just picked up a NT 8gb...
it's running v1.4.2 but i still got it rooted...i got Android Play Store (market) working... i installed the 'NT Hidden Settings' app and selected allow installs from uknown sources...yet, this doesn't seem to stick when i exit the setting...so this may be my problem #1
problem #2...i have read tons of posts from this and other sites and i can't for the life of me get CWM installed so that i can install CM7 or any other rom...a lot of the links i hit are for just the 16gb version and some say i should downgrade to 1.4, yet there is a method for rooting if on 1.4.2...very confusing...
do i need to downgrade to v1.4? what is the easiest method...
i currently have the recovery flash apk, google apps and cm7 on an sd card but this really doesn't do me any good if i can't get into CWM...
btw, if i select the .apk from withing the NT, it tells me that it's not a supported file type...

My reading is that the 8gig never was 1.4.0 so you can't downgrade. You say you are rooted and then ask about rooting. I have never had NT hidden settings stick. I would set it, leave it on the screen, hit home, search my file browser run it and use that to install my apk. This left NT hidden settings running and worked for me.
Good Luck!
oh, the reason for the confusion while searching is most threads were started before anyone dreamed of an 8gig and they have not been updated to reflect that it now exist. Most probably never will be updated. Look for specific 8gig info and assume if it is not spelled out that it does not apply to you.

Use adb push command or adb install to push the recovery flasher app, once done use adb kill-server and unmount safetly nook tablet from windows. Then in your nook tablet search for the app an open it once there let me know. You have to wait 10 seconds after you click on the flash recovery button for precaution and before you click on the reboot to recovery button.

Did you make a backup of your stock rom before attempt to flash cm7? If so flash that if not you will have to download official stock 1.4.2 from B&N support web page, copy it to your sdcard and make it boot (like the acclaim_update.zip process) it should flash automatically.
~ Veronica

no, didn't.... i'm an ape and totally messed this thing up....
if i grab the official 1.4.2 from B&N support, i can just flash that from CWM then, if i place it on the root of the sd card?
not sure why i couldn't get any of this to work...have used CWM before and messed with quite a few roms on my samsung epic pretty easily...

if your rooted already, DO THIS.
Search market for OCLF, its caled ryanzky's lag fix or something
you MUST have over 40 percent on battery to apply lagfix, then go see the aviable options (green ones) and click apply ext4 tools or soemthing
then apply the lagfix with binds or something like that.
its the easiest way.
also when you do the lagfix, it WILL take about 4 minutes, because its moving data and all, so yeah.
well i figured out how to install it... problem is that it says i have another lag fix already on my phone (which is voodoo i assume) even though i disabled it and deleted the folder... guess i'll have to do a complete wipe of memory and cached memory... at least i have titanium pro!
Same. Thought I would experiment with it. States I have a lag fix and references a playlogo file.
Guess it's time to Google
All done/fixed.... all I had to do was click on the restore boot animation
rebooted and then flashed the v2+ LF.
Pretty painless and a good (yet pointless quadrant score) if around 1900.

The second download link in the root thread is for the tgps _launcher.apk
Open it and you can change the settings there.
This is also where you click development and turn on the two USB debugging boxes and uncheck automount
most problems can be solved by doing a factory restore and try the rooting process step by step with the video without doing anything else.
Factory restore can be achieved by turning off device, and then hold both the N and the power button for 6 -10 seconds while turning on the tablet.
I used the second download link.. It downloaded TGPS.... Are there two TGPS download links?

Need Help urgently
Hello all, I am having trouble rooting my NT. I've rooted it before only once but I found out I was missing something so I decided to un-root by using Indirect's One click unroot. It completed, but I have been having trouble getting Nook&Zergy to run. It detects my NT as a device with a string of letters/numbers, but when I enter "y" for yes, it just prints some stuff out and automatically exits. Any ideas? I just got mine today and was so pumped, but this is really starting to get to me T_T...
I rooted my nook and blocked OTAs with the indirects method....everything was perfect! And because I am a moron who thought she was be "proactive" I am a little stuck. I noticed people having trouble with their widgets moved their launcher apk...from data/app to system/app. I wasn't having trouble with my widgets but was so stupid and thought id prevent any future problems. Instead of moving it I created a link.....as someone had suggested instead.....when I noticed that didn't work.....I went back ib to try and actually move it....but it said not enough space.....I figured I shouldn't have messes with it at all...so I backed out...but it was on the stock nook screen. I couldn't figure out how to get back to my go launcher from there....so I thought perhaps if I erase and degresiter my device.....idiot. so now my device says 1.4.0.....NOT 9.9.9 anymore.....and it is on the stock b&N launcher still....surely I didn't unroot it right? Any one who could help an idiot noob? ?? I apologize for posting and not searching...but I am not quite sure what to search for because I font really know what I did and what the problem is.....

ok you have erased and deregistered your device from the nook tablet stock settings right? which means ur still rooted in terms of being able to run sideloaded apks.
if you want to take the short route u can just download go launcher ex on your computer and sideload it any do the same process for anything else you are missing, but i would recommend you start from scratch.
to start from scratch, find the superuser.apk which can be found in the nook and zergy installation folder, sideload it onto your nook tablet and also sideload the Nook Tablet Unroot App which Indirect created. Run that app and if all goes well you should have a stock nook tablet at 1.4.0.
just re-run your nook and zergy and you should be fine.
the other option is using adb hijack app, but seeing as you are a novice, i don't think you would want to go that route. hope this helps.
Oh thank you!! Ya I downloaded adb before to go that route and it hurt my brain a little Haha I was happy to find indirects method. Thank you a ton I will do that now!

