I see users posting that they have a rooted photon with exceptional battery life.. I also have a rooted photon but I have a horrible battery life.. I understand that there are kernels and roms available but I don't understand the jargon of the forums.. I really just want 15 or more hours of battery from a single charge.. I have downloaded setcpu but I have been reading that the app only works with a custom kernel.. so I need clarification on that.. I am also using battery calibration but I haven't seen any increase.. so if anyone could please provide any helpful hints or tips to extend my battery I will greatly appreciate it.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Best helpful hint for any dual core device would be to invest 10 bucks in an extra OEM/extended battery or simply stop using it as much. Peoples battery life differs from usage. If you're a heavy user like myself who never puts down his phone then you really can't expect great battery life. The radio (3G/4G) probably kills the battery the most. When on wifi try turning off mobile data. If you're on a moto stock rooted rom go to settings, battery & data, and set the profile to maximum saver. Also, you could turn off auto background sync and manually get updates when you open apps that need internet. My last suggestion would be to use juice defender, set it to aggressive so that soon as your screen shuts off it turns off mobile data, wifi and GPS. That feature alone could give you an extra 30% more battery. Again, its all about usage. I have two batteries so i stopped worrying
Stripping to Conserve...
Yes, like you mentioned that many folks root and strip for better battery life, that is exactly what I like to do myself. I like to run stock, but strip it down to only the essential system software that I need for it to be functional for my uses. I try to be careful not to remove things that cause conflict which would negate the benefit of removal. After removing everything, I run apps like Badass Battery Monitor to check for excessive battery consumption by "orphaned" processes that might be going crazy because another app's removal impacted it negatively...I also do little things like using Google Voice (not the Voice app, just Google Voice online) to handle my voicemail instead of Sprint Visual Voicemail, so that Sprint VVM is not running in the background.) When I fired up the Photon for the first time, it was running 24 processes (granted, these are only the running processes that the Manage Applications section shows; there are more running that are not shown, of course)...after stripping the apps out that I don't need, I am now running 5 processes as visible in Manage Applications: Settings, Toggle Widgets, Google Services, Maps, and Keyboard. Anyways, here is a comprehensive list of the apps that I have removed IMMEDIATELY after taking the 198_6 OTA update and then rooting: (Make sure you back up your original stock ROM prior to stripping, and I would suggest making a separate copy of your complete system/app folder to keep on your SD card for "on the fly" system app re-installs...)
IMPORTANT REMINDER: As you remove each app with Titanium Backup, remember to WIPE DATA for EVERY app prior to removing that app...and then when you are all done stripping everything out, reboot to your recovery and clear your Cache and your Dalvik Cache!

Anyways, like I mentioned above, be sure to make a CWM backup of your stock ROM before stripping, and I would suggest also making a copy of your stock System/App folder prior to stripping and put it on your SD card so that you can re-add system apps if you want to use them later. (Like adding your SIM card management apps back when you travel overseas, etc...)
Good luck, and enjoy!

Yeah its all good lol. Although my solution is probably alot easier I applaud that gentleman for taking the time to type all that out. Juice defender doesn't work miracles for us heavy users but it does help. When I'm in the car I totally disable mobile data to save battery. I also turn it off so i won't get the urge to tweet or do crazy **** while I'm driving. Saves so much...

