Seriously? I'm the first? come on... gotta be some devs out there with this phone!
OK, so, let me ask this... how much of the Atrix stuff will work with this phone? I mean, if I have to go more than a few hours without my CM7 I'm gonna get grumpy!
OK, mostly I want the webtop through hdmi hack, but CM7 is right there with it.
How about starting the Motorola Photon 4G channel boyz!?

Then you shouldnt have bought the Photon. Despite having similar hardware, they're still completely different phones. We dont even have CM7 on the Atrix yet.
And even if we did, and it were a quick port to the Photon, it doesnt matter because the Photon still has a locked bootloader. Right now, its not entirely clear if the Atrix was a one-off or if Motorola has genuinely had a change of heart regarding their bootloader policy.
Hope you like Motoblur. As for the webtop hack, I'm sure you'll get that shortly after root.
How can you ask for CM7 when the Atrix doesn't have it?
Coming into the Atrix section seeming like you deserve something is not the way to act.
Woah, woah!
Hold your horses.
The Atrix has been out for half a year, and we still dont have CM7 yet, despite having an unlocked bootloader.
The Photon isn't even officially available yet, and you want what we've been waiting for?
Give it time.
You don't even have a thread for the Photon yet...

Sorry guys, guess I was a bit excited and didn't think about hurting your feelings. :-/
I probably WILL try some of the Atrix hacks, why not?
The Atrix has a locked bootloader, and no sign of being unlocked... however, the Photon will have it's unlocked in August, I hear. That's how I can suggest we start work on CM7. Or CM8?
Anyway, I've had some time to play with it more - really not so bad in its stock form, I have to say. I wish it had the finger scanner though.

The atrix has already been unlocked. CM7 for the atrix is already in the alpha stage. Trying atrix hacks on the Photon sounds like a great way to brick your phone since they are different phones.

have you not read anything about the atrix these past few months? Coming on the forum of a device that isn't yours and demanding CM7 is not the way to get it.
First, you have a locked bootloader. Second, where did you hear you would be unlocked in august?
Third, please don't try these Atrix hacks. that's asking for something bad to happen

Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about.
Atrix had an unlocked bootloader for one month now. Two days ago GB kernel source for Atrix was released,- meaning new roms will start flooding in like there's no tomorrow. CM7 is already in alpha release state at the moment. But even before that we had a working CWM. And even before we had 2nd-init and pseudo roms.
So far, Photon has absolutely nothing, meaning you can't even theme your phone. I bet it will be at least half a year before you start having any roms.
You trust Motorola when they say they will unlock Photon? LOOL.
Motorola promised to unlock Atrix with the gingerbread update, but as always failed to deliver. Thanks to the devs for finding the way to unlock it.
Don't get me wrong, I support Android community in general and would love for Photon to succeed - having CM7, bootloader unlock, etc. But your phone hasn't been officially released yet.
Like I said, even if Moto keep their word, you will be on stock rom at least for a couple of months until the first mods appear.
And if I were you I woudln't try flashing Atrix stuff if you don't want a 600$ ? brick.
How's the phone treating you?

Now what? How about, go find your own forum
Seriously though...Atrix has an unlocked bootloader. CM7 isn't something a random person can just decide to work on. And there is no CM8 yet.
Now, run along.
SMH......should've gotten an Atrix.
But why would you get a phone without doing research on it??? Or at least compare it to other phones so you could get the best buy, future proof(cause u don't wanna have to buy a different phone within 3 months), and most of all, a phone that will fit your needs.
Haha this n00b obviously hasn't read anything in this section of xda. Have fun bricking your photon with atrix hacks and best of luck getting CM anything.

From all the research iv done the photon in the middle betwen atrix and bionic im willing to bet it pretty darn similar to the atrix. but thats my 2 cents

It's still different. It doesn't matter what it's between. It's a totally different device. Sure, some things could be used. But flashing between phones is a bad idea.
Hi, im an owner of Samsung Epic 4G. Im grateful for XDA developers and CM for supporting Samsung Epic. But now, it getting old and Im looking in getting used Motorola Photon for faster user experience and longer battery life. I have some questions for this forum. I recalled somewhere that if you unlocked the bootloader, it will break 4G. Not sure if they got it working now. Second, I see some threads that CM9 will support this device. Is that true that moto photon devs working on it. Thank for taking ur time to answer my few questions! I hope Motorola Photon will exceed my exception!

