Hi, guys!
Firstly, sorry if this is not Android-related nor software related.
A few hours ago, this morning, I cleaned my touchscreen with a wet tissue (I know. I am that stupid) and some of the moisture might have seeped into the small gap on the home physical button.
After that, I noticed that a large portion of my touchscreen doesn't accept response; the bottom quarter. I find this weird, because the capacitive and physical buttons work flawlessly, despite being directly affected.
In a somewhat failed attempt to fix things, I turned the phone off, pulled the battery out and put it outside (but not under direct sunlight) to try to dry the inside.
Six hours later, I turned it on, the touchscreen seems to work now. However, there is still an small area in which the screen won't recieve input (I'd say probably 7% the size of the screen).
What do you guys think I should do? Take it to the service center? Or try to open the device manually and try to dry it again? I have some background in computing hardware, so I'm pretty confident in what I'm doing. And taking it to the service center would be my last option, because I'm travelling next Sunday and I'm scared that it won't be done in under a week.
Thanks before.
Open the device manually and keep it to dry. Do not open the screws yourself (It will void your warranty) Just remove the back cover, battery, and leave it to dry

Yeah, that's what I did, friend.
I don't mind about voiding the warranty; I've flashed so many times, I just don't give a damn.
Ok, if you don't mind voiding your warranty then its ok
I usually dont prefer giving my phone to service center because they usually charge very high prices for problems which are very easy to fix and they keep the phone with them for such a long time -.-
Leave your phone to dry for atleast one day and go to service centre only if you dont get rid of the problem
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
Try fixing it yourself, given your circumstances,i suggest you do that
Okay, it seems okay now, even though the bottom right of the touchscreen is still quite slow in responsiveness, but responding nevertheless.
I'll let my baby rest for the night, and check on it tomorrow morning. Hopefully it'll be fine.
I'm keeping this thread open for now just to see what people have to say about voiding warranties vs. not.

I propose in a serious manner: microwave.
well if you can visit a service center you should and ask them if they can fix that before you leave... leave the phone with them..
i think its a little moisture issue maybe they can simply open and clean things..
if then can't then you can open it up by your own and let it dry
hope that fix the remaining effected area of the touch screen

I may have done my phone in this time... it fell into a tub of water for no more than three seconds while on. I think this may do what all my tinkering/Odin-ing/Heimdall-ing never managed to do. I grabbed it an took the battery out and I am currently in the process of taking it apart using the little blue tool that I got along with the new ffc camera that I have yet to install.
Has anyone dropped this phone in water while on and it not be negatively affected?

have saved many a phone from davy jones' locker with this method.
My friend's Vibrant fell on a bucket of water and it still worked.
And my Vibrant has washed it's face with me in the mornings and eaten ice cream (I think it wanted to try the next update, but the wrong way)
I think it will survive.
Just don't turn it on or anything until you are completely sure it's try.

The phone is currently completely taken apart and in a bed of brown rice inside a tightly sealed tupperware container. I shall post results of the procedure later... although I don't know how much longer I should wait. I'll give it at least a day, but I'm open to suggestions. I guess I should say that when I opened the phone I didn't notice that water had made it anywhere onto the motherboard, but it's possible that I missed it.
Mine took a dive into the toilet and didnt have any issues. The seal is pretty tight and the air inside the case doesnt escape through the USB/Headphone jack easily. If there was no water in the battery compartment you are probably safe but 24 hours in rice was still done just in case. Been about a month now.

That sucks though.
Mine too decided it was a good day for a dip in the pool on Monday... I simply took the battery, SIM and SD cards out, wrapped it in 8 socks and threw it in the dryer with a load of dry laundry for 15min...
It wouldn't turn on with the power button... so I plugged it into my computer and the charge indicator came one. From then on, everything worked great!
Mine was in my pocket and i got pushed in the pool.. I pulled the battery and waited like 3 days turned it back on and it works but i got lines from top to bottom and it fades in and out.. It works as my test phone..

The rice trick should have done it, I recommend it often, but I fear you may now have damaged the phone by not leaving it long enough and subsequently putting it on charge.
Also note, most phones have water damage litmus indicators in now so your warranty is screwed too.

