[Q] slim/minimal stock rom??? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, i'm lokking for a rom like insanity ii or surface rom (sgs) for my sgs2. I love insanity ii but i'm looking for a stock rom not aosp.
to me it seems like there is no really small stock rom for the sgs2 that has all the bloatware removed and not added a lot of other crap into it by the addon developer..
I'm talking <100mb here!
Thanks for your help.

You can just pick any rom you want, open the zip with winzip, winrar, 7zip or w/e (thats open not extract) and delete the apks you dont want, theres a list of basically every apk and what it does in my sig.
And even stripped bare with all the tw apps removed i only ever really got the rom down to 180meg ish, these days i just freeze apps with titanium, its not like we need the space on the system partition.

See, thats why i need a small rom, because its not just the apps creating a too big rom
Having a too big rom with a lot of crap that i dont even need just really pisses me off.

Everyone has different needs so doing slim roms will mean there is always someone asking for something added/removed, your best bet is to poke around in the zip and remove stuff you dont want, its not to hard, just keep a working backup incase you remove something that means it wont boot.
Also samsung roms will never be as small as AOSP roms as there framework is bloated by touchwizz (which you cant remove from the framework, only the apps.

Rom Kitchen on XDA has slim rom build your own rom
Google Tornado2 rom very light most apps stripped out .
jje

You could try this,
First download WinZIP and the ROM of your choice.
1.Put the cursor on top of the ROM and right click once and you will get a menu.
2.Select "open with..." and select WinZIP which will open the ROM.
3.Double left click SYSTEM then APP to open system apps folder and delete what you dont want.
4.Double left click DATA then APP will open then apps folder where (normally) the dev puts their added apps.Delete what you dont want
To delete left click once one the app and then DELETE in the control panal at the top.
Deletable Samsung apps list: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html

Don't usually advise on ROMs, but at least you made your needs clear.
This is what you want, trust me - krinyo's SlimROM. Just over 100 MB (114 I think, but you can strip it down further if that floats your boat).
Just works - stable as a Bethlehem nativity scene.
Slimmer than my wife's waist.
Faster than Usain on coke.
Better support than Pammy Anderson's bra.
Been using it exclusively for 3 or 4 weeks now (EDIT - 6 weeks, if it matters...), not changing for love and money. Themes for all tastes too.
Go on - you'll love it

Man i love you for that post
i'm not even sure if i love it more for the rom or for the way you wrote it xD
awesome, i even thought about creating a second account so i could thank you more than once for it xD

This is true. However, deep inside I really wish to ask that as I tried so many and so hard to decide.
Here's a quick breakdown
Cognition
- smooth
- why I dislike: The feel of the UI (self preference)
Litening 4.1
- GREAT
- really fast in speed
- why I dislike: been too long see-ing blue colour
VillianROM
- GREAT
- smooth UI, fun to play, many tweaks according to your liking
- why I dislike: seeing too much green robot is boring (if you get what I mean)
Exynos Extreme
- current favourite
- very smooth, like the part where the author actually remove unwanted apps for us
- downside: 3.4 is a little buggy (can't copy and paste), 3.3 is smooth and GREAT
Generally, Litening 4.1 give good battery life. Exynos too but I am using Exynos with SpeedMOD so a little different here.
There you go

It's a fair question but prbably should have asked which ROM people prefer. I hate it when people get flamed for asking which ROM people like best. Some of us don't have the time to download every ROM out there and just want to hear others' opinions..
Keep the opinions coming - I want to be tempted away from stock!

I got to agree. Some reason, it felt unique compared to Litening and the rest. Not sure why though.
The best ROM is subjective and will probably change within a week of this question been asked.

Closest thing to MIUI...

