I have one wireless router in my office (Linksys WRT54G) and another wireless router in my living room on the other side of the house (Linksys E1000)
Both are flashed with DD-WRT firmware. I have them setup to allow free roaming across/between the two.
Just about every wireless device I have will roam freely between the two routers except my Transformer Prime. I can be connected to the office wireless and have a great signal, walk to the other side of the house where the office signal drops off and pick up a much stronger signal off of the living room wireless but it will not drop the office connection and switch to the stronger signal in the living room.
I know the setup is correct because my Nexus S, Evo, wifes Evo Shift and iPad2 all will roam freely. Is there anyway to force the Prime to drop the weaker signal and switch to the stronger one? Thanks!
in ICS on my phone, there is a wifi option to avoid networks with weak signals. Presumably this is done by MAC and not SSID...but it's moot as ICS on the prime does not seem to have this option.
I had a similar setup, though most of the devices in my house are stationary, so i ended up reconfiguring to an Upstairs/downstairs SSID until i can invest in a more powerful router.

Did you ever get a solution to your roaming issue? I'm having the same troubles with my TF201. It refuses to switch to the higher signal access point even if I'm standing right beside it. The only way to switch is turning WIFI radio signal off the first access point when I go to the other side of the house. My Apply iPod seems to make the switch automatically.

I updated my post above with link to a thread that discusses the issue at length. It appears to be Android OS in general; specifically, ASUS and Samsung products.
I installed MKermaniWiFiScanner-2.apk posted above and it seems to work fine. The only complaint I submit to the developer was to remove the notifications every time the wifi scans for a different signal.
I called ASUS to inform them of the problem.
Anyone else having the same issue?

Is there a method or an app that can automatically handle wifi switching between access points based on signal stregth.. like how an iOS device natively jumps to another AP if the signal strength is pretty low on the currently connected one.

I would love this to happen, I have 2 APs in my house & both my Galaxy S2 & EeePad refuse to pick up the best AP when I move about often resulting in my losing the signal.
Surely this is pretty straight forward & would benefit most Android users ?
Anyway, if anyone has an answer or can develop a simple solution I would be interested.
I'm having the same issue. I have 3 floors at my house, with cement between each floor so the wifi signal degrades quite a bit between floors. I have now setup 3 APs at my house (one for each floor) and I have to turn my wifi off and then back on the Galaxy S2 to get it to connect to the strongest AP - really annoying that Android doesn't do wireless AP switching...
Anyone have a solution for this yet?
Has anyone else had issues with the strength of the wi-fi signal on this phone? When I'm in certain areas of my house, I will have severe lag with browsing, with the People hub, etc. Music and video will stream poorly, with heavy buffering. Basically, I get all the signs of low signal. The problem is, I've never had a problem with other phones I've used, including an HD7, Dell Venue Pro, Nexus S, Nokia N8, etc.
I tested the WiFi signal in these areas, and I get back a consistent signal between 70dbm - 80dbm, so I have a moderate amount of signal to work with. Has anyone else noticed poor WiFi coverage with this phone? Should I get it exchanged?
Same. Something is definitely fishy with the wi-fi on this device. It seems to come and go, and manifests as poor or even no wi-fi capability even when the phone says it is connected to a strong wi-fi signal.
I frequently cannot get a solid Tango video call going between 2 Radars on my home wi-fi network. Pretty frustrating seeing "network problems" and getting a choppy experience when both phones are on wi-fi with full signal strength.

The Radar I have can connect to my 802.11g router no problem but can't even find my 802.11n. I'm thinking it doesn't have N connectivity...

I found out my particular problem is the Windows Phones only work on the 2.4ghz (currently used on my 802.11g router) band and not the 5ghz (my 802.11n router) band.
Now I know.
To the OP, this 2.4ghz band is usually crowded so maybe where you are going in your house, your phone is meeting with interference (land line wireless phone, neighbors wi-fi, etc...).

I don't think it's an interference issue, as every other device I own has no such issues, including 3 other Windows Phones (Dell Venue Pro, HD7 Omnia 7). And despite already using the channel with the least interference, I've tried switching that around as well. To me, there is clearly something not performing correctly in regards to the WiFi radio on this device.
So i got sick of having a crap connection on my TP downstairs in my house so pulled out my other modem and set it up as an access point, my TP wifi connects MUCH faster downstairs now and i am much happier.
I am wondering if there is a Application that will automatically switch between downstairs and upstairs connections ( Or what ever is stronger at that point )
Any ideas?
Or perhaps there is a way to make the modems appear as the same wireless connection so it can connect to both? Sorry im new to this access point thing.

