Hello there!! I wanted to make this poll to see what the fellow users here in the Amaze forums prefer, Sense or AOSP.
On one hand, we have the original, pure, vanilla android interface. Simple, nothing so complicated and still, yet to come the Amaze, "the pure Google experience". There is no rom that is FULLY stock, with the exception of BeastMOD and SenseLess which are almost de-sensed completely.
And on the other, we have the long running Sense, courtesy of HTC. With lots of eye candy, lots of widgets, and an obsession with weather, Sense is very diverse and customizable. One of the latest versions of it, 3.0, is included with the Amaze, and most of the custom roms for it are Sense.
Many people, love sense, others hate it and prefer AOSP over it. So, its simple, choose your preferred interface, and leave a comment of you want xD

You know what I find is funny?
For devices like G1, MyTouch even Vibrant a bunch of people really want Sense.
Now that you have a device that has Sense out of the box nobody seems to want it.
Here's what I have to say about it: If you don't want it, don't buy it. I happen to be a large fan of the Sense UI. I don't care about how "bloated" it feels or anything like that.
I used to make themes for the devices that didn't have Sense to at least give it a "Sense" look and feel. People went out of their way to edit the Sense UI apps just to make them available for devices that don't come with it.
So now that we seem to have the perfect device to run Sense... you all want to get rid of it?
I don't get it. If you don't like Sense then why by a phone with it??? Someone please explain that to me.

Very valid point,
here's my view
I happen to like HTC since i loved my nexus one, and I bought this phone mainly for it's camera, nothing else is like it on T-mobile right now. I neither hate fan nor like it there are parts of it I like and parts I don't. I bought the SGSII first and hated it, I hated the screen resolution and how big it was...this phone just felt good...Sometimes even if you don't like sense, there are no other options, every individual wants something different and not all cellphones deliver everything in one package. I was initially waiting for the galaxy nexus and just got tired of waiting. I hated the pentile screen when I looked at it in the store (even If I ordered over seas) NO dedicated camera button, this is what I really wanted. I also wanted a 720p screen like the rezound, If I could I would get the rezound, but it doesn't have dedicated camera buttons and I want that. it has the same exact camera as the amaze. a 720p screen on a 4.3 inch screen which gives better dpi than the retina display...But I have no choice, I'm not going to pay 180 monthly just to get that phone...right now I pay 60 bucks on a shared plan and get unlimited everything with 5 gigs of unthrotled data. I also like this about android and like things about the iphone, I can't have it all in one package.
I use locker widget, and adw launcher and I'm happy with it...I do not hate the sense launcher, or the lockscreen, I just prefer my own customization. I love what they've done with their camera app. I like their calendar application. I like their parts of their contact and dialer app and hate parts of it.
I talk too much!!!

Peoples always wanted what they don't/can't have. Simple
I myself love to have a Sense Rom mainly due to its lock screen and weather widget and a few more stuff but also running ADW so I can switching back and forth every other week or so
Personally I think Sense based Rom give me more options. If tired of looking at Sense, switch to other launcher and apps or vice versa whereas ASOP based wouldn't let me have Sense stuff if I so desired
Just because a phone comes with Sense doesn't mean it's the main attraction of the device. Did people buy the Samsung Galaxy S2 for TouchWiz? I sure hope not. There are other features of a product that convince people to purchase it. Specs, look and feel, cost-efficiency, and availability all factor in and affect this. The Amaze happens to feel like a really premium product with high end specs to boast. It also happens to come with Sense.
I don't hate Sense, but I just find it to be too non-customizable and would always use a third party launcher like ADW Launcher or Go Launcher anyway, so Sense means little to me.

