[Q]Battery Life - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone. I want to know if my battery performance is normal....
How long should my battery last?
Mine can easily drop down from 100% to 95% with 30 minutes of browsing via wi-fi... Is this normal?
Other question.... If I'm NOT using a sim card, will the 3g drain my battery?
Thx in advance
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

I, too, was curious about battery expectations.
Based on your numbers:
5% = 30 minutes of use
That would estimate around 600 minutes of doing just browsing over wifi
If I could get 10 hours from doing that, I think I`d be pretty satisified.

For the first question, the battery life is normal.
As to the second, your battery life cannot be drained because there's no sim card in the device receiving UMTS signals.

i was actually thinking about the second question too..
i have the 4g version version but i only use the wifi with no sim card
in my battery use it shows "cell standby" as 17% percent
even wifi is less at 8%
EDIT: i just found out, you can do "flight mode" and then still turn on wifi. i think that will get rid of cell standby use for good. will check back after some testing.

Flying mode is supposed to turn off all wireless broadcast, 3g or wifi in order not to interfere with flying instruments while in a plane.
So i dont think it would be possible to enter flight mode and then turn on wifi without disabling flying mode.
There would be no point to that would it?

i know what you are saying and that's what i thought too, until i tried it..
so i selected flight mode and it turned everything off but then allow me to turn wifi back on but with flight mode still selected.
now when i go into battery use, the "cell standby" does not show up anymore..
oh sammy weird..

You can use flight mode and then turn on something.
For exemple, sometime I want to turn off Internet (wifi/4g), but after this I can just turn on bluetooth with flight mode still activated.

the thing is, i got my 10.1 for discount from rogers for 250 and they gave me a 4g version but i just wanted a wifi...
so i don't have a sim card inside and it won't even let me go into the mobile data settings. i would think that if it didn't have sim card in, it wouldn't be on. however, when i checked the battery usage, there is was... "cell standby"
anyways, yea, i figured yesterday that i can turn on flight mode and then turn on wifi, and the cell standby was gone.

Weird, but as you say true.
I will check it as soon as i go home
The same does not apply for my IPhone.
I was unable to turn wifi on (or BT), after i went into flight mode.

yea, i mean.. that's how it is originally with every other device i've had.. but :S i dunno
98% battery at 5 hours off charge with light use to far. noticeably better than before.

5 hours of charge via AC I asume, right?

oh i meant i unplugged it from the AC 5 hours ago. think there was some mis-communication there.
yea, yesterday the battery would drain faster, certainly a difference.

[Q] Battery Life

Hi Everyone,
I am disappointed with the battery of Optimus One.
My Battery in Standby (GPS/Wi-fi/3g/Sync/Screen, ALL OFF and without USE ), does not last even 20 hours.
I have an application that shows what application is consuming more battery power and the "phone in standby mode" takes up 95%!
What are your experiences with this battery?
Mine has problems?
Thx
I bought it one week ago and the battery last one day with no problem (and it's not at its full "potential" since is new). When did you buy the phone?
I bought it 2 weeks ago
Using a custom rom you won't be disappointed with your battery no more...
I have openOptimus Rom with Franco kernel 15. I am at 85% battery after 14 hours. The phone has been pretty much idle.
Only 2G networks
Data disabled
Wi-fi on
Auto-sync on
Overclocked 480/729 interactive (interactive may not be optimal)
I'm using franco kernel v15.1 with devoid.franco, i'll try do update do devoid.froyo.final today.