Setup your second AP as repeater, then you don't have to worry about different connections.
I asked Skygunner why he though that 9 separate Primes had WiFI issues and if he thought that the common link MIGHT be his E4200 Cisco/Linksys Router.
Since he had already abandoned the Prime, selling his FREE Prime and Keyboard that Asus sent him, I guess we will never know, but his last comment to me was "There is NO WAY that this is about the E4200. ALL my other devices work with it perfectly. Okay. Fair enough, but 9 Primes, ALL failing to get decent WiFi indicates otherwise. There is just no way that those numbers make any sense whatsoever.
Here is something that may explain it. Interesting, in any case. This article came out on Decrypted Tech's Site, here are two key paragraphs. Link follows:
"Although we are not 100% certain of the issue it does seem to be more about compatibility than an actual hardware or software problem. We took a look at the issue and it seems that the largest percentage of problems appear to be with Linksys wireless routers. This is not to say that there is an issue with Linksys, but it is more of a compatibility issue with the wireless controller and the way they implement their wireless handshake. We tested our TF101 with TRENDNet, D-LINK and also with a TP-Link Access point without any issues at all.
Unfortunately Linksys is a much more common brand due to pricing (and the Cisco logo) than the other three in the US so you are more likely to see this and have it reported. Most owners will also not think that their router (that works with everything else) could be the potential source (or part) of the problem."

I too have an E4200 v1, but haven't had any real Wi-Fi issues with either my wife's 32gb or my 64gb. I have an Asus n66u on order so will see if that makes a difference.

Ive used 3 different Primes on multiple different routers (Dlink, Linksys, Netgear all different model #s) the only consistant in everything is that every single Prime hits its WiFi deadspot range sooner then any other WiFi device I own (Laptops (2), cell phone, and a Galaxy 10.1 tablet) this all leads me to with 99% certainty that the biggest problem with the Primes WiFi is simply the aluminum backing not a magic handshake.......Basically the range on the Prime would not work outside in the McDonalds parking lot but if I moved 10 ft closer just outside it would for example we are talking 5-15 maybe 20ft difference in range difference with the Prime in most scenarios.

I actually bought one of those (a V1 model) to fix my Prime's weak wifi as it has the best 2.5ghz support you can buy. It boosted my speeds in all areas but it didn't increase the range.
Linksys routers are fine, it's their firmware that stinks. Flash the DD-WRT firmware.

You've got that right. For something with the Cisco name on it, their software and support sucks far worse than another company that we know and love.

Then how come my Prime with the exact same aluminum backing has perfectly fine wifi performance? Can't be the backing.

Because you dont know how to test the wifi deadspot range or you didnt bother to test it. The WiFi in most scenarios will work just fine for most people doesnt mean the range doesnt fall off before other WiFi devices.

Wrong. The N66U and the 4200v2 blow the V1 away.

I tested it fine. Nothing wrong with the aluminium backing.
I've got a Linksys Access Point WAP610N in the doorway between my office and bedroom because reception of the extender often falls away, the extender is one wooden floor down and two foot thick walls away from my rooms.
My notebook and Blackberry have no problem connecting to the AP, my internet radio has problems connecting but once it's connected it's good, my Kindle refuses to connect and my first Prime (waiting for the replacement) rather connected to the extender than the AP, occasionally it did connect but mostly it connected to the far away extender without any problems.
The most annoying thing is that with the latest firmware the AP keeps resetting itself to channel 11 (the busiest channel) every couple of days I have to change it back to channel 4 which is the one with the least interference/other networks on it. I'm now trying to find out what a good replacement AP is but that's harder than I thought.
I've got a Linksys WRT610N router under my desk at work - having just bought my new Prime into work for the first time, it refuses to see it at all.
Disabling 'mixed mode' (802.11B/G/N) for 2.4GHz and setting it down to just B/G and now the prime sees the network and has full strength. Looks like the Prime has issues with Linksys and mixed mode networks - it works fine at home on my mixed mode airport extreme.

Apparently, you have one of the magic one out of one-hundred primes, that performs as advertised, with the exception of GPS, of course !

Yeah lets blame it.on everything except the real problem....
Shotty design and poor quality control. Myself and 3 of.my friends all bought primes around Xmas. Wifi sucked on EVERY single one no matter what make, model of access.point was used. Tested.on netgear, dd-wrt firmware routers, REAL Cisco WAPs, trend net ,zyxel, Linksys, and others.