Then go ahead and have your vote
I sense garbage.
This is my second htc sense phone.
You like sense until you try something else for a while.. Then you can't stand it.
We all have our own opinions.. It's fine, but for me it's a nice eye candy developed system that I can not stand and can't wait for cm7, 9 or something else.
Also a reason why I have adw launcher.
Talking of CM I kinda missed it alot.
Many great features: crt built-in, toggle widgets on top of pull-down notification panel, brightness adjust by sliding the status bar ect ... And separate lock screen wallpaper
Too many customization Sense lack
I switched back to sense for the beats audio

No problem.
I like sense, I like AOSP, just depends on how I feel that day. With all the themes, Roms, tweaks and different launchers, we can pretty much do what we prefer on any given day. I still have a cliq lol running 2.3.4 gingerbread aosp, a HD2 running Sergios core cell rom, and my "NEW" Amaze stock, patiently waiting for new developement.
Sense has great eye-candy and great integrated apps which is my kind of thing. like the built in task manager, built in social media, built in music player. its all better than stock IMO. Stock gets boring to me for some reason
I personally have no problem with sense, it's just the size, I like using my system partition for apps, but I do like the facebook and tight music control integration!

yeah sense is nice and all but IMO the new Froyo ui looks way better.
I'm sure they will come out with an updated version of sense that compliments froyo. Android was ugly (still is even with 2.1 for the most part) and sense made it more accessible for the average consumer. A lot of people hate on it, but it does end up making the end user experience more fun for me. Can't wait to try 2.2, plan on using vanilla for a while, until I see what HTC does with the next iteration of Sense.
No I mean get rid of it completely in my opinion it'snot very aesthetically pleasing and also it causes the phone's performance to go down.

Ask HTC? I dont see them abandoning sense cause google made android prettier.
I really cannot understand people's unbridled hate towards sense ui. everything HTC adds to the phone has been everything I wanted, and google eventually did themselves. facebook and twitter integration, the widgets they provide are awesome, and just in my personal opinion the design is a hell of a lot sleeker then vanilla.
like really, remove all the widgets from your home screen. what's different from stock android? the bart on the top is now black, and they added a phone button and a + button to add things to the desktop... 2.2 just added a phone button, and the + was there because let's face it, there are probably a great majority of android users out there that dont know you can long tap on the screen or hit menu. android really never makes it clear unless you find it on your own or read the manual (2.2 tells you how to do it now though). I'm not one to agree with WalkingTaco on most things, but he's right, sense makes things look better, and is really really more accessible to the general public.
and really? slows down the system? sure on 1.5 I disabled it most of the time, I was like you, I didnt really see the good in sense because of how slow it was at times, I replaced it with slide screen. but man... I went to leaked 2.1 and got over it. it's so fast and smooth, I honestly dont remember how bad it actually was on 1.5. then I replaced my phone and got root 2.1... even better, I love sense.
and really, I don't care about what most of sense does. my favorite parts? the favorites, clock, and friendstream widgets. facebook and twitter integration (before google ever added it!). more screens, and a dedicated phone button on the bottom. that's it. and I love it. now that the phone button is there in 2.2 and more screens have been added since 2.1, all I need are those beautiful widgets and I'll switch to vanilla android, till then, I love sense.
and really, all these people that are ..."boycotting" (in I guess some sense of the word) sense ui, do none of them know you can just disable sense and use stock android on the eris? without even flashing a rom. really. "OH NO! the status bar is still black instead of white! this simply wont do! boycott htc!" flash the white notification bar zip and get over yourselves. there: stock home on an eris.
I personally like sense UI as well. I think it adds a graphically pleasing environment. I love the Email widget they have as well as the clock. I have recently switched to tainted vanilla and I do realize the speed difference. EE 2.0.1 oc'd to 768 was getting 3.2~ MFLOPS but when switched to tainted vanilla I was getting 5.0-5.2~ oc'd to 768 with the Nexus live wallpaper. I would like the HTC clock and email widget in regular android lol.
So no I don't think they should get rid of it at all even with the decrease in speed, it just looks way nicer.
Id like to see an HTC vanilla version for the eris... How long would it take them to make one?
but really who else would use it but 10% of the users.
I don't believe HTC would ditch the Sense UI. It's part of the experience of buying an HTC device. And users have the ability to use the regular Android Home on their devices if they choose.

