Any way to retain Music downloaded after new flash? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to retain music I've downloaded from my Google Music account on the phone if I was to wipe and flash a new rom?
Running Galaxy Nexus GSM

Do you see the Internal Memory as a 'mass storage device' on cumputer ?
If yes, you may try 'Recuva'.

[Q] sorry need help with stock app not seeing music on the sd ext

Hello, all atrix owners have a small problem here first off im rooted unlocked boot loader running 2.3.4 latest stock build 4.5.91 . now for the issue my atrix can see my ext sd but not the stock music app or any third party apps that ive found for music or videos please is there a solution for this .My card is not bad i have ruled this out and yes I have googled till my head hurt so if this has been addressed im sorry i guess im just a slacker lol.
Did you tried from another music app like PlayerPro?
you can also try to change the default storage location in:
Settings --> Storage --> Storage Location
yea i just bought player pro and no luck just dont see the sd ext says it sees the sd card but its actually the internal storage .
I'm sure you've sorted this now but just use any file manager and open just one of the songs on your external sd card and you should see your music in all players, stock and third party.

emptying my sd card

hi there, ive just noticed that my s2 is getting full (internal)but when i check whats on it im baffled by most of the stuff on apart from ROMS and updates, the question is how do i know what to get rid of to free up space, for e.g. what is rosie scrolland plenty of other stuff like that, thanks in advance
The best and clearest way is:
1) Titanium Backup for third part apps
2) save important Data (documents, music, pics) to PC
3) format the sd card!
4) Flash again
a) firmware via Odin (finished if no rom needed)
b) flash a kernel (because root and CWM)
c) Choose rom and copy to sd
d) flash rom
5) restore Titanium Backup data and files from PC

[Q] Songs are not recognized by any player.

Pretty much what the title says.
It was working fine before, don't know what bugged it.
On Rootbox v1.2 with siyah kernel.
P.S Edited the post.
Did UMS work before you flashed? Were you using this ROM (or an older version) before, or were you using something else?
Did you try using another ROM?
I think this happened to me before, if I remember correctly , what I did was changing my usb instead of mass storage to MTP (media device)
Hope this helped you.
Thanks for your input.
It didn't help me, but I figured out a way.
What I did was dl a wifi transfer app from the play store, and transfer the new v2.4 rom with that. Hope that fixed the problems. Installing it right now.
Maybe usb debugging was on.

So , new problem...
After managing the mass storage, I got a new problem , which is, my songs are not recognized by any player. I open a media player and it just says that no music items.

What player are you using? You can try a different player from the Play Store which lets you specify where your music files are located.
If you store your files in the internal storage, then I suggest you refresh the mediastore. If you store them on your external SD card, then reinsert it. Or format your SD card to cure it of errors.
Also make sure that there is no '.nomedia' file present within your music folder.

