[Q] Class 10 MicroSD card necessary? - HTC EVO 3D

So I am shopping for a new Micro SDHC card for my 3d and I am a bit torn. I have read that Class 6 is enough for our phones and that Class 10 would be overkill/unnecessary. I always thought faster would be better, but now I'm not sure. I have been looking at the 32gb by Patriot and Lexar, both in class 10.
I could save some mulah by getting a class 6 versus class 10, but that's not my concern. My main concern is compatibility and stability of the card with my 3d and future devices..
In addition to my desire for overall performance and stability, I should also note that I use bootmanager and would like optimal performance when booted to an SDcard ROM.
so my questions are these:
1. which class should I purchase, and why?
2. would you suggest any specific brand over the other? --I am currently looking at patriot and lexar, but open to any suggestions.
Thanks!

Not sure if there is a technical limit to the thoroughput on the sdcard device. With that said, if you're relying on the OS running off the sdcard (Boot Manager), you'll probably want the fasted sdcard possible. Personally, I wouldn't want my OS running off the sdcard, but not everybody sees this the same.
Regarding brands, I've had the best support with Sandisk sdcards. Received a "fake" one once from an authorized retailer and they sent me a replacement for free. No hassle and I was very impressed. I had an "Adata" class 8 sdcard die on my few months back and wasn't very happy about that.
Hope that helps!

I bolded the key phrase here: buy the 10.

Boot manger says on there website they recommend a class 6 or better. So I'm thinking the better the card the better the performance. I'm running a samsung class 10 sd and I get 9.8 mbps read speed & 42+ mbps write speeds and IMO its more than worth the investment and the warranty for the card. Just under 70 bucks @ frys. Its definitely a substantial boost in performance from the class 6 16gb I had in my Evo3d before. Patriot from what I was reading was giving to many hit & miss user comments on new egg and Amazon so its like a 50/50 chance. Pny also. Sandisk I would recommended good name brand also Samsung. Imo just read the users feedback on whatever card you choose to get a general idea of how the card is. Also I'd definitely recommend class 10 after having one.

Thanks, I appreciate your input.
If you haven't ran Bootmanager, you may not understand fully. BootManager is the equivalent of dual booting OS on a PC.... it actually has 5 slots for you to install different roms simultaneously.. 1 for the main phone rom (just like normal) then 4 additional slots that can be booted and run from the SD card. Even on a class4 card, I have had a great experience running roms from the SD. So good, as a matter of fact, that I cant tell the difference between the rom installed to the phone and the rom installed to the SD... I am currently setup with MIUI as my actual phone rom, Senseless in an SD slot, and planning on installing CM7 on another.

So you have noticeable differences between class6 and class10? I mean, i know that they will test differently, but do you really see/feel the difference when browsing/writing files to the SD?

Interesting, I've been wondering how bootmanager is setup and operates. I would imagine one of the reasons you don't notice much "lag" between the difference of using a ROM off internal memory or sdcard could be the amount of RAM on the device. EVO 3D has a good amount of RAM for the time frame/development cycle it was released in.
Android attempts to load up a lot into RAM in the hopes that at some point in the future, the application will be used again and switching will be smooth/easy. The more RAM in the device, probably the less "lag" to be noticed.
Going off this thought, the boot time might be the place to notice the most difference between internal memory and sdcard located ROMs. Either way, getting the faster sdcard, especially when relying on Bootmanager, should have a better impact/performance result.
If you weren't reliant on using Bootmanager, I wouldn't suggest getting the more expensive/quicker sdcard, but since you are, I think Bootmanager users would be the best candidate for a quicker sdcard.
If you do get the faster sdcard and wanted to go the extra mile. Posting up boot times for the same ROMs using the different speed sdcards would be very interesting! Perhaps Bootmanager has some kind of marketing material showing this already, but an independent user's personal results would be interesting!
Hope that helps too!

