I’ve been lurking here on XDA for over a year but I think this will be my first post. My wife preordered the prime for me for Christmas from Best Buy in November and I received it on December 27th. I also managed to get a dock from Newegg so I have both. I’ve had no real problems with mine other than a spot on the glass that presses down to the right of where the charger plugs in. I have been very happy with the device otherwise.
I was looking forward to getting ICS on the 12th and was surprised to get the prompt that an update was available a few days early. The tablet downloaded the update on its own, and then began prompting me to install it. But after hearing about earlier problems with the Honeycomb OTA updates I decided to check XDA first and see if anyone was having issues. And, well, you guys know the rest.
So, my question is this. My tablet has already downloaded the ICS update and keeps prompting me to install it, but I have been exiting out of it by hitting the back arrow instead of postponing it, so I have managed to not install ICS. I am kind of terrified to. What I am wondering is if ASUS releases a new (fixed) OTA update of ICS or other updates in the future will I be able to receive them since I have not installed this one? Should I go ahead and take my chances installing it or should I continue to stick with Honeycomb and wait? Thanks for reading.
I know my phone got 2 OTAs from Verizon/LG. Shipping firmware was V4, next was V6 and then V7.
You could only root on V4 so people weren't updating to V6 and we locked it out via the ROM. When V7 came it was for GingerBread so of course everyone wanted it. For us to get the V7 update we first had to update to V6 and then update to V7. Idk if the same will be true for the Prime especially in this case since this update has been pulled (I think). But it's something to go off of.
What issues are you talking about?
There were issues with people that had rooted trying to update to ICS but besides that I haven't seen too many issues.
ICS runs great, much better than HC, on my Prime.

Locking up and rebooting after ICS
Diagonal flickering screen
Most people dont have issues.
If something were to happen you always have the warranty.
ICS is worth the minute risk of having to RMA.

Are you tired of the constant updates lately? I didn't know if it would fix my prime or break it further I was just hoping for the best with 13,14, and 15. I was also hoping someone could hack the unlock key so I could still have my warranty. Well yesterday I got irritated and decided to unlock. The entire time I had second thoughts because I am unsure if this tablet will last a year without breaking lol, so I clicked through as fast as I could (after reading all the unlock ops.) Well as soon as I was unlocked I felt a whole lot better about my prime. Maybe I have just lost faith in Asus, I don't know but as soon as I loaded virtuous I felt more secure about my purchase. I guess I have finally come to the conclusion that Asus ISNT going to have a miracle fix for the prime that fixes all the problems and after asking someone through PM twice for a refund since I was dissatisfied with the product (only to get no response what so ever..) I decided I would make the best of what I have and stop worrying.
I don't know how to explain it but now that my device is unlocked all of my uncertainties are gone. I will keep this device for the next year or so and crack flash like there's no tomorrow!
If you are undecided on unlocking I say go for it. (Assuming you read the tutorials!!) I did and I am much happier.

what isseues did you have in each firmware ?
and what`s your sn ?
Reboots, bad wifi range, zero GPS, screen flickering, lag in the UI, bad battery life. Some of these issues would come and go depending on the update.
C10 serial.

I have a C10 also, but with none of the issues you have mentioned other than the gps being totally useless. I'm not that bothered as i don't really need it but it does take the shine off an otherwise excellent product.
Could you let me know if installing a custom rom has made any improvement to your gps performance.
Cheers
Interesting, i was to on the fence about unlocking. I returned my Prime the other day. I've never had wifi probs on any of mine. Just got fed up with random reboot and YouTube glitches and browser freezing. One had dead pixels and light bleed.
Might have to pick up another today. Why not make it 5 lol.

let me know how you like the virtuous rom. how is the battery life compared to stock? how is the overall speed of device now in your opinion? have you come across any shortcomings on the rom yet? I'm on the fence also but still holding on. I will at least wait till I see more roms. plus I'm really looking for a rom to bring 1.8-2.0Ghz+ speeds. then I might jump the gun if its stable and performs very well.
I think I know the feeling you talking about. its a feeling like you have more control now over the fate of your device now that you can flash new roms at will. did you use rom manager to install official updated CMW or did you use the unofficial method? or the all in one method with viperprimetime 4.5?
glad to hear you feeling more confident about device now that you have the power..lol

This. Yes more control over its fate lol. I tried to use rom manager but it wouldn't work for me. I did use vipers mod to unlock and install cmw. Virtuous is great, very stock feeling and buttery smooth. Ill let you know about the battery after a week or so of testing. I do like the 1.6 ghz overclock being the new performance mode. No screen flicker anymore either! It does seem very stable in the few hours I've tested it. Will update when I can.
Edit: GPS is just as dead as before zero birds.

