I just gave up my EVO which I was a pro at rooting. I am totally lost with the GS2. Is there something similar to unrevoked.com ? Who are the more popular GS2 developers? I was a Fan of Virus Roms, MikG, and Energy Roms. Thanks in advance for your help.

Rooting the SGS2 is really easy, all you need todo is flash a kernel.
Recovery and the kernel are fused together, whenever you flash a kernel you are flashing recovery, so to get CWM you need a kernel with CWM.
No such thing as S-off (unlocked bootloaders woo!)
A good guide to everything, clickme
The modem is almost unbrickable (people have recovered form flashing a i9000 modem by just flashing a new modem)
You never need to put a .pit into odin or repartition.
The current ICS leaks are unstable and not really daily drivers.
Stock roms download links plus howto
Carrier branded firmware
Easiest way to root
As far as popular roms, poke around the original android section, pretty much all the roms in there are good.
My personal favs are in my sig

So if I want to set up my phone like yours with the Hyperdroid...... is there an easy way to do it? I managed to root the phone, as I now have superuser on it. Not sure what I need, or dont need. I really would like the battery to display % like my evo did instead of the green battery.
Thanks again for helping a newbe out. Im sure I will love this phone..... Allready got 14MBPS download on 4g WOW
one more Thing, I have the Tmobile GS2. Will the hyperdroid work with this????
If I have a,rooted GS2, should I not upgrade software that Tmobile pushes to the phone?

T Mobile USA SGS2 or Tmobile UK or other country? From your sig it seems you have the USA one.
If its the USA version, you are in the wrong forum. You need to go here

Hey all,
For those of you unaware, droidxcon over on android central ( thanks for the heads up ) has been making full Odin files of Adyrn's Superclean ROMS.
Seems like he updates with each new base version too.
I've used these to get my phone working more than once now, so I thought I would share

Does anybody know if there are any files like this for DL09? I heard that the radio got better reception, and gps seemed to work fairly well (and battery was SO much better!)

There is a stock ODIN file for DL09 that is still available, but I don't think anyone did ODIN files for the custom ROMs.
Custom kernels are where it's at for battery life. I just can't bring myself to go back to Eclair for longer than a couple hours at a time.

You can flash these then immediately boot into recovery and flash the voodoo kernel. It only adds an additional minute or two to the whole installation process.
I recommend the EC10 voodoo kernel.

I prefer these Odin files. I had difficulties getting CWM to work.
Could someone please point me to a thread, or a tutorial about packaging these? I would like to be able to do that in case I use a ROM that doesn't yet have Odin files in the future.
I apologize for going off topic. I do think that folks reading this might have a similar interest though. My Google-fu was not strong enough to find the answer myself.

in general just reading the op of the rom you are downloading will tell you everything you need to know.
as to your gps woes it will be a while until the vibrant has functioning gps on CM7 (waiting on a gingerbread leak and source code as i understand it) so my suggestion to you would be to get an external bluetooth gps receiver like the ones discussed in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15466429#post15466429
I personally have the one mentioned in the op and i can tell you that it works 500% better than the stock gps on the vibrant ever did (either on eclair or froyo)

the reason that it seemed like the sky fell on you was, first you asked a question that has been asked in the thread that it should be asked in, oh about every 5 posts since cm7 for the vibrant was released.
But what really took it over the top, was you felt the need to make a separate thread about it, and even went so far as to say that cm7 broke your gps. had you read probably 3 of the last pages in the cm7 thread before posting this, you would have known you answer, and probably had you opened the vibrant dev section and viewed threads there, you'd have seen the public service announcement thread about gps not working.
I know some of the responses are inappropriate, but it's more about you felt entitled enough to make a dedicated thread about it rather than using the tools available to you in the first place to find your answer.

Noted, I do plan on flashing another rom, but I am a little scared. I am reading CM7 is different from most roms and I would have to flash a new kernel and rom and etc to have it, but im still a little confused on how to do it
While I am also shocked you missed this... to answer your question, you may prefer a rom like Trigger 3.2. Its rock stable, has gps, and is themed well. it is not GB.
If you HAVE to have GB, try Asgard.

i'm not going to explain howto here, as the post right abvove mine has a link to a how to, you'll need to odin back to jfd before flashing any other rom besides miui.
basically all Froyo/Eclair Roms Have working GPS. The Big Name JVP Roms have working GPS. CM7/Miui and any variants of them do NOT have working GPS.
so just goto the development section and look at any 2.3.4 Roms NOT cm7/Miui and read the features and/or Changlog for full information. SGSII clone/hybrid and Simply Honey are excellent choices both based off JVP and have "working" gps. just make sure you read the op to understand how gps functions with those roms.
Good Luck.
just make sure you ODIN back to JFD stock before flashing anything else or you'll experience bootloops and thats annoying imo.
****** Stay away from Bootloaders if your new to all this as you can Permanently paperweight your phone if you flash a new rom hastily without reading and removing certain load files in the rom. *******
Well thanks guys I will look into it, If I go back to stock does that mean it will be unrooted? or just rooted but stock everything else?

GB = Gingerbread
Android Releases
Stock Vibrant 2.1 (Eclair
Froyo 2.2+
Gingerbread 2.3+
you should have a modified update.zip from rooting originally you can use that to reroot your phone and begin flashing again
Odin back to stock
3 button to recovery
update packages until you reach clockwork recovery menu then flash new rom its that easy.
if you want full functionality stay away from CM7/Miui for the time being.