Hi, what is data disabled? and how to put only 2g networks?
20 hours on idling? Send it back for repair/replace. Mine will last days if left idling (about 1% every two hours)
When I travel I turn all data connections off (Bluetooth, wifi, gps, data) and it lasts about 3days

Here are some potential things to turn off that might make the battery last longer. They are all in the settings app. I do not do all these since I find that some things might make the battery last longer but reduce the usefulness of the phone.
Setting/Display/Brightness
Setting/wireless & networks/wi-fi off
Setting/wireless & networks/bluetooth off*
Setting/wireless & networks/mobile networks/use only 2G networks*
Setting/wireless & networks/mobile networks/data enabled off* (I have this turned off all the time as I do not have a data plan.)
The items * I have off unless I am actively using them. I also overclock my Optimus. I think that this probably gives me a longer battery life, since it is running at 480 when I am not using it. I suppose if I was desperate, I would undercloack the phone (min 480 and max 480).
What version of Android are you running? 2.2 or 2.2.1/2.2.2?
When you click on Cell Standby, how much Time Without Signal does it show?
follow these steps and i think ull have what you want..
go to battery use and click on cell standby : then see time without signal. how much does it show ? if its above even one percent (unless uve mannually put ur device in airplane mode) i know the problem.
go to settings >wireless & network settings > mobile network > mark 2G only (if u are not using 3G) cause the cell might spen loads of battery searching for 3G.. then go to network operators and search for (mannually) and select ur own network provider.. like mine is airtel.. then let your battery run down totally.. completly to zero. then recharge your phone to full without any break.. this is called recaliberation. then see how much your battery lasts..
remember to turn off bletooth, wifi, internet, all ! while the phone is idle and you wont be using it for sometime. or, if you wont be doing or getting any calls or sms, consider switching to airplane mode..
you might be getting less battery if ur in a area with weak signal strength.. this makes the phone go wilder to search for signal. in these conditions, switch to airplane mode if you can . thatll save a lot of battery. and also during night if you want to.
dont hesitate to click the thanx if i helped !
EDIT: and ya every thing that the person after me 'Y.u.v.i' said.. though those are normal things and brightness level is most important..
and about francos kernel, ive had many f/c s with mik's cm7 beta 6.2.5 ..i prefer its own kernel , though dunno for other roms.. u might wanna try it.. ill try myself too..
yes ..few step here u can try
1.reduce ur brightness level to minimum ...
2. use 2g signal only.
3. turn off all extra connection like wi-fi , Bluetooth, auto sync , data.
4. use advance task killer and set it to auto kill app aftr every 30 mints.
5.automatic screen time to 30 sec.
6.if u r using custom ROM use Franco 15.1 kernal . and wipe battery after charging it up-to 100%
use thanks if u like my post ...
I did all the tips posted here. Let us now see what happens

I'm using 2.2
7% without signal.
Sorry for the dumb question (about 2.2 or 2.2.x) - I didn't read the first page carefully enough.
Try this: reboot, then enable airplane mode, lock your screen and leave it like that for about a minute, unlock screen, disable airplane mode.
Are you still seeing Time Without Signal? (of course, after a few hours, not straight away)
EDIT:
DON'T do any of the following:
- reduce brightness to 1%... come on, be serious! you really like squinting at the screen? screen brightness doesn't affect battery life that much anyway...
- don't use task killers! it doesn't matter if you have little RAM - it's there to be used. I will not go into details about this (there's whole threads about it), but trust me!
You could also try monitoring your apps with https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite&feature=search_result and see if any of them start behaving wildly and keep your CPU awake.
Another thing would be to try Nessy Hypnos2... I had great battery life when using that ROM! If you're still experiencing the same battery drain with a fresh install of Hypnos, then I'm sorry to tell you but you'll probably have to send your phone for repairs.
I ended up recharging the phone two hours ago and it is at 91%.
Was 9% in 2 Hours - 4,5% per Hour. Very Bad...
...with nothing in use.
Only 2g networks
wi-fi/dates/sync/bluetooth ( ALL OFF )
Screen OFF (black, with -0% of brigth, because he is OFF)
I install Battery Monitor Widget that estimates my uses of battery in:
18h52m of Discharge (100->0%)
and 5h of charg in USB and 3h of charge inc AC.
I'm installing watchdog now, to see if have an App draining battery.
EDIT:
But I do not think that's because I have an application that shows the the CPU clock in%.
480MHz = 80%
729Mh = 20% or less
and another that shows the applications that consume battery
and Cell Standby = 90%

