Greetings,
I'm about ready to jump ship from Sprint and switch to Verizon. I've been looking over Verizon's top end phones and the HTC Rezound looks to be one of them.
Coming from an HTC EVO 4G, I have a few questions regarding the Rezound
Do incoming & outgoing MMS pictures come out over compressed? This is a huge problem for me using my EVO where I get overcompressed postage sized pictures and it drives me crazy.
My EVO battery SUCKS and reading over the reviews, it seems like it's also an issue with this phone. What has your experience been?
How is video playback using Flash in the browser? 480p videos are incredibly choppy with my EVO, it was like a slideshow.
Does this phone have HTC Hub? Having the ability to remotely track & wipe your device is a huge benefit.
I was considering getting the Galaxy Nexus, but I'm reading that phone has bad signal due to crappy radios. I've never had a signal issue with my EVO, is it safe to assume this is also the case with the Rezound?
How's the microphone quality? Is it decent? On my EVO it's terrible... It's especially noticeable when playing back video... There was too much compression on the audio and I sounded robotic.
Thanks in advance, much appreciated!

I'll answer a few from my experience.
1. I've never seen MMS be compressed to small images; they're always decently sized (big enough for me to see).
2. The battery isn't the greatest, but it can get me through a day.
3. I've watched Flash on Youtube in 720p mode (hey, we have that 720p screen) and it runs incredibly smooth. Tried in 1080p mode just to try, and that was the only mode that was choppy.
4. -
5. Yes - the Rezound's radios are decent (I can't compare to GNex since I don't have it). Does keep 4G for me. Rarely drops it.
6. Recording videos, the microphone (along with camera) are great. Pics up the images in low light settings and picks up sound nicely.
Does the phone have that instant 10% battery drop once you take it off the charger? That's also been an issue with my EVO.

No, it doesn't.
And as to #4... there is at least one ROM that has HTC Hub, can't remember which one. But you can also download an app to track and remotely control your phone if you don't use a ROM that has it. Cerberus is paid, I think Avast! does it free but I may be mistaken. Phone Locator is free, never tried it so can't comment on performance. I think I decided to try Cerberus and buy it if it works well.

No, I think they look fine

Battery life is awesome with this phone. Better than HTC Desire which used same CPU and a smaller screen than your evo
How is video playback using Flash in the browser? 480p videos are incredibly choppy with my EVO, it was like a slideshow.
I think they are OK

No, but custom roms will most likely add it back

Rezound has great signal. LTE is awesome

Idk I pretty much use my phone for it's screen. I hardly talk on it.

My answers are bolded under their questions
#2 for battery life - has been great for me. I use a task killer to kill off the bloatware, and using it as phone & checking email I can get a little over a day from it. Streaming music for a couple hours (with screen off!) it easily gets me to the end of the day.
It doesn't have the 10% battery drop right off the charger either. (Beats my OG droid too! But I'm not sure I had that battery conditioned right, plus it is now 2 yrs old )
#5 I do not have a problem with signal here...if I have 4G available, I am on 4G, else I'm on 3G. I haven't had may places where I've "hopped" around back and forth.
#6 Mic is great - in regards to phone calls, the Rezound has this odd bit (I came from OG Droid) where it really does a good job at cancelling out background noises from the other person's side. It sort of reminds me like how speaker phones work, but not enough to annoy me. I have had less need to up my volume to hear people in my experience.
Honestly, from all I've seen, I would pick the Rezound again over the GNex. I do look longingly at the ROMs and Devs swarming that phone, but I think it's more apparent in the difference between the two phones as opposed to actually be deficient in ROM & Dev support Plus, I really needed ROM & Dev support for the Droid to keep it running well - this phone is doing very nice stock (w/ root). It hasn't been too annoying to do all the de-bloating and such with my workarounds.
Thanks guys, much appreciated!
Edit: One more question, what's the boot time like on this phone? Is it pretty fast? My EVO took like 3 minutes.
no lie
if i power down and power my device back up, the boot time is usually 15-25 seconds no lie.

At first it will be fast. but eventually it will get bugged down depending on the amount of apps... But should still be relatively fast.

Are you 100% satisfy with your E3D? Why/why not?
Had mine for two weeks now...
Can't say I'm that happy. Random reboots, reception issues, and things like my battery discharging even though its plugged into my USB annoy me.
Stickin with it though, I have faith in this thing.
I am very satisfied with it in an "off-the-shelf" capacity. There is virtually no lag, and does everything I would expect from a non-rooted phone very well.
I don't have any of the issues though. No reboots, screen issues etc.
Once it is perm rooted it will be perfect.

