The only thing about the iPhone I like more than on my EVO is the scrolling. On iPhone, scrolling has a very natural feel, as if governed by a physics engine of some kind. The motion has a distinct realistic quality, as the objects first accelerate and then decelerate. The scrolling seems to have a momentum defined by the speed of the flick.
How can I implement this type of scrolling on Android?

You could submit your resume to Google and hope they hire you to re-write their broken scrolling engine. I'm being facetious, but the point is, this is something Google needs to desperately fix. It's amazing they've been churning out Android build after build without a fix to their herky jerky scrolling mechanism. iPhone and Palm's webOS got it right the first time.
What are you guys talking about exactly? I mean I don't have an iPhone, but I was using it a few times and I don't see much difference in scrolling. So this is funny to me, because you are using phrases like "desperate fix", but I don't even see, what to fix ;-D
Scrolling is decent enough as it is, but could use a lot of improvement. The difference between the iPhone and the Google scrolling is that the iPhone scrolling slows down a lot faster if you do a flick. Like if you're at the top of a long web page, say Engadget, and you flick up on your iPhone, you'll only go down maybe 1/10 of a page. Whereas on Android if you flick up on your phone, you'll go sliding down to the bottom of the page lol.
The other thing is, because the iPhone flick slows down so quickly, the phone itself doesn't have to render all of the webpage. It renders only the part of the page that you are able to see. That's why if you go too quickly you get those checkerboxes and grey areas. You don't get that on Android, because the webpage is fully loaded.
Or maybe I'm just talking out my ass...meh.

So different scrolling parameters made it "something to desperate fix"? Anyway I really like this slow deceleration and I prefer not to change it
i find the iphone scrolling extremely annoying. Its like trying to scroll through molasses, just about to get somewhere and it stops. Horrible if you ask me.
iphones logisitics are just different i think, its more hardware than software based...
Prefer smoth android scrolling anyday over sour apples!

Nyce! bumptop looks sweet!
for flicking on homescreen you can try downloading LauncherPro2. it's very smooth and you can even adjust the speed.
iPhone scrolling is definitely smoother but slower than Androids. I love how fast Android can scroll, though. They just need to make it a bit smoother. I couldn't say a fix is "desperately" needed, but anything they can do to smoothen it out would help.
I'm a huge fan of the android scrolling. Fast and smooth, all I need.

This isn't about iPhone vs. Android. I want Android to improve, and I can recognize a deficiency when I see one. The scrolling is not nearly as fluid as I've used on an iPhone or Palm Pre. When you flick and move or pan a window or menu up and down and it doesn't do it in a very natural, fluid movement. It seems to jump around and almost appears to accelerate to its final point and then abruptly stop as opposed to more gradually decelerating to its final point.

Could you record this behavior using a camera? Maybe I don't understand you, maybe I have different point of view on what is "natural feel" or maybe I just don't have these issues?
When I kick something, then first it will move with highest speed, speed of my leg, then it will slowly decelerate until stop or if it will hit something, then it will stop immediately. This is exactly how scrolling works in Android. It isn't always perfectly smooth, but it's natural and intuitive for me.

No, it's not. But for some reason people think that their likes are only ones, that one type of scrolling, looking, etc. is just better than others, so they are calling second ones: broken, desperately needing a fix, etc. They totally ignore the fact that there are many people, who have different tastes and they prefer to not change anything in current solution.

The issue I have is people calling it a problem, when actually some (me) much much prefer it over the alternative.

Well, imagine you spun a wheel that had a fair amount of friction that is fixed at its center (think of the big wheel on The Price is Right show). The moment your hand released the wheel it would decelerate at a constant rate of deceleration until it stopped. The movement would be gradual and smooth. That's not how I would describe the Android scrolling physics now.
Too often you want to flick a web page to move down, and it races all the way to the bottom without any sort of smooth deceleration. In general, the scrolling motion seemingly accelerates even after your finger is released from the screen and it abruptly stops. That is not natural. If there are those that actually prefer this motion, than I'm glad your tastes are aligned with Android's implementation. But even Google was probably not after that sort of physics engine, so I consider it broken. I only want Android to be better than it already is!
One thing you have to consider, scrolling on Android isn't GPU accelerated.
Google considered it when developing the platform, but early hardware didn't have a dedicated GPU, so they decided to go with CPU rendering only. Now that we have high-powered devices with GPUs, they are reconsidering it.
I find it a wonder that they haven't done it yet, but I really expect it to come in 3.0 with the UI overhaul.

Well, that it is true. Though I'd argue that the Palm Pre is not GPU accelerated either at the moment, and its scrolling physics are spot on.
But either way. I really look forward to the Android 3.0 GUI overhaul. It promises to be something special.

