Question about rooted tablet... - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Just had my tablet rooted but it doesn't say 9.9.9 software version. Is something wrong? My friend said he followed the steps by indirect. it still says software version 1.4.0

Hello @jumpman23j welcome to the forums, WHICH ROOT METHOD DID YOU USE?
ok i'll guess and say Indirect's, if so please follow his other thread specificly to stop OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405418

Yes you should be good now but i would even recommend to freeze device manager an unfreeze whenever you need to download from B&N app. You need titanium backup pro for that purpose.

Can you please explain the need for titanium backup pro again? So since I blocked the OTA I can't currently download from B&N? Sorry for the stupid questions. And thanks for your help and time.

Have you rebooted it at all. Mine only showed 9.9.9 after I did this

TiBU Pro is so you can freeze DeviceManager.apk, which, if you want to feel truly safe from OTA's, you can do. the problem with doing that is that if DeviceManager is frozen, you can't dl from B&N. You would need to unfreeze (thaw) it, dl what you want, then freeze it again.
I am not sure this is absolutely needed, but hey, an ounce of prevention...

i think if you freeze device manager, the info for the owner of the device under device info becomes unavailable... not sure if thats important to you but yeah...
aside from freezing the B&N app store it also turns your owner info into unavailable.
if you did the extreme debloat from indirect's nook and zergy then the unavailable thing has already been applied...

Well I did nook and zergy way back, to root the tablet. But I don't know if I did extreme debloat, unless that's just automatically part of the nook and zergy process.
Is there a way to apply the extreme debloat option without running a whole new root?

i think adb hijack is what your looking for... i don't really know how to use it though lol, might learn how soon though so i can push some vid files directly to /data instead of having to transfer to sd card first and then to /data
still have 2.5 gb of internal left...

Hello, my healthy advice is research a bit more until you understand more of how all this works. If you want to re-root and you do it wrong you can brick you device and get a big exclamation mark, read carefully and ask whatever you don't understand before you do things. If I be you first of all i will ask myself exactly how I want my nook to act, in the end you be sure if you want full debloat or not but if you do you wont have support on indirects thread (that is stated in his start post [OP]) is why I say read carefully.
Now for re-root with a newer version of nook&zergy by Indirect you need (must) to install his adb hijack application, you can find that application (app) in apps and themes section of this forum.
Have fun.

[Q] What Not toDo

Thanks so much to all those who helped me root! It was nothing short of a miracle.
Anyhoo, prior to rooting, I read that having root access is not a good idea for those who don't know what they are doing because they could really mess things up. Therefore, I need to know what NOT to do.
Also, should I disable debugging again or leave it as it was during the root process?
From what I've read it looks like even if you mess it up bad you can recover to new with the SD card method or 8x failed boot.
If this is your first time rotting any device, i would suggest you to use the search function religiously, and please keep asking questions if you are unsure of anything.
Almost the whole process can be redone with no harm to the device, ie bricking. Some booboo may make it a bit harder to fix, like erasing your keyboard apk or just generally not double checking your work before rebooting the device, ie granting permission and ocerwriting files. Use titanium backup, it is your best friend.
I would suspect the hardest thing to achieve is establishing usb debugging on your pc, looking for the long string of numbers when you initially run Indirect's script. He has done a lot for our community, given us a lot of the tools that we use.
Last but not least, use the "thank you" button if someone helped you.
Ps: in that order: allow install from unknown source, uncheck/recheck both usb debugging, uncheck automount.
Welcome!

You set usbdebugging prior to your very first rooting attempt, and unless specified by a dev, leave that setting enabled. It's been known you may have to "uncheck/recheck" usb debugging to achieve root or block OTA or other functions, don't ask me why.
Whew--OK, then I should be good to go!
One last question (yeah right)!
If I only got as far as blocking the OTA to the point where my software version says "unavailable"--am I safe from the OTA? I didn't get so far as restoring the BN stuff.

don't quote me, but i believe there were instances where OTA was pushed even with "unavailable" version number. Your ultimate goal is to get 9.9.9 using Indirect's script. here's what i did:
First i backup my original .com.bn.devicemanager in case i made a mistake. I erase any previous restore copy of devicemgr in Titanium backup of devicemanager. Go to dev setting, and uncheck/rechck usb debugging (see?), load the contents of indirect's KillOTA zip files into your Titanium backup folder on your SD card. Hit restore (app+data), and voila! Then check settings page, you should be 999 now.
Rooting is a fairly easy and safe process.. If you use Titanium Backup it is generally a good idea to freeze apps instead of deleting them.
Read, enjoy, and ask questions if you cant find the answer before doing anything you are unsure about..

