I'm writing a game (OpenGL intensive) for Android. I have Asus Transformer. I can test the application easily - even in different resolutions (I set it up to open in a small 320x200 or 480x320 rectangle).
The only problem I have - how to test how it fares on slower hardware? I considered buying Android phone but the only ones that were in my price range didn't have GPU (so my game won't work on them anyway). One person tested it on Desire Z and it was a little slow - so I have to optimize it but it's hard without a way to test it (using someone for help wouldn't work because I have to test it several times an hour).
I have a few questions:
1. Do you know what cheap(est) phone I can buy that has OpenGL ES 2.0 and can be used for testing apps? Or maybe some cheap Chinesse tablet?
2. If I publish a game on the Market and it will work only on some phones (and all Tegra2 tablets), will I get many bad reviews for that?
For those interested - here is link to the alpha version of the game (information if it is fast or slow on your hardware will help - but if it's slow on Desire Z it will probably be slow on most phones, yes?).
Well first of all you can limit which exact devices see your game on the market. If you want only tegra2 can limit to only tegra2. as for opengl es 2, it was standardized at os level 2.1 or 2.2. I believe it was the former tho not positive. I would check on that and then any phone that shipped with that os version should be good to go testing. I would NOT test on emulator, it uses the desktop opengl drivers and will not give u a good representation of what it will be like on an actual device.
imo get the slowest opengl es 2 device u can find, optimize it for that much as possible, then any other devices should be good to go. Of course there will be alot of hardware differences but you can test for everything.
Edit: You can also do beta testing...but i can not stress this enough keep ur beta testers on a SHORT leash. as my experiences have gone you will get feedback from less then 10% of your participants. Which almost makes it not worth it. Public beta testing if u can get to a large enough user base can be effective tho.
Thanks. I'll probably buy a used or even a little broken old phone with Android 2.1 or 2.2.
Hi to all.
Has anyone tried it or is aware of any review on Easypix Easypad EP970? I am thinking on buying one, since specs look very good without me being an expert on CPU performance data (9.7 capacitive, Rockchip R2918 1.2Ghz, 1Gb, 8Gb, 8000mAh, Gingerbread) and price is rather low for these specs.
Also, does anyone know of any custom ROM for it? The source code is readiy available from their site so I guess someone with knowledge can do it easily.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
unfortunately this tablet is not focused from many people - the price and specs are fine - i would say the closest competitor is the Archos Arnova 9 G2
better specs vs better screen for 240€ - i would like to see a video about the quality of the easypad 970 screen
Android 4.0 for Rockchip 2918: Link
Thanks. So, am I right to assume that any Rockchip 2918 9.7" based ICS or Honeycomb ROM would do for the Easypad as well?
Talking about the Arnova 9 G2, it looks interesting indeed. Slightly slower CPU, one camera less, slightly thicker, but 50 Euro less!!
On the Arnova's downside, no mention on the battery capacity though (will be hard to beat Easypad's 8000mAh), and worse of all not avaiable for sale as yet.
I guess Prestigio will be coming soon with a similar model as well.

There would be still a ROM portation nessecary to adjust certain aspects and implement certain driver. But at least it should be simple for experienced Modder.

