[Q] Replacement through Sprint; will root cause issues? - HTC EVO 3D

Yesterday, the vibration motor on my phone stopped working, so I went to Sprint, who ordered me a replacement through the HTC warranty.
I used the HTC Unlock method, therefore, my warranty is void. Is Sprint going to check this when I come in for the exchange? Or will it just be an even swap with no questions?
Thank you!

They will just swap it. I have had them swap my phone after I unlocked it no questions asked. I even left it rooted custom rom and all. Now if it was bricked that might be a different story. They might check then but not for a motor issue.

Actually, yes. He said that since the phone came out less than a year ago, they don't open any of them there. My friend actually came with me because his 3VO has a broken speaker. They told him that he has to go to the corporate location, as that is the only place that will actually open the phone without voiding the warranty, and if they can't fix it, they have to replace it.
He told me the vibration issue can't be fixed, and they have to order a replacement model.

i just put a stock rom on my phone and took it in and im not sure if they knew or not but i got a new phone

Sprint doesn't seem to care most of the techs are rooted. If it was bricked then yes they would be looking at you funny and you might have to pay a fee or your warranty is no good.

[Q] should i send in on warranty

Just looking for some opinions and advise here. Got my attic on Craigslist about 6 months back. Was plagued with reboots and having to pull battery a lot. Unlocked it and started flashing anything and everything trying to fix (roms, radios, kernels, cm7, cm9 etc) . Finally settled on neutrino. But still rebooted and froze. Installed wakelock and now works fine. Just found out phone is still under warranty with Motorola. Should I send back or live with wakelock not letting my phone go into deep sleep.
And my wife's attic was also bought off Craigslist. Hers worked great until last update (she is on pure unmolested stock not even ROOTED). Now it reboots, constantly disconnects from wifi, proximity censor issues. Should I send hers back now or wait and hope next update fixes.
My warranty up in October hers in November.
UPDATED: WIFES FIXED. NEED TO GET MINE TO STOCK
I would use the warranty.
On both. I am pretty sure will send hers in. Mine being unlocked worries me a bit. Is going to suck using old backflip while phone gets repaired. Bought these cash so no contracts but from what I have read Motorola will service without receipts.
I would try warranty on locked non-rooted phone. My personal opinion is if you root and unlock it is your problem. We all know(or at least should) the risks that are involved.

I briefly read the warranty. If I remember correctly they don't cover damage done by using other software. And since I had the prob before the software didn't cause prob. Oh and how did you get a straighttalk logo. I don't remember it being an option. 45 unlimited* rocks
Nevermind found straighttalk. Of course after I buy 2 e71's. Just for the sims they start selling them for like 15$…oh well
If you try to send it in the worst they can say is no.Watch tethering and/or laptop dock usage, I have recently received calls from Straight Talk about my data usage.Last month they throttled my data so much the last two weeks that pandora wouldn't even load.
I haven't tethered since my alltel days. Then Verizon got ahold of them. Had to go with straighttalk. Saves me about 60$ a month on my not smart Verizon plan with 2 phones

Send both in under warranty. When you unlock the bootloader is states "MAY" void warranty. I haven't heard of anyone yet being refused warranty for an unlocked bootloader. To the contrary, the forums are full of people having no issues. Some people have received replacement phones which they cannot unlock however, so it seems Motorola is trying to prevent anyone in the future unlocking again.

Send in both. Turnaround time with Motorola is actually quite fast, and they should have them two or 3 days max.
I sent in my bootloader unlocked Atrix already (digitizer issues) , but I did use a method found here on XDA to hide the unlocked text from the boot screen.
Good luck.

Sending in wife's soon. I may try a factory reset with hers first. Forgot that I haven't tried that since they updated. I don't mess with her phone much. I am going to get mine back to stock and send it in when hers gets back (only have one backup phone)
Factory reset didn't help. Sent in. It arrived at motorepair friday
Send in both.
On the unlocked one, just flash back to stock. Very simple. Takes 5 minutes. Hides the unlocked text, and "re-locks" the bootloader.
Did that for mine, and Motorola replaced it.
What's the warranty lemgth on these?
One year, but the service rep told me that on this issue if it is not to long over they warranty it anyway.

Sent in wife's phone. It should be back tomorrow. A bit anxious to see if it was fixed or replaced or still messed up. Will post after tested
You can check the service status on the website and it will tell exactly what they did regarding your case.
Good guy moto
I had to send mine in for warranty repair once, I didn't read about the proper way to unlock the bootloader back in the day. Even while rooted with a custom ROM they did a warranty replacement. Hopefully yours comes back okay with no issues.
well the wife's phone is back today. still has same issues. the ones i know of are not connecting to wifi without rebooting. proximity sensor issues. and there is a error force close message that keeps coming up. gues I call moto tomorrow. Back to repair shop in mexico hurray:silly:

If you can find any dead spots with the touch screen, that is another big issue with the atrix.

