How to force mobile websites? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I'm using Dolphin Browser HD and with the User Agent set to "Android", many websites still default to using the desktop browser.
One of these is ING Direct (banking website), of which the desktop website is frustrating to use on a tablet.
Is there any way to force it to mobile view? There seems to be no mobile URL, which is why I'm asking. This also happens with several other websites, but ING Direct is the main one that frustrates me.
The ironic part is that switching the user agent to iPhone seems to force mobile websites fine. But then other websites break, like YouTube links go to the iPhone mobile website, instead of launching the Android app etc...
Why does the User Agent Android not work properly? Is there a way to force it to act like an Android phone?

There is an option under setting in HTC default browser to set to Mobile View. Check that and you are good to go.

How will a setting in HTC's default browser transfer over to Dolphin?
(And the reason I know it is an Evo View-specific issue rather than a Dolphin browser issue, is because these issues don't occur on my phone when using the same Dolphin app.)

I'm not sure but maybe it alters a system file not just the browser setting.

Unfortunately it does not work.
After marking Mobile View in the "Internet" app, Dolphin still brings up desktop web sites, even though Dolphin is set to "Android" user agent.
How is no one else having issues with this?

Tried it on my flyer... Android user agent didn't load it, but iPhone did. It seems that dolphin HD has a slightly different user agent than Mini, which does redirect when using android as the user agent.
HD: 4.0 Safari
Mini: 4.0 Mobile Safari
Adding Mobile to the default user agent string for Android causes ING to redirect.
The problem in this case is on ING's side. Their server is looking for the word mobile in the user agent to force the redirect.
Try this as a custom user agent and see if it works with your other problem sites:
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 3.2.1; en-us; HTC Flyer P510e Build/HTK75C) AppleWebKit/534.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.13
On edit: using a custom user agent with just the word mobile also redirected to the ING mobile site on HD

Thank you! I will try this.
How the heck did you figure that out? Haha

Try that or contact Dolphin Browser HD Support.

All I did was compare the user agent from my phone which runs mini to the user agent on HD to see what was different (http://www.whatismyuseragent.com), hardware identifiers aside...

Wow thanks for following up with them. I never would have thought about contacting them directly about this.
You actually inspired me to email them about one of my pet peeves / feature requests: the option to keep tabs up all the time, even when scrolling down the page! For a tablet, this would be amazing, for fast tab switching, rather than having to hit menu to bring up all the tabs every time.
Good to see that Dolphin support is so responsive!

[Q] Opera Mobile browser and the Google website?

I had recently switched over from HTC's stock browser to Opera Mobile browser and I'm loving it. It's much smoother and just feels better but something that was really well done in the stock browser is Google's site; really easy to use and looks and feels great. However, in Opera Mobile, it's a really bad, watered-down version that just looks ugly. Is there a way to get the good Google site to work on Opera Mobile?

Try using Dolphin Mini, I found it to be smoother than opera mobile and the google website looks normal.

If what you meant is the normal black-bar-ed google then you have to change its user agent into desktop view and go to google.com. If it changed into your local google, just click Go to Google.com at the bottom. The page will stick and then you're free to bookmark it.

I tried Dolphin Mini and it was fast but not as smooth as Opera, which I'm still using but thanks for the suggestion.
I think I found the problem. When I go to Google.com on Opera, it goes to Google.com/pda but I want m.Google.com, the mobile version but I can't go there for some reason, I get an error and get redirected to another page.

I m having the same problem. I switched from Opera to Google browser for this reason. I m a heavy user of Google search. But when i come into Opera, as mentioned by OP, the page looks torn down.
Seems like Google Page has been crossed referenced / optimized with Google Android Browser to look and work flawlessly while others browsers dont "have the source codes" to make the page appear and function in optimized state.
MoeKz, have you tried Skyfire browser. I have tried Firefox, and its worse than Opera and Dolphin. Although in the coming years m sure it will lead out like desktop browser. But i cant wait that long eh.
I'm having the same problem. I didn't like Dolphin Mini because it seemed like it waited until it had everything loaded before it actually showed me the page. I like for the text to pop up and then the images can slowly fill in.
I hate that I'm losing the Google search page. I liked how it had the extra buttons for places and the tabs across the top. *sad face*
I've been trying to get this to work the past few days, the current webpage is extremely unappealing
here is d solution!
its actually easy..
First, open up your standard android browser (not Opera), and browse to http://whatsmyuseragent.com.
It will give you your User Agent towards the top. It looks like this: Mozilla/5.0 Linux U Android 2.2.1 en-us SCH-I500 Build/MIUI AppleWebKit/533.1 KHTML, like Gecko Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1
Copy the whole thing and open Opera Mobile. Put opera:config in the URL bar and hit go. Scroll down to User Prefs (Second from the bottom) and tap on it. You will get a bunch of options. The one we're looking for is "Custom User Agent". Paste your copied UA into this text box, scroll to the bottom and hit save.
Now websites identify you as android browser n u get the same google.com , touch.facebook.com etc etc as it is i d stock browser....
should work in all phones...
P.S : this is only for Opera mobile n not for opera mini
hit THANKS button if this helps

