[Q] Galaxy SII with UGKG2 baseband - going "back" to a different stock firmware
Hi guys,
Now I've just got a Galaxy SII from Bell (and unlocked it), and the baseband is UGKG2. I've seen the discussion and well understand there is no stock firmware available at the time, so if I flash it, there's no way back for the original one (until posted by Samsung).
Here's my question - can I securely flash a different, but STOCK firmware to this model? What I actually need is to install a stock Russian firmware, so that Russian is available as the interface language. If so, which flavour should I use? There is a bunch of official Russian firmwares (e.g. I9100XEKE1, I9100XWKE2, I9100XWKF1, I9100XXKG1, I9100XWKF3), but which of these should I reasonably expect to be compatible with UGKG2?
Thanks a lot for help.
They should all be compatible, as far as i know the bell gs2 is identical to the ones sold in europe. The radio is even the same, since the ones sold in europe also work with 3g in north america, so you should be good to go. Id just figure out whatever is the newest russian firmware and flash it, also check if its carrier or not, since I'm sure you wouldn't want some russian carrier bloat on it or something.
If you want the newest rom possible, id recommend the XXKG3, its not russian, but its the 2.3.4. Im running it on my bell sgs2, works great. and its generic.
Also I'm pretty sure the generic european firmwares all feature russian as a language, so you wouldn't specifically need to flash a russian rom id think.
good luck.
Edit* just checked my XXKG3, and it has russian listed as a language.

Thanks a lot for the reply. So you say I can go for 2.3.4 too and shouldn't necessarily stick with 2.3.3? Sorry, I am new to this stuff.
Could you give a link to XXKG3, I'd love to try that one out.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182434 theres the link to the XXKG3 fw... Well its up to you what you want to flash they will all work, but the XXKG3 is the newest one there is (2.3.4), and its also the one I'm running, so i know it works great for me, can't really say what version/ how old the russian ones would be.

I just had a look through that thread, lots of guys have problems with flash in browsing, but it's not apparent what their original firmware was... Did you too have UGKG2 before you flashed XXKG3? They also say something about "Frankenstein", is that the one I get via the link you gave earlier? Yeah, and they mention repartition - did you do that too?
Yeah, i have it flashed and i went from the bell rom to it, i did check repartition since it ensures that you will not have any problems as its a complete clean flash. And yes I'm aware of the flash issue, i hate flash for personal reasons ( on a mobile device, as it leads to general lagyness and drains battery) and i always turn it off on any android phone I've used, so i could care less about the flash bug but it might be a deal breaker for some i understand.
as far as the link, the first link given in the main post, thats the actual rom, the stock rom no frankenstien or anything. I didn't flash frankenstien just the original rom.

Great. Things get a bit clearer. But doesn't YouTube work on Flash (sorry if that's a stupid question)? 'Cause the end user of my firmware-changing exploits will likely spend a lot of time on YouTube.
Yeah, and is your model I9100 or I9100M? Mine has got an M to it.

Uhm, the issue is only present in the browser to my knowledge it occurs when you press on some flash banner or something, the flash still works in the youtube app.
Mine was the bell phone, i9100m, the i9100 and i9100m are identical, i suppose bell just added an m to their variant to feel special or something. Makes no diff.

Cool. So I guess I'll actually try it - with repartition checked (it makes sense), although all over the net they advise in huge capitals to uncheck it.

haha really? i read later on in the thread with guys who checked repartition had suspected they had better battery life, i must not have noted the huge capital thing, i always thought a total clean flash would be better. Anyways I've flashed that thing twice with repartition checked, and my phone didn't blow up or anything haha. it should be noted that if u check reparation, you have to load the pit file too (obviously)
Yeah, stupid bell, the original galaxy s was also called i9000m.

Hoo, really? Well... whatever...
I've browsed through a couple of dozens instructions on flashing today, and most of the time they specifically told people to uncheck the repart. box in Odin. But as XXKG3 comes with a pit file (I understand it does), it makes total sense.
Great, thanks a lot. I'll try and flash this thing and get back with results.

Yeah, good luck. Be comfortable with odin before you attempt it though, watch some youtube videos and such as odin can be dangerous if not used correctly. But its simple, the rom comes with 4 files or so and u gotta load them in the correct boxes, pit , phone, csc and pda .

One last thing - did you have to root your phone to do this flash, or is it supposed to through without rooting first?

You don't need root or anything, as your phone hasn't even booted yet when its in downloading mode lol, its in boot loader mode. Root not required at all for odin roms, only CWM requires it.

Hey, it worked! Lots of interface languages and, surprise, surprise, NO LETTER "M" in the name of the device any longer Still doesn't play MTS files (videos I shot with a Canon camera that writes in AVCHD format), though, but it is remedied through to buying DICE player.
Thanks a lot, now THIS is what I was looking for! Eat it, Bell

No, I did not do a wipeout first, I just prepared Odin and the ROM files, and then pressed the three buttons on the phone. And it worked.
I have a Canadian Bell Mobility GS2.
I9100MUG KG2
kernel says 2.6.35.7 I9100ZS KE7
android 2.3.3
No problems connecting to PC thru USB, bluetooth, or kies wifi.
Kies is supposed to update the firmware automatically, but has given me a message that my version of phone doesnt support firmware upgrades. Does this mean I'm stuck with my firmware, or does it mean that I'm already up to date?
It means there hasn't been an update released for the Bell phone yet.
Does anyone know if the Bell firmware can be changed to an EU firmware, so we are able to install custom ROMs?

