prime...ics...dock..not charging tablet? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

so..i effin love my prime
i effin love ics
this is not another or new complaint...just soething i find odd and i'm sure there is a setting or something somewhere that i am missing...
what it is is that have my dock connected to my tablet...i did the firmware upgrade for the keyboard
i charged my dock for 7.5 hours...then connected it to my tablet, which was at 91%..
now, an hour later, i am at 85% on my tablet, still at 99% on my dock
in my battery settings, it says i haven't charged my tablet in about 8 hours..while usually when you connected your tablet to a dock, it only goes for a few minutes without saying it was connected
basically, my dock is not charging my tablet
is there anything i have to click on or change so that it does charge it?
my girlfriend's tf101 stays at 100 or 99% and the dock goes down instead...so what do i have wrong?
thanks for the help

The dock won't start charging the Prime unless it's at 70% or lower. So if you dock when the Prime is at 91% as in your example, it won't start charging until the Prime hits 70%. If you dock the Prime at 70% or lower, it will start charging immediately.
This is distinctly different than the original Transformer dock, which will maintain the tablet at 100% until the dock runs out. My guess is that this is to avoid creating unnecessary full discharge cycles on the dock.

thanks for the clarification...should have checked deeper in the functionality...thanks!

How about the dock itself? Is it supposed to be charging at all times until fully charged? Mine shows 98% and is not charging.

My experience is that, like all/most Android devices, if you plug the dock in when it's between 95%-99% full, it won't charge. If you plug it in at 94% or less, it'll charge to 100%.

Mine doesn't charge either. Tablet sitting at 65%, Dock 100%
Looks like I'll just have to bring it back. :/

[Q] Those with a dock how are you charging it?

are you charging the tab on the dock at night, or separately? does it help/hurt it to charge on the dock every night? Thanks
Doesn't the dock expands on to the tablet's battery since it has it's own. I would think when combined you should be able to charge it all at once.
Same as the original transformer. Keep it docked, and plug the keyboard into the charger...it charges both.
I've just been putting my tablet on the dock at night, and then charging them both through the dock. Both are fully charged and ready to go in the morning. I switch a lot between docked and un-docked mode, but even with heavy use during the day, I don't need to re-charge till evening.
when does the dock begin charging the tablet? right now I am on battery battery power, my dock is at 99% but the tablet is at 79, does not appear to be charging.

From the FAQ
Why isn’t my Eee Pad fully charged by the mobile docking?
When your Eee Pad is docked and disconnected to a power adapter, the mobile docking only charges your Eee Pad battery up to 90% maximum to protect your battery and prolong its life. The mobile docking recharges once your Eee Pad battery power goes below 70%. The power adapter fully charges your Eee Pad battery to 100% and recharges when below 95%.
then charging it on the dock at night will never get it to 100? where did you find that FAQ?

that is only when it's not connected to a power source. when plugged in, both devices will charge to 100%.

from support site
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/TF201/TF201_FAQ_en_20111226.pdf
it used to be available from ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/TF201/ but that isn't working today ...
I don't know everything about the battery in the tablet, but I know a bit about batteries in general. When it is plugged in, there will be an almost constant charge on the batteries, meaning heat and stress. That is not good for batteries in general and will decrease the lifespan. Now you could very well be done with the tablet soon before the battery gives out, but why take that risk.
As someone who's worked with batteries, albeit, larger that the ones in question, it is a general rule of thumb to keep the batteries between 80% and 20%. That should be good enough for home. If your travelling, yea a full charge is great and won't hurt, but it would be worse than its worth to run the battery all the way down.
Just my recommendations. Not an expert, but I been around the block.
here is a reference site for battery maintenance
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
it is interesting for Li-Ion it says to charge whilst powered off - my phone is always in the cradle - reading this tells me that is about the worst i could do.
Snippet: from above site
"A portable device should be turned off while charging. This allows the battery to reach the threshold voltage unhindered and reflects the correct saturation current responsible to terminate the charge. A parasitic load confuses the charger.
Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better."
This is also why I never buy a cheap charger for my devices - as you never know if the charger circuit is any good and if it switches off at the moment of full charge.
This becomes more important with devices where the battery is not "consumer accessible"

Battery on tablet being used before dock

I don't know if i am wrong, but i was lead to believe when the tablet is connected to the keyboard dock. the tablet will use the battery on the keyboard before the tablet. but when i open my tablet i notice the tablet battery is lower than the keyboard battery. is there a setting i can change to make it use the dock first?
I'm having this same issue.
Upon receiving the dock I tested it out and when connected, it worked fine; two battery icons appear on the bottom-right, with the arrows in between flashing to indicate it is transferring charge from the dock to the tablet. After charging the dock to full and connecting it to the tablet, the arrows are not flashing and the tablet battery continues to drain as if the dock was not plugged in.
All other dock features work fine (typing, trackpad, usb...). The dock also says it was at 100%. Currently the dock is at 98% while the tablet is at 71% (and dropping).
I'm wondering if there is perhaps a threshold that the tablet has to reach before the dock decides to transfer charge to it?
Yes there is a threshold and your just above it , its 70%.
There's another post that I can't find at the moment that describes how it works. Apparently the tablet will run down to 70%, at which point the dock will charge it back to 100%, then the process will repeat until the dock runs out.
This is a change from the original Transformer+dock, where the dock would run down all the way to keep the tablet charged. Maybe it's something to do with battery conditioning. After all, if the dock constantly runs to 0% charge, that's a full cycle. Maybe ASUS intends for the dock and tablet to both be charged mid-cycle, which is better for each battery long-term.
Thanks for the quick replies! So glad it isn't a bug but a feature
question regarding that. if the dock is flat, does that mean it can no longer be used to input into the tablet?

