Roms and textbooks - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

One of the main reasons why I got a tablet was for the purpose of carrying one tablet instead of 5+ school books.
While I am still looking for the books I want, I am just wondering if when I get them and by chance highlight them.. if I export them to my computer before loading a rom..
Will it save the highlights and what not?

i don't know if your highlights will still be there if you export the books to a computer but i dont think you really need to. I have used a couple of roms while on gingerbread and all of my annotations survived. even when I upgraded to honeycomb via globatron's method I was happy to see all of my books with all of my annotations. one time I even cleared the data in the reader app and found all of my books deleted and the books that come installed on the flyer back on my tablet (I had deleted them previously). after panicking I rebooted and was happy to see all of my books with the annotations back on my flyer. I am not really clear where they get stored (because I think I even changed SD cards during this time but I am not sure of this) but all I know is if I can't find them I reboot and they reappear automagically lol. maybe they are stored on the internal SD card which doesn't get touched when flashing.

Some of it will depend on what format the books are in. PDFs for example only saved annotations when I explicitly saved the file.

Good point. I was referring to the reader app and EPUBS. But i believe once you save the PDF file after making annotations that there isn't a need to export them to an external computer. I think once they are saved they will be able to be recovered along with the annotations upon reboot just like the EPUBS. In fact I just looked at a book in the PDF format that I annotated before I even rooted the flyer (these annotations had the fat pen issue - which is what made me root the flyer in the first place) and all the annotations are still there. So they survived rooting, placing custom Roms while on gingerbread and then upgrading to Honeycomb via globatron's method. You can always do a test on one PDF and/or one EPUB prior to installing a rom just to be sure.

At the moment I think you are better off with an IPad for school. You pick up ipad1s pretty cheap and soon iPad2s. How I wish there was an iAnnotate app for Android with the pen usage.
In one year Android Tabs have come a long way and I'm loving my view and hardly use my iPad. I doubt I will be upgrading to Ipad3 since android is tabs are getting Sooo much better.

So if you are loving your view, AND there is a means of annotating books with it already, AND you hardly use your IPAD since you got your view, why would you recommend that he get an IPAD?

I currently do not need note taking in PDF so I really do not need the ipad. If I was taking classes, I would be using my Ipad for that.

Who let the iPad guy in here? Maybe we need to review the site security
my only point is that some apps save the notifications when they're made, some require you to same them manually and some will depend on how you initiate them.
If you know what formats you are planning to work with it is easier to get more specific recommendations.

yea what's up with the IPAD guy, jk. one thing i appreciate about the flyer/view forum is that we don't get into "this is better than that" drivel. i was just curious as to why he would recommend the IPAD when the OP was asking about saving his annotations for a device that he already has purchased for a very specific purpose?

I'd rather carry my books than buy an ipad.
So please, if you have nothing to contribute to the conversation in the way of useful information, don't sidetrack the serious conversation with talk of ipad.
I am glad you happen to like your ipad, but I'd sooner not use a tablet than use an ipad. I hate dumbed down software.

back to the issue at hand. are you looking to download books into PDF files or EPUBS? I find the PDF reader keeps the format of the publication - which is better for publications that are heavily illustrated like magazines or brochures. but the epub reader is more efficient for annotating because not only can you highlight or write right on the page but you can even attach notes to what you highlighted. plus you can easily locate and retrieve your annotations as they are kept separately in its own category within each book (highlights, what you wrote, and notes)

Ah. Thanks for the heads up on that. I may play around with both formats.
Any idea if the kindle and nook apps support highlighting and what not? I've considered using them to get at least some of my books.

[Q] How does the flyer fare in scholarly use?