Yeah at beginning next year there will be some very similar and interesting devices in the low budget area.
Archos Arnova 9 G2; 10 G2
Easypad 970,
Prestigio
and also Coby Link
For now the Archos has the biggest community, i think root is already possible for Arnova 9 G2, because of the similarity to the Arnova 10 G2. Maybe next year other devices will be community or company supportet as well - unfortunately no one can really say.
Interestingtimes ahead then.
I think it is wiser not to rush now and wait for next year. Let's see.
Thanks
the easypad970 seems to be a good purchase now
Link
its identical to cube U9GT2
therefore easy to root and Android 4.0 final release is coming soon
Happy new year.
I got the 970 a couple of days before the new year. I couldn't resist the temptation when I had it in front of me. I also bought one for my bro as well.
Already I rooted it with Gingerbreak (minor snag after that, during shutdown, but workaround by another app), loaded with apps, and tested on dlna multimedia servers, etc etc.
Generally happy with it. Now is about time to experiment with ICS. Just to confirm that I can use a U9GT2 ROM without a problem, even though this one has 8Gb NAND instead of 16Gb of U9GT2?
Sorry for the noob question
BTW thanks for the links. Great help!!
grz - i got one too its cheap, good performance, good quality, and has a excellent display
i would recommend to change the Launcher and the Keyboard, to e.g.:
Go Launcher Ex and Hacker´s Keyboard
for Gaming install Chainfire3DPro and within Chainfire install OpenGL Driver
for Gameloft Games, like Order & Chaos you need to change the build.prop (\System): Link (Thread #8)
HardKeyboard + Mouse + USBStick work also fine
and yes - you can use the Cube u9gt2 ROMs - the USB Driver doesnt work as fine as the
970 but it works - with a installed cube ROM u need to use a RKManager to switch off the Tablet,
then press Volume (-) + Power keep pressing and put the USB cable in the computer, then
the Device will be recognized from the RKManager und you can take away the Fingers
Thanks for the good info. Congrats on your new gadget!
Will try games etc, but at the moment I am trying to find the best calendar and contacts apps in order to sync with Outlook and keep the categories, and some networking functions.
There is something in the German forum that you kindly provided the link, that I need to clear up: "richtet 1GB anstatt 500MB für Apps ein". Google translation implies not clearly that if I use the Cube ROM, it gives me 1Gb for installing apps instead of 500Mb as in Easypad. Is that correct?
If so, out of curiosity then, any ideas why Easypix gave us only 500Mb (which have almost run out on mine and I am also using Apps2SD)? And where does Cube take that extra space from? Is it from the NAND Flash memory which it has double than ours? If so, then we Easypad owners wouldn't have any problem with half the NAND and even then reduced by another 500Mb? Or is it just too trivial and I shouldn't bother about it? Because I need that 1Gb badly

Hey,
I'm one of those germans with an Easypad 970
Well I upgraded my stroage for Apps from 500mb to 1gb without any problems. I think the Cube U9GT2 Rom upgrade changed the partition sizes too. So we will lose 500mb from the normal NAND flash an can use it for apps.
greetings
yes its a decision for the ROM maker between more storage for the system or for the user - i really prefer 1GB for Apps
I would recommend the new Cube Firmware 1.05 = Android 4.0.3 (Source), i tried this one out the whole day and im very pleased. It runs very stable, has 1GB for Apps, flash works and some Apps look really good with ICS.
for Calendar - i use "Jorte" and youtube is here
Good.
I am also thinking of installing this specific firmware (or any update) by next week and hope by that time someone will fix the adb issue.
Did you notice any improvement on battery life?
no unfortunately i didnt notice any improvement in battery life, and in the next days we will see probably some more ROMs so there is no need to hurry
Hi, I also have the Easypad 970 and very pleased with the quality of the screen and overall speed of the tablet. Unfortunately, it seems there are some devices (like mine) with faulty/bad WiFi chips and this is a real problem. Currently, trying to get it fixed with easypix support and respons is OK so far. Tomorrow I will try to get an RMA for it.
I was wondering if the new Galaxy Player 70 Plus (YP-GB70D) is worth getting from all people that own in.
I've been thinking about getting a PMP/MP3 player of late & read about the new GP70 (YP-GB70D) that was recently released. I was wondering if the older version (YP-GB70) its worth getting? I do currently have an AT&T Galaxy Note & prefer not to use it as a media player even though I could.
I was wondering if it's worth getting since I can get it for $330ish from http://www.exportprive.com/en/samsu...-70-yp-gb70-galaxy-s-wifi-50-32go-blanc-.html

I considered the 5.0 but didn't like it cause of the 8GB since the new one has a 32GB version. I know I can add a microSD card on both but I prefer as much as possible for the internal memory.

