Transformer Prime keyboard dock charging question - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

From what I remembered, if you dock the TP into the keyboard dock, the dock will start to charge the TP tablet? What I notice is, if the TP is at say 85% and I dock it, it will not charge the TP. If I turn off the TP and turn back on it will start to charge the TP.
Also noticed last night that once the TP battery went down to 70% it started charging, but this not good as I would be better to always have the TP fully charge.
For those that have the keyboard dock, does your start to charge the TP as soon as you dock it? If so, I will exchange the dock, have 1 week left.

Charge starts at 70% then it loads the tablet to 100% and then starts charging again when its down to 70%.
Thats actually good like this and more healthy for the battery instead of being at 100% all the time.
Imho they should even have implemented something like this on the low end, like the dock would stop loading the tablet at 15% and only give the rest of the charge to the Tablet if the tablet drops under 15%.

Thanks Clouds5, now I know I don't have a defective dock. I think I would prefer it would start to charge a 80%, but that's just me. Thanks again for the info.

Can the dock be charged by itself,by hooking charger cable up to it? or does the prime have to be attached in order to charge keyboard?
I should have me a dock on the way. Very excited to see & experience all these great things I've been hearing about the dock. I know the extra battery life added will be great along with USB host capabilities. plus full size SD card slot.

Dock can be charged without TP on it. The dock has a connection just like the TP on the side to charge it.
I still don't see why, when I shut down TP with 85% battery and I turn it on, it will charge the TP.

I'd say its probably a bug , maybe a file gets reseted that sends info to the dock or something.
jep the dock is great indeed Gives you a whole new experience.

not to mention if they are attached, when you charge both the tfp and dock led light up as charging/charged

Does everyone's dock charge the TP only to 90%? My keyboard dock stops charging my TP at 90%.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium

Yeah, it should only charge between 70-90%.

sorry for digging out this one, but I thought i'd better add my question to this thread because the topic is mentioned before.
Is there any possibility to change the behavior of the dock charging the prime?
I mean like the dock starts charging at 50% and charges till 70% but stops when it reaches a certain percentage.
I thought I read about it before but I couldn't find it yet.
Let me know if you can help me, and if it's possible to do with my locked but rooted Prime.
Thanks in advance.

Dock -> Tablet charge policy awkwardness`

I think that the 70-90% is kind of awkward and highly overuses the tablet inner lipo charge cycles.
Imho Asus should make a utility that alows the user to decide wheter:
The tablet runs from the dock battery with no charge of inner battery
The tablet is being charged from the dock up to 90% as it is reasonable for charge process
The tablet runs on it's own battery without recharge from the dock even though the dock has some juice left.
Any other scheme proposals are welcome .
Above should however vastly improve the quality of our batteries.
At least an option to disable the charge from dock to tablet is imho a must have

could be possible via kernel mods... but you are right, i kinda dislike the current method too.
It's stupid that once I disconnect 2 fully charged modules the tablet battery gets few extra charges from the dock.
That way I cannot treat the dock as a backup battery for running or recharge for when I it is really needed.
Someone please stick this thread and make another offensive on Asus.
It would be sad to root/void the warranty just to get such a must have when it should be done on stock.
agree in 100%
Could someone explain what is the current 'charge policy'?
As as owner of the original Transformer and the headaches it came with the dock discharging charging the tablet all the time and dealing with a dock battery that had issues being registered as charged or recharging (I RMA'd and others had the same issues as well), I love, love, love the way the new charging method is.
With that said, I think choices are good and having ASUS provide a way to let you use it how you want would be nice.

Instead of always charging from the dock, when docked in it only starts charging the tablet when the tablet gets to around 70% or so.. then it charges the tablet up to around 90% and then runs off the tablet and the cycle continues. So both the tablet and the dock discharge X amount at a time.
Hm, can see both sides to the argument, depends on whether you look at the dock as a battery booster or just to aid the tablet.
A utility would be a good idea to let the user choose, just have an option in the 'ASUS Customised Settings' menu.