Yup, most Primes don't work, need to be lucky to have the magic ones.
Putting it in laymans terms that everyone can understand.....THATS 100% BULL****!
I have an E4200 V1 and it works just fine. My prime works with it, my TF101 worked with it, all other wireless devices work with it. I do know it went through a firmware update but thats about it. I can connect to it with anything but the prime out in the street and get 450Mbps on my N devices.
Bottom line is the prime wifi is flawed regardless of what the reason is. Whether the aluminium back is all of it is anyones guess but its not rocket science that aluminum WILLL attenuate RF signals. My prime works fine at home where I have the E4200 and it pretty much saturates all 3500sqft. It did not work period at a hotel I recently stayed at where my laptop and crackberry had about half signal the prime didnt detect it at all.

How strange. I use the same family of routers in my house and my brother's house, on Mixed (DD-WRT firmware though) and have no issues what-so-ever. After several tests, I actually found that Mixed gives me the most reliable distance and through-put as well, so long as I keep the channels low.
I use a WRT620N (with some D-Link as the Primary, required by our alarm set-up) at my house and WRT610N + WRT150N at my brother's.

This is running the stock linksys firmware - technically it's the company's router so I've not got around to installing DD-WRT on it yet...
Hello to all, I'm wondering if other is anyway to connect my phone to my home router then broadcast that signal to my prime. So instead of using my data from my 3g I would just be rebroadcasting my home wifi signal. I think this would be a type of band aid until the prime gets some kind of fix for wifi farther than 20ft. I thought of this when I went outside and my prime had no signal but my phone did. I thought it would be nice to piggy back that wifi signal my phone is picking up on. I have a tethering plan on my phone that works fine but when I'm right outside my house I hate to use data when my wifi is simi-free.

I've been reading about mifi cards as alternative but then thought " is their anyway to buy a unlocked (I'm assuming their locked to carriers) mifi card and instead of it picking up 3g or 4g date can it be modded to pick up the closest or strongest wifi signal and then use its hotspot ability to transmit it." I'm not sure but I would assume that it would have a pretty good receiver in it, at least better than the prime in its current state.
If these are crazy ideas... I can take it I'm a big boy

What about a bog standard wireless access point or repeater, as that way you do not have to worry about connecting to yer phone?
Not sure if this I correct but is a bog standard router just a better router? Also I think a repeater would probably work I just can't seem to be able to find a battery operated small one (pocket sized). The problem I'm running into is that as a firefighter most of our firehouses are brick and concrete with steel mixed in, not the bet setup for wifi. My phone is able to pick up the wifi from pretty far away even though the signal is poor to fair but my prime is not. So I need something that I can slip into my pocket that will pick up the weak signal and boost or simply give the prime a closer access point. We rove to different stations almost everyday so it needs to be something portable. Hopefully this clears up my situation.

I think you cant connect and broadcast the wifi signal at the same time with your phone. You either use the antenna and hardware to receive a signal or you use it to broadcast but not both at the same time.

I have done what you have said but it does depend on what cellphone you currently own. I have a Samsung Galaxy Captivate with an ICS rom and so my phone is able to transfers a Wifi connection right to my prime using Bluetooth.
Also, seems that when my phone loses WiFi connection and switches to 3g my prime auto disconnects so I don't use up my 3g bandwidth.
That sounds about what I need. You don't know if its only that phone? I have a inspire 4g running ICS from the dhd board. Is it app your using or built into your phone or ICS?
I am using the method that is built into the OS.
On your Phone:
Settings -> More... (under Wireless and Networks) -> Tethering and Portable Hotspot ->Bluetooth tethering.
Connect your prime and phone using Bluetooth.
On your Prime:
Settings -> Bluetooth -> Settings button beside your phone's name -> Internet Access
Then if it works the text "Use for internet Access" will switch to "Connected to devices for Internet"
Bluetooth tethering is super slow, there are some apps were you can tether your wifi connection while connected to another wifi network.
Can't think of the name of the top of my head, maybe someone else knows..
Bluetooth tethering worked with my phone so thank you. It does seem to be a lot slower but this was a bandaid for my prime so at least it works. Slow speed is better than nothing. Cost cutter It would be nice if I could find that app your talking about. Was it on the market?
Is it possible to have multiple bluetooth connections without fracturing thoroughput? I.e. run Tablet Talk at the same time.
You might also try a USB wifi stick if you have the dock or adapter.