For some reason... this looks like it could potentially be a scam. A new one was announced, but I would NOT trust that retailer from a first glance. I mean look at it, they say on that site that it has a 3mp front cam? Doubt it.

I have bought numerous items from them in the past so they are legit. I wonder if its a misprint on the camera. thanks for making me research further on it.
EDIT: after further research this isn't the new one I was after.
EDIT2: Found the correct version Yp-GB70D

So no one with the Galaxy 5 wifi YP-G70 can tell me if they are worth it or not? if they are then I plan to get the new released Korean version.
If you care about Android development and want more of a variety of roms to choose from then I'd choose the Galaxy S I9000. If you don't mind the fact that the Galaxy Player doesn't come with SAMOLED screen and a lot activity in the development section, then go for it.

The international version isn't that much different from the US version. Plus can you really justify paying that much for an outdated MP3 player when you can just purchase a dual core device with better development for less in the market?

Yah, if I'm going to spend that much then it will be for the newly dual core version (YP-GB70D). Actually, I just put in an order for the newly Korean released YP-70D, but started to get buyers remorse after seeing the final price with 2-3 international shipping.
Hopefully someone will start dev'n for the YP-70D in the future.

CONS:
The 5MP camera on GB70D totally sucks, because it's omap chip. Compared to 70GB Korean model (which has 5MP camera too) the colours are washed out, the focus is not sharp and the video is a joke. You can't set saturation, brightness etc. The video app can't pause now.
With current firmware (as of April 2012) it can not play most of the 720p videos smoothly (quite a joke for a media player).
The battery seems to be drained faster then original model.
There's not included offline 3d navigation iNavi, as was the case with previous model.
The display is not as bright as before and the colours are not correct (yellow hue).
The display still lags, in some HD videos it's quite bad.
In direct sun the display is still dark.
It has the same videochip as before, PoverVR SGX540. Some games run better, but many of them look the same or don't run at all. It definitely is not a device for 3D HD games.
Wakeup is remarkably slower now (sometimes 3 seconds).
The default sound app still sucks.
It's made in China, the previous model was made in Korea.
As for the white design, I like the original black/white design more.
PROS:
The dualcore does it's job, especially if you run torrents or other downloads in background and browse the web in foreground. It's fast.
1GB of memory is a significant upgrade.
The UI and fonts seem to be a bit smoother.
Conclusion:
It's faster. Soon there would be custom ROMs and upgrades as there are for the previous model, so many things will be fixed. But the camera sucks and the videochip is the same. So something is wrong, this was supposed to be a multimedia device.
Note: I could compare three models, all Korean versions.

Would you buy this model again or another if you had the chance to do it over again? If another, which device.
Could you compare the 5.0 series with the YP-GB70D? Just curious on your opinion of them.
I would not buy it. Omap cameras suck, that's what cheap LG devices use. Also the omap dualcore in GB70D isn't the same as exynos or tegra. As for 5.0 series, it's the same as Korean GB70, except Korean GB70 has 5MP camera (good one!) and DBM TV.
I would buy Galaxy Note instead, even if you don't need a phone. I think Samsung now goes the way Apple did before Steve Jobs returned. Too many products, in the end none of them done properly. Just look how many Galaxy Tabs are there now. It's a joke.

