I decided to do a "best case scenario" test, and see if some of my battery issues were from apps gone awry, or some other drain. I pulled my phone off the charger right after it went green, and let it sit on the table. Wifi is off, BT is on, and I'm using my airave, so the signal is a full 6 bars all the time. I have 3 email accounts configured. Two of them are direct push, and one is an IMAP poll once every 15 minutes. Few, if any, emails were received during this test. The breakdown is like this:
4hrs, 32mins on battery. Battery currently at 92%
Cell Standby: 33%
Phone Idle: 32%
Display: 23% (the display was only on for about 30 seconds of the entire test)
Bluetooth: 4%
Maps: 4%
Android OS: 4%
So at least i know there isn't a process running that is making my battery next to useless. My battery seems to be getting slightly better with each day of use, but I still can't wait for the extended battery/cover to be released. I really got used to that on my Evo.
Dave
that sounds a lot better than my setup.
I went from a full charge to 50% with very light usage in 8hrs . I've been asleep for over 7 hours.
Display: 29%
Cell Standby: 27%
Phone Idle: 26%
Android OS: 7%
Voice calls: 5%
Maps: 5%
However, I have horrible reception in my house, even next to the windows. All's fine as soon as i step out the door.
I've found that a weak signal has a dramatic affect on battery life with these phones. They do so much syncing in the background, and it takes so much longer with a weak signal (not to mention it has to transmit at a higher power). The signal makes all the difference.
Call sprint and get yourself an airave! They gave me mine for free.
Dave
do you guys have the display setting on auto or low brightness. My display usage is always through the roog. I am getting decent battery life. I turn 4g off usually and just use 3g unless I am gonna watch youtube videos or sometihng.
I unplugged the phone at 7:15 this morning and I have email, facebook all syncing. wifi off and I am at 92%. So far this phone is being very good at battery life, specially after the first few cycles.

I have mine set at a number. I use a program to change my brightness at night.
7.5hrs & 70% battery left!!
Is it better to have the brightness automatic or a number like 30 percent?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I just use auto brightness, I had about 11 hours use and 80% remaining taking a bunch of pictures, a little navigation and texting. This is with wifi on about half the time.
My battery was crap for the first three days with the phone, after calibrating the battery and giving it a few cycles its been really good for me. I do top off the battery usually before I pull it off the charger for the day.
I have mine set to auto and I see it changes even as I'm typing this message. Truth be told, the battery does drain when we don't have good signal...

Auto brightness us worse for your battery. This is because it has to use sensors every set time interval to check the lighting. It's not a TERRIBLE drain, but over the course of 4-5 hours it would probably save you 5-6% if you set it something lower .
And to the other person who asked, your battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY lowered when you have poor signal. What happens is your phone's radio draws extra power when it has poor reception in order to boost its range/signal. For those of you who work in places with poor signal, I bet you can attest to this
Also, I have a few battery tips in my signature if you're interested in more. It's slightly outdated (as in there are more methods now), but everything in the article is still true

Fully charge your phone, then use it until the battery complete drops...Then charge it again
How many cycles have people run on their batteries? IE full to dead?
I have auto brightness, GPS on Bluetooth on, email sync every 3 hours, weather sync evey 3 live wallpapers, and I forget the rest. Battery lasts me 12-24 hours, which is about what I got with my Hero modded out with setcpu and etc. I like the battery life of this phone.

My phone died in about 6-7 hours of steady drain, then I calibrated by doing the same thing they told us to do with the OG evo.
Charge over 8 hours, turn off the phone charge another hour, turn the phone on charge another hour.
I top off by using the phone for a couple minutes, then putting it back on the charger until full. The phone clearly goes down to 95% from full while charging and back up, I like how on this phone you can see that it does it on the battery graph so you know.
I've had my phone off the charger for like 34 hours and I'm at around 48 percent battery remaining. Not heavy usage but not super light either.

69% as of now. I had to reboot today so I can't say this is average. I know there are issues that can't be fixed until root, but as a stock ROM, it seems the power management isn't half bad.

