Akkk what obvious answer am I missing here;( - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I rooted my nook and blocked OTAs with the indirects method....everything was perfect! And because I am a moron who thought she was be "proactive" I am a little stuck. I noticed people having trouble with their widgets moved their launcher apk...from data/app to system/app. I wasn't having trouble with my widgets but was so stupid and thought id prevent any future problems. Instead of moving it I created a link.....as someone had suggested instead.....when I noticed that didn't work.....I went back ib to try and actually move it....but it said not enough space.....I figured I shouldn't have messes with it at all...so I backed out...but it was on the stock nook screen. I couldn't figure out how to get back to my go launcher from there....so I thought perhaps if I erase and degresiter my device.....idiot. so now my device says 1.4.0.....NOT 9.9.9 anymore.....and it is on the stock b&N launcher still....surely I didn't unroot it right? Any one who could help an idiot noob? ?? I apologize for posting and not searching...but I am not quite sure what to search for because I font really know what I did and what the problem is.....

ok you have erased and deregistered your device from the nook tablet stock settings right? which means ur still rooted in terms of being able to run sideloaded apks.
if you want to take the short route u can just download go launcher ex on your computer and sideload it any do the same process for anything else you are missing, but i would recommend you start from scratch.
to start from scratch, find the superuser.apk which can be found in the nook and zergy installation folder, sideload it onto your nook tablet and also sideload the Nook Tablet Unroot App which Indirect created. Run that app and if all goes well you should have a stock nook tablet at 1.4.0.
just re-run your nook and zergy and you should be fine.
the other option is using adb hijack app, but seeing as you are a novice, i don't think you would want to go that route. hope this helps.

Oh thank you!! Ya I downloaded adb before to go that route and it hurt my brain a little Haha I was happy to find indirects method. Thank you a ton I will do that now!

Okay im getting pretty nervous that im royally screwed. My nook looks like stock 1.4.0 except the little mini book and back button in the status bar that came when I rooted. However....there is no internet browser application ....and every apk I have sideloaded it says.....the nook cannot read this type of file....so I figured I need to re load the appmenu.apk and enable third party....well dur it wont read that file apk either. What gave I done????? Anyone???

The N button will take be back home....but it doesn't bring up the quick menu.....If I try to do another factory reset....when I click erase and deregister it forecloses. ;(;( pretty scared

ok... what exactly did you do? did you run the nook unroot application that indirect created? I'm kind of confused as to what you did after I posted my suggestions.

I would suggest that you do this.

If it comes to it, power down, hold power and 'n' and it'll turn on, then come to the black background with the n logo then power off. Release just the power button and press and hold again for 7 more times.
On the 9th time just use the power button to turn it on and it'll prompt you with some warnings. Follow through with the continue and it will perform the steps.
BE WARNED: this will perform a complete factory restore so any installed apps will be gone but it won't touch your SD card.

Well I decided to start from scratch...so I moved the superuser apk over to my tablet and the unroot apk.....but neither of them would open in mu tablet.....it would just say. Nook cannot read this file type.....and when I click N button to search....nothing happens except it takes me home......I guess I could try the sd card I did that for my moms nook and it went smoothly....
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App

Well I tries the power and N 9 times thing....it did a reset again like normal but my status bar still looks rooted although the N button doesn't pull up a quick settings like the stock b&N should.....so I still cannot access the search or internet ....or sideload any apps yet it says 1.4.0..... but appears to still be rooted! Akkk
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App

Okay the sd card did it finally I could go into browser....allow third part appear and check the usb debugging and uncheck automount.....should I assume I am uprooted....ans reuse the Serge script....or try to unroot first?

I really must be dense. Im very sorry for all the questions....but even after checking the unknown sources....if I go to my sd card and try to install one of the apks like superuser or unrooter it says it cannot read the format....am I missing something simple?

Thanks dodgepot! So it seemed to work great that time...so I downloaded the superuser apk from an email to myself and the unroot apk....when I like on the nook tablet unroot after installing it says...."could not echojava.ioexception: error running exec() command superuser working directory null environment null".....

You cannot install apks that way, it will always say that, easiest way is to install the GApps and then get root explorer and copy the files from your SD card to /system/app.

It says my su binary is out of date..but when I update it fails. I just want to unroot and start over. I emailed myself the superuser app from the indirect rooting folder....downloaded it ob my tablet and it installed just fine....so did the unroot file.....is this because I didn't copy it over the way you are saying? So I just need to download gapps and rootexplorer?

