I've been using an iPhone 4 (not 4S) for the last few days, and while there's very little I like about it, I've got to say, I'm incredibly disappointed that Chrome on iOS using 3G loads heavy pages faster than my Rezound on LTE. The rendering is just that much faster--it appears the bottleneck really isn't bandwidth, but GPU? Even with ICS, which was supposed to improve hardware acceleration.

Good question, I'll give that a try for comparison. There's simply no way for bandwidth to be the problem though, I pretty routinely hit 35mbps on LTE around here.

Alotta people don't know buut the iPhone has hardware that allows fast webpage loadtimes. And also, run the test again and look on the top left corner of the iPhone and you'll notice its still loading the webpage even though it looks already done. It tricks ya.

True. Apple has tons of tricks it uses to make things seem faster on the iphone.
example: opening apps first shows a screenshot of when it last was used, it doesn't load that fast. if you move fast enough you can notice its stuck/laggy even though it seems it loaded instantly.

So, somewhat curiously, it's much more equal on wifi, which makes me curious about LTE. And I did notice that iOS Chrome seems to get stuck occasionally loading ads, where AdFree Android ensures they never load on my Rezound.
On mobile websites the Rezound seemed much quicker, on full-content sites the iPhone seemed to have a bit of an advantage still. But not nearly as big a one as on mobile data.

I just did a side by side test with my Rezound running Chrome vs a friend's iPhone 4 (no S) running its stock browser, and the Rezound absolutely trounced the iPhone in page loading speed, but the iPhone pretty much destroyed the Rezound in scrolling speed and responsiveness...
Honestly, Chrome has had some weird issues on my phone. Even though it just came out of "beta", it still seems very buggy on my phone...

Chrome on my iPad is nice. Its much better than safari. The only thing I miss is.the bookmark bar tabs

Is it that important? I don't think I even use bookmarks anymore in Chrome. It knows the website i want to go to usually with no more than two/three keystrokes in the url window.

Just because you can do it doesn't mean it isn't for other people. I have maybe 50+ bookmarks. I like being able to 1 click and open folders of bookmarks rather than typing every website in the folder one by one.

I am new to Android and coming from a 3GS.
Really been looking forward to getting on Android and this was the phone I was waiting for.
There's a couple of issues I've noticed I'm really unsure about and seem odd.
- Scrolling (no live wallpaper) if I go to an email with a bunch of pictures, or an app such as tweetdeck, the scrolling on the Atrix is really poor. Not smooth, very blocky etc… I do the exact same thing on my 3GS and it's smooth as can be. Is this an Android issue? This seems really odd and annoying…
- Mobile browser rendering. For example I bring up Techcrunch, renders perfectly in my 3GS, in the Atrix the text is too small and poorly formatted (if I increase size it's too big), the page border goes off the screen etc.. I've tried Opera, not much better. Holding the same page side by side my 3GS is far more readable than my new Atrix. That is not making me happy…
Any ideas on this guys? I'll note I am new to Android so if you want to point me to a 'read this' for tips on Android that'd be understandable.
But I'm somewhat disappointed that for extremely common functions the usability *appears* to me (after 24hrs) inferior to my old iPhone…

(I spent many years on Windows Mobile, and had a love hate relationship with it, maybe a bit unfair to say this soon, but starting to already see some parallels: great OS, super powerful and customizable but still not nailed on the usability front...)

There is no pinch to zoom in mobile view of webpages. So if you go to cnn.com, its mobile page, m.cnn.com will come up and there will be no pinch to zoom. But at the bottom of the mobile page if you click on full site, the full site will come up and there you can use pinch to zoom. Hope this helps.
give dolphin browser a try, (will add pinch to zoom)
also try selecting "fit web page to screen" and that should take care of your issues as far as too wide goes. 2.3 is slated to release for this phone so patience maybe a virtue here.

No pinch to zoom? You must be on a mobile site as they generally don't support pinch to zoom as they don't need it. Web sites certainly do pinch zoom very smoothly.

You're kidding right? This phone has full multitouch support, including the webkit browser. Go into google maps and try multitouch/pinch zooming there, if it still doesnt work then your phone is broken.. .or you're just "holding it wrong"
I do notice quite a few apps do not fit the screen. Some, off the top of my head are OnStar and Groupon. The default browser seems to be off as well, if you go to Adobe.com, it comes out all screwed up.
For the time being, I'm using Mobile FireFox. Even though you cannot get the Flash Player Add-On for it yet, at least the pages look somewhat decent.
for the iOS users having trouble with the browser, I highly suggest dolphin. Pages render nicely for me, pinch to zoom and overall fluid. The stock browser is good but it can be better.