one good thing to look forward to of sense on 2.2 is a lot of what htc adds in to sense, is now built into android.
htc was the first with facebook integration into the contacts wit sense, and if you noticed, it slowed down the contacts/dialer/messaging a lot. in 2.1 facebook integration was built into android, and it worked flawlessly.
same thing now with flash support. htc's flash plaer was buggy yeah, but atleast we had it. I made a lot of droid/nexus friends jealous with my ability to play vimeo videos.
i think with 2.1 and ESPECIALLY 2.2 once it comes out, performance of sense is flawless. but if you dont like sense for just an aesthetic sense, yeah nothing's gonna change.
who knows? maybe HTC will give us full flash while 2.2 won't support it for our device? just a thought.
if sense is such a big problem with performance then DISABLE IT or download an app that disables it for you.
if you have no idea how to do either then obviously have no clue how to use the internet (google is your friend) or search the forums and therefore a smartphone may not be for you.
The Android OS and APPs available have no end to what you can do with the OS and Sense. Hell you can ROOT the d^mn device to do even more options to do whatever you pretty much want to do with it.
But to complain about how Sense does this or does that and we should do this and do that and tell google & htc this, that and WHO CARES!!!
we have devs hard @ work......working for free in most cases i mind you to help make our phones better. if you want something added/removed or anything for future use then toss some coin their way and i sure they'd be glad to put it first priority.
Hi there
I've noticed in a few of the other forums (while looking for a desire owning friend) that there are a few desire froyo sense roms popping up
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724123
I was just wandering if this meant that at some point we would see similar developments on the ol' hero?
Cheers
boch501
yeahhh it would be nice to have
Porting from desire would be horrible, due to very different hardware, different screen size and different screen ratio.
Very doubtful that a desire port will ever happen. There's really no point as the legend (which is far easier to port from) will get an update to 2.2, and thats a much better bet.
Patience! the devs at the moment are just trying to get a perfect AOSP 2.2 rom first!
yeah it's look like a very good rom, if it's possible to port it on a htc hero, i take it
In Q&A Not development please...
Probably have to wait for the slide to get 2.2 w/sense before it gets ported over

I "gave up" sense full time not that long ago really, and now I don't think I will ever want to go back. As soon as you think it through and make a list of what you actually like about sense, you can soon realise that better things can happen without it.
widgets are easily replaceable or forgotten, UI in some launchers are much much better than sense, better settings and better roms

I did give up Sense for a bit but I missed the widgets the bottom bar sucks compared to LauncherPro, its the widgets that bring me bac.
im using vanilla or froyo depending on mood and what day!
I have used froyo w/sense on my mates desire and i cant wait for it to be on the hero (probably have a better phone by then but nevermind) all the things that put me of sense 2.1 arent there in sense 2.2.... No lag going from screen to screen! stupidly fast (he gets 38-42 on linpack) and hd recording (only on snapdragon i know) if you know someone with a desire cionvince them to root it and put 2.2 on im sure you vanilla fans will love it!!
Some genius has got to port the new sense ui over to the fascinate PLEASE!!!!
OMG ... someone actually likes Sense ?
Why not buy HTC?
I would love HTC Sense on my fascniate too. I came from an incredible and I miss it but the screen on the fascinate is just to hard to give up. Once i installed launcherpro i realized I could make this phone do what I want.
I had sense 2.5 on my Omnia i920 adn wouldn't mind seeing the sense interface on this beast...... You think anyone would be up for the challenge?

Once we are able to compile a bootable kernel for our Fascinate and the 2.2 sourcecode becomes available, I will begin the porting of Sense with help of another dev who is doing the same thing for the Droid. But I will warn you, it will take awhile for it to happen due to the nature of Sense being so tightly integrated into the framework where the source code is not available.