I'm looking for a rom that is similar to the Look of MIUI (obviously nothing will be very similar) but maybe something resembles it in some ways. I've recognized that there are 2 tpos of roms, the ones that follow the generic, gingerbread frame, or ICS frame (aokp, unamed, phonebricker, ICSrewed, CM7/9 etc.) and then MIUI, who kinda does their own design. I've been partial to MIUI ever since I laid my hands on it.
Reason why I'm asking for a look-a-like is because I've been running the scottish one for some time (1.11.9) but she's had the no service bug issue for some time now where everytime I attempt to make a call, 80% of the time it'll lose service and it takes like 4 tries or so till my call goes through. Unacceptable. Yet I can't keep myself away from the build. It's just so speedy. Wish I could have a more recent build for my I777 but I can't find one anywhere. I've also tried a million builds for the regular MIUI, 2.2.3 V2 being the most recent one I could find (I believe that's the most recent? I literally searched for hours), but this build also has the same call service drop bug. Can't stand it.
Can anyone help with my situation? Currently running MIUI V4 ICS, and it's sweet and all but it's wrecking my brain with how slow it isss . Anything similar to MIUI or help with a fix or newer version. Mucho appreciated!!!
Btw I'm no noob to flashing, have flashed at least 20 different roms and all, just wondering if there is anything I missed...in terms of what I'm looking for. Cus I hate settling.

Yeah I'm really looking for more than just a launcher though. I'm already aware of the creation of MIUI launcher and that's sweet but it doesn't encompass settings themes and notification draw down etc. I'm not super picky about that but I'd prefer everything to be uniform...so not gonna go with that method.
LewaOS is something i I'd call pretty similar to MIUI. Lilchris has a post of it in ported section.

Duddeeeeeeeeee. Just went back through it and found AdyScorpius' version of MIUI. I'd gone through that before but I guess I missed this version. If it's anything like Galnet I'm gonna be soooooo happy. I'm gonna flash it now!! So excited hahah. I'm a speed freak, need my lag free interface, otherwise I get annoyed >.>

Hahah idk, I was reading up on all these bugs that I haven't really heard of in the general MIUI builds. I'm using it though and it's snappy pappy. Except going back from a conversation message, to just the conversation list. It reverts quickly, but the text doesn't load as quick as the transition. Annoyanceeeee lol. Idc though...sorta. Is good though. Is real good. Wondering if it's worth bumpin up to ICS V4 cus I didn't realize RIUI and AdyScorp were making roms like this. Trying to decide whether upgrading is worth the stupid notification swipe or not. So annoying.

MIUI sucks because it is so slow and in development. The only thing that is great about it is it's interconnected community and even app. Which is all JUST SHOW if you know how to flash your own ROMs.
If you want speed, battery, and best overall flawlessness I suggest: shostock!

I have nothing against all the Samsung Touchwiz based Roms. I just plain don't like em. I have two things that I need personally, and that is speed, and an appealing look/design. Although CM7/CM9 can have a...functional/sophisticated look to them, they aren't quite as unique and sophisticated as the MIUI themes. Namely, CM is all very square and proper, while MIUI seems to be a little more accommodating if you will. I like to speed through things, and I'm particular about the way I do things. For example: when texting someone I like to send a text, then go back to the conversation list, so that when I get a new text I can see who it was from. I used UnNamed rom for a little bit (a month maybe) - and also tried ShoStock because I'd heard a lot about that too. I flashed it, but it basically seemed to be the same thing. Anyway when using unnamed there was obvious lag interface between the message system when I'd press back twice really quick after sending a text (once to close keyboard, once to close keyboard, another to go back to conversation list). MIUI is more smooth in it's transition and seems to have not necesarilly more poignant scirpting but mayhaps faster. I like MIUI's notification bar and status bar. I like how the notifications have a page and I can click my wifi, data, airplane mode, gps, rotation, and brightness all on the same page, without having to swipe left or right to find more. Mostly I'm a fan of the themes of course, since they simply look awesome. If you care so much move to AOKP, it's better than any Samsung Touchwiz Rom I've ever used, for that type of person. I love AOKP, but I can't seem to stand the crude looking toggles/switches, and the damn launcer (all 3 of them). I find app drawers to be very unnecessary (my own personal opinion - plenty of interpretations there). But I'm willing to further discuss this if you want haha. No mean to be insulting but you basically started the engagement

Rambling about a cool rom idea...nothing important tho!

