
3. Download the firmware and Stock Kernel
4. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1103399
5. Find the CF-Root matching your firmware. (i.e I downloaded the XXKI3 firmware. I then found the KI3 version of CF-Root)
6. Install Kies.
7. Open Odin.
8. Reboot your phone into Download Mode. (Shut down your phone and then use the combo Volume Down+Home+Power until download mode comes up.
9. Connect to PC.
Look at this again for instructions in flashing (1st post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278
10. After flashing the firmware(after reboot and enter download mode again), click on PDA and choose the CF-Root kernel.
11. Flash.
12. Done! You are now rooted on stock rom. And now you have access to ClockWorkMod(CWM) Combo to enter CWM is Volume up+home+power.
And if you want to revert back to stock firmware and kernel(by this i mean the firmware and kernel the phone came with), here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1113928
Oh and after root, you can unlock your phone too! I foolishly paid $60 to unlock my phone but you can do it for free after root!

Backup, full wipe, flash Intratech's DXKL3, flash Speedmod, done.
Sent from my G Speedmod T-I9100 using XDA App
I wiped it. I'm noticing a few weird things...
First, right after the wipe, the language was German. It was an easy fix, but still kind of weird.
Secondly, the intro animation of the S is orange, rather than the blue (which it originally was) Any ideas about this one?
Third and final, at first it wouldn't connect to my Bell network, or my home wireless. I found out that it was in Flight Mode by default. Anyways, a quick power cycle fixed that.
The phone is fine now, aside from the color orange S thing. I'm going to flash Intratech's DXKL3 firmware now.
UPDATE: I flashed DXKL3, which according to the thread, should update the phone to 2.3.6

Problem with Voda Aus ICS 4.0.3 ROOT

Hi, I looked around but can't find a thread similar enough to mine to be helpful.
I have a Galaxy S2 i9100T with Vodafone Australia running 4.0.3 ICS
Earlier, I did a lot of research and absorbed a lot of knowledge, and attempted my first root.
Off to a bad start, as it is not working, and my phone will not boot.
My aim was to root, and root only. Not flash any custom firmware etc.
My kernal version was i9100TDULPB, so I downloaded a modded kernal version, which was CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5
from Chainfire's thread > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
and Flashed it on the phone using Odin, the process went well and Odin gave me a 'success'.
However, the phone started up and showed the typical Samsung Galaxy SII boot page, with the yellow triangle down bottom, but then just turned off. I tried booting again, same thing. Vice verca, I could not get the phone to boot past that page.
I can get into Download mode and CWM recovery, I tried booting from CWM recovery to no luck.
So I downloaded another similar kernal from Chainfire, this time it was called > CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5-PROPER
Which still gave me the same problem. And that is the kernal which is currently on the phone.
And that brings you up to scratch, I'm unsure of what to do now and don't want to risk screwing up my phone any further.
Please explain (Noob friendly ) On what I can do to fix this, I am still interested in having the phone rooted, is there a different kernal you can reccomend I flash? Or a quick fix from CWM recovery? I am new to this, and any advice is helpful.
Thankyou in advance
I think Cf-root is intended only for i9100, not i9100T.
Anyway, try this.