I use SystemPanel to identify apps that are running, and Titanium to freeze apps that I don't want to run. Here is a list of apps that I have safely froze, and a list of apps that I am considering freezing but too scared because I don't know for sure what they do.
Apps that are safe to freeze:
AllShare -- never ran it, so I don't know what I am missing
Buddies Now -- never ran it, so I don't know what I am missing
com.sec.android.samsungapps.una --not sure what it was, but I don't seem to miss it
Daily Briefing --downloads news and stuff to show in its widget.
DRM Protected Content Storage --needed for the Avatar movie.
DRMContentLauncher --needed for the Avatar movie
Fancy Widget --comes with macnut
QuickOffice --lets you view MS Office documents. Not sure why it would need to run all the time though
SNS --social networking sync. I think it's needed for the social hub
SNS Account -- same as SNS above
Social Hub --an app that shows FB and twitter posts
Visual Voicemail --Never used it or needed it. Who uses voicemail anymore??
Voice Dialer --I don't use voice dialing
Wi-Fi Calling --Freezing this one is strange because it still shows as running even after being frozen. Maybe it should be deleted???
wssyncmlnps --another syncing app for one of the apps that I have froze above, I believe
Apps that I am considering freezing, but too scared since I don't know what they do:
BadgeProvider
com.sec.android.providers.downloads
Mobile tracker settings
My Uploads
Task Manager
Wi-Fi Calling --well, I know what this does, but freezing it won't stop it, so it might need to be deleted.
MTP Application
Gallery --why does this continue to run in the BG all the time?
HTC_IME mod
LogsProvider
Processes running under System Processes that I am considering freezing, but too scared since I don't know what they do
mmcqd 0.2
sensorserver_ya 0.1
mediaserver 0.1
rild 0.0
evetns/0 0.0
pvr_workqueue 0.0
zygote 0.0
Anyone want to add to the list, or explain what some of the apps that I am considering freezing actually do?
By the way, I am using the Macnut R13 ROM.
hey nice list...
one question off topic
i can't seem to find Social Hub in my r13 rom..... do you? i know Samsung IM & Email are probably part of samsung social hub.. but i cant seem to find the social hub app itself... weird..
All ROM Devs have removed wifi-calling because you can never shut it down and it eats through your battery.

I'm running Obsidian V5 and I uninstalled wifi calling all together.. I dont plan on using it. Here's others I froze/uninstalled without seeing any issues or anything:
- android live wallpapers 2.2 (dont use any)
- buddies now
- calendar 1.1 (dont use)
- calendar storage 1.1
- calendar sync
- car home 1.2
- car home 2.2
- desk home 1.0
- email 2.2
- feeds & updates (not sure what it is, but hasnt affected anything ive noticed)
- files 1.0
- google voice 0.4.2.8
- live wallpaper picker 2.2
- manage online album 1.0
- samsung apps 1.2.183
- talk 1.3 (dont use it - dont know what it is but always running)
- task manager 1.11
- voice dialer 2.2
- voice search 2.0.1
Wifi calling can be uninstalled through Titanium, but you need to reboot immediately because it will cause constant FCs.
As for the others, I wouldn't touch sns or the providers.downloads. The latter is necessary for market downloads I believe. Also leave the system processes alone unless you want to Odin back.

No, it doesn't need to run in the background (i.e., just freeze or un-freeze with TB and you're set to go).
Does anyone know of a way to prevent the wifi from restarting itself. I am having the data connection issue and turn wifi off but it is back on again a little while later.
Are you using any battery/app management apps? Greenpower?
No battery management app and even after a factory reset I did yesterday for a different issue, it is still happening.
Bump... Any ideas>
can you describe the problem a bit more please ?

I have the same problem with mine. Wifi keeps restarting or sometimes hangs at authenticating. Very frustrating and makes wifi connection completely unreliable. I dont have any battery management app or no task manager either except for default one that came with Atrix. I use inbuilt battery app in "nighttime saver" mode thou.

I will turn wifi off through settings and later, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, I will notice that it has restarted. This is without reboot. At first I deleted all the previous connections, but it still did this. I have even done a hard reset, flashed back to stock and I continue to have this issue. When it is on I have the data connection issue seen on multiple forums where I have to reboot my phone to get a data connection back (not calls, no sms, no email). This happens even though I have never reset up any wifi locations.
Any other specific questions?
BTW, I have the battery saver that came on the phone in performance mode.
try this to see if it helps. go to settings>wireless and networks>wifi settings> press settings button> advanced> turn wifi sleep policy to never.
maybe that will stop it from turning off.
I actually want it to STAY off when I turn it off. I would love to have it on sometimes but since that crashes my data connection, I want to keep it off for now til the fix for that is out.
Also, it seemed worse before I installed GingerBlur, but it still happens, just less often.