However....there is no internet browser application ....and every apk I have sideloaded it says.....the nook cannot read this type of file....so I figured I need to re load the appmenu.apk and enable third party....well dur it wont read that file apk either. ok... what exactly did you do? did you run the nook unroot application that indirect created? I'm kind of confused as to what you did after I posted my suggestions.
I would suggest that you do this.
If it comes to it, power down, hold power and 'n' and it'll turn on, then come to the black background with the n logo then power off. Release just the power button and press and hold again for 7 more times.
On the 9th time just use the power button to turn it on and it'll prompt you with some warnings. Follow through with the continue and it will perform the steps.
BE WARNED: this will perform a complete factory restore so any installed apps will be gone but it won't touch your SD card.

Ok ready im gonna walk you through it.
Root your device
Download the latest super user package, the full package
Unzip the package on your computer, and then find the su in ./system/bin and the SuperUser.apk into the sdcard.
Using root explorer, mount /system/ as rw, and then copy su into /system/bin and superuser.apk into /system/app.
done
your instructions are very clear, but I am not sure how I can move anything in ROOT explorer when I can't get root explorer on my device in the first place....I finally found a download in my browser, and was able to install it on my device...but when I go in there is no option to MOUNT R/W it is simply mounted in R/O....
I keep RE-downloading Go Launcher from my email, and re-opening it....because every single time I hit my N button it takes me back to stock with no way to find the go launcher app....I don't care as long as I can get this dang SU issue fixed so I can unroot and be done with this. what am I missing here, I am sorry i must be very frustrating...but there is no option to change the system to R/W in my root explorer, where there was the button at the top to easily do that before. I am assuming it has to do with the SU not being updated, but I can't do that without rootexplorere akkk and I am not advanced enough to use ADB I dont think.....any ideas? my tablet easily downloads and installs things from emails.....thats the only thing I have going for me right now
Both of my computers refused to let me change the drivers in the NT.
I was able to get it from 1.4.1 to 1.4.0 and sideload apps. I got cwm into emmc then got ADB launcher working which helped my disposition. I have no use for B&N home, etc.
By determination rather than knowledge; I have it doing what I have been doing on the NC for a year. I also have the reader from B&N (I missed that on the cm7 NC) without having to see the rest of B&N.
What condition should the NT be in before putting cm7 on? How can I tell if the drivers are right for the new cm7? How can I tell if it’s even rooted. This is so embarrassing! I have this thing working so good but I got there in such a convoluted way!
As of right now, the Alpha links to CM7 has been pulled due to an error where it would brick your device when you tried to format an sd card. I'm a noob in the development area, but from what I can gather, as long you have CWM either internally or on an sd card, you would be able to flash CM7 and wouldn't need to update any drivers. The drivers are necessary for adb especially for Indirect's nook and zergy method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487) and if you had issues updating the drivers try (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415812) or if you are having trouble seeing the device when you ran the nook&zergy root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363652) this should help you out. Hope this helps.
If it is rooted, what will the specs say? There should be a way to tell.
Sent from my Nook Tablet
Using Indirect's Nook&Zergy through your computer, your software version would be 9.9.9 because of the OTA block and for me, the wifi Mac Address on my NT says Unavailable.
From what you have said in your previous post, it seems that you only downgraded to 1.4.0 and then sideloaded apps. So just to clarify, do you have any gapps(google apps like market, talk, calendar) on your device? Do you have Superuser? Also if you have rooted your device, if you use es file explorer (free app) and go to settings you can see if you can mount the emmc (internal memory) which require root and super user permission. Or just try using Button Savior app which requires root as well.
That's what I did. I only sideloaded a few apps to see it it worked. But when restarted it only a couple were there. Then the next time I turned it on I saw something load that I didn't recognize, then I was able to download anything I wanted from the market.
It is not rooted but Superuser and Root Explorer works like my rooted NC. I have cmw from Rom Mgr. Button Savior didn't work.

That's what I did. I only sideloaded a few apps to see it it worked. But when restarted it only a couple were there. Then the next time I turned it on I saw something load that I didn't recognize, then I was able to download anything I wanted from the market.