Broken Phone with T-Mobile Monthly 4G

Hey Guys,
Sorry if this has been asked and answered. I am a tmobile monthly 4g customer and I purchased my phone off ebay from another tmobile customer.
My capacitive lights just stopped working yesterday. I know this is probably a good thing! Nonetheless as we brush up against the very end of the first year the phone has been out, I'm wondering where I would go for repairs, service or an exchange.
I don't imagine I'd have any luck with tmobile, but maybe you all have a differing opinion.
Conversely, should I go directly to HTC with the issue and if so, what does HTC typically do, fix it, exchange it, replace it with an alternate model, or tell me to go pound sand?
Finally, I am presently S-Off. Do I need to S-On before taking it to anybody?
Your help would be appreciated!
Dz
HTC would warranty it in, if it still has a warranty. T-Mobile will NOT warranty it. You have to be S-On on a stock ROM and DO NOT mention that it was ever rooted or anything.

[Q] Warranty after HTCDev Unlock

I am wondering if anyone knows the specifics of the affects that using the HTCDev unlock tool has on your warranty. I did some research and I could not find a clear cut answer of what is still covered after you unlock. Will hardware defects still be covered by the warranty? For example, if the speaker stops functioning. Is a Sprint Warranty separate from HTC's Warranty?
When you use the htcdev method, your warranty is VOID. As far as sprint, they always check to see if your bootloader is locked and untampered. So for example if you bring in your phone to the sprint store with your bootloader saying 'tampered', you have no choice but to get a new phone by their insurance plan if you got that in the first place. But if the bootloader says 'relocked'(after running a RUU) , you shouldn't have too big of a problem. Just make sure the bootloader doesn't say tampered or' security warning' and you should be fine for sprint repairs.

This info is incorrect. Sprint doesn't care if you are rooted. They will fix or replace phones with hardware malfunctions. If it is software related they will require you to return to stock before addressing the issue. HTC will still warranty your phone for hardware issues just not software issues if you unlocked. But several people have reported that HTC worked on their phones even though they were rooted.
cruise is very right, sprint does not care when you root your phone, its just a matter if you have TEP (total equipment protection).
The thing is, if something happens because of a bad flash or brick and you dont have TEP then you have to pay for the device if you wanna new one.
if you hard brick your device you can take it in to the local sprint store and they will have no idea what going on with it. It will just be labled as a factory mess up or defect. and they will order a refurb for you( if you have the insurance).
Sprint doesn't care and HTC does evals on a case by case. If its a proven hardware fault, they repair or replace despite hboot status
One time I thought I bricked my phone. So I brought it to Sprint and they said they couldn't do anything to help repair it because the hboot said unlocked and tampered. I was signed up for TEP and if I didn't fix my phone by myself(which I did) I had to request for a new phone for over $150. This is my personal experience with Sprint and the info I posted above was right from sprint/htc employees. So if I was wrong, I apologize. Oh this happened last august, when the phone was around $200.

ok people...for the record...HTC DOES NOT COVER ANY PHONE THE HAS BEEN UNLOCKED, ROOTED, OR S-OFF. if you phone says relocked or tampered then HTC DOES NOT COVER YOUR PHONE EITHER. if you dont believe me, then call 866-449-8358. ask for adam. then i'll tell you over the phone the same thing that i just told you now.

*facepalm* SPRINT ( REMEMBER SPRINT...keep it in mind) DOES NOT CARE IF ITS ROOTED OR NOT. They will fix your phone for small hardware issues. But if its big like brick then no HTC doenst cover nor does sprint. So hope you agreed for TEP.
For example I say about 6-8 months ago, I went to a sprint store and explained " hey I have a rooted phone and screen is badly cracked can you replace THE SCREEN (not the phone!), please." They went to the back of the store and came back with new screen on my HTC evo 4G

Hardware failure they will deal with. Software failure I've always fixed myself. As for HTC, check the international one x forums, you will see that all those people have been charged 300+$ after sending their phone in even for software reflash/RUU if bootloader shows unlocked/relocked.

Huh. My moms screen has a single crack horizontally along her evo lte, and they WOULD NOT fix the screen. They said because it was longer than 2 inches they couldn't. Is this right, or did they just give us some bs? Definitely not paying $150 just to get a new phone, when it could be fixed for at least $35

ok. look. htc will fix any- and everything that is wrong with your phone. it doesnt matter if its rooted or not. but it will not be covered under warranty. you will have to pay for the repairs. it doesnt matter what the repair is. also if you send in a rooted/unlocked/s-off device, when you get it back, it will be stock even if the main board has to be replaced. this is the official policy. rooted phones have been overlooked before and i'm sure that it will happen again.
^^^^^ I second this. Check the one x intntl forums if you really wanna see how htc deals with warrantys

so, did you guys come to any sort of consensus here? I want to root my new HTC One but there's no unofficial method yet and you need to use HTCDev. I've always been able to unbrick every software mistake I've made, happened a lot on the Evo 4G. I need to make sure that any hardware problems that may arise are covered.
for example, my USB port on my Rooted Evo LTE stopped working, I didn't have TEP, and it cost me $50 to get a brand new phone from Sprint. That was fine, because it was less than 5 months of TEP payments.