Ya, unlocking the bootloader does break 4g, and we don't have a workaround.
Cm9 doesn't officially support the photon but we do have a wonderful cm9 kang that I'm running right now. Battery life is good, and pretty much everything works aside from some small things. I
Also, it requires an unlocked bootloader.

There are obviously many devs spending countless hours to extract the maximum benefit from the hardware. Unfortunately Sprint & Motorola forces the enthusiast to cripple network performance as the price for experimenting.
I was naive and uneducated and bought the Photon before I realized this limitation. This is the first Android device I'be owned with a locked bootloader. It is an unusual feeling. /whiner

As trcurren mentions, it is possible to root without unlocking. You'll probably want to go to a Sprint store and take some time to try to setup the Photon with stuff you're likely to want if you choose to buy one.
You may not be that particular. For the last 18 months, I had always run Cyanogenmod on my devices, so that is the user experience I had come to expect. It's a great phone but, for example, when the last four devices I had on Cyanogenmod, I could setup the home screen with Launcher Go Pro in a very particular way. With the Photon, I can't quite get there.
You may end up being very, very happy. Just investigate and dive in an informed buyer.
Best regards,

Well, it either this or Sprint galaxy SII. Motorola Photon is cheaper and it have longer battery life than Galaxy SII.
So I recently purchased the Electrify from US cellular, and it's running 2.3.5.
My first question is, aside from the 4g capability, is there any difference between the Photon and Electrify? Any difference that would be important to things such as rooting/roms?
And then....Can anyone please link me to a decent root guide for the electrify/photon?
Oh, and can i get some suggestions from some fellow photon owners, what do you suggest doing to the electrify after its rooted? Any great roms suggested?
Thanks a ton guys! Any help is appreciated!
Plenty of views and no response...wonderful
only i know: The photon is the worst phone for gsm users
Rooting won't do a lick of good for playing with ROMs. You need an unlocked bootloader for that. Which you can't get with 2.3.5. I have the same (US Cellular Electrify that came with 2.3.5).
You probably can root it, but I haven't seen a straightforward guide that is confirmed working for the Electrify, and I don't trust guides for the Photon that are not confirmed to work for the Electrify as well.
Once rooted, you can grant apps "superuser" (or in Linux terms "su") permission, which lets apps do things the Android system wasn't really intended to let apps do. Such as taking screenshots. Simple thing, but you need root for it. Or blocking ads -- these all work by changing the HOSTS file, but it's effective enough. The best root app by far is Titanium Backup. You can remove all the bloatware, back up your apps (and their data!), and some other cool things.
I don't feel like rooting is really necessary on our phones, but I am curious about it.

Yeah i feel the same way, add me man, and if ya find anything, let me know Hopefully we can help each other out....I got really into messin with ROM's and flashin **** back in the day with the original droids, and things have REALLY changed since then ha
Don't need Titanium to remove Blur/Bloat, just send me a copy of a full bloat /data/app folder and I'll add the final entries to the universal deblur/debloat script.
FYI - I got a 2.3.5 Electrify last week, the Photon Torpedo root method works fine.
Slightly miffed, since I thought I was getting a Photon instead, and bought the phone in part because I was sick of the RAZR's locked bootloader, but whatchagonnado. Hardware is lovely, battery life is good, and this version of Blur is much less intrusive than the RAZR's.