When it was announced android was getting Palm's UI guy I was excited, not because it meant we'd be getting a clone of webos, but it does mean we would be getting the same attention to detail.
I know a lot of techies like to make fun of the art majors but this is one case where you really need them.
I think what he's trying to say is that Android scrolling physics is much faster to decelerate than the ones on the Iphone. I observed it too. I tried scrolling through an article using the iphone and the scrolling ia great. It slowly decreases scrolling speed unlike the android that is much faster to stop the scrolling.
Hi there guys,
I am new to Android and coming from a 3GS.
Really been looking forward to getting on Android and this was the phone I was waiting for.
There's a couple of issues I've noticed I'm really unsure about and seem odd.
- Scrolling (no live wallpaper) if I go to an email with a bunch of pictures, or an app such as tweetdeck, the scrolling on the Atrix is really poor. Not smooth, very blocky etc… I do the exact same thing on my 3GS and it's smooth as can be. Is this an Android issue? This seems really odd and annoying…
- Mobile browser rendering. For example I bring up Techcrunch, renders perfectly in my 3GS, in the Atrix the text is too small and poorly formatted (if I increase size it's too big), the page border goes off the screen etc.. I've tried Opera, not much better. Holding the same page side by side my 3GS is far more readable than my new Atrix. That is not making me happy…
Any ideas on this guys? I'll note I am new to Android so if you want to point me to a 'read this' for tips on Android that'd be understandable.
But I'm somewhat disappointed that for extremely common functions the usability *appears* to me (after 24hrs) inferior to my old iPhone…
Thanks for any pointers / insight…
I am coming from an iPhone 4 so I completely hear what you are saying. I had tried many Android devices in the past and always ended up back on iOS due to how Fluid it was in comparison. The Atrix / 2.2 still have some areas like that but overall I feel it is pretty smooth. The browser definitely leaves something to be desired (no pinch to zoom? Really?) but I'm diggin it so far!
Good to hear at least it's not just me! I'm somewhat surprised given the OS is reasonably mature that they've not nailed this yet...
Will be interesting to hear any other's thoughts on this...
(I spent many years on Windows Mobile, and had a love hate relationship with it, maybe a bit unfair to say this soon, but starting to already see some parallels: great OS, super powerful and customizable but still not nailed on the usability front...)

There is no pinch to zoom in mobile view of webpages. So if you go to cnn.com, its mobile page, m.cnn.com will come up and there will be no pinch to zoom. But at the bottom of the mobile page if you click on full site, the full site will come up and there you can use pinch to zoom. Hope this helps.
give dolphin browser a try, (will add pinch to zoom)
also try selecting "fit web page to screen" and that should take care of your issues as far as too wide goes. 2.3 is slated to release for this phone so patience maybe a virtue here.

No pinch to zoom? You must be on a mobile site as they generally don't support pinch to zoom as they don't need it. Web sites certainly do pinch zoom very smoothly.

You're kidding right? This phone has full multitouch support, including the webkit browser. Go into google maps and try multitouch/pinch zooming there, if it still doesnt work then your phone is broken.. .or you're just "holding it wrong"
I do notice quite a few apps do not fit the screen. Some, off the top of my head are OnStar and Groupon. The default browser seems to be off as well, if you go to Adobe.com, it comes out all screwed up.
For the time being, I'm using Mobile FireFox. Even though you cannot get the Flash Player Add-On for it yet, at least the pages look somewhat decent.
for the iOS users having trouble with the browser, I highly suggest dolphin. Pages render nicely for me, pinch to zoom and overall fluid. The stock browser is good but it can be better.

IMHO, these are issues of Android OS, not necessarily the phone (emphasis on IMHO). Keep in mind, I had an iPhone 3G for 1.5 years and then a Nexus One for almost a year. I now have the Motorola Atrix. The scrolling is better on the Atrix than the N1, but still not like my iPhone 3G was on iOS 3.0. All the same applies to the web browser too. I do use Dolphin HD Browser, but at full zoom on a standard (non-mobile) page, the text looks "pixelated" on this Atrix.
I still really like this phone!

Pinch to zoom worked fine for me in everything EXCEPT the browser. I tried a bunch of different websites and attempted to go to full version although that failed a bunch of times. Firefox mobile works flawlessly so I'd say problem solved for me. I also get sync which is nice anyway.
I've been using an iPhone 4 (not 4S) for the last few days, and while there's very little I like about it, I've got to say, I'm incredibly disappointed that Chrome on iOS using 3G loads heavy pages faster than my Rezound on LTE. The rendering is just that much faster--it appears the bottleneck really isn't bandwidth, but GPU? Even with ICS, which was supposed to improve hardware acceleration.
Frustrating.

Good question, I'll give that a try for comparison. There's simply no way for bandwidth to be the problem though, I pretty routinely hit 35mbps on LTE around here.