Hi there.
I read through the forums here looking for answers to my specific questions, but found them only partly answered, so I thought a new thread might be justified. Truth be told, the noob video kinda scared me out of posting, so I guess it suits its purpose.
So, here's my story:
I've been looking for a device to view, read and annotate digital texts and ebooks with for quite some time. I read a lot of papers (mostly PDF, some DOC and ePUB), and until now I've always gone back to printing and adding handwritten notes on the side.
So my question now is: How well can the flyer handle that sort of job.
Here's a list of jobs/things it would need to do:
-reasonably view all kinds of formats (text-PDF, image-PDF, epub, doc etc.)
-highlight, mark and annotate texts
-ability to hide/display on and export those annotations to other devices (at least windows-based systems)
-note syncing with evernote/dropbox or similar would be a plus, but storing the notes within the actual files is sufficient
I've read up on the flyer around the web, but couldn't quite figure out how well it does fit my demands. From what I gathered so far, the scribe pen notations seem to be rather tightly bound to the device, which would be somewhat counter-productive.
So I would highly appreciate it, if someone who uses the flyer in a similar fashion could comment on this, or possibly recommend a better fitting device (I have been eyeballing quite a few over the years, but none seemed as promising as the flyer does).
Thanks!
I am a scientist, and I purchased the Flyer primarily to annotate PDF files. Here is my opinion.
The native pdf viewer is adequate. It is not good, and not bad. Annotating is very easy, and overall a very positive experience. Except for one GLARING problem. The pen size in the pdf annotation cannot get small enough. Zoomed in, the pen size is so large you can only fit 1-2 words of annotation in the side margins, and you can BARELY underline txt (let alone try and fix txt in between lines). HTC "knows" about this issue, but that is all they have stated. I contacted another PDF program (eezpdf or something like that) they said they are planning on supporting pen devices in the future, but would not commit to the Flyer specifically.
It is usable in it's current form, just not as I imagined.
The ebook reader is an absolute delight. They (I guess it would be Borders who made it) should be commended. If you can/want, I would convert all your pdf's to ebooks to annotate.
The note application has some issues (in landscape mode the pen side is still too big for my taste), but it is also overall good. Some additional work could be done here with the palm recognition.
Hope this helps.
I think Flyer is not perfect for academic use because right now there are so many limitation in software implementation for the first kind of android tablet which uses active digitizer. So the problem resides not on the hardware but on the low maturity of the software.
I think we can compromise the limitations, and with some tweakings, we can become very productive with Flyer. Not just because of the magic pen, but also form factor and the speed of multitasking work with this tablet.
If you plan to do full scribble activity, the easiest way to do that is by making some empty pdf pages which can be write with magic pen without automatic saving trouble and activation of soft keyboard.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using Tapatalk
I agree with the above posts. If you're willing to work with the limited software, the Flyer is viable for accomplishing your listed task.
The pen enabled Kobo reader does a good job of highlighting, markup and handwritten annotations of epub. It does not natively recognize pdf, but there are programs which can convert the PDFs to epub for imported into Kobo. I use Caliber on my Windows machine. The conversion is fairly straightforward, but it is an extra step (saving the converted epub to dropbox is a quick way of getting the disc onto the Flyer).
The pen enabled PDF reader, I believe from Foxit, can highlight text, but the line weight is too thick. But usable in a bind. I can sign docs, flatten and return to the sender.
I'm not sure about creating a blank PDF for scribble... The auto-saving can get in the way sometimes, but it hasn't bothered me, I don't take notes non-stop though. Learning to touch the pen tip down before andor touching the edge of the note with your other hand reduces the keyboard from popping up.
As with anything you would be the best judge of the functionality. Find a Flyer from a local retailer with a generous return policy.
Hope that helps.
I bought the Flyer with many of the same motivations that you have, as I work extensively with documents. For the most part, it has fulfilled my needs very well, though I do agree with some of the shortcomings raised by other posters here regarding the PDF application.
The Polaris Office app lets you use the pen to mark up Word and Excel documents and the comments you make with the pen are then visible on your PC. If you have access to Word versions of a document rather than PDF this may be a better option as the pen width is much better. Marking up documents in the Reader app is a delight, but I can't seem to find a way to view what you've done in the book on other devices.
The only other device I've had that allowed me the same kind of flexibility was a fully fledged Windows tablet. That allowed me to do a lot more, but couldn't compare to the ease of portability of the Flyer. I think it's a winner of you have to work with documents a lot.
Thank you all for your replies so far.
I have a follow-up question though: Since the flyer has been around for a bit now and you probably all have some perspective on how the developer community is coming along, I'm wondering: Do you think there will be enough community support to keep the device somewhat viable (particularly in this specific field of usage), even if HTC is lackluster in supporting it?
There are more tablets coming this winter with pen support. So, I would say there will be plenty of roms and apps to come. Sammy, eeepad memo from Asus and a few others have them coming. Pen support is a must have for a tablet and I bet the new HTC Puccini will even have some type of support. It will be refined within this tablets lifetime in my opinion. If you are not afraid to wait and not afraid of maybe quality problems then the memo is due in December. I wouldn't though. Asus has fallen off over the years. HTC makes a good product and they support it. This pad will get better along with its pen apps. I've used the other tablets and owned two Sammy 10.1 tablets. I still came back to this one for college use.