IMHO, these are issues of Android OS, not necessarily the phone (emphasis on IMHO). Keep in mind, I had an iPhone 3G for 1.5 years and then a Nexus One for almost a year. I now have the Motorola Atrix. The scrolling is better on the Atrix than the N1, but still not like my iPhone 3G was on iOS 3.0. All the same applies to the web browser too. I do use Dolphin HD Browser, but at full zoom on a standard (non-mobile) page, the text looks "pixelated" on this Atrix.
I still really like this phone!

Get the HTC Inspire, smooth as butter. Looking like I made the right choice getting it instead of the Atrix, plus I saved $100.

Pinch to zoom worked fine for me in everything EXCEPT the browser. I tried a bunch of different websites and attempted to go to full version although that failed a bunch of times. Firefox mobile works flawlessly so I'd say problem solved for me. I also get sync which is nice anyway.

Googling around showed me that i'm not the only one seeing rather choppy web browsing experience. Zooming in and out, scrolling, etc.... Opera seems to eliminate some of those issues, but wouldn't you think this quad-core beast should perform better than an older dual core iPad2?
Whats your take?

If I pay attention, I might notice that the stock browser isn't perfectly smooth. However, in terms of just using the thing, I'm finding it perfectly fine. I think Google could certainly tighten things up a bit, but it's nothing I'd feel the need to complain about.
Google plans on merging "Browser" with Chrome, so it will get better.

Dolphin wasn't too much better...Opera was the most dramatic improvement for some reason.
What about Force 2D HW Rendering switch thingie under developer's options? Any ideas if that would improve anything? didn't seem to for me, but i'm not sure if it supposed to.

browsing is definitely choppy, noticed it switching from using my moms ipad for a week, also my homepage tarted bugging out about an hour ago,whenever i tiuched the menu icon in the lower right corner half the screen would turn black first then it would show the menu and as far as typing goes ipad>TFP ipad is wayyyyyy easier to type on also video quality is bettr on ipad, gaming is obviously better on TFP, TFP is seriously not all its cracked up to be

Kind of concerned about the build quality posts. How bad are the charging ports? The glossy plastic not snapping down in all 4 corners?
i havent had any issues yet, it snaps down great and the browser works fine, even integrates with chrome very well. the multitasker seems alright so far. probably only a issue for something you have like 6 tasks back.
the point is if you look for a problem there will be a problem
I have had a bunch of things open at once and not really run into this issue yet.

Being a recent webOS refugee, I'm used to a certain level of multitasking. I can say it isn't great, most apps refresh when switching back to them in an incredibly annoying fashion. Otherwise while not quite webOS level, the multitasking works well enough.
minor multitasking issue on evo 4g lte
The only real multitasking issue I have run into is that Rhapsody will stop if you launch another app. I think this is more app related because google play music and the built in music player work fine with other apps running. I'm thinking this is an app issue that can hopefully be fixed with an update.
My apps seem to almost always reload when returning to them (even if it's only been several seconds.
I notice it most when using the tapatalk app, because I'm constantly losing my place.
My E4GT was much better at multitasking!

All of us webOS refugees will never be satisfied with multitasking unless someone comes out with a card system like webOS. It was the perfect UI with a few software short comings and huge hardware short comings(that's where it really failed). Anyway, the LTEVO is the closest I've seen to the card system on webOS except for the reloading issue. A few software fixes will make this phone even better.

Yeah, the EVO LTE is decently close except the annoying refreshes, which practically eliminate all the benefit of multitasking in the first place. It would also be nice if the fake cards shifted through one at a time rather than advancing all the way when scrolling between them.
So I don't mind my phones browsing experience but anytime I get anywhere near an I-Device my mind is blown by how freakin smooth their browser experience. I don't mind my Evo's interface and all that but wow, when I am looking at a general web page in any browser (Dolphin HD beta, Stock, Firefox, Chrome) its NIGHT AND DAY and it drives me nuts. Why the F*& can't it be smoother? My phone is beast but a desktop style web page with a few pics makes the whole experience choppy as hell. Sure I can still get around but double tap to zoom and text reflowing is just poor. Anyone have a better solution? Love everything about my E4GLTE but this makes me mad on a daily basis.

Google "apple ui graphics accelerated" and there's a few articles at the top that you might find interesting.
I've not seen an issue yet...
The thing that kills the browsing experience for me is how chrome beta refreshes the page whenever I switch to another app. I went into the settings to get the pages pre rendered but everything still refreshes. Any ideas about that?