True. Apple has tons of tricks it uses to make things seem faster on the iphone.
example: opening apps first shows a screenshot of when it last was used, it doesn't load that fast. if you move fast enough you can notice its stuck/laggy even though it seems it loaded instantly.

So, somewhat curiously, it's much more equal on wifi, which makes me curious about LTE. And I did notice that iOS Chrome seems to get stuck occasionally loading ads, where AdFree Android ensures they never load on my Rezound.
On mobile websites the Rezound seemed much quicker, on full-content sites the iPhone seemed to have a bit of an advantage still. But not nearly as big a one as on mobile data.

I just did a side by side test with my Rezound running Chrome vs a friend's iPhone 4 (no S) running its stock browser, and the Rezound absolutely trounced the iPhone in page loading speed, but the iPhone pretty much destroyed the Rezound in scrolling speed and responsiveness...
Honestly, Chrome has had some weird issues on my phone. Even though it just came out of "beta", it still seems very buggy on my phone...
I'll have to see if he doesn't mind downloading Chrome so I can do a direct comparison of the two phones with the same browser, but given that Chrome has some problems on my phone, I'm sure Chrome on iOS will give me a hard time...

Just because you can do it doesn't mean it isn't for other people. I have maybe 50+ bookmarks. I like being able to 1 click and open folders of bookmarks rather than typing every website in the folder one by one.
So I just got my nexus today and wanted to reserve judgment for a couple of days but couldn't help myself, mostly because I'm looking for answers. Out of the box I actually prefer the materials used for the nexus. The back has more grip to it but still manages to feel premium. The speaker grills are deceiving because sound only plays From the very top of them. The nexus is wider so it might just take some getting used to but for the time being it is a bit awkward to hold in landscape orientation. Watching movies that are intended to be in high def are actually sharper looking on the iPad than they are on the nexus. Both YouTube and Netflix movies. These are less complaints and more just differences I noticed
...That said my real gripe is with the chrome browser because this is what I find myself doing with the tab most frequently. Safari and even chrome on the iPad were buttery experiences. Even chrome on my note 2 is fantastic but for whatever reason chrome on the nexus 10 gives me unbearable load times, and once its loaded scrolling up and down web pages is painfully choppy and basically has a load time of its' own. I'm wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me as far as the browser goes and what their solution was. I was going to root and flash cm10 but would like to stay in rooted so that I can use my time Warner Tv app. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate your help thanks.
Try a custom ROM / custom kernel combination. I'm currently on AOKP [PUB] / Trinity Ten and have nothing but smooth performance across all my apps, good battery life, etc. Also make sure you use a youtube app that can support HD. You might have better results with the above. YMMV

Here's the thing with iPad browser compared to Android; Apple values UX above everything else, so as soon as you touch your finger to the screen, iOS devices stop EVERYTHING and handle the scrolling process exclusively making it nice and smooth. When using Safari, for example, if the page is half-loaded and you touch the screen and start scrolling, iOS stops the page from loading and will not load anything more until you release the screen. Sure, that gives wonderfully smooth scrolling, but it means it won't finish loading the page until you stop scrolling...
On Android, however, while Project Butter does raise the priority of the surfaceflinger and HWComposer, the pages still load when scrolling. On sections of the page that have already loaded it should be just as smooth, however if you scroll to a section that needs to be loaded, Android browsers will all load this section of the page while still scrolling, resulting in a small amount of jutteriness as the scrolling, rendering and loading processes fight for CPU priority. It's getting better as the OS slowly makes better use of multiple cores, but that's the basic jist of it.
This is all paraphrased from an Android development engineer as background explanation of Project Butter and iOS vs Android scrolling experience. (sorry if this is explaining what you already know, I figure the info could be useful to other people as well)
Anyway, as for Chrome vs other browsers, I personally HATE Chrome for Android (it messes up the rendering of lots of sites, only renders at quarter native resolution and loads mobile phone versions of sites by default), and so I use Dolphin Beta instead, which is incredibly smooth and fluid for my uses!
Ok at this point I'm starting to think that the nexus 10 has an issue with wifi and connecting to some routers. After googling about wifi issues it returned way too many results to be a coincidence. My dads got an up touchpad that I put jellybean on and that thing is having absolutely no issues. This isn't an android issue this is definitely a nexus 10 issue. Every other device in the house connects flawlessly but the nexus could take a 30 seconds to google something and a minute to load theverge.com. I think I'll get it replaced. If the replacement has the same issue ill hang onto the ipad. Maybe get an up touchpad

I tell her she should have got one, but she says: " I don't want to mess with it, I just want to take it out of the box and use it." Whereas I like to play with settings, tweak, and flash different ROMS. I like to customize my experience. Doesn't sound like android is for you.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Firefox will solve your problems perfectly. Its bloody fast and renders just as well as chrome. No need to root or anything, just grab from the play store and you're done. This is assuming you don't have a hardware defect. FYI, Chrome was unusually slow for me as well, but I haven't bothered to try again since using Firefox.
I would also suggest using something like the speedtest app while standing next to your router and making sure all other devices/computers are turned off - if that app is being slow under these conditions it may in fact be a hardware problem.