The devs have just achieved S-off (they will be releasing it to us soonish). After, that I know we have 2 devs that own flyers and will probably be cooking roms for it.

I bought the device for the same reason as the threadstarter.
I just started my pdh and want to read a lot of PDFs when I travel or just sit in the tube, so I looked for the stylus and the annotation function. Until now (got the Flyer 4 weeks ago) Im very glad that I took the HTC Flyer, because of the size and the performance. But I have one problem with the Foxit PDF reader. I open the data and write something on it, then I save it two or three times. Until now everything is fine. Then when I want to save it again there is some kind of message, that "there is not enough space to save the data" and I cant save the new annotations. It was very frustrating, when I read a 10 pages with a lot of annotations and the save function didnt work... Has anyonehad the same experience or is there another programm (not the ebookreader trick) to annotate pdfs?
The ezPDF reader does not work with the stylus. you cant annotate the PDFs, instead you can just make a screenshot and write on it, but its not the same.
Yes, I'm pretty sure the "not enough space" thing is a bug. I sent HTC a support ticket about it. Don't know the update cycle -- maybe you can add to the complaints
Essentially, it happens whenever I annotate a pdf and save it, and continue reading the same pdf. If I annotate any more and try to save it, it will give "not enough space".
My workaround has been to actually exit to the menu with the list of pdfs after saving, then reopening the same pdf.
Ah okay, I will check this trick. This will spare me a lot of nerves, just save the annotations end the app and restart it