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
I would LOVE a solution to this. I really prefer Opera over Dolphin. Here are my observations:
1. The stock browser/Dolphin with an android UA/Opera with an android UA (sometimes) all display the "android" version of google.com and facebook.com.
2. When Dolphin with an Android UA is used, everything is directed to the correct version and scaled correctly on google/facebook...just like the Android browser (they're almost the same, no surprise there).
3. When Opera with an Android UA is used, going to facebook.com doesn't always direct to the "Android" version...sometimes it's the archaic/ugly version (and even that is scaled incorrectly). Going to touch.facebook.com goes to the new version, but it still displays weird (very evident on the dropdown menus). The google homepage is the "Android" version, but it's VERY messed up.
Conclusion: There's still something different about the way Opera interprets the pages, independent of the user agent.
Theories: Opera has a TON of settings that can be changed under about:config and I'm confident something can be done to get things to scale correctly. Someone more familiar with Android is going to need to solve this, because I can't figure it out.
This link looks like it has some good info, and I'd be willing to bet our solution is somewhere in there. Is there anyway to modify Opera to do the same things Dolphin/Android can? Something with "webview"?
Someone please help!
I know this thread is old but I would like to find a solution. I have a galaxy note and am experiencing this issue. I have changed the custom user agent field but google does not render properly in opera. any suggestions?

Yes I did. Problem is Opera doesn't load the proper google mobile sight. When Changing the user agent to the same one the stock android browser use's the mobile sight is displayed but rendered wrong.
Changing User Agent in Opera Mobile won't help.
Just Open www.google.com -> tap and hold search input box in the middle. (do it in Opera ofc)
dialog box will appear (chose something like "add search engine" ) -> now give it a name like GOOGLE DESKTOP or something .
Now In search box in Opera chose it as default (green tick)
That's it. Every time when You will use it, your results will be displayed on desktop version of google.

He should be able to simply scroll down to the bottom of the page where it gives the option of which version he would like to use (mobile/classic). That works perfectly fine for me using Opera Mobile.
This problem persists in Opera Mobile 12.0.1.
Here are 3 screenshots of Google's mobile homepage accessed by the stock browser, Opera Mobile and Opera Mobile with the modified user agent.

Note how the text overlaps the images in the screenshots on the right and the upper tabs are virtually non-existent. Most websites do render properly however but I still end up going back to stock browser when Opera gives me problems. I had this same issue with Opera on my PC which is why I stopped using it. This and Firefox are the only two browsers for Android that have their own rendering engines, the rest are just fancy shells (Dolphin, Miren, Maxthon, X-Scope, etc.) for the stock Webkit browser. Hopefully Opera will fix this since I prefer this in most cases to stock.
I have encountered another issue - modifying Opera Mobile's user agent has the consequence of locking it. I.E., you will no longer be able to toggle between mobile and desktop views in settings. You will have to go back to opera:config ->User prefs ->User Agent and press the 'default' button to remove it, then hit save and restart Opera.
Conclusion: Until Opera Mobile can fix the rendering of certain websites changing the user agent to a custom one is a waste of time. Use an alternate browser for the few websites I've come across that don't look right in Opera Mobile.

Ok, now I see what you mean. Opera Mobile does the same for me. I thought you were trying to get the desktop version.