Yeah, but I want to instead of just making a stripper ROM like everyone else and plus it will be fun. The biggest task is the Radio or RIL code because once that is done, everything will come naturally with patches. The good thing thou is we will be getting a lil help from the RIL master Vilord who originally made one for a WinMo port of Sense Android for the old HTC XV6900.

yeah im a huge fan of sense ui. I personally think stock android is bland looking. I love the speed of launcherpro.....but those fake sense ui widgets kill me.
the new sense ui is amazing people!!
I too love sense. I have the incredible now, my first sense phone, and I think it is the best phone I have ever had (Captivate, Droid X, Droid, Droid2, and allot more). I am considering returning it for the fascinate though, the screen is just too hard to type on with the incredible. The 4" fascinate screen should be just about perfect though. I am still leary after the horrible experience with the captivate on AT&T though. The fascinate has the best looking hardware out though. Would love to have the option to put sense on it.

fake? they work just as well, supported, and constantly updated by the developer.
The only thing I would take from the *new* sense is that 3 second boot up time. The rest of sense is UGH.
I can say that Sense is GREAT for people who just want a simple phone, its straight forward. Whenever a casual phone user asks for a recommendation, I recommend them an HTC phone or the iPhone.
I think the best bet is to use launcher pro plus and beautiful widgets. I imagine it won't be too long before someone makes a skin similar to the new sense look.

Samsung Fascinate + LauncherPro Plus + Beautiful Widgets = Epic Android awesomeness, no need for Sense UI. Note that I used to be a huge fan of Sense UI. It's just not worth it due to the ridiculous amount of system resources it takes. After loading a non-Sense (no pun intended) Froyo ROM on my Eris, and got a HUGE boost in battery life, I realized just how badly Sense UI was draining the system, and that's likely why the Incredible has such bad battery life too. And even before switching to Froyo, while still running stock Eclair with Sense, I switched to LauncherPro, and immediately got a boost in performance. You won't notice the lag on the Incredible, due to the fast processor, but I'm guessing it's still a CPU hog underneath, which drains the battery fast.

its far from retarded looking the carousel runs smoother the widgets are much better and it runs great ...
Few attempts are made because Sense 3.5 is hideous looking.
Two out of place buttons on your homescreen with a bar of widgets on the left? Absolutely atrocious. It doesn't even deserve the .5 increment in build strings, as it is no way any sort of improvement over Sense 3.0. The underlining framework may indeed deserve the increase, but the appearance sure as hell doesn't. It should have been called Sense 3.0 lite for women.
If you don't like it don't use it

interesting viewpoint
sense 3.5 is awesome looking man ... the two buttons is smart its way better than 3.0s bar across the bottom eating up useless space for no good reason other than to look like your typical trash smartphone ... its more unique and as for the 4 bars on the left side ... thats a widget remove it easy enough on that one ... like he said if you dont like it dont use it ... but overall it is much smoother running ... and there are no good roms for the evo 3d ... they all apear as stock or stripped down to nothing neat at all ... Joelz rom for the bliss 3.5 port will be the **** because for once that developer is at least trying something unique instead of focusing on what every other developer is doing ... basically themed 2.3.4 roms
freeza
in no way am i pointing fingers at the frevo rom but in my personal opinion i dont like it its stripped to nothingness ... it just makes it look like a samsung bas model phone ... now some people in fact alot of people love that so in no way am i judging because you have made alot of people happy with your hard work ... serious props for that ... but some people like change and some people like sense ... you seem to prefer removing all the spiffy **** in return for performance and thats understandable .. but it does show your taste in roms differs greatly and your opinion because a bit null and void in this topic because sense flat out isnt your cup of tea at all ... i do have friends who absolutly love your rom so i commend you for all the users you have made very happy you are by far a great dev, but like i said not your cup of tea here

The 4g has always had tons of dev support. And it's far from obsolete, I may have traded up to a 3D, but the 4G is still a very capable phone.
I played with a sense 3.5 rom on my friend's thunderbolt, it's smoother and snapper than sense 3.0 on my 3D. Tough to say if it's worth the effort, but it would be nice to have the option. The reasons for not developing this do make sense tho.
I think its because developers are already in too deep with their current roms, which some are still far from done. & like most of the other comments posted, its not appealing. Its not that bad looking, but none the less not the best.
If there's someone that's not on one of the already popular sense roms, they are on AOSP. There's just no focus towards 3.5 right now because other things are in demand.
The OG Evo has it because they can focus on things that hasn't been done. I mean that phone is pushing on its second year in the game, what else do you expect?