Did you flash the new radio after going to 2.3.4?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159505
May or may not help!
I flashed att pudding full 183 then cherryblur 0.5d...I don't think that either of those flashed new radio...
I believe I have N_01.77.15P now...going to update to latest version.
I believe this only affects the cellular radio, but I after doing some research it seems if you are going to be on 2.3.4 you should upgrade to this one..

Hi.
I usually clean the crap via titanium.
I am running Bionix-V 2.2
is there a guide or a way to know what's save to remove in order to improve overall speed, memory and so on?
there are stuff like:
WlanTest
wipecounterevciever
vpn services
TTS service
SNS
SimDetachNotifier
SIM Toolkit
shutdown app
setupup wizard
service mode 2.2.
self test mode
roseEUKor

CoolEUKor

com.(lot's of these)............................
ChocoEUKor
certificate installer
camera firmware
brcmBluethoosertvice
badge provider
appwidgetpicker
so much stuff that usually isn't there with custom clean roms
Anyone? Is there no guide? Link?
I am sure much of these are crap, and removing them can be great. But which?
First of all, most of those are /system apps, so I would not delete any of them until you first "freeze" them with TBpro and see if there are any adverse effects from doing so. much easier to defrost that to push back to /system/app and set permissions. If nothing happens, then you can delete.
I usually delete the picoTTS and keep the appwidgetpicker (this is when you longpress on home and your widgets pull up, it show Beautiful Widgets (19) rather than 19individual widgets.
Here (see below but the thread is a good read too) and here and here is a list of bloatware for your viewing pleasure (simple Google search pulled all these up btw). Almost anything with com...and is red in TB, you should leave it alone.
First off all the Standard Apps:
AccountAndSync.apk/odex -> The app in the drawer, not the settings.
AddToHome.apk/odex
AudioPostcard.apk/odex
Avatar.apk/odex -> The app that launches Avatar in the video player.
BuddiesNow.apk/odex
Dlna.apk/odex [Allshare]
FlashPlugin.apk/odex
GoGo.apk/odex
Infoalarm.apk/odex [Daily Briefing]
KindleStub.apk/odex
Layer-samsung.apk/odex
MediaHub.apk/odex
Memo.apk/odex
Mini Diary.apk/odex
MobiTV.apk/odex
MyAccountStub_4-5-10.apk/odex
Myfiles.apk/odex
Sims3_Samsung_Embed_Launcher.apk/odex
slackerradio.apk/odex
Swype-Tips.apk/odex
Telenav.apk/odex
thinkdroid.apk/odex [ThinkFree Office]
vvm-signed.apk/odex -> T-Mobile Visual Voicemail [can be re-downloaded from the market. for some reason that version is the preferred one.]
VoiceRecorder.apk/odex
VoceDialer.apk/odex
Writeandgo.apk/odex
TouchwizWidgets:
Day.apk/odex

THANKS THANK YOU THANK YOU !

If it matters, mine is a P509 - my question is whether any of you have found, short of custom ROM, a way to remove bloat apps, or freeze them effectively, given a stock LG ROM? I run kernel 2.6.32.9 and it is very stable. just wanting to free up cycles and memory
the reason I can't get along with custom ROM is the lack of wifi calling [that is, the way it is supposed to work, via T-mo]
Will Titanium Pro do this? any nasty side effects?
root - delete the apps.
TiBackup - freeze or delete.
All of these work. I just test-searched this subforum for remove bloatware and was rewarded with an abundance of information. This also contains info on the likeliest followup question, "what apps can I remove?".
FWIW, I find greatest stability and battery life on a sanitized stock ROM but run CM7 on principle. I use Google Voice + Groove IP for my wifi calling needs. Works fine and doesn't eat TMO voice mins.
I just go to system/app and delete the apps or "bloatware" that you dont need, titanium backup does the same but you have the option to freeze. If you want to get rid of it quick and easy just go to system/app and delete the app you want gone. Be careful what you delete, stay away from system apps that your phone will need. I would make a backup first before you start deleting just to be safe hope this helps
you are my man! i use the same plan with T-mo - do everything I can on wifi, keep data turned off 90% of the time, send pics via GoSMS Pro...
Thank you both, fratermus and 'droid311 for the help.
If you don't mind let me list a few that I ASSUME I can safely remove - if you see something dangerous pls let me know
- Drivesmart
- Telenav
- thinkfree office
- visual voicemail
- Voice Search
- web2go home
- Pacman demo [good grief]
- places
- latitude
- fm radio [never worked]
- dinerdash
- doodle
ok fire away
btw - re: titanium does the freeware version do the trick or the upgrade?
I'll have a look at system/root - not an expert su by any means

root - delete the apps.