I've yet to have a normal day since I can't put it down for long, except I did leave it alone yesterday for 12 hours with gps, bt and wifi on (wifi connected, bt not connected) and only lost 12% battery. I then picked it up and spent most of 4 hours messing with it and browsing the internet on wifi and lost another 40%.
yeah wifi on makes the battery last a lot longer. i can't connect to wifi at work cause our system blocks gmail and my phone won't syn and it keeps trying and really starts sucking the battery down.
I can't kill this thing. I don't have 4g here, but wow, I use my phone allot, and it goes all day every day!

[Q] Battery drain and signal problem (SK17i)

Hello!
I've got my Xperia Mini Pro more than a month ago and have been experiencing some issues with the battery life and with the reception.
Besides the Xperia I also have a Nokia N82, both phones have a sim card from the same operator and both are set up to use only 3G and manual operator selection; putting both phones on the desk, the N82 gives me almost full strenght signal while the SK17i shows me no bars, if I pick up the SK17i it looses connection and I have to walk around the room like a dowser looking for signal. Moreover, once I found the perfect spot which gives me 2 bars, I have to hold the phone with two fingers because holding it with my hand makes it loose connection.
On top of this there is the battery drain problem: if I leave the SK17i in the perfect spot on the desk with the data connection on, the battery lasts max 3 hours (some times less than 2 hrs) with a full charge.
Also when I put it in my pocket leaving data on and I walk around the office, after a while the phone gets quite hot and to make it cool down I have to turn off data.
All this happens when I'm at work, when I go back home in the weekend the phone lasts a whole day having data connection and/or wifi turned on all time, also it doesn't get so hot.
My guess here is that in low signal areas there is a software component that litterally sucks the battery. Has anyone experienced this? And has anyone noted how the reception of this phone sucks?
Any idea of an app that can let me locate the battery-sucking piece of software?
PS: the phone is not rooted and has original FW and the latest apps updates that came out since it was bought. I've also immediately deleted McAfee crap and other bundled bloatware
I have the phone since Friday and also got bad reception problems.
It varies badly also without moving the phone. I can confirm that I lose all signal bars when holding the phone in my hand.
Can't say much about the data reception because it's the first time I have a data plan.

Hi!
Since it'a a while that you've got the phone, have you been able to notice how long does the battery last? Does it last longer if you're in an area with good signal?
Thank you
Honestly I can't really tell unfortunately.
At home I have bad reception and at work mostly none
But I think that changing the Network Type to GSM auto (PRL) helped a bit with battery drainage and also reception.
You get to the settings with *#*#4636#*#*
Thanks for the hint, I'll try it and I'll let you know although I don't think it will work in my case since I have the 3 operator which works only in 3G/WCDMA and not in GSM.
BTW, what is that *#*#4636#*#* code? Do you know other codes like this?
Thanks
You can input the code through the dialer and a hidden menu appears.
I just googled for other similar codes and found this site:
http://www.askvg.com/google-android-hidden-secret-codes/
You could also try the app Elixir 2. That's how got to the hidden menu in first place.
I did try the GSM (PCL) setting as you suggested but nothing has changed even after the 2.3.4 update, in low signal areas the battery just lasts a couple of hours if data is on, 5 hrs if data is off; at home I kept it with wifi on for a whole day and in the evening I still had about 20% battery left so it's the search for signal that drains the battery.
The last test I'm going to make is to change operator and see if in gsm mode works better.
Thanks for the answers
You can also try set Search mode to manual instead of Automatic in Mobile Network settings.