true and the og evo is still by far a bad ass phone ... main complaint being no one cares much about the evo 3d ... i mean really i have a developer model with stock 2.3.4 that hasnt been pushed by sprint yet ... im yet to see a rom that is better than my stock 2.3.4 every rom i try is a let down because some great feature just isnt there ... the stock 2.3.4 for the e3d is pretty nice and very stable ... i hope someone out there can correct me and point me to a good rom that isnt themed out to uber gayness i dont want some rom that makes my phone look like satan or an orange peel i mean really ...

I'm not, there was a question in the OP, and I answered it. Did you expect no one to answer the question, and to have a bunch of Sense 3.5 loving people in here talking about it?

sense 3.5 is awesome looking man ... the two buttons is smart its way better than 3.0s bar across the bottom eating up useless space for no good reason other than to look like your typical trash smartphone ... its more unique and as for the 4 bars on the left side ... thats a widget remove it easy enough on that one ... like he said if you dont like it dont use it ... but overall it is much smoother running ... and there are no good roms for the evo 3d ... they all apear as stock or stripped down to nothing neat at all ... Joelz rom for the bliss 3.5 port will be the **** because for once that developer is at least trying something unique instead of focusing on what every other developer is doing ... basically themed 2.3.4 roms

Most of the devs had nothing to work with when the EVO 3D got root. That is why there are 'themed' 2.3.4 ROMs, and we still have nothing to work with that is as good as Sense. AOSP is the ONLY other alternative, which in turn birthed MIUI. Nobody would dare try and port a crappy TouchWhiz UI to the EVO 3D. What else is there?

in no way am i pointing fingers at the frevo rom but in my personal opinion i dont like it its stripped to nothingness ... it just makes it look like a samsung bas model phone ... now some people in fact alot of people love that so in no way am i judging because you have made alot of people happy with your hard work ... serious props for that ... but some people like change and some people like sense ... you seem to prefer removing all the spiffy **** in return for performance and thats understandable .. but it does show your taste in roms differs greatly and your opinion because a bit null and void in this topic because sense flat out isnt your cup of tea at all ... i do have friends who absolutly love your rom so i commend you for all the users you have made very happy you are by far a great dev, but like i said not your cup of tea here

It's okay, I'm not taking offense, and you're right--I do enjoy minimalism, but to a certain extent. You have to understand that in removing the Sense launcher and widgets, that's all that's really done. The Launcher (Rosie), while being a decent launcher for the average person, is VERY VERY limited in terms of customization. I assumed, and that was probably a bad idea considering how popular my/sense removed ROMs are in comparison to full Sense, that more people would feel the same. You can achieve almost identically what Sense has from a Senseless ROM with a bit of time and effort. LauncherPro easily outclasses HTC's Launcher in terms of customization, performance, and looks. You can easily skin just about any launcher to look like Sense if you really wanted to. The only thing HTC has going for its launcher is its widgets, which unfortunately aren't able to be used with other launchers. Other than that, I truly don't see the appeal so many people have with sticking to what HTC thinks you need to stick to with its Launcher. There are countless mods that try and improve upon it, but in the end it's still limited. So, that says to me that I'm the kind of person who enjoys as little constraints in customizing my phone as possible.
htc widgets
thats super lame that the htc widgets cant be used elsewhere because your right they are really nice

It's all good man, we like what we like. I didn't really expect too many to jump on it. I mainly created it for myself, but figured the community could maybe benefit from it.
Boot Manager allows me to try out pretty much any ROM now a days without having to do anything to mine, so I'm good to go when I need to see what other people have accomplished, which still do this day, isn't very much in comparison to mine. Good thing about these Sense ROMs is that anything you want from one can easily be put into another.
boot manager ?
heres a dumb one ... whats boot manager

[DEV][WIP][ROM]Bliss 3.5 Port[Sept.20][2.3.4]
I've been on both types of roms. I just wanted to get an idea on what people prefer and WHY they prefer it.
Give me your opinions and reasons please! Very curious!
Thanks in advance.