OK, friends I got it rolling now. handful of that stuff uninstalled.
could I bug you for just a couple of specifics?
- Keyboards: I have been running the Gingerbread keybd for awhile and like it well enough - the handset still has he original keyboard installed. is it safe to uninstall/remove that or is it involved with the core ROM?
- Similarly, I seem to have three Messaging things stacked: there is the original which I guess was on the handset from the edge: there is an Update to the stock Messaging app, then there is GoSMS Pro which is what I actually use. Is it safe to uninstall the other/stock messaging apps?
- Maps [latitude] is a pig - it loads three modules at powerup and I never even use it [my eyes and that screen with ddetailed maps,, no worky well]. safe to remove? answer seems to be yes.
that's all. I am a happy camper
Are you running cm7?
-You would probaly get a foreclose if you delete it, I would go into play store (android market) and find the keyboard you want, download it and push it to system/app then delete the old gingerbread key board.
-I wouldnt move/delete the stock messaging apps because I think (not positive) but gosms pro would need your stock messaging app to run off of.
-yes maps can be safe to remove
-Also reading your list of your bloat ware, they all can be deleted safely with no harm
thank you so much!
no, i'm running 2.2 LG rom and it is so stable I am ok to stay here, especially because WIFI calling works like butter... excellent.
uninstalled maps, finally - nothing else would stop it from loading up. no harm done, as you indicated.
all this has managed to free up about 35% of the meager ROM.
I guess this is about as good as it gets if one retains wifi calling, gmail/voice, and basic decent apps like a good media player, maps [that is, 3rd party], sms/mms, memos, calendar, reminders, notifier[missed message flasher the only one I have found that actually works]
No problem man, make sure you always backup

I am getting bad battery performance and I want to disable and even totaly uninstall few stock packages which I am sure I will not need any time.
So far what I have done.
Synchronize set to Manuall
Closing applications that I am not using
Disabled Live wallpaper
Set phone to GSM only (2G)
Uninstalled Mccafee
Disabled LTE via HTC Thunderbolt (not sure it worked or not but message showing it is disabled)
Disabled Google + and Exchange service
Removed all widgets
Disabled NFC, Bluetooth, Wifi, Data network etc.
Disabled keypress tones and keypress vibrations
Set brightness to 30%
Disabled Bravia Engine
What else I can do to improve battery life.
Few peoples also suggest to remove some programs such as bloadwares, foursquare, photo viewer, moving wallpaper, facebook integration, twitter integration, photo and movie integration etc.
I also noticed alot of other programs are also auto starting even when I close them such Google+, Maps, Search, Play store etc. I also don't need alot of other things such as LiveWire, NFC and other stcock packages.
Would be better if there is any Clean or Vanilla ROM for Xperia S available. Also suggest me best Task Manager and Battery tool I am currently using Go Power Master and Task Manager.
Note: Noticed that System is consuming more then 80% of battery (ICS Settings > Battery) is it normal?

if u want a custom rom that saves battery u can use cyanogenmod or aokp.. cyanogenmod is about fully functional but aokp is not,
there is a rom called ka sspeed it does save battery but not like the vanilla based formers..
i also suggest u use battery saving softwares like juice defender or what i prefer greenpower.. they work while the phone is asleep (or u are as greenpower has night mode) and disconnect all connections or connects them intervally..
there is a tweak that i personally havent tried yet called PIMP MY ROM.. the majority say its good but i cant give opinions here..
for me i use ka sspeed from krabappel with greenpower premium and it gives me good battery life.. like 20 hours on daily use but without 3g!