Yes a huge difference with the class 10. The class 6 16gb I had doesn't even compare when it comes to reading from the sd and writing to the sd. You should notice a great speed increase. Just load up an app like antu bench mark and run a custom test on the sd you have now and save the results. Then when you get the class 10 do the same. You will definitely see the difference. Also the app is free on the market.

Questions about microSD cards

So I know that many of these questions could be answered through some googling, but in general I trust the people here more than on other sites. I recently bought a G1 and rooted it and put on the latest stable cyanogen mod, etc. just to make sure I could do it, but now I want to invest in a bigger/better sd card than the 1GB it ships with so...
What are the advantages to getting a class 6 card? Are there any roms that won't run right without it?
Is there any reason to get a 16GB card as opposed to an 8GB? (or a 4GB for that matter)
(I know this one is very much a matter of opinion) What's your preferred brand?
Thanks for any answers to any of the questions!

the advantages of gettig a class 6 is SPEED
roms will run without a class 6, but to enjoy full speed, youd need a class 6.
welll i think 16gb is too much. 8gb is jsut fine. they are about 20 bucks or less on amazon. 4bg are like 10.
and a prefered brand is sandisk ofcoarse, or transcend.
thanks! i'll look around on amazon
I was just using the stock class 2 2gb that came with the phone, but I figured i'd try a class 6, managed to get a 4gb transcend from amazon for like, £6 including shipping, and the difference it makes is HUGE especially if you are thinking of taking any of the hero roms for a spin
Well worth getting imo. As for what size to get, it really depends on what you want on there, I found 4gb to be perfect for what I needed.

I think class 6 is a must. Many of the latest ROMs are maximizing the G1's potential and I wouldn't want to do anything that hold that back.
As for size, it's purely personal. I shelled out the big bucks for a 16GB because I have a ton of music on my phone. If not for that I'd go with an 8GB since a class 6 Transcend is only ~$20 which isn't a great deal more than the 4GB. With the 8GB you can ensure that you will not run out of space when you need it.

[Q] HD2 microSD card

Taking delivery of my phone soon.
What's the latest on microSD cards?
Are 32GB worth it? Do they work?
Any particular minimum Class I should get, even if I have to get 16GB?
Thanks

am using class 6 works fine.
I use an 8Gb, class 4 without any issues. Resco is installed on the card.
Although if your going to flash a ROM from a micro SD card use one < 8Gb.
Thanks,
Al
From my experience, it's not the class or size that matters. It's the make. (Obviously a smaller card with a higher class will have faster r/w speeds, but that's not usually a noticeable issue.)
I never buy any SD cards now that are not SanDisk, and I can't remember the last time I had one that didn't work.
Some brands seem to get a lot of complaints.
The class wouldn't really matter if you're just using it to store data/apps.
I use a Nokia N900 and run Android off the SD card. A higher class gives a better speed when running an O/S off of one. But using one to store data/apps wouldn't give a noticable advantage of one class than another.
Obviously the size does matter but depends on what you'll use it for.
Plus for flashing use < 8Gb.
Thanks,
Al
PS. I agree with the brands. I don't buy cheap non-branded ones. Although I've never had an issue with any of the 'cheap' ones.
The size of the card depends on your needs. If you cram a lot of stuff in there or apps, then aim for 16gb or 32gb.
You can find 32gb on amazon from $70 up (sandisk, kingston, dane elec -- those are deem legit 32gb cards) and most of them should give real class 4 performance (even when they're listed as class 2 like sandisk).
For me I like San Disk, but I want to test Toshiba 16GB Class4.The seller told me that Toshiba quality is good also and I decided to buy it.
Never had any problem with file transfer and running android on SD card.
I've used it 4 months now.So far so good.
I use a kingston 8gb class 4.. Never had any issues with performance
Thanks for all the replies guys.
I'll probably run Android off the card initially with the standard WM 6.5 tweaked. Maybe put some SatNav on there too.
As for Apps depends what I come across. For WM I have an old large build of offline Wikipedia and some dictionaries etc.
Ta
I had my 8GB SanDisk in my G1 for 2 years, then my HD2 for about 8 months, then randomly one day it stopped working.
If I plugged it in, all of my content appeared on the phone such as pictures. Then after about 30 seconds it would freeze, and then the phone would say no SD card is inserted. I managed to copy all of my pictures across on the PC luckily before it froze.
Granted it was old - but they do fail after a while.