I've always liked Sense more. For me it just feels complete, as with the apps/widgets, which give a better appearance; skins, icons, rosie, quick settings, pretty much everything looks better. Then there's the integration with social networks, like facebook and twitter, which is awesome since I use both. Other apps perform better, especially the camera and keyboard. AOSP just feels too bare and ugly for me to ever wanna run on my phone. Besides, if I wanted Sense removed, I wouldn't have even went for an HTC phone in the first place.
I prefer AOSP from a speed and cleanness factor, but missing functionality like Bluetooth calling always puts me back onto Sense ROMs (though my daily is SlimKANG - a nearly "Senseless" Sense ROM).
I like both however I'm on aosp right now because I like to use my wiimote as a controller and also I'm on jb. When I get a nexus 7 I'll probably go back to full sense though.

Sense because of the camera

I prefer Sense because of the camera and bluetooth. I've play around with AOSP and I have heard that it is easy to tweak and theme, but I don't know how to set it up to my liking.

AOKP has the most options in AOSP if you want to mess with it some more. Also you can download themes from the Play Store.
Until Sense 4+ I would've said hands down, AOSP all day. Sense 4+ though is in my experience comparable to AOSP, but in many cases actually offers more smoothness(this pertains only to ICS AOSP though, as JB AOSP smooths EVERYTHING out). I don't think Sense is necessarily prettier than AOSP, but they are pretty in different ways. Sense to me is like the Astin Martin, whereas AOSP is like the 1968 Eleanor. Sense definitely wins the camera category hands down, as well as music playing, but I think anymore the call quality rivals each other(granted I don't actually call that much). When it comes to the little things, like the app drawer or switching between menus and such AOSP tends to be quicker. All in all... it's just up to how I'm feeling that particular day I suppose. /rant
You just can't beat CM9's speed and response in my opinion.
I appreciate all of your inputs. I have tried to like AOSP, but it just doesn't cut it on the rezzy for some reason. I feel so much more complete with a sense rom. I feel like this phone was built fully for sense (I know it was), but the potential is there for AOSP. I always find myself going back to sense. Mainly due to the camera!
I enjoy tinkering with AOSP from time to time, but I just love me some sense. With development booming on the rez like it has been lately, I've been pretty happy and content with sense and especially sense 4, a lot of that is do to the custom kernels that I've been lucky enough to run on my phone in beast mode.

I agree. I'm ways shocked to hear people say bad things about sense...but the resound is my first HTC phone and ive had custom roms nearly the entire time I've owned it.
I absolutely love the sense keyboard. I have the hardest time going back to aosp keyboard now. Camera is nice. Email is nice too. And I just like the feel of sense, the theming
Rezound, s-off, loving it.
Sense for me is too much.... everything is too big and it reminds me of bubbles when I look at it. I like the slim lines and small icons in aosp but the biggest thing that keeps me from sense is the settings app..... UGLY

I agree. Sense seems like my phone thinks I am 5 years old so everything has to be colorful and pretty.

I completely agree with this. I don't use social networks at all, so this functionality is lost on me. Sense is great for somebody that wants their phone to just work (especially if that person is a social network junkie like my wife). I like to tinker, so that's the reason that I like AOSP. It's a lot easier to tinker with AOSP than it is Sense. Sense = gaudy and indulgent. AOSP = streamlined and elegant.

I am a big tinkerer so I can see what you mean by appreciating the ease of aosp. However, I don't mind a little challenge and since s-off, I haven't had any issues with rezound mods.
I'm don't use social networking at all but there are definitely some things I prefer about sense.
Anyone who claims there is absolutely nothing.better about sense or aosp is lying to themself. Reminds me of an apple fanboy who thinks their iPhone does everything better than any android.
Rezound, s-off, loving it.
I just got back on sense and for some reason it feels like its missing something I can't quite figure out.

Maybe, it really isnt as customizable as AOSP and what is customizable you dont want to change because then it will compromise the whole sense feel.