If you're talking about an Int Galaxy Note, I had one & sold it. I'm currently using an AT&T Galaxy Note. I seriously thought the new version of the SGP would be awesome with dual core, hence my reason in wanting one.
Since I was able to cancel my YP-GB70D 32GB order, I'm either going to find a cheap alternative or just buy more batteries for my I717. I would save a ton if I went with more batteries route.
Hmmm this is interesting... I haven't had any of these issues with my YP-GB70D. I don't use the camera on it however. I've only used the front facing camera with Skype and haven't had any complaints from the other end.
I just got a used GP70+ (YP-GB70D). I am quite disappointed with it - the major problem is the Adobe Flash performance of videos played in the web browser.
The GP70+ has flash 10.3 installed. Since Flash player is no longer available in Google Play, I use backup copies from my other phones and tablets and .apks from apktop. Flash 11 does NOT work - either causes force closes, or start playing and freezes. I installed the last version of Flash 10 before 11 (10.3.186.7), and it can only play up to 480p video - NO HD Flash, that completely freezes.
This is really unacceptable for a dual core OMAP4430 device. My GP5.0 and the Galaxy S phone has a single core Hummingbird CPU. It has Flash 11.1 and can play up to 720p Flash video in the browser.
The device also feels a little sluggish for a dual core tablet, even when using GO Launcher. It has a 800 x 480 screen, which is lower resolution than eg. Kindle Fire (which also has OMAP4430), the GPU drives fewer pixels and everything should be faster.
The screen is also not as bright and crisp as the GP5.0, not to mention the AMOLED screen of the Galaxy S or S2.
One big plus is that 1080p STORED videos (MP4, DIVX) play flawlessly with MX player - MX player shows that hardware decoding is enabled. HW acceleration is NOT supported in the single core GP5.0, and it can only play up to 720p (some not all, depending on bitrate).
P.S. By the way, if any GP70+ owners want a copy of the rooted firmware of this player (GB70KRLD2), please post your request here or PM me (I don't want the upload link to be killed quickly). I searched high and low and finally found it in a Chinese forum (Google Translate saves the day!). Thank goodness it was still good for download.

Well I just hope that it is not the Android story all over again - rushed to get implemented, years to improve.
Hey I took a punt and bought a titanium 97 the one with the nice screen 2048 x 1536 (retina level PPI)
Anyho the device is OK a bit heavy but not bad for the money (you get what you pay for). The big issue so far is that when you buy the device its display is in "normal" mode. I found out that it means the resolution is actually set to 1600 x 1200. That's fine and there is a setting to change it to HD mode. When you so the device reboots into full 2048 x 1536.
The problem is that in the HD mode the device is almost unusable. The lag is epic. The browser is a total right off. Also in HD mode there are moments where the screen just has a senior moment and flickers madly. This is very visible when entering text or pressing menu within the browser.
Out of HD mode the device is OK. But its annoying that you buy a device due to the screen and you then can't use it.
The only other thing so far is that the WiFi is shocking (is you must be in the same room as the router) and there are a few force closes even on things like the over air archos update software.
If anyone wants me to test anything let me know.
because archos used a cpu that dosen't support that res. see here

Same problem for me in HD mode... I `m waiting for a responce from archos technical support.
Maca does your check for software update fail when you try it?
yes indie13, fail with "code -4".

Build number:

JRO3H 20121220.151410
Android version :4.1.1
Other bug found on settings app:
- in wireless & networks -> more : Mobile networks menu is ENABLED but terminal has only wifi !!!
- in wireless & networks -> Portable hotspot : menu is ENABLED (why?) and clicking application crash!
I have written one message to archos technical support and so far have had no response
HD mode is really unusable due lag , flashes & artifacts on rendering.
I'm hoping for a new stable firmware.
A positive note:
Upgrading "Archos video" app seems improve playback on HD mode.

Maca we are very much on the same page. I've got the same firmware and the same bugs as you. I also found the browser bombs out if you go into debug mode and then try and change settings. It really does feel like a rushed ROM.
There is no sense of project butter anywhere to be found on the ROM. By using a tasks manager and limiting the number of active processes in the menu I be got a pretty OK experience in non HD mode.
Re video I use MX player which IMHO is the best out there. Also dumped the stock keyboard, using Kii instead and I'm using Apex launcher to replace the stock as it has more options and seems more stable. The YouTube app doesn't seem to play well could be lack of power or something.
But all in all I'm not unhappy with my purchase. I came from an Asus Transformer Prime and then Infinity and both had massive problems with the tegra processor. The web experience of this device with the stock browser is similar in terms of performance to either of those two high end devices I had before. You get what you pay for really but seeing as this didn't cost me £600 like the infinity its hard to dislike it in the same way.
Just got a firmware update. Something has changed as the device feels a lot quicker. I have a feeling they have done something to the CPU speed as it is quick but burning through battery at a pace now.
HD mode seems to work better but still has big freakouts when you open a menu on a webpage in browser or even open the settings in browser.
Youtube seems to work now whereas it didn't really before.
Navigating home screens and swiping away apps has benn speed up a lot
I came back just to write you that I discovered that there was a firmware released on 20130130 !