Yes, it works. However, there is no way to go back to stock bell firmware right now, so you're voiding your warranty by doing so.

Thanks Electroz, your help is much appreciated.
Would I have to flash a stock EU from first so I can get CWM on the phone? I am very sorry if this sounds like a noob question, but I am very new to the SG2 and a lot of this is a bit foreign to me right now, I am used to the rooting and installing on the x10.
If there is a thread I can search to guide me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it, or what I should be searching for, it would help alot. Looking at some of the custom ROMs people are putting out, they look amazing and I would love to try them out

Nope, you can just flash a cwm kernel and install the custom rom from there. No need to flash an EU rom first.

Don't worry mate, 2.3.3 is the latest firmware in some countries so it just depends where you live. Not to mention that KIES never really works to be honest, it'd be much simpler to manually flash, good luck!

Ok, Strange :/. Well just use Odin, It won't void your warranty as long as you flash stock firmware. Check out Intratech's thread for the firmware. Like I said - If you ever get KIES working, it won't actually work (if that made sense).
Hi i bought a new samsung galaxy s2 the other day and immediately checked for updates ota. it said an update was available, so i downloaded it and clicked install. the phone rebooted and began updating but once it got to 14 percent it stopped, rebooted then said update was unsuccessful. So i connected to kies and it told me my phone wasnt compatible for updates via kies. any ideas?
Kies is useless, if you really want to update you can use odin yourself... up to you and voids warranty
Try uninstalling and reinstalling but too be honest, forget kies...
hmm. ok. any ideas on why the ota update stops at 14 percent? im on stock 2.3.4 and not rooted.
yes, because kies is rubbish....
settings - about phone - update... Over The Air update is probably not available lol ...
With odin you can flash stock updates... really simple, but get used to the phone and if you want to take the leap, its not difficult but do plenty of reading, it can a bit daunting initially...
Is there anything wrong with your phone or just hungry for the latest version?
OTA is not in use/working for many yet but is supposed to be working when ICS is released .

You said you're in the US? Then there isn't a stock ROM for the i9100 for your region. I'm in the US too. You should be able to use any from Intratech's official firmware thread just fine. I flashed from XWKE7 for the UK (2.3.3), that came with the phone, to XXKI3 for Poland (2.3.5). Haven't found a need to upgrade beyond that yet, but there are newer versions available.

ahh of course :/ well thanks for the info!
I've had no luck with wifi ever since I started trying out ICS builds.
So far I've restricted myself to leaked official builds. The phone just can't hold onto a damn wifi signal even when kept right next to the bloody access point.
Every few minutes it disconnects. Sucks when you're trying to download a huge update for a game.
I don't know if there's an official build out for India, I'm using DDLP8 which was marked as for Nepal. It's definitely stable, but wifi connectivity is totally useless .
I use Wifi Analyzer, and it shows up signal strength as pretty good, using automatic channels, and usually it latches onto channel 11 or 13. My other devices at home have never faced any such problem so it's definitely not a router problem.
Is there anything else to check for?
Edit: I'm using XXLPQ, not DDLP8 (which is the baseband version). My bad.
not familiar of ddlp8 as cant find it as sammobile / intratech
why dont you skip the leaked firmwares and just use the official ones.
also complete wipe your phone flash a GB stock and dont do anything else ...., no root no restores and see if it hold wifi.

It appears DDLP8 is a modem/baseband version. Not the build version. That's why you couldn't find it. But I'm just guessing. OP will have to confirm or deny that.

Yes, you're right. I am using XXLPQ for Nepal, after reading that the official Nepal build works fine on the Indian version of the S2. Sammobile still does not show any official build for India. Does this make a difference?
I saw the problem moments after I had flashed the ROM and rebooted, i.e. with a clean phone set to factory defaults (and rooted) - so I doubt it's due to any other program interfering.

Only for getting "official" updates through Kies. If you don't care about getting updates through Kies, then no, it won't matter.

Wifi drivers are in the kernel, I believe. What method did you use to root? Did you flash a kernel to achieve root? Try flashing a new kernel, or flashing a stock ICS kernel and see if your Wifi still drops after that.
Well, you can also give a try by flashing your baseband/modem itself and see it will be any better. You have few ones in this topic, all flashable via CMW :

Ok, thanks for your links mate, at least i ve learned something. So, he can also give a try by testing different kernels then.
still having issues, you have to do some work..... flashing kernels is not the solution! it should work as is!
1: using cwm format system, cache, data, dalvik
2: flash one of the newer GB Stock Roms get one from intratech, using odin.
3: dont root just see if it works without doing anything, keep it stock. no restores nothing
if it works, it will work on ICS too now.

Well, if you re-read some of the posts above, he said he rooted, but didn't say HOW he rooted. If he rooted by flashing a kernel, then that could be what is screwing with his wifi, depending on WHICH kernel he used. So flashing a different kernel MAY actually solve his problem.
To my experience this problem is most likely related to the kernel you are using. The latest siyah kernel supposingly rectifies this issue. Why dont you give it a try?
I did and saw a big difference...