Does this mean that when tablet is docked, it sometimes uses tablets own battery and -not- dock battery even when dock battery is charged!? What is the point in that?
I thought that the dock gets discharged first before tablet touches its own battery.

The point maybe to address the issue with the dock in the original design where it did discharge first and causes some issues. It's still using the dock battery when docked, just a different method from how the first one was. You'll still get 16 hours or whatever out if you use both together.
Either way, it's not getting to a point on the tablet where it's going leave you with like an hour left to play with should you undock it.. mid 70s seem to be the lowest it will go so if you do go all day with it docked and in use, the dock battery will get to 0 and the tablet will be around 90
yes there could be a time where you take it off the dock at 75 with some juice left in the dock.
Just to me it's a lot better coming from the original Transformer.
I can understand some folks who would rather just use dock's power first and then the tablet. But again, as an owner of both and seeing how both work, for me this is a better way
If the dock has no battery but the tab has loads, and you plug the dock in... would it work? If no, then I can see why it doesn't discharge first, if it does then there really isn't any point.

[Q] When does dock charging activate?

Im curious as to what controls when the dock charges the prime as Ive noticed that it doesnt charge autmatically once the two are docked.

Don't have mine yet but people are saying that the dock will let the tablet get down to 70% then it will charge the tablet back up to full, then wait for it to get down to 70% again and so on.

Yep, the dock starts charging the tablet when tablet drops below 70%.
It charges up to 90%.
But note that the dock also needs battery for itself, so if you have a full tablet battery the dock battery will drain as well as the tablets battery. So if you want to use the dock as mobile battery and not as a keyboard it is the best to dock the keyboard when the tablet reached about 30 or 40%.
Otherwise you will wate energy.
Also, once the dock gets down to about 30%, it will not re-charge the tablet until the tablet also gets down to 30% (guessing it's more efficient for the dock to power itself while it can). There's a 2 battery monitor widget on the market which will plot the charge for you.
the built in widget monitors both batteries when they're connected, and the quick settings in the notification panel also shows both.
but the few apps on the market are smaller widgets if that's something you want

prime...ics...dock..not charging tablet?

so..i effin love my prime
i effin love ics
this is not another or new complaint...just soething i find odd and i'm sure there is a setting or something somewhere that i am missing...
what it is is that have my dock connected to my tablet...i did the firmware upgrade for the keyboard
i charged my dock for 7.5 hours...then connected it to my tablet, which was at 91%..
now, an hour later, i am at 85% on my tablet, still at 99% on my dock
in my battery settings, it says i haven't charged my tablet in about 8 hours..while usually when you connected your tablet to a dock, it only goes for a few minutes without saying it was connected
basically, my dock is not charging my tablet
is there anything i have to click on or change so that it does charge it?
my girlfriend's tf101 stays at 100 or 99% and the dock goes down instead...so what do i have wrong?
thanks for the help
The dock won't start charging the Prime unless it's at 70% or lower. So if you dock when the Prime is at 91% as in your example, it won't start charging until the Prime hits 70%. If you dock the Prime at 70% or lower, it will start charging immediately.
This is distinctly different than the original Transformer dock, which will maintain the tablet at 100% until the dock runs out. My guess is that this is to avoid creating unnecessary full discharge cycles on the dock.
thanks for the clarification...should have checked deeper in the functionality...thanks!
How about the dock itself? Is it supposed to be charging at all times until fully charged? Mine shows 98% and is not charging.

My experience is that, like all/most Android devices, if you plug the dock in when it's between 95%-99% full, it won't charge. If you plug it in at 94% or less, it'll charge to 100%.
Mine doesn't charge either. Tablet sitting at 65%, Dock 100%
Looks like I'll just have to bring it back. :/

Charge on demand from dock?