*IF* boot from sd becomes an option

is sandisk class 4 going to be recommended again?
On the Nook Color I've read the sandisk are usually the most stable and the class 4 was the most idea (even over higher classes.)
I was wondering if this is still the case before I spent 20$ on a 16 gig sd card.
Without a doubt. It has to do with sandisk class 2 and 4 cards providing random access to small amounts of data at speeds that are 10-100 times any other brand.
All the other brands are trying to make really big chunks of data write faster (think copying over movies faster) so I don't see anyone competing with sandisk here.
you didn't specifically mention what you were going to do. if in theory you plan on running cm7 on a sd card, then go with sandisk class 4. If you are only using it for storage and plan to run cm7 off of internal you can get a higher class rating for higher transfer feeds of large movies etc. unless you plan on running applications off of sd card where I think you would want the sandisk.

I'd suggest class 10 honestly ...
I have a Kingston class 10 16gb and a SanDisk class 4 32gb and the class 4 SanDisk trumps the Kingston everytime, except during transfers directly from a computer. The SanDisk benchmarks much better also

I saw 10 card in another thread (since deleted?) where someone posted about a sale on a 32GB class 10 card. Without researching the card I happily posted to the thread saying that class 10 sounded like a good idea as I like to write gigs and gigs of data (MP3s, videos) to the card for consumption. I didn't stop to think about random reads or writes nor did I consider other uses.
This same kind of info was then posted there. I removed my foot from my mouth and noticed that, yes, in most cases, normal people doing normal things (i.e. running apps, writing small files, etc.) will generally be more happy using a class 2, 4, or *maybe* 6 in their tablet. Save the class 10 for the high-def video camera that needs fast, sequential writes. Save the dough when getting a card for your tablet: do some research and pick the card best for you based off REAL-WORLD BENCHMARKS. (Save you some time - you generally will do just fine picking up a SandDisk card.)

Effects of SD Card Upgrade

Just thought I'd report this as I've not come across any information on the subject.
This past week I replaced the stock 8GB (class 3 I think) SD Card that came preinstalled in my X2 with a 16GB class 10 SD Card. I have made no other changes or modifications. I'm running CM7 and had around 3GB's free on the 8GB Card.
I immediately noted that the couple of graphics intensive games i play (ShadowGun & Modern Combat 3) loaded nearly twice as fast and where the audio would skip at times before with a few lags here and there it doesn't now. Overall the game play is much smoother with no lags at all.
My benchmark scores in Quadrent have gone from averaging around 2850 to averaging around 3200. Smartbench 2012 has shown a consistent increase as well all but far less. Overall the phone seriously seems snapper, smoother.
And lastly i would like to say that the graphics appear to me to be rendering better particularly as regards curved lines...and yes I know this is a very unscientific observation on my part.
In closing i know most of us spend a great deal of time tweaking and testing different mods trying to squeeze even a few percentage points of extra performance out of our phones. Well here seems to be a way to get an extra 10-15% or so by simply upgrading the SD Card.
Oh...the card I got is made by Team Group, Inc purchased from Newegg for under 20 bucks, free shipping.

I upgraded to 32gb class10 myself. Was warned that it was not supported and would give me errors. So far the only problems I have had are.
1 when using with card reader make sure it is sdhc compatible our else it will corrupt card when it can't read it.
2 when I was on CM7 using USB it gave me some errors but not sure if that was the card or CM7.
So basically when I back it up I just shut my phone off and back it up using a sdhc compatible reader.