Odin3 (i have V1.81)
512.pit
T959UVJFD.tar
that will get you to stock.
then from there follow the 3 button method i posted above to reroot.
and to answer your question yes the guides will work fine. and again i can't stress this enough stay away from Bootloaders, as your knowledge and research about flashing seems lacking atm you can perma break your vibrant (not meaning this offensively)

You do not need to root to install Miui.
There are reasons to root a stock rom, but there seems to be a general misconception on why you root, and when to root.

This!!! I missed the miui part....yea no need to root if your flashing a custom rom!!!
I think a lot of people are used to other phones like HTC and Motorola where you have to be rooted to flash roms. I thought it was weird too when I first got the fascinate coming from those other brands. I like that Samsung leaves the security essentially wide open on their devices.
Yeah I have a evo 3d running miui and my buddy wants it. What's the way you guys recommend

If he still wants to root, SuperOneClick is the easiest. Just make sure usb debugging is on.
Just Odin cwm4 fixed for cm7. Then flash miui in cwm. Su is preinstalled on miui.

I'm going to root my friends GSII and have a few questions. I'm experienced with rooting since I've been flashing roms/kernels since my old Evo 4G and my current Evo 3D, but I am unfamiliar with Samsung phones. I've read the stickies but still was unsure about a few things.
What exactly is odin and what does it do? You can flash a rom/kernel normally through recovery right?
And last one, what is a modem? Is that like a firmware package that we have for HTC phones?
If you're going to do this you have to read around. Google will help you out big time
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
I have read around...I read everything for the rooting process as well. After everything I read, I have only those two simple questions. Is it really that much of a pain in the ass to just answer them? Whatever happened to a helpful XDA community?
I'm only saying this so you know how to do some troubleshooting if something goes wrong. If you Google "samsung modem vs HTC radio"or something it Will yield results. Also searching for Odin on wikipedia I know will yield results. This is xda, a developer site. You're supposed to search before posting whether it be Google or here because chances are people have asked the question before

For rooting or obtaining root access, I believe there are 4 options, all listed on the FAQ. It's your choice. For simplicity, I chose the first option.
Modem? Like radio, quality of call (?), quality of data (?)
Don't have enough technical knowledge to clearly explain to you, m8
To rest your case, rooting is easy.

Odin is a proprietary software made by Samsung that runs on the Windows platform and is used to transfer firmware onto a samsung phone. You can flash firmware through ClockworkMod Recovery, which is built into the kernel portion of the firmware, but you cannot flash firmware from a stock kernel, you must first install a custom kernel which has CWM Recovery built in.

I'm not familiar with htc phones. Modem is like a radio on other phones. It is a separate piece of firmware that can be flashed separately, or along with other parts of the firmware, which handles the cell network interface, wifi and some other things.

My i777 is coming in the mail tomorrow. I'm very excited, its my first Android. I've been researching custom firmware and stuff like that for about a month around the web. I just have no idea where to start. I believe my phone still has some form of 2.3 on it, but it could be the current 4.0.4 ICS.
From what I understand, I update the drivers on my computer with Kies, download Odin to root the device and then what? Or superoneclick? I'm interested in CM10 but I know the bugs are still being worked out. I need my camera, MMS, bluetooth, 3g data, at&t radios, mhl, Touchwiz toggles, all the functionality with no soft keys at the bottom. JB would be great if its possible. Other wise I might as well just update the phone to stock ICS and root it for other stuff I want like sixaxis and over/underclocking apps.
There is a reason we have stickies

There's things like KK 2.3.6, is that custom GB firmware? I know there is lots of information but no where to start.
pretty sure it would make more sense once you actually have the device in hand....seems pointless to create a new thread asking how to get started when you dont even have the device yet.
use it for at least a day or 2 before you start messing with custom ANYTHING
hell, dont even root it right away. just use it as is to get a feel for it, and verify there is nothing wrong with the hardware....if you just jump in and flash custom firmware, how will you ever know if an issue was hardware or firmware related?
Interesting, good point Pirateghost. I was wanting to put custom stuff on there while I had access to a computer this weekend. Might as well wait though. I'll have a laptop to mess with everything at my own pace by Black Friday anyway.
If it is still running GB, should I upgrade it to ICS, or would that hinder the root process when I want to do that?

The second part of your reply is absolutely spot on.
The first part i dont agree with a 100%.
I too plan to purchase the i777 model in the not too distant future, and its always a good thing to start reading early. Just like getting a feel of the stock rom/hardware is essential.. its always a good thing to read up well in advance. By the time a person is analyzing the h/w.. he is in a position to relate with other user's experiences.
I too was reading up all the stickies and really did got stuck up with the KK6 2.3.6 thing mentioned right at the start and no clue/legend being mentioned as to what it was. I googled a lot and many results had the same thing.. simply started using the terms w.o any hints.
It does gets confusing tbh you know
The thing is, I understand and know the stock hardware and firmware very well already. I have been using my girlfriend's GS2 from Sprint, the "Epic 4g Touch" since she got it in May. I've used it with GB and then ICS in August (I had to tell her to stop ignoring the notification, the update was a good thing!), but it will be good to evaluate the item to fully determine that everything is good with it.
It seems like in your first post, you steered yourself away from CM10, but everything you listed works except mhl I believe. And if you really want that, you will be able to dualboot into shostock once Siyah kernel gets updated.