Ok ready im gonna walk you through it.
Root your device
Download the latest super user package, the full package
Unzip the package on your computer, and then find the su in ./system/bin and the SuperUser.apk into the sdcard.
Using root explorer, mount /system/ as rw, and then copy su into /system/bin and superuser.apk into /system/app.
done

your instructions are very clear, but I am not sure how I can move anything in ROOT explorer when I can't get root explorer on my device in the first place....I finally found a download in my browser, and was able to install it on my device...but when I go in there is no option to MOUNT R/W it is simply mounted in R/O....
I keep RE-downloading Go Launcher from my email, and re-opening it....because every single time I hit my N button it takes me back to stock with no way to find the go launcher app....I don't care as long as I can get this dang SU issue fixed so I can unroot and be done with this. what am I missing here, I am sorry i must be very frustrating...but there is no option to change the system to R/W in my root explorer, where there was the button at the top to easily do that before. I am assuming it has to do with the SU not being updated, but I can't do that without rootexplorere akkk and I am not advanced enough to use ADB I dont think.....any ideas? my tablet easily downloads and installs things from emails.....thats the only thing I have going for me right now

How do i go about installing this? I uninstalled the original app using titaniun backup but now wuen i go to install this apk it says something about installing over an older version (even though i thought i uninstalled it) and then it says uninstall failed. Do i have to use adb?
which rom are u running. You should be able to install it over the old youtube. It should ask u to upgrade. I use astro file manager. All I did is went to downloads clicked onto youtube apk and opened it and installed it.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
I am running xtrSense 4.2.1
xtrom and xtrsense will not let u over ride some apps. They are built in to the rom. Try using kaosfroyo or tenzo's plainjane rom with cache2cache. If u decide to use kaosfroyo, go to the market and upgrade what he has installed. Kaosfroyo will let u view hd by default. There is a new youtube on the market only available for froyo
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
so theres no way (even with adb) to push that apk while using xtrSense? I have never been a fan of the Froyo rom as it seems to run really slow to me for some reason (even when OC-ed).
No, there is not. Checkout the threads, there are 2 sensefroyo roms out on beta. It's looking cool. kaosfroyo is pretty fast. check it out.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
FYI: The posted version is 1.6, not the new 2.0 that's still Froyo only.
You can use root explorer in the market to replace your old YouTube apk with this one. Yes its a paid app but its worth it. I have xtrROM 4.5 loaded and so far no issues. Just make sure you rename the old apk first just in case you run into any problems.
Sent from my Eris
Also forgot to mention this as its critical - by default root explorer will not mount your system/app folder. Tap mount r/w on the top right of your screen when youre in the folder before you rename and paste the new file. Then tap and hold, select permissions and reset these so they are identical to the old file. Then reboot your phone.
Sent from my Eris
Ok one more thing. When you rename the old file, just add .old to the end of the file.
Sent from my Eris
ok thanks a bunch, ill try that later tonight. I love my xtrSense lol. Ive tried the new TenzoSense Remix rom and honestly its nice, but xtrSense just seems rock solid when it comes to fluidity and performance (taking into account that the remix rom is only a RC1 rom).
I may very well buy the root explorer and not just refund it, although how much of an advantage does it have over titanium backup?
Root explorer is just a file manager for root users. I've never used titanium backup since I keep a backup of my apps and there isn't much in settings that I can't redo in seconds. I just stick with nandroid backups

VirusROM apps keep reverting back to stock

My apps like Market n Pandora n just the qualities in general keep changing. Market icon reverts to green n inside I lose transparent aspect. Maybe Pandora doesn't change now that I think... Anyway its annoying. Does anyone know why. Is it cuz it updates w/out me choosing to somehow or a bug. I tried searching this but maybe I shouldn't have limited to virusROM. Not sure if its native to vr or wut
Sent from my TB (virusROM-kernel undecided) using XDA App
Not sure about Pandora but my market was doing the same thing. I read up on it and was told to reflash the ROM but make sure you backup all data using nandroid. Then after you reflash rename marketupdater.apk to a .bak extension. This will prevent the market from automatically updating. Once u reflash and reboot you can revert back to your old settings and apps using the backup you saved. Hope this helps
Sent from Ced's Thunderbolt XDA app - Infected with the VirusROM
the apps get updated so they lose the custom look and feel. no biggie, wait for the next VirusROM release, Im sure all the latest apps will be customized again.
After this happened to me while on my Droid X, I started doing this:
Right after the new ROM first boots, I make sure my root file explorer is installed and has SU permissions.
I navigate to system/app/MarketUpdater.apk
Click on Mount as RW (usually top of screen in your root explorer app)
Long press on the market updater
Tap Rename
Rename same as original, but change the file extension to .bak
I do all of this BEFORE I open the market for the first time after flashing a ROM.
This keeps the market from updating to the latest green version.
I love u guys. Can't find thanks button on phone but thanks. I really love this place

[Q] How to Re-install Lost Contacts.APK in Vibrant

Have the ROM Bionix V 1.3.1 installed and it's a great rom but one issue. I flashed it on 2 phones but contacts force closes on one phone #1 every time I tried to either access it directly or indirectly (like when you long press a number to save a contact). Phone # 2 works great.
So, I deleted contacts.apk on phone #1 and tried to copy the apk from phone # 2 to #1 but it won't let me install. Any tips? I am using An outside dialer just to call now but I have some time now to try to fix it. Any help would be appreciated, czr

Can someone post the vibrant cobtacts.Apk and give me pointers on install so my phone will take it?