[Q] Flyer to make life easier as a teacher

Hi
I'm a teacher in a secondary school. I've got my eye on a Flyer just because they're the nicest tablet so far and I like the look of the pen.
From experience, can you tell me whether it'd make life easier as a teacher? I'd like to be able to run my lessons on it - that means having a lesson plan document (A4 doc file) open to refer to, take a register (again probably a doc or xls file of names but can create something specifically) and also note things like names I need to speak to or credits I need to give as the lesson goes on, recording grades and marks etc. The grades and marks sheet would be added to constantly through the year as a single document, lesson notes for credits/warnings are fairly temporary.
I'm also thinking it would be good to take notes in meetings, since I tend to make a few notes and lose them or not have a way of keeping them handy. I could scan in any documents I get handed during meetings and keep it all together.
All the docs I create and play with would need to be editable or at least viewable and sharable on mac and pc.
How are you guys getting on with yours and do you think the Flyer can help geekify my lessons and be better than hundreds of bits of paper? Or do you think waiting for the Puccini is worthwhile (I'm liking the portability of the Flyer more)
Also anyone want to write me a register-taking, grade keeping, lesson management app?!
I'm really surprised why everyone doesn't have a flyer by now =)
Well, anyone who takes notes and has to mark things up at least.
The Pucinni, yes - good. If you NEED the screen size, then I really think it's going to be the best bet. OR if you NEED to play all those HD games, then sure - it has a faster processor.
However, if you're just looking to get stuff done and you like even greater portability, then you can't go wrong with a Flyer.
You can get the MHL cable and use HDMI out so you (should) be able to basically turn your Flyer into a really good presentation tool when hooked up to a projector. Think of the pen there as your little pointer/highlighter...Which you can hide with a single tap and show again with another.
Then you can instantly e-mail out any screen you mark up...So while you're presenting and someone wants whatever screen/slide you're on e-mailed to them with all the markings (or not) you can very easily do so.
I think that alone makes the Flyer (and Pucinni) a KILLER device for lectures, presentations, etc. Hands down you can't beat it.
That said...I DID get an MHL cable and I can't quite seem to hook mine up to my monitor with it. I'm not sure why. So a little research into that...But I think it "should" work. I am using an HDMI -> DVI. So that could be why.
Anyway, as far as pen accuracy is concerned - it's quite accurate. I still would love to take more hand written notes, but I have to admit you fit more on the screen when typing...So I just find it faster to type still even on a virtual keyboard.
IF it had some sort of OCR system (like Palm Pilots back in the day or Windows devices) then it would be faster. It would be rock solid.
In my opinion, that is the ONLY thing that's missing from the Flyer. I can live without it, but if it existed, then I think the value of the device would increase even more.
I really don't know about any software for teachers...But check the Android market. Just note that not many (any really) apps are out there yet that take advantage of the pen (HTC Scribe) yet other than those that come with the device.
Yeah, OCR would be awesome though I guess it would slow everything down.
I'm thinking that I'll. use my laptop for presentations etc, this would literally replace my file of paper I have for each class. With an Office app and the pen, I'm pretty sure it'll do anything o need...