Am I the only one with a perfect E3D? I've been reading threads from other site as well. A lot of people had problems. On the released date, I called sprint rep to upgrade. Ever since the day I received it, never had any problem, but for some reason still not satisfy. Maybe because there's no permanent root s-off?

Lmao mine takes about 6 to 7 hours to charge and it will sit at 99% and keep charging succks lol think its staying awake .
I was happy with the EVO but not Sprint. Sadly i blows in my area (or PR entirely) dropped calls, goes straight to roaming in the first floor of my house, average data speeds or 200kbps and a all time low of 7kbps etc. It wasnt worth the switch from TMO. Good thing they let me reactivate before 30 days of cancellation and its like it never happened im back at 5mbps land and my phone works at home now horray!!! Bummer since the 3VO was a nice peice of kit

I'm very happy no issues at All!! May be the green tint on the pics but it doesn't bother me.at all cuz of the Camera Effects u can change colors and stuff, battery life has been great
Ohhh I found a bug, my bootloader still says S-Off lol

For me i am Happy but would be happier if the stuff was better implemented, seriously HTC no Hardware Acceleration for 2D or Browser, They could have just taken the stuff from CM and put in, Also Animations aren't that smooth, when i plug in via USB the screen responsiveness goes down. 3D is something i am loving. Woulf be happier if they had put in a 8mpx camera in there to go with a 5mpx or just 2 8mpx
This phone gives me a boner every time I turn the screen on.
Everything is pretty much perfect except for the green tint thing and I'm hoping they'll fix that with a future software upgrade. If not, it's still not a deal breaker for me.
I like my EVO 3D but realize it isn't perfect however some things may be fixable via an update.
Since some barely talk on their phone and use text while other barely text etc. I'm curious what effects the most people?
I've experienced a few of the items listed but not all. I'll admit even if the picture quality isn't great I use my phone so infrequently it won't really bother me ever but I thought I'd include the most common issues people post about.
Mine is the speaker phone. I don't make many "real" calls, but I do make about 10 or 15 calls to automated systems a day. I have enter strings of 24 digits at a rip then listen to what the system says. It's so much easier on speaker phone but a lot of times I have hold the speaker up to my ear to hear them. I've used equalizer, but really the phone just needs a bigger speaker.
I have my gf set the alarms in am on her cheap prepaid phone because that thing is twice as loud as my mega superphone.
Everything else will be fixed with cm7!
Camera freezing after taking a photo. The issue is rather random and I never had the issue before applying the OTA. I'm willing to wager that another software update can patch this.
Battery life was a huge issue for me till I got the Airrave. I think this is caused by the reception problem on this phone. So I'd probably say the choppy call quality (or lack there of) is the biggest issue next to dropped calls for me. These may all be related but since I bought a phone I would think that is what they'd make sure works properly.

use QPST to raise the volume, there is a post around here showing you how to do it.
My biggest problem with the EVO3D would have to be the *****ing that seems to follow it everywhere.
My biggest problem is no problems.
The only issue I have had is the GPS jumping all over the place, I *think* mostly when it is plugged in to the charger at the same time. Haven't seen a lot of talk about it, so this is what it does.
I can be going down the interstate at 75, no turn for 75 miles, and it will start telling to turn right, turn left, turn left, back on interstate for 75 miles. Then 10 seconds later it jumps me over to random road 1/2 mile away and tells me to turn, turn, turn, turn, then continue on for 74 miles. Etc. It happens in any nav program, Sygic, Google nav, telenav, etc. So it has to be hardware related, and seems to happen the most when it is plugged in to the car charger at the same time?? Anyone else?
Brew
It is interesting to see the results. I would think the choppy phone quality would be numer one but it is clear the speaker volume is the more common concern?
Would any of you be willing to say if the speaker problem is a bigger issue for phone calls or for other functions e.g. games/videos etc.
Were is the option for nothing
My GPS is flawless and I've never had it reboot on me once.
Everything else listed is a problem though.
Calls drop, constant 3g-4g switching even though I have a stronger 4g signal, overheating after about 5 minutes of playing any game or media file, low volume...and sometimes just a flat out unresponsive touch interface (doesn't respond to touching certain areas of the screen...sometimes).
Hey, it's a great gps but a chud stain phone.