[MOD] MarketAccess.apk

Is there any basic guide on how to best use this?
MarketAccess is a branch of MarketEnabler. Personally, I use its very basic function.
With the Market closed, I go to:
Market Access > Providers > T-Mobile
Then, I open the Market and install any US restricted apps. Once I'm done with it, I reboot the phone and the default settings are automatically restored. As I said, pretty simple and basic.
From what I understood, you did not create this, (correct me if I'm wrong ) therefore it doesnt belong in the development section

What kind of useful apps are US only?
My favorite are:
Amazon Mobile
Google Books
Google Music
Google TV Remote
Netflix
Not sure if Books are now open to everyone, they just added Google Videos to Canada.
Personally, I live 45min from the US border and I have an US address/credit card. We have Netflix in Canada but the selection really sucks, compared to US.
I use a E4200 DD-WRT router as PPTP server with US IP's to all my devices (Google TV, mobile, tablet, etc.) when I'm at home. For example, you need an US IP to upload your music to Google Music site but you can use any IP to download/broadcast Music/Video's to any of your mobile devices. I know is not easy, but is worth the trouble. It really sucks that we have all those restrictions.
At least I can get all my music anywhere, without taking any space on my mobile.

Credit is clearly given into OP, I certainly hope is not going to ruin your day.
I saw many mods posted here (if you can call my change a mod... took me 2min to modify the APK), so I think is the best place for it, since is not related to Original Android development.
MOD = modification of an existing application created by someone else
There are tons of MOD threads listed in this forum, from what I saw.
Still, if I'm wrong, please let me know what would the the appropriate forum so I post there next time.
Cheers
Mate it seems to be working partially with the new market 3.1.5
You can see the currency changed to USD but you can't see the regional apps.
Could someone confirm this ?
Thanks.
It's true. I found a trick for this maybe it's too much of a headache but if you want to use new market then what you have to do is
1. Install market access.
2. Go emulate say for example t mobile.
3. Go to settings/applications/manage/ and then uninstall the updates for market. .
4. So now you have the old market. Now open the market.
5. Then wait for some time. Since it is connected to t-mobile it will update to new market.
6. Now you can download all the apps you want with new market.
The thing is it only works till restart. Then you have to repeat all the steps again.
Big hassle I know but if you absolutely have to use the new market then this is one way. Cheers.
P. S. Simply use old market with market access and freeze market updater using titanium backup to avoid all the hassle and use US APPS.

I'll test it on my phone with Market 3.1.5 and let you know guys. So far all apps worked for me, I'm in Canada.
Edit: I think I know why is probably not working for some of you.
You need an US IP address as Wi-Fi spot. My DD-WRT router is set as PPTP server and broadcasts an US IP through wireless as well wired connections. So when my phone connects to the market, it does it through an US IP. Using the VPN directly into phone will not cut it.

[FIX] Stock Browser Speed Increase w/videos [12/27/11]

Basically after some research and trial and error it seems that when the ASUS engineers were finalizing the HC build for our Primes they left some settings on which conflict with each other. I have discovered the proper settings needed to achive fluidity and speed in the stock browser which does not impact FLASH or youtube or any site that uses embedded content for that matter. Basically all you have to do is open the stock browser and in the address bar type about:debug and then tap go. Nothing will appear however click on menu then settings and you will see a debug section added to the list. Make sure that your settings mirror the image below. I have tested this with the correct settings on and off and there is a huge difference. Videos coming soon. Again if you encounter any issues let me know.

Hello everyone after reading all the mixed reviews here on XDA and being a personal owner in the community I wanted to shed some light on the browser lag issue. Initially when I got the prime I noticed the UI even with a Live wallpaper did not lag however the browser lagged a bit. I promptly remembered that stock browser has debug options. So I enabled debug and turned off "Enable OpenGL rendering " which is GPU hardware rendering of the web and I immediately noticed an increased response from the stock browser only down side is sunspider results dropped. However real world rendering and scrolling improved. Screenshots comming soon, please let me know what ur feedback is. Can't wait til ICS.

Opera is the best so far. Much better then stock or delphin.
stock browser sucks no matter device or OS. Opera mobile is the best on Prime right now.
Opera mobile is smooth, but accessing the bookmarks is so annoying. In Dolphin the bookmark access is so easy.
IMO this is why Apple still reigns. Try getting a housewife or someone not so technical, to understand they need a new browser, let alone how to do it.
Dont get me wrong, I dont have an Apple bone in my body. But cant deny there stuff is rock solid for the most part.
I've seen quite a bit of complaints about the stock browser. The ICS browser is greatly improved. I've used it on the Galaxy Nexus and it's much better than previous Android browsers. Let's just hope that Asus does actually get ICS out the door in January.
Ill try it out. I also enabled webGL. Not sure why that is not enabled, but I doubt many sites use it.

Seriously, folks, the one area where ICS will make marked and virtually guaranteed performance improvements is the stock browser. If the Galaxy Nexus browser performs decently with its meh processor and 1280X720 resolution, then we should see excellent performance on the Prime with Tegra 3.