Okay... well the answer in general would be a "yes" but things to consider:
1) your eyesight: I have o problem reading a full page (letter/A4 size) on the screen but I have had people comment on how I can read something that small. Only two suggestions occur to me here. You can take one of the sheets you want to read on it and shrink it on a copier until the text area is 7" diagonally (ignore the margins, zoom is your friend on a tablet ), or if it's a matter of resolution check out an old netbook and imagine it smaller (older nettbooks have the same screen resolution, just 10" instead of 7", some of the newer ones are higher definition so be careful with that).
Office (excel, etc.) works find and can be saved. So anything requiring those can be seen and edited on the tablet as well as the computer.
The notes app is great in many ways. Yes, you will most likely never write as quickly on it as on a dedicated keyboard but it depends on your note taking style. If you jot down key points (which is made more feasible by the audio record function) then it should present no problems. If you want to transcribe an entire meeting word for word... then it most likely won't do.
Notes in the notes app are infinite in size but they can get laggy from what I've heard when they get really big and obviously office files can be edited and added to without any real limit.
And the Flyer is great for referring to notes when you need to check stuff like credits/warnings. If you include then in your lesson plan you can easily highlight them for an easier referral.
As for the suggestion for projections/presentations. Yes, a laptop might be convenient, but if you get the Flyer working then it should also work well: you can circle, underline, highlight items on the screen and the students can see it. it all depends on the specific presentation and what you'll be doing (and as Tom mentioned you can toggle all your pen markings on and off with a single tap for the "unadulterated" view of the screen.
There are OCR apps on the market though I haven't tried them so no comment (if you have an Android phone you could test them out and adjust the times needed for the OCR process according as the Flyer should be faster than most phones).
Also remember that any picture integrated into the notes app becomes searchable on Evernote. the downside is that pics in the Notes app look really small in the notes app (passable in landscape orientation) even though you can see them full size in Evernote applications as well as the website.
The Flyer can help you become more organized and deal with all those lose little papers you tend to accumulate (it's one of my reasons for getting it) although as always it will depend on how much effort you are willing to put in (although the aforementioned searchability on Evernote and such make life a skosh easier even if you're not generally organized).
WANT!
I don't need to view a whole A4 at once - I'll use it landscape and scroll.
How is it for swapping quickly between documents, i.e. lesson plan, markbook and class list/notes?
Good answer
!!11oneone,
The Flyer is a good tablet for academic people. I just recommended to a friend doing Phd. He is enjoying it.
If you open any .pdf book on the Flyer. I will auto-resize it so that the font is not too big or too small. Plus, like you said you can view in landscape or portrait.
You can also highlight your pdf he books and save it with the highlights. At the same time you can scribble on the same page you highlight and save it along using the PdfViewer provided by HTC. It is just a good tool for people you like reading, making hand written notes, want to quickly sketch an idea for future reference. Or even record voice along with hand written notes.
It is just a great tool.
Notes
I can only comment on the use of the notes feature for, well notes. I haven't used a notebook for recording meeting notes for over two weeks. I must have access to customer meeting notes and the portability of the Flyer alone versus a number of paper notebooks has been fantastic.
The audio recording implementation is good and has enabled me to reduce the volume of written notes to just points I need to take action on.
Knowing that the audio is time stamped (though not as well as a Live Scribe system) means you can also make a note about a discussion worth referring to only if needed in the future. Audio file sizes are surprisingly small.
I do recommend installing the Evernote app as well given it has better note management tools.
My handwriting is shocking, so I suspect an OCR system would fail me!
from my experience
During first days of use of my Flyer I used pen a lot and drove like crazy..but than I noticed 10 scratches on my screen and it is very hard to live with it. Don`t get why they make pen for non scratch resistant screen
Anyway I used to save my notes by default in Evernote account but somebody took my flyer just to look at it and all of my notes were gone. So, there is always risk that your notes, marks, lessons might just disappear.. I suggest you write in some text app like jota text editor or similar.. Still if you want to write it or type it and not worry about losing it, you can always send it to your email as backup..
I also used it for studying, highlighting lessons and stuff but again my screen got all scratched out.. so when I think of selling it cause its too small dont know what price I could get for what is left of it
If you dont plan to use it in subway busses..take some bigger tablet, my eyes hurt sometimes
scrolling gets boring.. I used to use 10 inch tablet and still have my Flyer so that is when I realized how disappointed I was..Couldnt read all you wrote since its 7am here.. but if you have more questions post it and Ill answer..
Has anyone noted any difference in screens between the Flyer and the Evo View? I have read a few posts now about folks scratching their Flyer screens. I have scribbled like nuts on my Evo View screen and its as clean as can be...
have no chance to try View in Serbia
I so envy you sir.. This screen is pissing me off. I thought I study from it and pass some exams but no to small for it.. eyes hurt like I said.
I guess foor students and teachers, if you would like to forget about lap top is something like 10 inch tablet with digital pen and honeycomb.. (second thing I hate about Flyer is Gingerbread..got used to it on my phone so on Flyer it seems so cheap )..

[Q] New tablet owners advice on apps/practices

This is going to be my first tablet and I was wanting to hear from the tablet vets what are the best, must have apps and what are the best practices for ownership?
Do you recommend some brand of shields for the screen?
Best cases for the transformer?
Apps that you install before anything else?
What services did you tie in and are their any tricks to using the? For example I use to use dropbox to sync many system pref between the systems by making symbolic links to the Dropbox dir. (yes, that is a very old and not usually needed trick but you get the idea.)
Are their any cases that allow the tablet to dock w/o removing the tablet from the case.
What do you think of the asus drive privacy terms? I will not use amazons cloud drive w/o encrypting the entire contents due to their privacy clause.
Splash top works well on my wife's iPad was planning to use that, then heard of asus's implementation of splash top or is there better for android? Did some searching on it and found asus is using splash top too, is there any reason to buy splashtop hd? Didn't see any solid answer on that with google.
I think that is enough of my ideas just interested in hearing what everyone has found in their own experences.
I did some searching and all I have found is threads about best app and such looking for alittle more that fotm apps. Though I think my search foo is weak, if this has been posted sorry and would appreciate a link pointing me to the right place.
Ah one more from me any brands of shdc cards I need to avoid?
I ordered a skinomi clear skin /screen protector! This will allow It to dock! I would have gotten carbon but the speaker cutout will look weird! Remember that with any case their will be a square cutout for the speaker!
I'm in the same boat as you this will be be my first tablet!
I think you should have made a separate post for the must have tablet apps!
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I think that if I ask about best apps you would need what type of app you are looking at like
What is the best keyboard app?
What is the best rdp app?
Looking for something alittle more general than that. Like:
I need a battery monitor app/widget, I personally use battery monitor widget the pro version is nices as it allows battery tracking.
Best apps change as they new ones come out or old ones get updates, but the role they fill always needs filling.
Thanks for recommendation on the cover! Googling it now.
Also posters if you see someone recommending and app/case and you know of a flaw or problem with said item please tell us your experience and how you have worked around or solved said problems.