WiFi is always a PIA but there is no issue specific to N10's, in fact I can get better throughput using it than any other I've ever owned...including my iPad 3.
Its important to note that WiFi is a protocol, not a specific product. Consequently there are many implementations, from many different parties. Not all implementations are compatable unfortunately.
Best advice I can give is to turn any 'speed boost' modes off, ditto using a wider frequency band. Turn any compatability modes available on. If all else fails, try a different router. If you're getting issues with all routers, you may have a fault with your device.

I totally agree with you. Eventhough I do not have an iPad to compare with the first surprise I had with my N10 was how much faster it was than my old Galaxy P1000, both using the same N only network/router. Web pages almost exploded onto the screen with the N10. My router is a ASUS RT-N16 using the latest Tomato-USB firmware, it is not even a dual-band router.
Hi,
I have bought a sony tablet Z a week ago and have been really heavy using it since that.
I just cant get rid of a feeling it is very laggy. It laggs when swiping between homescreens,
going to the apps menu or opening multitasking. Even the lags are not long and very often
it is noticeable.
Also scrolling the web pages is quite laggy. It just cant scroll smoothly. And again, the
lag is not any huge but it is visible. Especially on facebook for example which laggs
during every scroll.
Otherwise I really like this tablet, but this is something that bothers me. So I have read
nearly every disscusion and review and because many people wrote that the tablet is
mostly smooth I want to ask for your advice.
What is your experience? How does your device perform? And is the problem I described
a reason for reclamation?
Thank you!

A couple of things worth trying:
1. Try a different launcher. I use Nova, and it is very smooth on my XTZ
2. Update the firmware. You might also be experiencing touch screen over-sensitivity. There was a recent firmware update on my XTZ (US 16GB wifi only). The update made scrolling a lot smoother for me.

Thanks for tips. Unfortunately according to my settings I have the latest updates so it is not the problem.
I am wondering how smooth is your device? I have nothing to compare it with so maybe it is not unusual
to have those lags. But as it is inconvenient for using and most reviewers said it was all smooth I wanted
to ask about it.

Sorry to hear about the lagginess.
I've had my XTZ for almost a month now and have not noticed any lagginess. But as soon as I got it, I replaced the stock Xperia launcher with Nova Launcher Prime because (a) I use Nova on my other phones and tablets and (b) there were a lot of comments from other users that the stock launcher could get laggy. There's a free version of Nova you might want to try out, and the process of switching is completely reversible and painless (I use an app called Home Manager).
My main issue with the tablet initially was with screen sensitivity. It gave the impression of my finger skipping over the screen as if on account of friction. Swipes were not smooth. But the OTA update to firmware 370 helped immensely.
Other things you might consider. (a) See what's running in the background; I generally have very little running in the background, including apps that might generate notifications. (b) Uninstalling bloatware when possible.
The XTZ compares favorably, for me at least, with my other handhelds: Galaxy Note phone, Nexus 7 and iPad 2 (which I gave to my father when I got the XTZ
Now that I think of it, the one thing that pretty much guarantees that my XTZ will be laggy is background app updates. But this is true for all my handhelds. Do you have apps updating automatically in the background?
Good luck!

I personally think this is a firmware issue. So hopefully when 4.2.2 comes out (which i do hope is soon) will fix it. For the time being, you can use nova launcher which makes swiping around the tablet smooth.
The new firmware has improved the stock launcher abit but theres still more room to improve.
Heres hoping to an update soon
For web browsing, try dolphin. Its much smoother then the jerky chrome that comes with the tablet.

Thanks again.
Dolphin browser is truly a little bit faster than google.
But my problem is still slightly visible. I will try to
describe it more specifically because it may not
be unusual as I thought and it may be on every
device.
So what it basically does is when you scroll and
on a web page with a picture or normally more
pictures it sometimes kind a jump a little bit
forward. Usually over the picture you are scrolling.
It is mostly when you scroll fast and the scrolling
goes down.
Please tell me now if you also have it?
Because even when I ended all my background it
was still there.
Yes, it happens. Yes, it happens on any device. Get over it. It's impossible to scroll all javascript- and picture-heavy web pages without some stutter on devices with such weak processors. For that you need "real" CPUs.
If OTA updates show nothing, try connecting your tablet to PC Companion. The LTE version doesn't have OTA updates, but the 253 build is available via PC Companion. Not sure about Wifi version though.