Just switched to the 3d from the OG EVO... One thing jumps out to me is the ringers, notifications, movie/video playback etc is super duper low compared to the first evo and I don't wanna sound like a noob but the font size on the apps are smaller oh and call quality is bad, some of my contacts are linking with the wrong names, the wallpaper has a cropping bug and i still get the sense crash from time to time, but with all that said its still a better phone that my OG EVO

Smaller text is due to a larger resolution right?
For me it's definitely either the cellular/data radio or sprints (lack of) service. At home I get on average of 1-2 bars and at work, 0 (no service) - 1 bars. Makes for extremely piss poor battery life as well as extremely delayed and troublesome texts/calls/notifications.
Hmmm let's see no s-off

Once you create a poll, you can't edit or add to it.
My only prob is that I can't get the phone out of my hand.
Locked & Loaded
I'm hoping an xda developer figures a way to fix some of these items so we don't have to wait for HTC to figure them out. The things I'd love as a priority for an xda version would be better signal/call quality and tethering.
Problems? We dont have no stinkin problems! The Evo 3D has worked perfectly for me so far (6 more days on 30 day return...)
You want problems, move to T-Mo and buy a G2x!
Like many I am waffling between the Hercules and the Amaze. I really like the Amaze. It is a great looking phone and I like Sense 3.0 (looking forward to 3.5). The biggest thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on the Amaze (besides the fact that it isn't actually out yet on Telus) is the seemingly widespread reports of poor battery life.
First question: Is the poor battery life universal or is it only some people who are experiencing it while others are getting good battery life?
Second question-kind of a strange one. I mount my phone in my car with a holder which squeezes the phone from the sides to hold it. My concern is that with the usb on the side it cannot be plugged in while in the holder. Also, I am concerned that the holder will squeeze against the camera buttons and activate the camera. Does anyone have one of these types of phone mounts and does it work ok with this phone?
Thanks
Nobody has on opinon?
I've had mine for 5 days now, so I'll help out.
- Battery life is horrible. If you text a lot, your battery will drain faster than I've ever seen in my long life of Android phones. Not to mention taking pics, streaming stuff, checking email, etc... It's awful.
- Camera is good, but not amazing as people would have us believe. It's definitely better than anything out at the moment, but I have a feeling the Galaxy Nexus camera is superior to this one, even at 5mp.
- Having issues with my soft buttons. They don't light up when they should (touch the screen). They only stay on occassionally when unlocking the phone, but it's random, doesn't always work. Hard to navigate in the dark when they don't light up.
- Laggy. Like, really laggy. The Sense is nice, but it is 3.0 with no guarantees of getting 3.5 The cosmetics of Sense really bog this down, even with the dual core processor. I get irritated with lag on these Android phones, and this is no different than the others.
My advice, wait. The Galaxy Nexus is coming to T-Mobile according to my source at Samsung, who just happens to be very high up in corporate in regards to the Samsung/T-Mobile relationship. Be patient and don't waste money/extend the contract when the best phone to date is coming out very soon. I'm returning my Amaze in a couple days.
Battery life - Use juice defender Ultimate + SetCPU. Get HTC Evo 3D or HTC Sensation 1900mAH battery
Camera - Arguably the best on android
Soft Buttons - Works just fine here. Light up in the dark. Stays off in bright environment
Lag - Absolutely no lag. Dual core processor + 1GB RAM. This is not HTC Hero, It's the Amaze
Galaxy nexus - Hmmmm, a great device. Should you wait? that's up to you mate.
I'll just comment on battery life, mine hasn't been that bad at all, I routinely get through a full day without needing a charge. I use JuiceDefender, but other than that I don't change too much.
Thanks for your replies. As for battery, I'd like to get a full day (charge overnight, not have to recharge til next night) out of my phone without having to jump through hoops to make it possible.
As for Nexus, who knows if Telus will ever get it. The haven't exactly been leading the pack with getting the latest phones.
Any issue with accidentally triggering the camera with the side buttons?
It does not matter which you get, dual core devices eats battery.

It's because you don't have a source at HTC. That's what makes you a fan boy. Battery is about the same as long as it runs the same course of use. Really. Then again, that rumor is coming from a unreliable source. You! Let me hear your long Android history. I bet I got you beat hands down.
Sense 3.0 is much more responsive than Touch Wiz 4.0. How do I know this? I spend about 30+ hours in a T-Mobile show room a week. That's weird. Do I randomly through out the day try to load the same webpages on both phones? Yes. Does the HTC load full sites faster than the SGSII consistently? Yes. Have I carefully watched the battery and repeated the exact same tasks on both devices? Yes. Is the battery that much far off? No.
So is the battery life going to be that much better? Is it going to be significant enough to wait and get the Samsung Nexus? Probably not.