Sense has always been pretty good about power management (especially when you consider the puny batteries they put in their phones), and an asymmetric dual core processor definitely doesn't hurt haha

I've yet to have a normal day since I can't put it down for long, except I did leave it alone yesterday for 12 hours with gps, bt and wifi on (wifi connected, bt not connected) and only lost 12% battery. I then picked it up and spent most of 4 hours messing with it and browsing the internet on wifi and lost another 40%.
yeah wifi on makes the battery last a lot longer. i can't connect to wifi at work cause our system blocks gmail and my phone won't syn and it keeps trying and really starts sucking the battery down.
I can't kill this thing. I don't have 4g here, but wow, I use my phone allot, and it goes all day every day!

Forgive me if this is common knowledge but I wanted to bring this to this forum because I didn't see it.
I did a complete wipe and upgraded to CM9 and noticed my battery life wasn't that great. Wasn't as horrible as it got on my CM7 -SGS1, but pretty bad. 9 hours a charge or so, which is enough to get through the day at least. On a tip I downloaded BetterBatteryStats(worth every penny) and started looking at my Wakelocks. I noticed AudioOut_1 was top of the list by an absurd margin. So I did some searching and came across a thread in the Nexus section(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389214&page=3 and then to https://github.com/asksven/BetterBatteryStats-Knowledge-Base/wiki/AudioOut_1 Thanks Syn Ack).
Turns out there's an apparent bug that even with the screen off, it being touched can trigger a wakelock on the sound. Sure enough I turned off the Touch Sounds and Screen Lock sounds and I'm now losing about 4% an hour of light usage, major improvement.
Again sorry if this makes me an asshat, I just wanted to spread it to people who might be having this issue with their fresh CM9 install.

Interesting, I'm getting that same process at number 1 but both of those are already disabled for me.

Turn off wifi and battery life is great (on standby). Previously I had wifi on, battery drain 4%-6% an hour, but with wifi off, it drains only 0.8% an hour (95% battery after 6 hours of standby, randomly checking). This is on 3/30 build.
edit: I left wifi on.. 8% battery life drained within 1 hour and 30 min..

This sounds like you have an app installed that treats wifi data usage differently than cell network data usage. Gonna guess that you had a lot of wlan-rx wakelocks over that period of high drain with wifi on...

I totally agree, with each phone I run a simply test. I'll get to that in a sec. On my last phone "captivate" wifi was actually better than data on standby, but not this phone "SGS2". With that being said: I charge 100% then left wifi on while I went to bed. Woke up with 70% over 8 hours of standby not impressed. Next night did same thing 100% but with data on instead. Woke up with 95%!! ....I personally have up in notification bar data toggle and wifi, I leave data off most of the day while I'm out. I turn it on when I want to check email or FB etc. best amount I've lasted was 1 day 16 hrs... With 26% battery left. Ik some Ppl won't want to do that but just a suggestion. Hope this helps anyone out.
SGS2 Running CM9 using XDA
I unplugged and after browsing, making two calls, a text, and finding some places on google I checked an hour later and bam, I had 97% left. I can live with 3% an hour drain with high usage. I also keep WI-FI and Bluetooth on and have it connected to my car. This definitely fixed my problem, hope it helps everyone else.
My setup is nothing but stock install of CM9(3-30), stock battery and everything.
Well after using it for a full day. (14 hours) I can honestly say that for me. This hasn't improved anything. It hasn't made anything worse either though. I'm sitting at 28% right now. Which is the same as I was getting prior to this change.

As this is not normal behavior, I'm going to suggest that you look for the app that is using your wifi. I leave my wifi on 24/7. Go to sleep with a full charge, wake up 7-8 hours later with only 3-4% gone.
What's probably the best way to go about doing so?