How to view/download .pdfs and powerpoint using browser

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to use the stock browser or another one to view or download pdf files and pole point slides? My school uploads these files on their website, but when I try click one of these files the place where the pdf or slide should show is just blank. Any ideas why and how I can view/download these? At the moment I just download them on my desktop and upload them to my phone which is unconvenient. Lastly I can download pdf and slide files from other sites. Also if anyone is familar with the service my school uses it is called blackboard
I don't think you can do that just with a browser. To be sure you can test them all but it's gonna take a while
Here's a tip for you though. With the app "Download all files" you can download pdf (and all sort of files) directly on your phone. No need to use the computer.
You'll need Adobe Reader (search on Market) to view PDF's on your phone, and you can actually view PDF's on websites with Firefox if you have Reader installed (for example, a link on a website leads to a PDF, click the link, the PDF should automatically open Reader & display. I just tested this, it works).
In order to download them to your phone in the first place, you can either get Download All Files as per Mr Dickhead's excellent suggestion, or you should also be able to download them with Firefox.
try dolphin browser - it supports addons so as firefox...
Download 'documents to go 3.0' from market...u will be able to view ms word, excel or powerpoint files and attachments,...its really useful...
Like I said when I click a link on the website it doesn't download it to my phone or show up on the website. This is the reason I use my pc to download the files because I can not download or view them on my schools website with my phone. I will try firefox though
So did you do as suggested a couple times above? ...... You haven't said or acknowledged!
Try the "download all files" free from the market, so you can save files directly to sdcard. Then use your office apps to view and edit directly anytime. Done.

As far as my experience, Dolphin is the best browser for SGS2!

Facebook. What solution are you dealing with?

I think we can all agree, for the most part, that using facebook on an Android tablet leaves a lot to be desired. I started off with FriendMe because it didn't pester me with ads, but then switched to FaceDroid after FriendMe got too buggy. I found FaceDroid's UI to be far too busy and it started getting a little buggy as well, so I switched to FriendCaster, which does as many things wrong as it does right. Further, I haven't found a browser that handles Facebook's desktop website well enough for me to use it full time.
So I'm curious to find other peoples' opinions. What is everyone using to access facebook?

I don't even bother with Facebook on my Prime anymore. It's irritating. I just fall back to my laptop or Nexus.
Hopefully they develop an HD Facebook app for tablets soon.
Friendcaster
I'm using FriendCaster. I think it's the best... It really fast.
Facebook official App for android is really bad...
I tried Friendcaster but it's widget never updates automatically.

plua one. And the photo functions are great.
I just use touch.facebook.com. It's simple, albiet a bit plain, but it works. Except for when the site is down which happens weirdly often...
Don't do Facebook, thats how.
I use the facebook app, but very, very begrudgingly. It's a horrible app. Awful layout, doesn't take advantage of real estate, and there are a multitude of basic functions it can't perform.
I don't have a solution, I just came in to lament the fact that one of my most-visited websites has such a terrible native option =P

+1 I have to agree
Stock browser for full desktop site works wonders for me.
For messaging however, I use the messaging app.
I use "tinfoil for Facebook". It doesn't have those invasive permissions that the other applications have. It just loads the website in a sandbox environment. No tracking cookies, reading history, looking at my contacts or getting my GPS location.

I just use m.facebook.com in Dolphin. If you want a decent rendering of the Desktop facebook.com then use Chrome.
Just go to Facebook on your browser.
I don't get why there are all these apps for websites. You can replace all of them with a decent browser.
Scroll through theverge.com and then scroll through it via Google Currents. It's a matter of usability, not capability. Anywho, I get some weird artifacting and hotlinking when I use the desktop facebook through the browser. I'm just curious as to what everyone else uses.
I have tried a lot of options, so far the best option for me is the stock browser, Shame on you facebook
I want to like FriendCaster but when I compare newsfeed with the Facebook app, it is always missing posts

I use Google+ and Blogger. When I post something on Blogger, it automatically gets syndicated to RSS, Twitter, and Facebook by way of external services, and I hope someday to Google+ without having to share posts out of the browser. Contacts have been beaten with a club enough that they know better than to Facebook me in reply.
When I used to use Facebook regularly I took to using the mobile site in Opera Mobile, much better than the app was back then.

Try out the official Facebook app for iPad and then try comparing it to the browser.. you will quickly understand. The webpage is not optimized for touch.. and chat is not working at all on the prime's browser. You have to use the messenger app.