For the symptoms you mention i think you got caught by the 1.4.1 update. Oh well!. If you have CWM then boot into it and flash back to 1.4.0 using one of the 2 ROM's offered in this page, copy it to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup folder and restore from CWM Backup & restore> restore, select the folder and thats it. What i have mentioned here is in my FAQ too.

Alright, first of all, before you all freak out thinking that we can't root 1.4.2 or even gain access to the 8gb iteration of the nook, Fattire and I have talked and it looks like there is no real changes in uboot meaning that in theory, it can still be broken into with bauwks' uboot.
What does this mean?
Well, until someone creates an image and tests it, we won't know. But don't go assuming that it's unhackable. Also, I'm certainly not going to do it and neither is fattire since we don't want to have to purchase the 8gb nook tablet since it's basically a kindle fire and that's not ok. They should have stuck with the 16gb edition of the nook. Anyway, if you poor saps are willing to just buy the 8gb nook, I say wait until people can verify the image. I however, will not be giving B&N any more money at all.
So, what have we learned?
Don't assume things are unhackable. If they are slightly different, the exact same files won't work. We need to wait for new images for the 8gb version of the nook tablet to be hackable.
1.4.2 is still completely hackable using the sdcard method we have right now to root. It literally will work on every version.
EDIT: DO NOT FLASH 1.4.0 to an 8gb nook tablet. If you do, you're **** out of luck and need to go to B&N. Don't pm me asking for help.
Here were my thoughts, FWIW. It needs a real test tho.

Hah. I didn't want to have to purchase the first version either... and didn't. I'm not a fan of all this locked stuff.
Why must you call me a poor sap?

Locking isn't the issue

I think the issue is not the locking, but running a bootloader configured to load the kernel & ramdisk into 1GB of RAM, onto a device with only 512MB of RAM.

Yes but if the device wasn't locked, and we could get people to pay attention to the fact that 1.4.2 is just as rootable as 1.4.0 and just as easy we wouldn't have people thinking that 1.4.0 is the only way to root ever. Which would stop them from trying to flash acclaim update to their 8GB devices. Well... at least one can hope.
How's this for a slap in the face... I'm 82% sure that the bootloader on my brand spankin' new 16gb is locked differently. I've tried 4 different root methods and can't get the tablet to boot off of an SD card.

This is just a thought, but it might work. I had a problem getting my NT to boot off of a used sd card. Even after reformatting you would think it would work, but in my case it didn't. I went out and bought a fresh sd card and it worked. It's worth a try, unless, off course, you have already tried a new card.

More like 3, a 16gb and two 4gb.
Have you tried turning the NT off and then turning it on by plugging in the charging cable? With the SD inserted of course.
So it seems they are making some behind the scenes changes to block things?

Well, I bought an 8GB version 2 days ago without knowing they halved the memory. Just came back from the States as I live in Belgium, so I can't return it and just have to live with it. If there's anything I can do to help/test, let me know!

Ditto. Bought it off Ebay, and the dude forgot to mention it wasn't a 16 GB model.
NT 8Gb + CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 - Backup fail
Hi.
how to make Backup in NT 8Gb + CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4
the process of freezing as a video:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546627
can someone has the correct CWM?
I'll try and get an 8gb recovery up. ._.

Thanks Indirect,
A CWM Recovery Tool for the 8Gb Nook Tablet would be awesome.
I'm in Australia and stupidly picked the 8Gb version not realising that it's 512Mb of RAM would be such an issue. And being over here I can't swap it.
So far I've:
- Successfully rooted it using jichuan89's great boot image (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553)
- Installed "NT Hidden Settings" from the Android Marketplace and allowed unverified application installs.
- Tried installing the CWM Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630) but received errors when installing ("Unable to install: This application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and the "Unarchive" the application to try again" for App Installer and "Parse Error: There is a problem parsing the package" for Package Installer.
I'd really love to load CM7 but at the moment my big stumbling block is backing up the stock ROM using CWM.
Cheers
Chris

From what I remember if you try to install an app with app installer first it won't work with package installer after that. You might try redownloading and try package installer first.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Weirdly enough, turning it on an off and re-downloading the "Nook Recovery Flasher.apk" allowed me to install using Package Installer.
Now:
- I installed the CWM Nook Recovery Flasher and ran the install option
- Pressed the reboot button
- Now my 8Gb NT tries to start, shows the brown box for a few second and then the box starts "jumping" or flickering and the device hangs.
So far the only thing I've been able to do to get it working at all is to run CM7 from an SD card (from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826)
Is there any way yet to restore an 8Gb NT? (and yes, now I know that I'm an idiot for getting an 8Gb version but I'm in Australia, so returning it isn't an easy option).
Thanks
Chris

I have just finished rebuilding all of cwm from source. So I think this build has all the changes required for the 8GB versions
The current version is SDcard only but can easily be converted to run internally too.
Please test and give feedback

Would be better if you create a thread in development section for this specific recovery for 8GB NT model, so users go straight to use yours instead of try @indirect app or pushing the old normal recovery with adb tool.