Out of HD mode, is the tablet smooth and fast?
Sent from my ARCHOS 80G9 using xda app-developers app
Steve, out of HD mode the device isnt bad. Browsing seems fast and fluid with the stock browser, chrome is a little slow. Even in 'Normal mode' you are still getting 1600 x 1200 res which inst too bad. in many ways its a better browsing experience than my Transformer Infinity which cost a lot more!
There are a few hiccups with the device and a few force closes, but you get what you pay for. An example for you is....at the moment i cant access the display option in settings as it force closes but if i were to do a wipe on the device it comes back.
Also bear in mind that this is only the 2nd release firmware so there is scope for it to get better, in terms of the old force close and HD mode.
By the way i ran in HD mode for a few days after the last firmware install and although the screen went mad every now and again it wasnt as bad as on the first firmware and also the device was still pretty quick so i could almost live with it. The only reason i came out of HD mode again was that the battery life in HD mode was very very more, at some points i seemed to be losing 1 % of battery every 2 minutes. Out of HD mode the battery seems more reasonable.
Hope this helps.

The only reason i came out of HD mode again was that the battery life in HD mode was very very more, at some points i seemed to be losing 1 % of battery every 2 minutes. Out of HD mode the battery seems more reasonable.
Hope this helps.

Yes it does. I have a major love hate relationship with my g9. Love it when it works smooth, but that's not a lot of time. Does the 97 have Bluetooth and GPS?

No Steave, no BT and GPS on Titanium 97 HD.
Thanks.
Hmmm, if I could get my 80g9 to the point the GPS was reliable and work with oryxmaps I would pick up a 97.
My GPS in my tablet now is flakey.

Hi Guys,
I have been looking at getting the Titanium 97 HD for a few weeks now. I have been trying to look for reviews. There has been a lot of people stating that it cannot operate at such a high resolution with the CPU and GPU implemented. It is nice to see the posts above stating actual experiences with this.
I was willing to give this tablet a chance based on the price point, but I do not think I will now. I am disappointed that it does not have GPS or BT.
BTW, I am still thinking about getting the Gen10 80 xs with keyboard cover for my son. I think this tablet should be ok for him to use for gaming and his homework. He is only 8 and it should be fine for his needs.

I'm starting to wish i had waited for the Platinum 97 (or 116) as that device is basically the same as the Titanium 97 just with a quad core CPU and mini HDMI. I bet the Quad core will be able to handle the HD mode and that could be due to the extra cores and the different CPU model.
All in all, out of HD mode the device is very usable! I take it to meetings at work, use it for Citrix and mobile email. The Browser is very solid and better than my old Asus Infinity. Also i'd said this before but even in Normal Mode, the resolution is still ok at 1600 x 1200, higher than you would get on a nexus 7 for example.
I do have some massive light bleed on the bottom edge of the screen which is lucky hidden in landscape mode by the notification bar. In Portrait mode it is very noticeable and i hear others are having problems with the same thing.
I really find it hard to hate. I think this is due to the price and the fact that the stock browser experience is very very solid! (this is my 6th Tablet after 3 transformers, an Advent Vega and a nexus 7)
If you have any questions or want me to test anything please ask.
Here is a little video review
I'm very happy with this tablet, I had Galaxy Tab 8.9, various cheap china 7-10 inch tablets, previous Archos models like 101 G9 and done short term test with even more models like Note 10. And Archos 97 HD is the first Android tablet with a decent screen for web browsing and magazines, the first to offer a decent performance. Especially for an Android device, because they all lag and have lots of problems, but this Archos 97 impressed me with smoothness then loading web pages and scrolling through magazines. The first Android tablet that is actually pleasant to use.
The only complaint is lack of bluetooth and a decent video decoding hardware support, but other then that it's the very first decent Android tablet, because all the previous Android tablets were total peace of crap, mainly because of low res screens and very poor performance, lots of lags and crap with older versions before Jelly Bean.
to me it's ok for it's price.
Hi!
To me this tablet seems still good for it's price, it's price, here where i live, has even been dropped from 225 € to 199 €, which saddens me because i was an early buyer.
Hd mode i find unusable, but couldn't care less, since normal mode is good enough resolution-wise. Battery drops few or even 1% over night when in standby mode, but gaming eats power up very quickly.
5Mb camera is ok, though to my taste images suffer from too strong edge sharpening algorithm being applied to them.
What concerns me most, and the reason why i post is, the device is new (or exotic?) and i cannot find custom firmware for it on the net, yet.
Does anybody know a good howto for rooting this tablet? I'm n00b, can google, though.
Other than that for quality tablet i'd take nexus7 - i like the 7" dimension better - easier to hold with one hand. For price under 200 € i'd consider titanium 97, still.
Cheers!