Crispytoast, add you on what; and how? I would be glad to help in any way once I learn things but right now I am at square one. My first and previous phone was a Samsung Acclaim (Sprint people, think Moment) and I rooted and ROM'd it with help from the good folks over at SDX, and was able to pass on knowledge and help a couple people, but I'm not a modded or programmer of any kind. I built my computer and the one before it, but otherwise my tech level is pretty moderate. I know a lot more than your average novice, but I'm no guru. Still, I will help where I can.
Lokifish, didn't you get all that already, from an Electrify owner? If not, I would be happy to help, just walk me through the steps to do so or point me in the right direction, and I'll get on it when I get home, get sleep, and get coffee, haha.
And I just want Titanium for backups for now, especially since I have a pro license. ;-)
Onslaught, how did you get an Electrify at Sprint? They are the same device except it's called Electrify at US Cellular and Photon at Sprint... and Photon adds the WiMax (4G) chip... and Photon came first. If you got an Electrify you got it at US Cellular. Isn't that correct?

I cant see what there is to gain by unlocking and installing a rom that only works on an unlocked phone. Why should I give up 4g? Wish I knew how to make my own rom.
Questions should be in Q&A or general, but to answer your question, not everyone lives in a wimax area so what is the point of 4g when there is no signal to use?

Since I also live in a 4g area I'm not willing to give up my 4g by staying perm unlocked. Ive been reading and learning and am testing a locked rom just adding the tweaks hope to be ready in a few days.
I dont live in a 4g area, but most of my daylight time is in a 4g area and I use it. Lets face it! We have to pay for it. It should work. There is no way to compromise for me to give up 4g for some of the custom roms out there. I had an Evo before my Photon and I will say that when the time comes I will ditch this Photon and get a Samsung or HTC phone. Shame on Motorola for locking down their phones. Even the company I work for has given up on motorola and went to other radio manufacturers. It just seem there are more people developing on HTC and Samsung for the very reason that they are "OPEN" and not locked down.

I understand what you mean about htc being more locked down...that is why htc was second in my choices of my next phone. But I know that whatever man can lock down can be unlocked. It just take the desire too do it. If I was more of a developer and more advanced in this particular field I could spend more time working on it. But I am still learning and trying to figure it all out.
But thanks for your observations, and you developmental skills. We all appreciate it.
Back to the subject... what advantages do an unlocked bootloader with no 4G have over a locked bootloader with 4G.. rocko's rom is pretty nice and extremely smooth and he achieved that with a locked bootloader. In the defense of unlocking, I don't remember when was the last time I wasn't on a ICS base rom. I have full 4g in my area and everywhere I have to go to work. but I like customizability and choices. sprint 3g is fast as **** here so I don't miss 4g at all. I don't think I've even run a kernel that can't be overclocked to 1.4 in a while also... so, I stay unlocked. Also, Rocko's roms are sweet.. locked or unlocked thanks for all the hard work...