I hold my phone with my right hand so the buttons are kind of awkward, where my thumb would normally go but I've adapted. They have to be held for a bit before they are triggered so I've never accidentally triggered it.

As I stated in my first post, I'm more concerned with the car phone holder pressing against the buttons. I guess nobody else uses one of those. I'll have to bring the holder in with me and try it I guess.
Thanks for everyone's replies.
I have one of those types of car holders and don't have an issue with triggering the camera or charging the phone.
Can't comment on battery life yet, just got it Friday.
Do you happen to have a pic of your holder or the make/model? I don't know anyone who's used a side grip-style for a long time so I can't picture it.
I'm planning on getting an Arkon Slim Grip eventually and with the adjustable feet, it should work fine for any phone.

I've experienced the same rarely with the Atrix on stock rom. I don't think it's tegra related but poorly implemented kernel cause i dont experience such issue on faux123's custom kernel.
I love it, 99% perfect.
Thinner than I thought and a bit wider than the bionic, but feels strong, solid, and light. It is ridiculously thin- almost hard to believe
Screen is FAR better than the bionic, but you can see a bit of jagged edges if you really focus in. it is not an iphone 4 retina, but real world it will prove to be more than adequate.
Motocast is available for mac, downloading off the website now.
Has the motorola bluetooth skip issue when paired with alpine bluetooth in my car (i had the same issue with bionic). Hopefully a new rom/ BT stack (CM?) will fix down the road. Not a biggie.
Call quality: excellent.Best I have ever experienced
Speaker- loud and clear
Email gestures is a cool feature that wasnt in bionic rom. Funny thing is that it only works under the email accounts, not universal inbox view...
Gmail is available in universal inbox with its own gmail logo, yet not all features from gmail app are included in the motorola email app (make sese?).
I do see it getting a bit warm, but so did the bionic (and several other android phones). Its a catch 22: with LTE radio, and such a thin profile with zero heatsink or dissapation, heat is inevitable. You are basically one kevlar membrane away from the heat source. Warm, not hot- but after prolonged heavy use I can see it getting hot.
Smartactions is really cool and intuitive, however I wish locations were based on GPS rather than wifi (on other devices, leaving gps radio on in standby used less juice than leaving wifi in standby, constantly searching.)
I am grasping at straws to find ANY issues with the device. Slight wiggle to power button, I dont like the VZW logo (was able to get it off with a penny on the bionic, this is under the glass). screen might be a little blue/green tint at lowest brightness compared to bionic.
All in all, it is the best device available today. I can see the allure with the Galaxy Nexus, but lack of SD card is a big issue with me, as is the general plasticky feel of samsung phones. The build of this thing is awesome, as there are no real moving parts (aside from power button and volume rockers). I hate creaky phones, this solves it. Hopefully someone will show how to easily remove the battery (i dont have the guts)
I'm very curious about battery life once you guys have some time to work with that part of the device. My one remaining fear is that once fully charged, it's drained out in a short amount of time. There's not a lot of battery under that non-removable back cover, and I'd rather not find myself constantly plugging a charging cable into the thing to keep it alive more so than simply using it.
I'm just about sold on this device, but, I'd like some real world input from the present user base on this subject before I drop the cash.
Thanks!
I'm in the market for a new device as my contract is up and I my Dinc isn't doing it for me anymore, even with ICS installed. I want to know what some of you guys with experience with both of the phones think I should do. The main improvements that I want out of my next smartphone are in order:
1 - Display - mainly size
2 - Microhphone - I'm a songwriter and record song ideas to my phone all the time. the Dinc's mic is awful and distorted at anything louder than a speaking voice.
3 - Battery - I realize that with batteries not getting much bigger and LTE coming on board that this may be a pipe dream ... but I'd like to get an 8AM to midnight day out of my next phone.
4 - On board speaker - I miss calls regularly on my Dinc because it isn't loud enough and I've had to replace the speaker once already.
Here are my winners of the two after handling them in the store:
1 - Display - LG
2 - Microphone - LG by long shot (noise cancellation) - Rezound's is just as bad as my Dinc's
3 - Battery - have no clue. anyone have any insight for me? I am crazy to think getting a full day out of either of these phones is possible? I don't know if the screen/mic/data speed upgrade would even be worth it if I'm going to be tethered to the wall every 6 hours.
4 - Speaker Volume - LG
Here are a couple things I'm unsure about that I've loved about my Dinc. Any insight would be appreciated.
DEV Support - Rezound wins this by long shot, but the Spectrum is brand new, so there's no real telling what the Dev community will look like. What are the chances the Spectrum gets CM9?
WIFI Tether - I assume LG is rootable, since most LGs have unlocked bootloader & NitroHD has been rooted. Am I wrong to assume it will be rooted or does anyone know if it's happened yet?
Extra Points:
LG also had random issue of GPS not connecting while in verizon store. That could be seriously annoying.
Rezound's camera also kills LG's but I never take pictures, so it doesn't matter to me. The Mic superiority would make it easy for me to make this trade-off.
Here's a video review by wirefly that confirms most of my observations:

The Rezound is a great device. I had the HTC Desire before it and that is very similar in hardware to the dinc. My Rezound gets better battery life. If I am not actively using the phone much of the day, I can get about 15 hours out of the battery. If I am using it alot (1+ hours of screen on time for the day) the battery life drops out. I think you can pretty much get 2-2.5 hours of screen on time with the phone before it is dead. So if it sits in your pocket all day or are making calls, it will be fine all day. But if you text constantly, watch videos, play games, the battery won't last 8-midnight.
This HTC will probably have the best development of the two, as it is the best phone on verizon right now. You do have time to return phones, so I would suggest buying the Rezound. If you hate it after a week, then get the spectrum.
I hope that helps.

Based on my having the Rezound for a few days now, here's my two cents for you.
1. Display - Having not seen the IPS display yet, I can't comment on its quality, but when you crank the brightness on the Rezound it is blindingly bright.
2. Microphone - I haven't had anyone I've called complain about background noise outside of speakphone calls, but YMMV.
3. Battery - Fully dependent how you use it. When I had the phone stock, I would lose 10% battery for every 10 minutes I was surfing on 4G. Now that I'm running Senseless 2.0 I've seen a substantial increase across the board in battery life (I'm currently sitting at 35 hours since my last full charge with light use)
4. Speaker Volume - Again, haven't played with the Spectrum, but the Rezound has far and away the loudest, and more importantly, the clearest sound of any smartphone I've ever used.
I'd strongly recommend playing around with all the settings of the two side by side in the store, e.g. adjust brightness, volume, play with ringtones vs. music, etc. For what it's worth, I was completely sold on a GNex before comparing it with the Rezound, which smokes it from every angle imaginable short of stock software.
Most important factor is that the Rezound isn't made by LG...
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I'm getting another phone this coming week and plan on getting another Rezound.
another you say?... yes, I switched from a Rezound to a Galaxy Nexus(big mistake) then ended up trading the Nexus for a Bionic + $300.... and due to Bionic 'known issues' Verizon's agreed to let me get another phone again at upgrade price(& do as i wish with the Bionic).
The Rezound I already know what I'm in for and still feel it's the most superior phone(performance wise) as well as the best looking display.
I played with the LG yesterday & yes, do like the bigger screen but very worried about dev support as LG is notorious for having horrible dev support + it felt really sluggish to me compared to both the Rezound & the Nexus.
The LG does have potential if it gets unlocked/rooted, but I wouldn't want to just blindly buy it without knowing if those things will ever happen.

+10! I don't think we can really put an Lg device in the same group as the top end devices.
You buy that LG at your own risk. Rezound is the way to go.

LG is good at one thing, in my opinion...they make an amazing TV. Beyond that, I wouldn't trust them. HTC does essentially one thing...mobile communication devices, whether they are phones or tablets. They're good at what they do. LG is good at making TVs. (Just like Samsung).
I've decided just to wait it out until there's a 4g phone that can get me through the day that doesnt require making my phone look pregnant and isn't a razr maxx. Its a low usage day for me and I'm at 2.5 hours of display on time. Paying $400 for two phones that would be dead right now seems pretty dumb just for a bigger screen and better microphone.

Considering battery life is important to you, I would not get the Spectrum.
It's basically the exact same phone as the Nitro for AT&T and that got reviewed as one of the worst battery life phones you can get, can't imagine the Spectrum will be much different.
LG phones = poo.
If you are willing to wait like you said, I would wait until phones running on the new Krait architecture CPUs. (qualcomm S4 CPU/SOC)
They have the modem/radio integrated tightly into the SOC and it is also made with 28nm size.
This tight integration and 28nm will make battery life much much better than current phones.