I won't get the fuzzy feeling until I can unbrick with nvflash, like with my phone (only not nvflash lol)
But I absolutely understand! 20 minutes after I picked up my phone from the Post Office, it was running custom ROMs (without voiding warranty... bah!). 10 minutes after I picked up my Prime it was rooted
Until then I'm still kind of sitting on a sharp edge with the Prime.

Is nvflash an Asus thing or Nvidia? I seen a post asking for it from Asus but are they the right people to ask?

*EDIT: see lol, figured I was wrong. I was mistaken, but it is what will allow us to recover from some s/w bricking.
di11igaf said:
Its strictly a nvidia program supplied by them. I have a version of nvflash for 'Linux for tegra' that supports tegra 3. Problem is, asus's half ass unlock does not allow us to use it even though it could recover what right now would be a hard brick.

I'm in the exact boat you are, C1 and no issues besides GPS. Just solved that today with GPS over bluetooth pairing with my Nexus. Ive got no need to unlock with Voodoo rootkeeper, haven't had any issue with Asus' OTA's (.13 had the battery issue but it disappeared for me in .14) and if they want to provide me with frequent updates- I'll take em. To each his own I guess.

Definitely, I'm glad your having great luck with your prime! As far as battery life on vitreous rom, it seems VERY solid. Still no concrete numbers but its been on for about 12 hours with about 5 hours of usage and I have 68% battery. I've ran several benchmarks during this time as well. Seems quite a bit better!
Edit: by the way, I am in no way hating on the prime. I was so excited when I got it (one of bestbuys first batches!!!) But I've just had more problems than is normally acceptable even from a new product. I love my prime so much I'm just disappointed with a few critical features and was hoping Asus could somehow fix these issues. I am a HUGE techie and even though I can get about 27-32 mbs from my prime upstairs, all my other devices get a solid 42 mbs which makes me sad face! Lmao.

I had the same feeling as the OP, except it was the first day the unlock tool came out.
I had wholly intended on unlocking it right away.
I also love experimenting, learning and tinkering with this, so I've flashed and reflashed about 100 things on my prime so far, and I could not ask for anything more

Just got my update just now...my prime is the TW version =)
Here in the UK as well. Finger crossed there are no problems.
Lets see how this turns out. Hopefully for you guys. At work now and I look forward to the comments throughout the day till I get home.
what were the changes/updates?
At a glance, not much is different. Wifi direct is listed, there is a breakdown for battery usage, you can get the notification panel up while the screen is locked and apart from being ver .....21, I have not found anything else.
So far the 1st thing that I've noticed is that artifacting and graphic glitches have been minimized/removed (too early to tell) when pressing the recent apps key and when running certain wallpapers.
The Mass Effect 3 wallpaper would glitch like crazy... running it as a test right now and so far no problems. At work now so no chance to test anything else yet.

I haven't seen any yet and that's with the Mass Effect live wallpaper running which is a good sign.
I thought Face unlock was supposed to come with this update...can anyone confirm? I don't see it under security...

No, I think it was mentioned specifically that it wasn't coming.. at least that was some of the translations posted a week or so back said.
I think the confusion is that they said "face lock isn't ready" and people skimmed the log and saw "face lock" and jumped to the conclusion that it was in the update.
Now I just need a flashable/rooted zip for This!