External SDCard problem

Copied a couple of GB of photos to my External SDCard.Rebooted phone, nothing showed up,but all videos and music that were on the card were still showing in Video Player,Gallery and Music Player. So I unmounted the card via settings ,remounted .now nothing shows up at all.
If I browse through Root Explorer I can see all my media, and when I look in Settings/Storage the card shows up.
I thought perhaps it was the card(only bought last week) could be the problem, so I stuck my old MicroSD card in which has some media on it, same thing.Any ideas?
Should have said. When I take a photo it is stored on the micro SD card. That works OK
Is it just teh gallery that causes an issue?
If so try what this guy suggests here to do a rescan of the media:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27787690&postcount=3
No, nothing shows up.No videos, no music and no photos
I decided to reset the phone (from Settings) .Set it up again and all seems well again
Today I added some more albums to my external SDCard.Again, after doing so,none of the new mp3s showed up.Removed SDCard, and like before, NOTHING on the SDCard shows up.So I thought I would do what I did last time and wipe the phone. This time though it didn't do the trick, and nothing is showing up.Even reinstalled the original stock ROM,still nothing.
Have tried with a couple of different cards with the same outcome, nothing on SDCard appearing on phone(I can see the card in My Files and browse all the individual files OK).
Assuming there is something wrong with the phone , I guess all I can do is return to store, however I did unlock the phone using Voodoo Unlocker. Can this be reversed?
Can anybody help??
Either with the SDCard problem or know whether the Voodoo Unlock is reversible??
TIA
This problem has resurfaced.Installed Omega 8.1 Rom .Opened Music Player., nothing there.Same for Gallery and Video Player.
The thing is I downloaded PowerAmp,added the folder that has my music in and it works fine. Open QuickPic and all my pictures are shown, as are my videos which I can play in Video Player.
I can transfer a song to my internal memory, it shows up. Transfer it back to extSDCard, it disappears.
After flashing a stock ROM the problem is still happening.
The strange thing is ,the phone recognises there is an external card. When I open the camera app, I get the pop up asking me if I want to store my photos on the sdcard.I do, and it works fineand any picture I take on the phone shows in Gallery). It just seems to be a problem with any media. Its doing my head in.
Please save me from having to go buy an iPhone4s, because as boring as it may be, it does,as they say "just work"
This sounds software-related to me. Have you tried flashing a stock ROM and testing without installing any applications to the device? It's possible that one of the apps you have installed is causing some sort of problem.
It is still possible that the external SD card has a fault though. Have you tried a different one? Additionally, why are you using the external card rather than the internal memory?
All roms for me never find video or mp3 on external sd card .
Notable that Kies places Video in DCIM/Camera folder if you ask it to transfer filers to ext sd card and likewise music on ext card is media folder .

yes, tried 3 sdcards.
Have 10GB of music. 2GB of photos. So I need to use the external SDCard ,as I would already be out of room.
This has worked fine. The last week or so there has been no problem.I have been flashing ROMS, adding media to SDCard with no issue.
How about apps? Have you tried doing this with no other applications installed?
I havent, but I am going to do a full wipe flash again without installing any apps.

If you do that and it works ok, just install one app at a time until you find the culprit. Then uninstall it and email the developer!

Well that cant be right can it. There surely would be little point in having an external SDCard in that case. You cant put apps on it, you cant put music or video on it? (well not if you want to use stock apps)
Well, that didnt work.Fresh install of ROM, no apps installed. No music/Photos.
So thats stock ROM, Omega 7.1 (last known working with that ROM) and Omega 8.1 flashed probably half a dozen times over the last 24+ hours.
The only music and vid that appear are the Samsung installed demo ones.

Weird. I have music and media stored on my external SD card, and everything reads and functions fine (on Wanamlite using Ninphetamin3).
Have you tried changing kernels?

No I havent. If it is something I should try I will have to have a read up. I have only rooted and flashed ROMs, never changed Kernels.
Edit:
I have used drag & drop when phone is connected to PC, I have used a card reader.Card has been formatted in the phone, in the card reader.
I have used Easy Phone Sync ,just tried Kies and that syncs fine to the external card.
It surely must be a software problem.

Definitely try flashing a new kernel - have a look through the dev sections.
It's worth reformatting the sdcard in the phone as well, using the phone software to do it - that should eliminate any weird permissions-related problems.

Play Music 5.3 doesn't recognize external storage (SD card)

Hello,
I was very excited about the last update of Google Play Music which finally allows using external storage (SD card) for saving offline copies of music files. However, after upgrading to the new version (5.3), I found out that this option is not available on my phone. I tried couple of usual steps (clear data, uninstall the app, clean all the folders while uninstalled) but the options is still not there. I didn't try a wipe or a different ROM yet.
I found mentions related to the fact, that the external storage option in Play Music is unavailable on phones, which don't have any external storage. I'm wondering if this can be the reason - the app is not able to find the external storage. Note that all other apps (including system ones like Camera) have no trouble locating and saving to my 16GB SD card.
I would like to know if there is someone more knowledgable who can guess how the app detects external storage - maybe a symlink or something can fix the issue? Anyway, I would be grateful for any ideas as to the nature of this.
Device: Samsung Galaxy S Advance (GT-I9070)
Android version: 4.2.2 (TouchWiz based ROM) by Woft, rooted
Thanks in advance for any replies.