The original SD card was class 4. Just so you know.
I too noticed a major speedup when replacing the stock 8GB Class 4 card with a 32GB Class 10 Card from Lexar. I have had no issues with the card at all except that CM7 seemed to swap the cards but did not setup the sdcard-ext properly. I have run no benchmarks but in day to day use it was an improvement. Then installing CM7 made it even better.

I've always understood the x2 can support a 32GB SD card. I went with a 16GB purely for financial reasons. I put the information up regarding the performance increase of my phone simply because in all my searching the Android forums for tips to get the most out of my x2, upgrading the SD card was never mentioned. I really am blown away at the effect simply upgrading the SD card has had.

I have heard it's not the 32GB it's the class 10 that's not supported. I have not had any issues myself either except when hooking to PC but one was my USB card reader was not sdhc compatible, the other was CM7 using USB cable to transfer but have had problems with stock card also so think it's more of CM7 thing their. As far as only using it for phone have had no issues.

16gb NT SD dual boot w/CM7 - Just me or really unstable?

Brand new 16gb NT. Dual booting CM7 from the SD card, which is a brand new PNY 16gb Class 10. NookOS still on the internal. It just seems unstable-y to me.
First of all I have the wifi issue which seems to be common. It drops the signal quite a bit even when I have a seemingly strong commection and also doesn't always want to turn right on after sleep. I'm willing to chalk some of that up to my router, especially the dropping, but I thought I'd mention it for posterity.
I also get lots of reboots. It seems to happen most when I have a few things running. Have the gall to install an app while having Gmail open, then the audacity to open Gtalk on top of that? Boom! Reboot. You get the idea.
It's also just sluggish in general, be it with web browsing, games, music, etc. Netflix makes me feel like I'm running it on a Pentium II. And Yahoo mail arguably doesn't work it's so slow. Lots of system notifications and "force closeds."
I've also had the issue where I couldn't get it to boot CM at all. It would get to the splash screen then freeze and reboot. More than once I had to reformat the card and start over.
Surely this isn't what I should be experiencing. Will it help to root it and install to the internal? I wanted to keep NookOS on there in case I want to sell it and upgrade.
Any thoughts?
I started with the PNY and found the same thing. I switched to an 8 GB Sandisk Class 4 and could not believe the difference. It has to do with the small block write speed and the PNY is SLOW.
There is a lot of material in the forum about what brand and speed of micro sd to use. If you are curious you can search.
I have a 32 GB Sandisk Class 4 on order and intend to transfer to it when it comes and I find out how.
Bill
Its likely because you are using a higher class sd card. Drop down to a class 4 and you'll see an improvement.

So is it the class 10 cards altogether, or just PNY?
I would say class 10 in general is a bad idea. Its a misconception that higher class = better, in general. They are better for camcorders/digital audio recorders, but that's about it. In general you should stick to class 4 cards.
I can't speak on that brand personally. I only use SanDisk cards.
Amazon has the 32 GB Sandisk Class 4 for less than $16. You can get 8 gb for less than $8. Go for the bigger one if it fits your pocketbook.
Bill
Ok, so I have to get a new card. Maybe I can unload this one on Craigslist.
What about just rooting it and installing to the internal? The only thing is now I guess the NookOS is bricked as I cant get back into it. Can I unbrick with a class 10? The thread said to use a class 4.
If you want to run internal cm7, simply create a clockworkmod bootable sdcard (same process you did for cm7 on sdcard, but with the cwm image). Then download the cm7 zip file to the sdcard or your internal memory, boot into clockworkmod via the sdcard and install from zip. Download and install gapps in clockworkmod as well if you want the play store/google apps.
A quick question off topic...I went to get a copy of the internal CM7 and the link in the development forum isn't working...any idea where I can find a working link?
Thanks,
Nikkie
