had same problem, couldn't figure it out and I believe I screwed my phone due to stupidity
Try installing ICS Passion (or CM7) over your current ROM. If that doesn't work, it could be a hardware issue. If you can at least get to CWR, then install a ROM that doesn't require proprietary drivers to connect to your PC.

try putting it in recovery

I have been using fascinate for 7 months, and now I am using cm7 roms jt's and miui interchangingly. From two weeks ago, the phone started not being recognized through USB with saying "unknown device". I am not sure if it is because I accidently pulled out usb while mounting before.
Currently I am stuck with cm7 roms, which I love of course. no odin works since not recognized by pc. I don't think it is the driver issue cuz it worked fine for some time after switching to cm7 roms.
does anyone having this problem??

I had a similar problem a while back
I knew I had the correct drivers....even though your pc doesn't recognize it odin may still, I would boot odin and put your phone in download mode and see if it will set up a com port..if it did you should be able to use odin still...in my case coming from cm7 build 5(i think) my pc wouldn't recognize my phone but I was still able to odin the atlas 2.2 and eb01 to get back to stock and start over

If you are using Cm7 you need to install the nexus s drivers. I had the same issue until I installed the correct driver. Because of kernel hacks and such PC thinks its a nexus s.
Before installing drivers. Check on your Phone if USB debugging is checked?
I found when i try a rom and this happens, having USB Debugging turned on the PC recognizes the phone no problem.
I used the fas drivers on CM7 on a windows 7 and XP no problem
Thank you very much for all the replies.
I tried the Nexus S driver, but no go. The debugging is also checked.
The Fas driver used to work with my phone when I switched to CM7 roms. But then, somehow it started not working and detected as "Unknown Device".
Odin does not work and no com port is detected since it is "unknown device"
I think I tried everything I can. SD card works fine, and I don't mind having CM7 roms. Actually, I love CM7 roms. Also, for the file transfer, I can just use other methods wirelessly. But, I just feel nervous not being able to Odin. I hope my phone is not broken.
I am having the same probably as u leeh. Cm7 made my comp not recognize my phone .I also tried nexus drivers

Make sure in windows update settings, search and auto download drivers is on. If that doesn't work, download and install google adb driver. You can google 'adb drivers' and find sources to download them. This should work. Please let me know if this help. if it doesn't, I can walk u thru downloading and installing samsung drivers manually.
I willl try the adb driver. Ill get back asap. But I did dl the specific Vibrant driver from Samsung support page. No luck there

Still nothing. Could it be a damaged usb?

What exactly are you trying to do?
- If ur just trying to root & flash you really don't need to connect to PC.
As far as the connect to PC issue. It could be a damaged USB port but unlikely. How is the setup of ur "USB settings"
- Mass storage(should be picked)
- Also toggle the USB debugging setting as well that might help. Good luck!
Ok, got a usb jig and can get into download mode no problem. I can't get phone to be recognized as anything other than an unknown device. Tried the samsung usb drivers as well as the adk drivers. 2 different pc's and 3 different cables. I am running CM7 and I want it back to factory so I can flash something that will allow me to save my family in the event of a fire. Odin never recognizes the phone. Is there someone who has went back to stock from cm7 on a vibrant and could provide me with the proper drivers?
Thank you!
What I did is I downloaded kies mini ince installed on the PC. Plug in the phone and it will download the required drivers for your phone. Once its completed power offthe phone get into download mode and turn on Odin. It should work. Worked for me

Device manager right click on (!) Install drivers. Browse my comp...find the driver folder and install. Hope this helps.

Yeah, Kies Mini is a very easy and effective method of installing Samsung Drivers. OP, I suggest you try it.

try installing/updating KIES on your computer. Disable USB debugging from phone settings. then try connecting again. Launch KIES and see if the device is recognized. You havent mentioned if you made any changes on the phone from Stock ROM.
Also check windows update...for any driver downloads
At least you could tell us that you solved your problem

First make sure you have proper drivers installed
install PDAnet and select samung. Now connect your s2
if it still doesnt install the drivers, its the fault in the computer because if it says usb device not recognised, then its his fault
try in the backside usb ports --> worked for me one
or power off your PC and remove the plug and wait for five seconds and then turn it on (im mean power it on )
now you should be able to connect your device
Was wondering why I cannot connect my phone to the computer after installing the Rom Unofficial 10.1
The computer saw my phone before the install but not anymore. I have the latest version of Kies just

Does your computer not show it in device manager or does it not show up under Kies?
Had same issue here had to put SD in different phone to put new ROM on it.

This is a couple days old.
However For future reference...
Aosp roms sometimes require the vanilla drivers not the ones for the I717.
Just install the android sdk (WHICH SHOULD BE A STEP DONE BEFORE EVER TOUCHING YOUR PHONE) the drivers are within.
Then when you plug in it should read it as an android debugging device. And a mass storage device.