Nope. It'll continue working, it'll just be drawing power from the tablet rather than feeding it.

Dock -> Tablet charge policy awkwardness`

I think that the 70-90% is kind of awkward and highly overuses the tablet inner lipo charge cycles.
Imho Asus should make a utility that alows the user to decide wheter:
The tablet runs from the dock battery with no charge of inner battery
The tablet is being charged from the dock up to 90% as it is reasonable for charge process
The tablet runs on it's own battery without recharge from the dock even though the dock has some juice left.
Any other scheme proposals are welcome .
Above should however vastly improve the quality of our batteries.
At least an option to disable the charge from dock to tablet is imho a must have

could be possible via kernel mods... but you are right, i kinda dislike the current method too.
It's stupid that once I disconnect 2 fully charged modules the tablet battery gets few extra charges from the dock.
That way I cannot treat the dock as a backup battery for running or recharge for when I it is really needed.
Someone please stick this thread and make another offensive on Asus.
It would be sad to root/void the warranty just to get such a must have when it should be done on stock.
agree in 100%
Could someone explain what is the current 'charge policy'?
As as owner of the original Transformer and the headaches it came with the dock discharging charging the tablet all the time and dealing with a dock battery that had issues being registered as charged or recharging (I RMA'd and others had the same issues as well), I love, love, love the way the new charging method is.
With that said, I think choices are good and having ASUS provide a way to let you use it how you want would be nice.

Instead of always charging from the dock, when docked in it only starts charging the tablet when the tablet gets to around 70% or so.. then it charges the tablet up to around 90% and then runs off the tablet and the cycle continues. So both the tablet and the dock discharge X amount at a time.
Hm, can see both sides to the argument, depends on whether you look at the dock as a battery booster or just to aid the tablet.
A utility would be a good idea to let the user choose, just have an option in the 'ASUS Customised Settings' menu.

Does this mean that when tablet is docked, it sometimes uses tablets own battery and -not- dock battery even when dock battery is charged!? What is the point in that?
I thought that the dock gets discharged first before tablet touches its own battery.

The point maybe to address the issue with the dock in the original design where it did discharge first and causes some issues. It's still using the dock battery when docked, just a different method from how the first one was. You'll still get 16 hours or whatever out if you use both together.
Either way, it's not getting to a point on the tablet where it's going leave you with like an hour left to play with should you undock it.. mid 70s seem to be the lowest it will go so if you do go all day with it docked and in use, the dock battery will get to 0 and the tablet will be around 90
yes there could be a time where you take it off the dock at 75 with some juice left in the dock.
Just to me it's a lot better coming from the original Transformer.
I can understand some folks who would rather just use dock's power first and then the tablet. But again, as an owner of both and seeing how both work, for me this is a better way
If the dock has no battery but the tab has loads, and you plug the dock in... would it work? If no, then I can see why it doesn't discharge first, if it does then there really isn't any point.

Yep, the dock starts charging the tablet when tablet drops below 70%.
It charges up to 90%.
But note that the dock also needs battery for itself, so if you have a full tablet battery the dock battery will drain as well as the tablets battery. So if you want to use the dock as mobile battery and not as a keyboard it is the best to dock the keyboard when the tablet reached about 30 or 40%.
Otherwise you will wate energy.
Also, once the dock gets down to about 30%, it will not re-charge the tablet until the tablet also gets down to 30% (guessing it's more efficient for the dock to power itself while it can). There's a 2 battery monitor widget on the market which will plot the charge for you.
the built in widget monitors both batteries when they're connected, and the quick settings in the notification panel also shows both.
but the few apps on the market are smaller widgets if that's something you want

Transformer Prime keyboard dock charging question

From what I remembered, if you dock the TP into the keyboard dock, the dock will start to charge the TP tablet? What I notice is, if the TP is at say 85% and I dock it, it will not charge the TP. If I turn off the TP and turn back on it will start to charge the TP.
Also noticed last night that once the TP battery went down to 70% it started charging, but this not good as I would be better to always have the TP fully charge.
For those that have the keyboard dock, does your start to charge the TP as soon as you dock it? If so, I will exchange the dock, have 1 week left.

Charge starts at 70% then it loads the tablet to 100% and then starts charging again when its down to 70%.
Thats actually good like this and more healthy for the battery instead of being at 100% all the time.
Imho they should even have implemented something like this on the low end, like the dock would stop loading the tablet at 15% and only give the rest of the charge to the Tablet if the tablet drops under 15%.

Can the dock be charged by itself,by hooking charger cable up to it? or does the prime have to be attached in order to charge keyboard?
I should have me a dock on the way. Very excited to see & experience all these great things I've been hearing about the dock. I know the extra battery life added will be great along with USB host capabilities. plus full size SD card slot.

Dock can be charged without TP on it. The dock has a connection just like the TP on the side to charge it.
I still don't see why, when I shut down TP with 85% battery and I turn it on, it will charge the TP.

Yeah, it should only charge between 70-90%.
sorry for digging out this one, but I thought i'd better add my question to this thread because the topic is mentioned before.
Is there any possibility to change the behavior of the dock charging the prime?
I mean like the dock starts charging at 50% and charges till 70% but stops when it reaches a certain percentage.
I thought I read about it before but I couldn't find it yet.
Let me know if you can help me, and if it's possible to do with my locked but rooted Prime.
Thanks in advance.