You can't install system apps just by pressing on them. You have to use root explorer to push app in /system/app directory.

^^AGREED^^
Take the one from the ROM zip itself, or from the phone that it werks on whatever really. Good luck!
You need an app called Root Explorer as Alex mentioned. Then, mount it with root rights and RW privileges (its a checkbox at the top while using it) and copy the apk to the same place it is on the working phone. Then, restart your broken phone and it should be fixed.
If you have the force-closing again, something else is causing it, likely a setting conflicting somewhere. You may need to go ahead and reset some settings from Titanium Backup then.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Such a simple fix since I had a good working copy of the apk on the other phone. Got it to work!

Rooting Help Needed Please

I can get my table to root using nook zergy, but when it comes time to choose a launcher, I get to choose from 3...the two off the top of my head I can remember are AWD launcher and Honeycomb launcher.
When I choose either launcher, the files cannot be found and it moves on and tells me to press any key to continue. Then it moves on to the block OTA questions and blote removal option. I can get the system to reboot, but nothing is done. When I run nook zergy again it tells me that I do not have the "hijacker" installed.
I'm totally lost. Please help.

I have done a factory reset 4 times. Will I need to install the hijacker after I root or before? Being the noob I am, I think I would install on the device, then root.
Any direction you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I'm not super technical, but I was able to root my nook color without issues.
Sounds like you just need to side-load in a replacement launcher, then eat a sandwich and drink beer. My preference is Go Launcher.
Hijacker is needed to allow a rooted tablet to be recognized by Zergy.
After a factory reset, you must "Unregister" the device to truly blank it.
If everything else went well though, sounds like you just simply need a launcher.

Use Ccleaner to clean up your pc off temp files, cache, etc and registries. Proceed with root. If you still have problems try in another machine (Windows is not your friend sometimes ... ok ok many times! )
changing computers helped. Still took me a couple of tries for some reason, but I made it work. So far my uncle is enjoying it.
Thank you all for your help.

what in theee hell am i doing wrong? :( NT 8GB

just picked up a NT 8gb...
it's running v1.4.2 but i still got it rooted...i got Android Play Store (market) working... i installed the 'NT Hidden Settings' app and selected allow installs from uknown sources...yet, this doesn't seem to stick when i exit the setting...so this may be my problem #1
problem #2...i have read tons of posts from this and other sites and i can't for the life of me get CWM installed so that i can install CM7 or any other rom...a lot of the links i hit are for just the 16gb version and some say i should downgrade to 1.4, yet there is a method for rooting if on 1.4.2...very confusing...
do i need to downgrade to v1.4? what is the easiest method...
i currently have the recovery flash apk, google apps and cm7 on an sd card but this really doesn't do me any good if i can't get into CWM...
btw, if i select the .apk from withing the NT, it tells me that it's not a supported file type...

My reading is that the 8gig never was 1.4.0 so you can't downgrade. You say you are rooted and then ask about rooting. I have never had NT hidden settings stick. I would set it, leave it on the screen, hit home, search my file browser run it and use that to install my apk. This left NT hidden settings running and worked for me.
Good Luck!
oh, the reason for the confusion while searching is most threads were started before anyone dreamed of an 8gig and they have not been updated to reflect that it now exist. Most probably never will be updated. Look for specific 8gig info and assume if it is not spelled out that it does not apply to you.

Use adb push command or adb install to push the recovery flasher app, once done use adb kill-server and unmount safetly nook tablet from windows. Then in your nook tablet search for the app an open it once there let me know. You have to wait 10 seconds after you click on the flash recovery button for precaution and before you click on the reboot to recovery button.

Did you make a backup of your stock rom before attempt to flash cm7? If so flash that if not you will have to download official stock 1.4.2 from B&N support web page, copy it to your sdcard and make it boot (like the acclaim_update.zip process) it should flash automatically.

no, didn't.... i'm an ape and totally messed this thing up....
if i grab the official 1.4.2 from B&N support, i can just flash that from CWM then, if i place it on the root of the sd card?
not sure why i couldn't get any of this to work...have used CWM before and messed with quite a few roms on my samsung epic pretty easily...