A Universal Rom idea...
With every Launcher (done through aroma) (touchwiz, sense, miui, cm10, aosp, liquid, (custom for rom...Launcher)) (with explicit details on what wont work for each launcher)
A large list of pre-installed themes (not just standard)
Multiple Lockscreen selections inside Aroma
large list of browsers apps for selection (file and internet) (what can i say, people have their preferences)
large list of music enhancing applications for selection (such as acid tech and walkman player, beats, awesome beats, beats pro, dsp manager, volume +)
Complete list of kernels for device on rom
large list of system fonts
Pacman config options (AOKP, CM10, PA) (possibly with selection of baked rom control instead of regular AOKP)
Pre-installed T-mobile theme manager (sorts themes on market and makes them more easily readable for download, alows different sorting options)
Adblock for android
Inverted or regular gapp selection
Option to replace system applications with ones that exist on market (for example, talkatone includes free minutes, free texting, no ads, and you keep
your number) (Messaging 7 is an example of my preferred messaging application i use from the market)
Optional keyboard selection, from a large list (branches down from swype or no swype to other options, inside aroma)
Any additional mods for the phone included inside aroma (with descriptions)
Bloat removal included inside aroma
Gesture Control (if possible)
Boot animation config inside of aroma, with screenshots of each on OP
Possible Development Collaboration to include mods from specific roms to help in development of this one. (Which i would personally include the viper
battery control (never had better battery life) (some tweaks from SuperJelly, bareback) (I would also include the viper rom configuration options, if sense
was selected, after ported to jelly bean)
Oh and rom installer and zip file deletion script after it installs to remove that large ass download from your phone or tablet.
Multiple GPS navigation application options.
Idk maybe its just me, but if i could have one rom with a million different aroma options, id have 1 rom, i could re-do over and over, satisfying my rom addiction for months. I thought it sounded like a cool idea, dont know if its all completely possible but i hate finding an issue with a rom and having to download another 300mb+ file to find another problem with a rom. Its almost the same issue i have with media, and competition, except its a free thing.
To be honest. I wouldnt mind paying for a rom that had every feature every rom offered compiled into one very large aroma installer. 5-10-20 bucks and i have an ultra phone, and would never have to download another rom...Perm satisfying my rom addiction by creating an UltraROM, possibly using svn to not have to download updates. Or a pre-configured OTA, However in that option, and i was paying for it, you better have a good server lol, cause id rather download from dev host at 4-5MB/s than download from a **** server direct link that lets me dl at 100KB/s
Any thoughts?
Most of it is do able with my skill set just have to learn the installer aroma. But it why that is alot of work my private cm7 on my old g2x had alot of stuff just no options. It was alot of work and asop or cm10 needs to fix lte before i touch them to try but im going to learn aroma soon anyway. So ill think about it seems interesting.

A thread for this. ? :banghead: why not choose the ROM that most meets these requests, and add the rest yourself?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Ah haha hahaha
Is something wrong with the idea of a paid ROM that includes all the features present in other roms? Yes this is a thread, because as far as i know it hasnt been done. There isnt even a free rom that includes all the good features from every rom.
There are multiple roms with different features that you find appealing, which makes you want to switch between them all of the time, and actually causes the want to switch between said roms frequently. The desire for a perfect rom exists, however a perfect rom doesnt exist, so you go back and foruth between them all the time. Always wanting a new rom, always wanting a different one, always wanting to see that new feature. Which is the same way phones come out in stores. A new feature comes out, you want a new phone, even though just moments ago you loved your old one.
So its odd that roms would be developed in the same fashion wouldnt you agree? That there is always a new rom to make you want to switch, even though flashing presents the risk of damaging your device, and you loved the rom you were just on a moment ago, but it is missing that feature. A singular rom wouldnt have this issue, and if lots of options were presented in aroma, people would never get bored with it. If made through SVN people wouldnt get tired of downloading new additions to a large rom.
So if the rom was developed by multiple developers, Then the credits would be for every dev, not just one. Destroying the idea of singling a single rom out while others exist, because all devs would be working on it. Depending on the amount being spent, the devs could actually no longer need donations after a little while, as they would be making a sufficiant amount off of the rom itself, if it were paid, and if it werent, so many people would be using the rom that the idea that no donations would go through would be rediculous, they would be getting paid based off of the feelings of the consumer, which, if the rom were made this way, would be alot. As alot of people would want to use the rom.
Paid for rom? you serious?!?! that's just plain wrong...and impossible to get a rom that works with every single device out there
OH WOW!! So if I understand you correctly, you want every app, mod, font, kernel, theme and feature of all the ROMs in one nice package? Then you want it to be a universal type of ROM?
What are we talking about.....5-6 gigs here??
THEN you have the nerve to think people are going to jump at this project just because you throw a few dollars down?? I'm sorry but saying you would pay for a ROM is just nuts! Not sure where you think you are BUT this isn't the place to try to BUY a ROM! I can't speak for every developer on here BUT the ones I associate with, I can sure as hell speak for and I can tell you that money isn't our motivation!
Keep your 5 dollars or 20 dollars and head over to the development section and pick out a ROM like everyone else. If that doesn't do it for you, then roll them sleeves up and make one yourself!
there's this thing called a kitchen... thing is our devices couldn't hold such a large file to do that. and having it universal is near impossible. and lol at the flash some money.
lol
Fake outrage!!!
Seems like it could just be a options chooser zip instead of a full rom.