It's the first thing I did: disable roaming and set search mode to manual, although I noticed that the phone connects to other networks anyway but allowing only emergency calls.
Searching for a network is definitely a huuuge drain on battery, combine that with people's mysterious loss-of-signal issues and bam, battery drain.
It is confirmed here too that my signal is weak. My phone is SK17i
I live in a marginal signal area - and lose the signal fairly regularly.
Check the battery stats in the "About Phone" sub menu in settings. Unless those figures are cooked-up - there's very little drain from anything other than the display on my phone - and I have had wifi and data+GPS turned on most of the day.
In fact, I lose the signal even when charging or on a fully charged battery.
As an observation - the loss of signal seems to occur during or immediately after using certain apps like the maps - ones which make use of GPS or background data.
Just a tip.
Have any you confirmed if the same problem remains using another (perhaps newer) SIM card?
Because I know that sometimes problems like these can be caused by using older SIM cards.

Today I switched operator, went to one who has also 2G coverage and not only 3G like the previous one, I've had data, baground data and sync on, have been using the phone quite intensively and the battery is now at 59% after 4hrs.
With the previous operator it used to last only 2-4hrs.
Let's see what happens in the next days.
PS: In the past week I've tried disabling background data and the battery lasted almost 2 days, but to go online I used only wifi and not 3G. It seems background data is one of the highest battery drainers.
My Sk17i worst
My rooted sk17i even can't connected to the internet, the 3G signal is low, and the bigest problem that makes me annoyed is the battery can't charge into the maximum capacity. -_-
Each operator has there own share of bandwidth at different frequencies and drains battery differently
2g requires less battery
3 requires more battery
Auto- drains the most if your data is on also, your constantly searching for basetowers
Basebands can be changed to get optimum signal from your provider
3g will drain battery quicker than WiFi too
Newer 4g/lte is more efficient
66 baseband is good for me 3UK

Battery life! Check please guys!

Hi guys
I've been playing around with my galaxy s3 for several days and I'm very pleased.
But one thing is still very annoying as a previous iphone owner. That's the battery life.
I just attached a screenshot. For 9 hours 12% drains during sleeping thus basically screen has turned on for only few mins.
Is it normal??
Wanna hear you guys opinion.

Hello,
i don't think is normal here is my use over night.
It's without sync and wlan, with sync and wlan it takes 2-3%
If you turn off wifi, data and GPS and put the phone on energy saving mode (its on the top bar menu, just drop it down and you will see it) then after 8 hours the phone is almost 0% drain.

Thats correct. It seems like for most people its the cellular data that is killing the battery. If I turn off 3G data, I get good battery as well but with cellular data turned on, battery will not last a day.

I use "tasker" to switch on the sync only every 30min for 3min. Like this I have ~ 50-60% left in the evening.
Thank you guys!! I'll test it out today
I'm going to turn everything off such as wifi, sync..
I don't use 3g often though. I'm a pretty heavy user like 4-5 hours screen on and I get 14-15 hours battery life.
Anyway I'll see how it will affect on my battery.
Thanks!

you have something else going on i lose 2% overnight...try airplane mode see what happens
I think your charger may be broken lol. You charge it every night yet your phone is at 53% when you wake up? Anyway, assuming you sleep 8 hours and that your phone was at 100% that is less than 50% on 8 hours. You probably get 17 hours standby time, not the best but not the worst. Try airplane mode

think you are alone... Coming home with 80% left....
what says your battery settings? what stands by "battery in standby"? How much takes "android system", how many apps are listed in total? Do you have battery save mode on?=> Try to turn it off. Do you have auto brightness? Turn it off, set the display to 40-50% and make a widget on home with settings to 100% so you can read under heavy sun. You are outside the day?=> turn the wifi off....
Tell us more and post your results, the comment that your device is a bucket full of crap is bull**** because the S3 has one of the best battery and settings in smartphone business!...

I still suspect this may be router related though. When I had my crappy Netgear, I would get strange periods of battery drain on my SGS2 when WIFI was left on. That just about all disappeared once I upgraded to an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato, and now, I don't get any drain on my SGS3 as well when I leave WIFI (set to "Always On" under Advanced WIFI Settings) idling.

I too think it's router related. It can possibly be due to Wifi dual banding in some routers that support it. Faster internet with less battery life.