Depends really, you can insure a phone at most stores these days and they will replace it regardless if you do. If your household insurance is all risk, this will cover your phone as well. (note both options costs extra money a month)
But if he does not have any of that he is indeed screwed.
Also, when dropping a phone in the water remove the battery and let it dry for at least 1 week. prefered 2 weeks. Do it in dry rice or with those moist absorbing packs you find in shoes and **** these days.
It's very possible only your battery is dead, considering the phone switched on fine and it's only the charging that doesn't work. Buy a cheap battery off ebay and try it out.
I think you might be right, If the phone would have been a goner it wouldn't have started at first. But i just cant find the water damage indicators on battery or phone, just to check if i can get it repaired through warranty

I'm just speculating about the indicators on the sgs ii, it's common practice for other manufacturers to use them, often in plain sight. The gs ii, may not have any but if it does they're probably inaccessible inside.
Best bet is to examine some tear down photography. Maybe ifixit has one?

Uncooked rice is inefficient. Not sure why people use that when they can use either silica gel or desiccant, both of which come when you buy certain dry foodstuff or PC cases/computer parts/cameras (or you can buy it from the camera store). Is it worth saving a few dollars and risk the water being in your phone for that much longer?

Hello everybody...
I'm almost in the same situation as chelseafan...
GS2 dropped in the water, switched off, tried to dry it with my hairdryer, then successfully switched on. Everything seemed to work just fine, but then it suddenly died and I couldn't turn it on again.
I probably didn't wait enough to let it dry (a couple of hours) and now it's in a box with rice and silica.
I couldn't find any water detector sticker or similar, is there any feedback for this kind of sensors on the GS2? I was just trying to understand if I can get it repaired in warranty or not...
Thanks to everybody!

Thanks jje, I'll try to let it dry some days more and then we'll see... Maybe I'm lucky!
Speaking from experience, rice works, but overnight is not enough, should have left it longer, next mistake is powering it on and charging it, water and electricity do not mix, that may be the stick that broke the camels back, but I hope not in your case.....

As I see it in the pictures there are two Water Indicator stickers in the phone.
1. In de corner of the battery compartment, down to the right
2. In de back housing, not the battery cover, between the small camera window and the speaker opening.
You can see them in the pictures 1 and 2 of Step 4.
Apparently Samsung uses white stickers with blue/purple crosses on it. They are about 3 by 3mm.
I've been lucky! After 3 days turned off and closed in a box with plenty of rice and silica, my GS2 is back and working perfectly! No issue detected so far!
So, a little list of suggestions after my bad experience:
1- GS2 is NOT waterproof
2- the fastest you take it out from water the best chances to have it working again you have
3- take out the battery as fast as you can and don't turn it on
4- silica and rice worked just fine for me, but be patient, you will need at least 3-4 days
5- be perseverant: after one day of treatement I couldn't switch on my GS2, but atter 3 days everything was ok!
Hope this will help others!

Hi, I have a Samsung Ace here which has been dropped down the toilet. After letting it dry for a while . I proceeded to check if it worked. It sprung into life.. or so i thought.
Basically the screen lit up (the lights came on) and the phone made it's start up noise etc.. It connected to the pc fine via Kies.
So i presumed the screen was broke so i bought a new one and fitted today and still have the same symptoms. I can still connect to kies and this time it asked if i wished to update the firmware. Which i did.. but still no display.
I have cleaned the board with meth' spirit. & still I get the same problems.
Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be.?
thank-you Dom
Maybe there's some **** stuck on the phone
There's might be some short circuit on the board. Or within some components.
I used to date ALICE EVE but now, I'm going steady with MEGAN FOX
Could be the GPU problem...
Since, the screen gets lights but no image and Kies recognises the phone....
Turn off the phone
Remove the batt + sim
Use a hairdryer to blow at everything (including sd slot area, sim card area and screen)
Let it cool in an air-conditioned environment
It should be usable by 16 hours
This was sent from a Galaxy Ace. Problem?
sortcircuit, its still wet when you turn it on.
take it to samsung service center
Hey thanks for the replys. I am thinking its a problem with the GPU.
@zaqwankira luckily it was just a number one in the toilet.. not the kind you suggest. LOL
You should take your phone to the Samsung service centre.
There is two reasons i dont want to do that..
All the water sensor things have been activated in the unit, so they will be able to tell there has been water damage.
and the other reason is the samsung service centre around this way are useless.
Mmmh.. Maybe if you cleaned you ace after that is dropped down with some clean water and a phon, it will be worked good also now