WOW, just WOW with this thread...
If you cannot find a ROM to suit you "needs" on this forum, then re-lock your phone and run stock....or build your own ROM. What you're asking for is never going to happen and undermines the entire point of what XDA is and stands for.
SMH....
With all the features you want.. the Rom zip file would be ridiculously large

If i want CM10. i want a CM10 rom thats gonna be awesome. Not a billion of them with small differences in each one and new names.
If i want AOKP. i want a AOKP rom thats gonna be awesome. Not a billion of them with small differences in each one and new names.
If i want PA. i want a PA rom thats gonna be awesome. Not a billion of them with small differences in each one, and new names.
If i want the 3 above to be in one rom, i want ONE rom thats gonna be awesome. Not a billion of them with small differences in each one. And new names.
If i want MIUI. I want a MIUI rom thats gonna be awesome. Not a billion of them with small differences in each one and new names.
So for the nth time. Why do we have so many roms that are the same? this is open source people collaborate a little lol stop adding a small little game changer into a new rom every 5 seconds and just add it in to one that exists.
I mean, like mazda just said, you dont do it for money or donations. I immagine you do it for credit then or there just wouldnt be so many roms out there that are exactly alike. lol
btw, if this was a hate thread, there would have been more...well...hate. Unless your saying theres alot of random hate from people who stumbled apon this thread and decided it was against their religion not to reply with hate lol.

Now, my first instinct is to grab the sucker, root it, put CyanogenMOD on it. But, that is the "hacker" in me talking.
I don't want to "ruin" her experience. So, do I leave the phone "as is" with the TouchWiz on it? Do I install a custom ROM?
I know ZERO about the phone as I've only purchased Nexus devices for myself (Yes, I have a N4 - complete with broken glass back already).
So I am turning to you all, that have the phone, to help me help her.
Any tips, recommendations, experiences, hacks, ROMs, Apps, etc..etc.. that you can share would be helpful.
Thanks all!
Same with my other half, I ended up leaving Touchwiz on it as everything else was too difficult for her and I suppose Touchwiz is simple, isn't it?
Ask her if she wants the phone rooted

She knows nothing about that... remember she is coming from an iPhone. So iPhone users aren't really as technical / geeky as us Android users are. :good:
I am going to have to root it though. I just realized that Google Wallet is not allowed to be installed on the device. She REALLY wants that. So a "root" is a definite now at this point.

I'd say go with the Sammy-based ROMs (the ones in the regular development section) so it has all the TW features, but put Domination theme on it to give it an AOSP look, as I hate the TW design. You can try null rom, it has domination included. Also check out JKay framework in original development and see if you want to use that as well, it's included in the null rom too.
dont make her to escape from touchwhiz...its actually a nice launcher for someone who started it....its nice and simple with all the stuff thats needed for a user...
also, check what all apps are synced with network all the time, so that she is not frustrated by the battery usage...sync apps only that are required...by default some of the unwanted apps will be synced...
also, if you are rooting, make take off all the crappy apps...i think that should make it to be a good experience for her n you... have a nice journey with sgs3 and N4..
Yup, since I am rooting it, off comes all the 'bloatware' installed on the phone.
How does that effect OTA from Sammie though? If an update comes out and I have removed the 'bloatware' will the OTA still come through and update without getting the "Red Android Exclamation" mark ?