(if this affects my chances of ever getting dev status I'm not sure if I care as I've been waiting for almost a year)
Almost every day there's a "I can't find it" thread or post for a file that I personally hosted. Where can these files be found? In a STICKIED thread that I try to maintain and keep up to date. This leads me to believe that the money spent hosting and the work involved in the stickied thread is ignored and unappreciated by many.
People are still flashing 2.3.5electrify pudding on photons after it has been said many times "don't do it". Again this goes back to the previous paragraph. I'm now to the point that if you bork your phone considering that the information is obviously available, you deserve it.
Nobody is developing for locked? Since when? There's three locked ROM's/mods that I know of right now without looking. Rocko Locked to start, which I have said is a bloody good ROM for those that want eyecandy. Imperium Locked is for those that want a barebones ROM that was updated less than a week ago. Here's a surprise for folks. The Deblur/Debloat Script is an ODEXED version of Imperium Locked without the theme change! How many Locked ROMs do you want, or is it that reading and searching are to much of a bother.
Other annoying things are "I don't like the way it looks" complaints and the general lack of "thanks" or support. If you don't like the way a ROM looks then flash a theme. That's what they are there for. If you can't be bothered to flash a theme (and don't say there are none) then don't flash anything. Developing takes effort, time and money. If you are not developing, hitting the "thanks" button or donating then you are leeching, plain and simple.
Also. Why is this thread in the development section? I don't see any development work posted.
[end of rant]
Photon Locked vs unlocked;
Locked ROMs give you the benefit of being very close to the stock base in many cases. Things like PRL and profile updates work and in some cases you can choose to accept an OTA update with little to no issues. You also loose fewer stock features with locked like 4G. The drawback is that battery life is shorter, it runs slower and fine tuning is almost impossible.
Unlocked ROM's give you more choice and greater flexibility with things like full themes, kernels and overclocking/undervolting. It then becomes a choice of need vs want. My daily is my own ROM that is underclocked to 750MhZ single core and NOT undervolted. With the tuning of profiles, my battery fall off is 1% every three hours, video playback is around six hours and during a call my phone never breaks 456MhZ. In short, battery life is insane with a standby mode of 10 days before I get a low battery prompt. This cannot be done with locked. The only thing I loose is 4G but considering the impact 4G has on battery life I can actually transfer more data than if I did have 4G just at a slower rate.
If LTE proves to be more battery friendly then I may change my position but for now I personally choose flexibility and the ability to fine tune over 4G any day.
The DeBlur tool is awesome. I just had to flash back because Im going to participate in the SOAK if I get chosen. Everyone should run the DeBlur tool.
So as I understand it, the Photon has drivers issues which is why we dont have a port of for instant a droid bionic version of moto ICS, or moto jellybean. I am wondering what we need to get a kernel going. If this happened this would open up the possibility for doing webtop on a non stock rom.(Which I really would love cm 10.1 with ubuntop) I have been using linux for many years and am familiar with compiling and modifying kernels and packages I am just still new with android I came from the Epic 4G. I just would like to be pointed in the right direction or maybe someone who already makes kernels has attempted this and we could work together.
Thanks for your time.
You need source from Motorola and whatever company it was that Apple bought. You can try the Compendium thread for kernel links but as of now a new kernel is highly unlikely.
So then maybe we should look into writing our own? I mean if they can do it why can't we?

There's a thread over in the Atrix 4G forums where some people are working on a port from the Galaxy R kernel. You may want to follow that thread and offer your assistence there, because chances are that any progress that benefits the Atrix will benefit the Photon in the long run.

In theory that is sound, but the Atrix has a much newer kernel version than ours from the start (not sure how that happened with our device being more recent release). If you're planning to try, make sure that you have device protection or a good number of devices to work with....they've already hard bricked one or two from what I had seen.
What drivers are required, and I assume you mean for a 3.x kernel?

Unless you want to rev-eng a couple of parts of the kernel to make the GalaxyR kernel exaclty compatible with the Photon, you won't be able to use the stuff. Sorry.

Yeah, he said he had something special for us, but never told us what it was.

maybe, jut maybe some day it will be leaked.
after the screwing Moto gave us he might as well post it. wtf are they gonna do? lock our damn phones?
My guess is it just never panned out and the guy didn't want to disappoint us. This was around the time of the Atrix leak, and that never amounted to anything, and a bunch of people got let down. It's my theory, which is far from concrete, that the leak included Photon files as well, that also never amounted to anything, but less was said here, so fewer people will be let down. I'm personally not worried. Come whatever may. My phone may not be able to do MMS or camcorder, or run Chrome or Swiftkey Flow, but I like it. It does the things I want it to. And it looks sexy as hell. I'd appreciate this mystery kernel or whatever, but I'm not gonna lose sleep if some mad scientist is holding out. Not saying that's what cybik is (I actually don't know much about him), just saying neither of the two extremes affect me much. And they shouldn't affect y'all either. If you're locked I'm sorry, that sucks, so is my brother, but you can run Holo Launcher/Locker and use either utter!, Maluuba, or Dragon Go! for voice commands/personal assistant, Notification Toggle for, well, the toggles, and Dolphin for your browser, and that puts you fairly close to Android 4. Motoblur can't keep a WiFi lock to save its life, but there are apps for that... I'm trying to test one on my wife's phone, but I'm not getting very good data from it. If you're unlocked, you have a lot of good choices as it is.
I may be an Atrix owner, but if the 2.6.39.4 kernel that is being dev'd for the Atrix is a success, couldn't you take the post-dev'd 2.6.39.4 kernel and port it to the Photon?