I would suggest looking at this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405418
Having the software version at "unavailable" might be sufficient, but Indirect's method sounds even more promising (and won't cause B&N services to function in an odd way should you choose to use them).
[edit] I'm too slow. Too many people trying to help!
I did root yesterday (a long, arduous process for someone like me!) but I just wanted to make sure that what I did yesterday is still current for blocking the OTA, even though I only got as far as getting my software version to say "unavailable"--(meaning, BN store and whatnot no longer works for me.)
Or, do I need to do the whole process that was shown on the video "How to block the OTA update" ?
Even though "unavailable" may be sufficient, but Indirect has given us a zip files that we patch in our SD card's tb folder. Given his track record, i'd say stick with his method here's the link.
OK, thanks! LOL, more for me to work on today. What seems easy peasy to most is like hieroglyphics to me The part I didn't do was the "restore DeviceManagerService"--I'm such a NooB.

Eek. So I'll definitely need to do that then. I only got as far as freezing the device mgr lol! I was really hoping that was enough since I'm so incompetent at this.
Still learning all this, but have what is probably a very stupid questions. I understand all, but what does "RESTORE" DeviceManagerService mean. What does the RESTORE part mean? Is it just copy over the original version with an updated one or is it something you click-on to restore?

When you are in Titanium and tap on DeviceManagerService 2.3.4, you should first tap "Backup" and then at that point if you tap DeviceManagerService 2.3.4 again you should see the "restore" button.

[Q] Do I have these steps correct for rooting etc?

I believe I am ready to root my NT but am second guessing myself so could you wonderful people read the steps I believe I need to follow to see if my understanding is correct. If I have any part wrong could you please correct me? Thank you in advance. (I will be thanking you again when it all works.)
1. Turn off wi-fi
2. Factory Restore either by using the ‘n’ and power key 8-10x or the magic sd card
3. Use Indirect’s [Blocks OTA's!] Full root for Nook Tablet. [11/20/11] [Permanent root!] with help from Albert’s videos as I need VIDEO Collection: How To Root, use Dropbox, demo by Albert Wertz of Tabletroms
4. [simple]How to stop OTA's[tutorial] Will I need to do this, taking it to 9.9.9 or is that done already in the root (step 3)?
5. Install HomeCatcher
6. Now do brianf21’s Hidden Settings App Updated 12/29/11
7. Then do SG Pillar’s instructions with ADW Ex launcher to make my homescreen the way I want it.
Now if I do all above correctly I will:
A. Block those damn FOTA updates
B. Still be able to use Nook apps/site/books
C. Be able to use Amazon apps
D. Be able to use Android Market
Please make corrects where needed. I don’t want to brick this thing but I want to be able to use it with the freedom I feel I have the right to. Once I know I have stuff right I will throw back a no-doze with a pepsi-max and get to work. Thanks for your help!!

I just re-watched the videos. I can't thank you enough for those. I will be doing the root first thing in the morning. Two questions...
1. Do I need to do the factory restore first to go back to 1.4.0?
2. Do I leave the wi-fi for the whole process or do I turn that off after doing the drivers?
Again thank you and all rest for all your hard work!

[Q] I think I need to reroot...??

Im getting the problem that a lot of people have gotten, that the android market is no longer working (try to start it; You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?), probably due to an auto update. I had rolled back to 1.4.1 to root (which i later learned was unecessary), so the device updated itself a few weeks after my root. I used albert's method on a 4gb microSD.
Do I need to reroot the device? my concern is, will I lose all my apps, and all the settings of those apps? what all is lost / how should I go about fixing this?
anyone else have or know how to fix this issue?
go back to 1.4.0 and use albert's root sdcard method.
Will this cause it to try to update to 1.4.2 again in the future? Or will this fix it because the root was meant for blocking updates on 1.4.0?
I'll lose all my apps correct?