So I just got my nexus today and wanted to reserve judgment for a couple of days but couldn't help myself, mostly because I'm looking for answers. Out of the box I actually prefer the materials used for the nexus. The back has more grip to it but still manages to feel premium. The speaker grills are deceiving because sound only plays From the very top of them. The nexus is wider so it might just take some getting used to but for the time being it is a bit awkward to hold in landscape orientation. Watching movies that are intended to be in high def are actually sharper looking on the iPad than they are on the nexus. Both YouTube and Netflix movies. These are less complaints and more just differences I noticed
...That said my real gripe is with the chrome browser because this is what I find myself doing with the tab most frequently. Safari and even chrome on the iPad were buttery experiences. Even chrome on my note 2 is fantastic but for whatever reason chrome on the nexus 10 gives me unbearable load times, and once its loaded scrolling up and down web pages is painfully choppy and basically has a load time of its' own. I'm wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me as far as the browser goes and what their solution was. I was going to root and flash cm10 but would like to stay in rooted so that I can use my time Warner Tv app. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate your help thanks.
Try a custom ROM / custom kernel combination. I'm currently on AOKP [PUB] / Trinity Ten and have nothing but smooth performance across all my apps, good battery life, etc. Also make sure you use a youtube app that can support HD. You might have better results with the above. YMMV

Get the aosp browser on there. Its butter smooth. Also go to developer options and turn on force 2d rendering.

Alot of custom roms have it pre-installed. Otherwise search for a thread here that will show you how to download and install it.

Here's the thing with iPad browser compared to Android; Apple values UX above everything else, so as soon as you touch your finger to the screen, iOS devices stop EVERYTHING and handle the scrolling process exclusively making it nice and smooth. When using Safari, for example, if the page is half-loaded and you touch the screen and start scrolling, iOS stops the page from loading and will not load anything more until you release the screen. Sure, that gives wonderfully smooth scrolling, but it means it won't finish loading the page until you stop scrolling...
On Android, however, while Project Butter does raise the priority of the surfaceflinger and HWComposer, the pages still load when scrolling. On sections of the page that have already loaded it should be just as smooth, however if you scroll to a section that needs to be loaded, Android browsers will all load this section of the page while still scrolling, resulting in a small amount of jutteriness as the scrolling, rendering and loading processes fight for CPU priority. It's getting better as the OS slowly makes better use of multiple cores, but that's the basic jist of it.
This is all paraphrased from an Android development engineer as background explanation of Project Butter and iOS vs Android scrolling experience. (sorry if this is explaining what you already know, I figure the info could be useful to other people as well)
Anyway, as for Chrome vs other browsers, I personally HATE Chrome for Android (it messes up the rendering of lots of sites, only renders at quarter native resolution and loads mobile phone versions of sites by default), and so I use Dolphin Beta instead, which is incredibly smooth and fluid for my uses!

If the replacement has the same issue ill hang onto the ipad. Maybe get an up touchpad

My dads got an up touchpad that I put jellybean on and that thing is having absolutely no issues. This isn't an android issue this is definitely a nexus 10 issue. Every other device in the house connects flawlessly but the nexus could take a 30 seconds to google something and a minute to load theverge.com. I think I'll get it replaced. If the replacement has the same issue ill hang onto the ipad. Maybe get an up touchpad

Disable Wifi power saver. My wife has an ipad 4 and she loves my Nexus 10. Every time I turn around she is using it. Wouldn't be a problem if I enjoyed using her Ipad 4 but I don't like it. I tell her she should have got one, but she says: " I don't want to mess with it, I just want to take it out of the box and use it." Whereas I like to play with settings, tweak, and flash different ROMS. I like to customize my experience. Doesn't sound like android is for you.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Firefox will solve your problems perfectly. Its bloody fast and renders just as well as chrome. No need to root or anything, just grab from the play store and you're done. This is assuming you don't have a hardware defect. FYI, Chrome was unusually slow for me as well, but I haven't bothered to try again since using Firefox.
I would also suggest using something like the speedtest app while standing next to your router and making sure all other devices/computers are turned off - if that app is being slow under these conditions it may in fact be a hardware problem.

WiFi is always a PIA but there is no issue specific to N10's, in fact I can get better throughput using it than any other I've ever owned...including my iPad 3.
Its important to note that WiFi is a protocol, not a specific product. Consequently there are many implementations, from many different parties. Not all implementations are compatable unfortunately.
Best advice I can give is to turn any 'speed boost' modes off, ditto using a wider frequency band. Turn any compatability modes available on. If all else fails, try a different router. If you're getting issues with all routers, you may have a fault with your device.

I totally agree with you. Eventhough I do not have an iPad to compare with the first surprise I had with my N10 was how much faster it was than my old Galaxy P1000, both using the same N only network/router. Web pages almost exploded onto the screen with the N10. My router is a ASUS RT-N16 using the latest Tomato-USB firmware, it is not even a dual-band router.