It looks decent but lack of GPS and Bluetooth is a deal breaker. I guess I can use an external GPS receiver via sub can I?

I'm trying to find an honest answer and I have a few speculations but I'm not sure.
For example, I just purchased an HTC One which is running the very latest Snapdragon S600 chip and Adreno 320 and I'm comparing it to the iPhone 5 (A6 and PowerVR SGX543MP3).
Here are a few applications (mostly games) that I've tried on both devices:
* Fruit Ninja - Touch input is delayed by about half a second on the HTC One but instant on iOS.
* Simpons Tapped Out - The voice sometimes stutters and moving buildings just isn't as fluid as iOS.
* Browser (Chrome and Android default) - Scrolling isn't as smooth.
Like I said, I'm honestly not biased one way or the other but this is just what I have noticed. The iPhone 5 has a much lower resolution but I've also had similar results on the iPad Mini (1024x768 resolution).
Does every application written for Android need to optimized for every individual CPU and perhaps these applications weren't optimized yet?

Oh Christ, what have you done!!!!!!
Prepare to get slated.
You've got a point though, I just moved back to Android from an iPhone 4s and for all its faults, the apps on the iPhone were more polished. Not all by the way, the apps I noticed a difference in were Sky Sports News and Facebook and BBC Sport. Haven't played games to be honest.
A bunch of random speculative reasons:
Less hardware variation; compiled apps vs java; multitasking is not as good on iOS; and I did read a big discussion once about how Android graphics subsystem has more layers of abstraction that are costly, but I don't recall the details.
I'm not sure the difference is that large anymore.
This thread is probably going to become a troll-fest. It doesn't really belong in a device specific forum.
Yup it's true, but less evident in latest Androids (4+). I think it's down to how software works.
I have bought iPhone because it's only decent phone without roms, and I was a flashoholic (about 10 roms a week). I instantly noticed polish and speed, plus a totally different touch recognition. You can hold one finger on iphone constantly and still do "single finger" stuff-the phone just ignores it after a while. Scrolling also works much nicer after you let go, deceleration seems just right . I started reading this forum only a week or two ago because I think i'm healed after 6 months, and I will get One as soon as it's available in my country (still faiting for lazy carrier f**s). Things OP noticed are very well known to anyone switching. It's normal and you simply have to get used to it. If it starts laging do a restore or flash a rom (and here we go again...)

So true. Plenty of interesting points raised so far actually, but why is this in the HTC One forums?

it takes a while longer before some software is optimized for a new soc, those games will become more fluent.
scrolling is fine, I think apple patented smooth scrolling on mobile devices, just use a different less high profile browser, eg. try opera mobile and see how smooth scrolling can be on Android too.

Because the OP thinks that the best phone on the market is not apple enough.
Belonging to Android General maybe? But a good point. . . ready for the Trolling?