I always thought that unlocking would void your warranty, but then I found this on htcdev.com: "It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty.".
This seems to suggest that your normal hardware warranty stays intact when unlocking your htc device.

I should add a data point here since I'm dealing with this right now. HTC told me that unlocking will void your warranty COMPLETELY. No exceptions. It seems that the people who did get repairs were most likely covered under their provider's own 3rd-party warranty.
I also read all of this stuff which says that it's only for issues related to unlocking, but they refused to budge and stated that it's in their training materials.
I tried to get them to state where this was stated in public, and they pointed to the warranty document on their website under support. Basically, skip PAST the warranty section of the document to the Software EULA, and they said that this was the passage that renders it VOID:
ANY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE THAT MAY BE PROVIDED WITH THE
SOFTWARE IS INCLUDED FOR USE AT YOUR OPTION. IF YOU CHOOSE
TO USE SUCH THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE, THEN SUCH USE SHALL BE
GOVERNED BY SUCH THIRD PARTY’S LICENSE AGREEMENT. HTC IS NOT
RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY THIRD PARTY’S SOFTWARE AND SHALL HAVE NO
LIABILITY FOR YOUR USE OF THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE.

I got the same thing from multiple people there.
Of course, the interpretation from the CSRs is obviously wrong, since that section just says that HTC is not responsible for the Facebook app that's preloaded, but they really don't care and refused to budge.
What HTC is pretty much saying is if they have belief that the damage was caused by your unlocking, they won't cover it, but if the damage is not related to your unlocking, they will continue coverage on the device.

[Q] Broken Vibration

I bought my M7 brand new from eBay and everything worked fine when I got it. Somehow between unlocking the bootloader, installing recovery, rooting, and installing this (M7 Unofficial T-Mobile 1.29.401.13 OTA GSM Deodex) ROM, the vibration no longer works. I can feel an EXTREMELY faint vibrate. So faint that i had to mute the TV and put my ear to the phone to hear it.
What can I do to try to get this taken care of?

OK so it's definitely busted. I ran the vibration diagnostic (*#*#3424#*#*) mode and ran the vibration test. If I knock the phone around a bit it comes back but never lasts more than a few seconds. Will T-mobile honor the warranty if I bought the phone from eBay and have unlocked my bootloader?
Okay, I had this problem with another phone I had (HTC Sensation 4G). I found myself with little vibrations, so faint that it wasn't noticeable in my pocket. Instead of going back to another stock ROM I left it the way it was. A few days later my speaker shut completely down, so I freaked out and installed a different ROM. Speaker didn't work, vibrations worked though. I called HTC and they told me I screwed something up in the phone's circuitry. My recommendation would be to go to a different ROM, if that doesn't work, go stock, and if you still have problems call HTC.

I reflashed my stock ROM backup I made and its the same thing. I'll text myself and sometimes it vibrates and sometimes it doesn't.
If you have it covered with insurance by T-Mobile then I see why not unroot it, lock the bootloader and return it to T-Mobile. It's sure worth a shot!

Got it off eBay. Whats the manufacturer warranty on these things?
Usually HTC would charge you a hundred something, I usually buy my phones from anywhere other than T-Mobile and still get insured by them. If you've insured your phone it should still be covered through T-Mobile. Try that first because I know to replace a damaged phone through T-Mobile is a sure a hundred dollars and not a day without a phone because it gets replaced in like 1 day if anything.

I just got back from tmobile they told me since I didn't buy it at tmobile and i'm prepaid they can't help me. I'm going to get a refund through ebay. The description stated the phone was new and defect free but it isn't so according to ebay's policies I'm eligible for a refund.
I think I'm going to buy ANOTHER M7, when I get it go to t-mobile to transfer my service to the new one, then send the old one back through ebay buyer protection for a refund. I'll be out almost $600 until the ebay refund goes through though.

Is this $20 fee documented somewhere? Although I believe you I can't really point to an xda thread as source if the guy in the store says they don't do that.
Also, I'd be out a phone during this process right? And what if HTC tells me that me rooting my phone caused the vibration hardware to malfunction?

Okay then, if you bought it brand new, you have the receipt, you still have HTC 1 year warranty. You put it back to stock, and you tell them there is a problem with your phone. The vibration is off and its too weak. Then thats it. You will be out of a phone, if they do notice its rooted, which they probably wont if you resort it back to 100% stock and lock the booloader thought I am not sure about this, you can try to argue that it started happening way before you rooted it to fix an issue they are at fault here.

If it's not working with the stock rom, I doubt switching roms is gonna help.
If you wanna try another rom, gotta start by unlocking the bootloader via the htcdev.com website.
Follow up to step 6 to get unlocked, after that you need a custom recovery then you can start flashing roms.

If after a factory reset Bluetooth is not working, I would call Asurion and get another replacement that does work... plain and simple. If it doesn't work on stock, the chances it will work on anything else are near 0, and unlocking may void your warranty, resulting in a charge to you if they have to replace it later.