Short Version:
So here I am with a i9100 drowned in wash tub for almost 5 mins. Now trying to dry it up. Don't know what will happen. Will keep you guys posted.
Long Version:
Just came out shower and kept my phone in pants. Went for packing bag as I had to travel today. Wore my jeans and kept that pant away with the phone in it. Left to another room for packing. After coming back the pant had vanished. Enquired about the pant to my mom and she told the she soaked the pant in wash tub. It was like 5 mins. Rushed to the wash tub and removed the phone, removed battery and shook off and removed a lot of water. Now the phone is lying in pieces and kept under 60W bulb. Lets see will dry this thing up for 16 hrs and then insert the battery.
Guys your tips and comments will be really helpful for resurrecting the i9100.
Leave for a week in a container of rice.If that doesnt cure it,claim off of house insurance.......or sue your mother.
Rice is best for drying the phone completely. It just soaks up all the moisture.

UPDATE 1:
The battery is having a soap like corrosion on the extreme right pin. I think the battery is short circuited. Maybe i will have to check a new battery at a local retailer to just test whether the phone is alive or dead. BTW 20 hours of phone warming (under a 60W bulb) completed. Phone is pretty warm and I dont think insides must be wet now. Also the phone seems to be much shinier than before

UPDATE FINAL:
So put in my battery today and the phone refused to show any sign of life. Ultimately took my phone to service centre. They opened up the phone and inspected it. The inspection revealed that:
1. The mainboard is dead
2. The digitizer connector adapter is damaged. Still further if the phone boots up further damage could be assessed.
The cost for the repairs were claimed as INR 15000 ($285) which is way too costly. Maybe I will have to give my phone. Hmmm I am thinking to buy a Galaxy Nexus now. I cant afford an S2 again now nor a repaired S2. It feels really sad to loose my beloved phone.

Was missing my phone today so thought should start up my phone. And miracle happened. The phone booted up after attaching the charger. Awesome stuff. Samsung rocks in terms of hardware. Now only two things are not working blue tooth and the phone is not getting via charger. And some stains are found on inner glass of back camera lens. Rest each and everything rocks! I am really happy with build quality.

Hello folks,
yesterday I got a S3 International that was dropped into the North Sea here in Germany. It was just for a few seconds submerged.
My buddy opened it and removed the battery. I told him to put it into a box with rice to dry it out.
He then went to the store and bought a new one. I took the dead phone plugged in the battery and viola it booted.
He said I can have it. Then after 3 hours the screen was dead while the device was still working. ( I got a phone call )
I decided to put it back into the box with rice over night. The Phone booted with working display this morning.
What can I do to clean all the electrical components and make sure that all moisture is gone?
Any help or tips are very much appreciated.
Thank you.
PS: I'll be off line for a couple of working hours.

My biggest concern is going to be the exposure of the electrical components to salt water... That stuff is going to become corroded rather quickly (Even with rice drying process) (Spent 13 years working on Naval Aircraft at sea... so seen the exposure many of times, its a constant battle) As for cleaning them.. mainly something to displace the water.. not sure what kinda corrosion prevention for electrical parts is available on the commercial market. we used a water displacing electrical safe spray alot. So see what is similar you might be able to find.

Try open the plastic that protects the motherboard, then use a hair dryer fom a distance and for few seconds, so the board will not heat.
It helps

Well it looks like the screen is okay, but the device shows some strange behaviour. Sometimes after turning it on it goes into download mode without holding the specific button combination.

You can replace it yeah. Can be expensive. Perhaps get an assessment at a mobile phone repair centre.

I doubt it is worth repairing, replacing the mobo now and next the aerial module, then the camera etc. etc.
Salt water corrodes over time, so the problems will only get worse. Spend £300 now on a new one rather than £350 repairing that one in stages.