I think your charger may be broken lol. You charge it every night yet your phone is at 53% when you wake up? Anyway, assuming you sleep 8 hours and that your phone was at 100% that is less than 50% on 8 hours. You probably get 17 hours standby time, not the best but not the worst. Try airplane mode

I still suspect this may be router related though. When I had my crappy Netgear, I would get strange periods of battery drain on my SGS2 when WIFI was left on. That just about all disappeared once I upgraded to an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato, and now, I don't get any drain on my SGS3 as well when I leave WIFI (set to "Always On" under Advanced WIFI Settings) idling.

I too think it's router related. It can possibly be due to Wifi dual banding in some routers that support it. Faster internet with less battery life.
my quad core s3 is a no-contract phone . uses pre-paid card. so there is no 3g/4g. i get around 4 hours screen on time with power saving mode on with juice defender on. i find that gaming time in this phone is awful. in the iphone 4, i get 5 hours 3d gaming time. now i dont even get 4 hours 2d gaming time! is this normal with the s3? but stll this is a fantastic phone. without gaming i get 6 hours screen on time. just would like to know if you get the same with gaming. iphone 5 seems to have a really good battery with 8h screen on time.
Make sure you disable wcdma in network settings.... your phone probably searching for a 3g signal and failing.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Get rid of juice defender and turn off power save mode.
Also 8 hours screen on time for ip5 is questionable, these are the same people that said 8 hours 3g use and 10 hours LTE. As everyone knows, LTE uses more power than 3g.
Their numbers are lies/exaggerated.
If you want the iPhone so badly then you know what you need to do.

I too have Power Saving Mode turned on, and manually adjust the brightness (it's always set to the lowest setting).
I have WiFi turned on the entire time that I'm home, and 3G when I'm out.
Auto Sync is on the entire time, because I want to be able to know when I get an incoming email.
That's pretty much it.
I am not able to come close to 4 hours of screen time, before my battery reaches 5-10%. Cell Standby accounts for the most battery usage.
Any pointers/tips?
P.S. Phone not rooted.
Do you have Viber? If yes there is a bug in the latest update that's keeping the proximity sensor on and draining the battery. 4 hours screen on time with battery save mode is really bad. There's probably some app draining the battery.
Ps. Ip5 battery life is a lie as usual, people who have it and actually use it say battery is actually quite bad. Also on the ios stats you don't have 'screen on' time report, but 'usage' time that is a lot more stuff than just screen on time. People who say the have 8 hours are probably just reading the usage time.

Yep; I do use Viber. I think you're right. Ever since I got the latest Viber update, the battery seems to die off sooner.
Should I uninstall and check?
How can I check what rogue app is eating into the battery?
Well. i hate the iphone 5! no i dont have viber. juice defender shows me battery improved by 1.8x. i have auto sync off and power save on. i have disabled mobile data. and i realised i am just expecting too much! i was surfing the stock browser on wifi for 45 min and my phone went from 39% to 34%. guess thats okay.
Viber just fixed the proximity sensor issue; hope this resolves the battery drain issue.
BTW, what is the normal hourly battery drain percentage?
You can install an app called 'betterbatterystats' (very counterintuitive name!) to see what exactly is eating your battery, it takes a while to figure out how it works but it is very usefull!
Google location services in maps and Google now (if you are on jelly bean) drain quite a bit of battery and basically anything running on the background. Obviously you just deactivate what you don't need!
What about the iphone4 and SGS3 screen size ...every mm more=more power

Screen On time was a little under 4 hours.
I spent just a little over 2 hours on the phone.
Wifi was on/off intermittently.
Around 15 minutes of gaming.
The phone lasted 1 day and 20 hours.
That, in my opinion, is really, really good.

I get around 21-26 hours of standby time and screen on time ranging from at least 5 hours to 6.5 hours. When I don't browse much and just use the Adobe Reader I b get around 7 Hours plus a few minutes.
I switch on power saving mode when the battery drops below 30% and my brightness is set on auto and I'm connected to a 2g network. No gaming. I generally browse the Web for an hours , listen to music for a few minutes and then read on the Adobe Reader.
Auto sync is switched on at all times.