It all depends which root method you use to root but what you can do is always once rooted apply the the block separately by using titanium backup (indirect's method) that way you won't get the update, so far that is the most reliable way.

[Q] Not able to uninstall apps

Alrighty, so I rooted using the Indirect method and I have tried unsuccessfully for a long time to unroot it. I have come to terms with the fact that I can't unroot it.
My biggest issue that I need help with is uninstalling/installing apps. Uninstalling apps removes them from the app tray, but only until the device is rebooted. Nothing STAYS uninstalled. Same with installing apps. It installs and runs while the device is on, but as soon as it reboots, the app is gone.

The suggestion you were given is proper if you have a 16gb NT that came as 1.4.0. It will work if you are able to complete the task properly. It formats appropriate partitions and then rewrites them with zeros then places 1.4.0 recovery and reboots recovery. It does work; for me at least. I have used numerous times.
I keep an sdcard with this and another with cwm boot ready at all times as I tend to try new things regularly.

I'm asking for help on my app problem. I'm not flaming anyone. I'm just saying that I already asked for help a month ago on how to unroot my NT and, while lavero.burgos was very helpful, it was never solved, even trying the several ways to unroot she and others suggested. I'm not looking for help on how to unroot/reroot. I've tried the Adam Outler post and it doesn't work on my NT. It won't boot into CWM. And I can't use ADB. (see here for my original post on unrooting)
As I've said, I accept that I cannot unroot my device for whatever reason. I just need help with my app problem. I even installed Titanium and uninstalled the unwanted apps. Rebooted and they all came back. My NT is like 10-Second-Tom from 50 First Dates, I swear lol
Also, side note, I'm pretty sure the reason the acclaim update doesn't work is because my NT doesn't have the B&N firmware on it anymore. I brought my NT to B&N and the guy tried resetting it for a while and he couldn't get it to reset. He said it was because there wasn't any B&N firmware left.
Don't have a NT, but planning on getting one.
However major post-root tool is this: http://roc-city.com/android/SdxAppRemoval-1.5.apk
Does that help? Make sure you backup any apk before you delete them - if you mess up, then you can always restore the apk.
I will have to try when I get home tonight. I'll let you know, thanks.
Like I said, it was rooted using the Indirect method. So it was reset to 1.4.0 before rooting. It now reads as 9.9.9. It's a 16g.
OK, sorry...haven't been able to get to trying out the suggestion.
When I do the Adam Outlet Ubuntu method, it just reboots a bunch of times (almost like 8 failed boots) and then boots up like normal. No Ubuntu, nothing. Just boots up like there's no SD card in.
Next suggestion?

How to backup the Prime without root..

I am on WW 21, Titanium Backup is installed, but since I lost the root after the last update, Titanium no longer works and I cannot re-root.
I would like to make a factory reset of the Prime and not to lose my installed programs.
What should I use to do that. The Prime is not unlocked.
Is there a simple app that can make a backup of my apps.

Google is your friend!
Could use the included AppBackup from ASUS. I'm pretty sure MyBackup Pro does not require root and will back up nearly everything you would want to. Be sure to move any music/photos/whatever to an external mSD/SD card as well.

Easy find:

That should do.

I have no issues in this case, just wanna make a reset and not reinstall my apps, wifi and all the rest
I tried adb.exe and followed the guide in this forum, but I could not find out.
I would like a tool that take a clone of my Prime's stuff and save on an external HDD or directly on the SD Card I have.
Maybe I am not nerd enough to find out
loosing root is not an issue??
To me it would be the first concern ...
the second that I missed the forum...
but try the internal Asus backup as buxtahuda suggested. That's the reason why they put it there, isn't it? Otherwise you know where to complain don't you ?
But than it's always better to reinstall from scratch after a reset, isn't it?
And as buxtahuda stated also: Google is your friend. Just login with your resetted prime into your account. Google has stored almost all your installed applications if you let your device synchronize before you resetted it.
Good luck noob
from another noob
I found out.. thanks guys.

Would be great to be able to create images like a nandroid without root, but I guess that's kind of an oxymoron statement since you have to be able to get into the system files.