Hi I've just bought my first android tablet from US. It's running on Ice cream 9.4.2.21.
I may seem like an expert on iphone jailbreak etc but have little knowledge of rooting/unlock etc. If you could point me to the right direction.
Is the rooting method out for this build yet? Which Rom do you recommend for Prime?
Thanks

Looks like we have to downgrade firmware before rooting. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622628
For me the update, while only 24 hours old, has made a world of difference. Gone (so far) is the browser constantly crashing, the random reboots, and the wifi signal dropping randomly. I already loved the Prime, even with those faults, knowing that at some point a ROM or one of the updates would fix those problems. This seems to have done it.
My company is on the verge of purchasing them for all of our consultants, and I had been telling them to wait a bit, I think now I can move forward with the purchase. My question is, has it made the rest of you as happy?
Interesting. What industry are you in? Im in healthcare under IT and theres only 2-3 people with company Tablets ..though they are I-pads =(. I would love to see more tablets bieng productive in the business world and pushed into them as well. THe Prime is good start with the keyboard dock and processing power.
For business consultants wouldn't it be better to have a tablet that has built in data plans? I'm guessing they'd be traveling around a lot, and to assume everyone has available wifi for them is a but presumptuous.
Unless everyone also has a dataplan smartphone for tethering !
For me it has made it much more reliable and stable. I made it through a whole day at school as a laptop replacement. Used Overskreen browser (awesome), pdfs, TED, youtube, gmail, 8tracks, music apps. Everything worked together and it never froze or crashed.
new update has made my prime that much better than the competition.
Better here too, only problem i get is browser lag. Its not totally gone, but its noticeably better to the point where its almost not bothering me now.

Much, much better. Screen tearing completely gone, no random reboots yet and gps is working again. Browser is much better, only get the wait or close message once in a long while.

my prime used to just bob my knob. now it tongues the testes while it bobs the knob. so much better.
am i the only one who had a gmail problem?
i couldn't find anyone having problems with gmail... it would open and i could see the emails... but wouldnt respond to my touch... all i know is the new update fixed that problem... amongst everything else.
After the update I feel it more smooth overall. So I am happy enough with it now that I ordered a leather case for it
They updated the Asus timeline live wallpaper
They added some animation to each of the "scenes" like sun shafts and birds flying toward the sunset one on the Dusk scene.

Browsing seems really smooth now and the Splashtop Streamer works very nice as well. Also we probably got the free 8GB AsusWebstorage. And I am sure there is still lots to find. I'll let you know later
Stability really has improved a lot with this update. My browser would crash QUITE frequently before, and I had a few, albeit not many, random reboots. I've used my Prime quite a bit since the update and I haven't witnessed either of those two things yet. The browser is faster and more responsive now than ever before.
market not connecting
Light browser lag yes, and google play/market is not picking up connection...
I've actually had one reboot since updating. I never had any problems with the previous firmware at all. Hopefully that was a one off..
Prime isn't rooted and hasn't been tinkerer with at all

Definitely has improved my experience. No more screen flickering. Some "wait/close" popups with the browser, but not nearly as many as before. In fact, I don't recall having one at all today. Things seem smoother to me. I look forward to the Prime just getting better and better with future updates.

After update, i have been noticing that leaving the TP off and later when I pick up the TP, it feels a bit warm on the right upper side top. Also notice that the battery has gone down much quicker as well when just turned off. I don't have much installed, as I just got the TP last Saturday.
Maybe I will just do a hard reset.

So far with the new firmware I have had the Prime just shut off once and then refuse to start up until it is plugged into charger.
I do experience the occasional hang up on the stock web browser, but everything else seems to be running smoothly so far.
I am hoping that I no longer experience random reboots or the tablet just shutting off because whenever I do I can't get the tablet to start up again until I plug it into the charger.
Anyone know when the next update is coming for TF201 (Transformer Prime)?
TF300 and 700 got theirs like 2+ weeks ago. Bad signs?

Tf300 and 700 only got some minor bug fixes which we had one not long back.
4.2.1 is not out for any of the 3 devices yet which everyone is waiting for.
I think there is not any non-Nexus device out there which has gotten their 4.2 update yet.
I also have a Nexus 10 and there are a bunch of bugs with Android 4.2. Some like the random reboots are especially bad.

The TF201 probably won't get an update until these are resolved and that's a good thing.

This.
I don't know about you guys but I'd rather let the Nexus owners be the beta testers and run on a stable firmware myself.
Any ideas what the update will bring?
Any idea if Google will buy Apple and sell a hybrid device that will never ever be upgraded, therefore doing away with upgrades altogether ?