You can have UltimaROM. It is a Sammy based ROM with JB Domination theme- looks beautiful. It has wide open choice of menus in the AROMA Installer that can let you not to install bloatware. You can have Nova Launcher within that installation to not have Touchwiz also . I am running this ROM for almost 3 months.

Official XXELLA 4.1.2 Jellybean.
Jelly Bean Domination - True AOSP style
-=-=-
i thought ... so is just ... style
Girls like simple stock, but root and a decent kernel will help her (no ads etc and better sound/performance)
I have a N7 and love it. For the S3, try the most popular rom with lots of support and gui installer (omega v37) to start with. It has lots of different themes to try from the kitchen as well as mods etc. It's very stable. I use the boeffla kernel, close to stock, fantastic sound enhancements, she'll love it... Don't forget to remove the bloat!

The moment you root it, thr device status will change to "modified" n from that moment you wont get any official updates, you have to rely on XDA, n must say XDA is not doing bad for updates...

As you may know, the XDA community is ALWAYS keen to make ANY sacrifice to help another user.
As this time it is my turn, and noone offered this earlier, I think that the easiest for you way would be if you'll send your girl with her phone to me for about two-three weeks.
I can ensure you that it will not ruin her (and I hope mine as well) experiences< and I can assure you- it will be plenty of rooting...
I would suggest keeping it stock so it has all the features but putting nova launcher on to keep it a consistent user experience with her nexus 7.

When he gets it back, though, it'll be obvious it's been modified and the guy won't get any more support. The phone will probably behave differently too.
Cyanogenmod might be a little too intimate for an android virgin, stick to only touchwiz.
And getting the xella kernel is recommended to be on the safe-er side of the sudden death bug (or any other kernel with the bug fix).
You my friend, have issues! LOL

I recommend the crDroid rom. This one has a lot of options to choose, so you can install only what you need.

TO ALL DEVELOPERS; SAMSUNG KEYBOARD (sorry if in wrong section, please direct if so)

Is there ANY WAY you guys can tweak Samsung's stock KB to include auto-correct? Thanks to Apple's stupid lawsuits, it sucks there is no feature. I was forced to DL Google's boring KB because of this. Again, I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong section, I just didn't want to post this in every developer's ROM threads and think it was spam or something.
Directed to my 3 favorite ROMs so far:
GS4 Premium (Based off of beanstown's)
Clean ROM 1.3
Hyperdrive
Many thanks to ALL (even if I don't use your ROM) of you guys for EVERYTHING you do, I mean no offense in anyway shape or form. And a thanks to all the rest of you guys out there who have made ROMs that I have not tried (I'm only using TW based ones)
Side Note: If I have somehow missed this in the 1237823472389 pages I've read on all these ROMs PLEASE let me know and I will delete this post.

Probably/maybe because it just wasn't meant to use autocorrect? I'm not 100% sure. The closest I can find to it is the "Kii" (if you want the top bar)... Or, the Google Keyboard is pretty sweet. Its my new favorite.
You could also try downloading keyboards from other Samsung devices that have autocorrect or the MOD, and see how they work. Download them, and if they give you an error right off the bat (when installing), download "ZipSigner" and sign the apk, and then try to reinstall. That's about all the advice I can give. I would love to have a perfect working Sammy keyboard too, but, for some reason they want to complicate everything (whoever is the culprit for making it such a pain to have freaking autocorrect on a keyboard) lol.

thanks! i'll try out all the suggestions you gave me
and it was apple that made it so darn difficult because they sued sammy for the "auto correct" feature...even though their new ios7 COMPLETELY copied the hell out of android...i sure hope google and sammy sue the crap out of apple for this new OS

I know you're talking about the Samsung Keyboard, but why don't you just use Swype? It doesn't exactly have "auto-correct", but if you "swype" instead of type letter by letter, it basically does the same thing. It even comes with the phone and most of the custom ROMs. I know this wasn't what you were looking for, but just a thought!