So when the tablet is docked, it's not always charging from the dock. This seems like a good idea, probably best to not be constantly running both batts like that. Ok well what if I'm roamin around, and want to dock for 5-10 minutes and get dock power. When it docks, it doesn't automatically start transferring power. Is there anyway to dock it, and force it to initiate the transfer so I can get as much power as possible before I have to undock again? Also this would be when I'm not near wall power, or my charge cable. (I do a lot of server work and I'm back and forth between racks a lot.) Or is there a threshold it looks for to begin? Inactivity for 5 minutes, difference of more than a certain %?
It only charges if the battery is 70% or lower, and charges it up to 90%. I don't know of or am aware of any way to change this though.

Mine seems to charge all the time. The battery in my dock was at 100% and with just a couple of hours of being connected it's down to 59% and the tab is at 88%. Both were at 100%. I noticed this a few days ago and I'm still looking to figure out why this is like this on my combo. The only way to keep my dock from depleting seems to be to remove the tab from it whenever I'm not using it. <shrugs>

Me too, if I understand what you're saying.
I happened to be taking some screen shots so I was able to go back and see it - my dock drained from around 35% to 0% in 45 minutes.
And maybe I shouldn't do this and I wont do it again (I thought I had done it before) but last night I just left the tablet and dock together, shut and asleep. This morning the dock was dead and the tablet still had .... I don't know but maybe around 80% or so.
It's gotta be a setting.

Just docked it, and it's transferring now. Dock @ 98%, tablet was at 82% when docked.
I'm sure there's a pattern, but it's definitely not charging all the time. If they're both at 100% when i unplug in the morning, the tablet will get down to about 75% before it will start charging an hour or so later. But this isn't consistent. Some times it will be 30 minutes or so in the morning before it's charging with the tablet only down to 90-95 %, or I've seen it drop below 70% before the charge starts.
Huh... Well never mind then! I believe I read that somewhere, and mine does conform to what I posted... Very odd.

Keyboard dock works even when it's completely discharged!

So as the title says, even after my dock exhausted its own battery recharging the ATP, it's still functioning. I'm showing 0! and it's still going strong. For me, that's really awesome that I don't have to worry about whether or not I remembered to charge the dock.

only the grey one, i have the champagne prime -_-
Last night I found out that the SD card on my dock no longer worked after the dock had given all of its power over to the tablet. Does the sd card slot on anyone else's dock still work after the power in the dock has drained out? The keyboard still worked. I think that what I saw was normal but after seeing this thread I just wanted to make sure.
One thing though. Isn't it bad to deplete lithium ion batteries down to 0? Or does the keyboard dock reserve some sort of minimal charge so it doesn't ruin the Battery?

i don't know about the prime yet as i don't have one yet, but with the first gen transformer, what they did was once the keyboard is drained to 3% it would stop charging the tablet and use that as reserved
usually that 3% last a couple of days even when the tablet is connected so i'm not sure if the tablet is giving power or not but the keyboard still works

It's highly unlikely that 0% on the battery meter literally means a complete discharge of the LiIon cells. There is likely 15-20% charge still left in the cells, but the battery reports 0% because to go any lower would risk damaging them. Basically, the manufacturer isn't going to let you damage your device simply by using it in the intended manner.
...and for clarification, these aren't old-school LiON batteries, they're Lithium Polymer...a little different. When the machine is reporting the battery as 0%, it's not actually that low as the above poster has stated. In fact, if your tablet is running when both batteries reach 0%, it smartly uses the little bit of power it has left to shut itself down cleanly.
Li-Po batteries wont go lower than 2.7V but generally kept above that to be safe.
3.0v is the normal safe discharged voltage (per cell), so your 0% reported on the prime is really 3.0v (per cell) ... nowt to worry about its all normal.
3.0v = 0%
4.2v = Full
I'm guessing the dock has a 3cell Li-po too ?