Less than a handful can actually comment on experience with this tablet as it's not officially out yet. Less than 5 here have it in possession already. There are reads in prime section of forum that basically covers all your sections. You will want spalshtop HD as it works great with Android tablets. As far as accessories and cases goes, check out the thread called Ultimate transformer Prime accessories thread. Also look into accessories sub forum here. There's a lot of people commenting on various cases that would be good for this device. For apps, that depends on what you looking for. Productivity, entertainment, games, research, etc.. Be more specific. Now with memory cards, there's a few threads here in general section that will answer your questions on that.
I know there is a lot of b.s. Preorder threads to sift thru here in general section. But all the answers you looking for are here. They may be a page or two back in this section. I would post links but there are so many. Good luck on your search
I will start flipping back in the pages to see what I can find. Thanks for the search pointers!
Though I do know only a few here have the device but, I was thinking that for most this would not be their first device and I was not looking for experience with "asus transformer prime" but more general knowledge with a leaning on the prime. I though that most here would be more knowledge able about the spec that the asus prime would have and most tablets have hc on them.
Though you make good points and I thank you for your advice. Going into the sub forums, damn there are a lot of pre order threads almost wish there was a temp sub forum called preorder.
I can't see if find if the asus splash top is splash top had or not anyone know?
This list should keep you busy for a while.

Tablets are pretty fun to use. However, it is rather difficult to bring out a tablet in public as they are quite cumbersome and you look like a pompous asshole with it; trust me. However, the transformer series has the keyboard dock, making you look like a more practical human being.
I used my TF101 in some college classes for note taking. I used Evernote. Worked beautifully. However, I want some faster speed lol.

There was a thread talking about that splash top. I don't think the one included is the HD one. I think it's the regular one. Splash HD is the one you really want though as it has all features unlocked and better for tablets. All I've heard is great things about it though. I have it on my iPad and Atix4g.

What do you mean by cumbersome? Lmao as my iPad is light and very easy to carry around. Now for the pompous comment, I guess some could see it like that. I always get looks n comments like oh look, he has one of those iPad/tablet things. Lol. Like people who have/carry tablets are better than everyone...
Just saw the stylus jot pro it looks like pure sex in the ultimate as stories thread I am ordering one of those.
Thanks for the info on splash top I was hoping that I could use the asus provided on but hd looks good compared to splashtop

90% of what he asked was generic and the Prime's going to run the exact same applications every other HC tablet does exactly the same way (albeit faster). There might be some Teg3 optimized games but, other than that, it's just another tablet from a utilization perspective.
Here's some apps I can't live without:
Plex and Playon for video streaming
With Plex, you can store all your audio and video content on your home PC, NAS, or WHS and play it on your tablet, even over a 3G connection. It does an impressive job of organizing, labeling, and presenting your content and the tablet interface is pretty slick. I have 2TB of video that I stream to my tablet. It does a fantastic job of transcoding so the video quality's great even over sketchy connections.
PlayOn provides access to Hulu, Amazon VOD, and Netflix. It too is excellent at transcoding and actually does a better job in terms of video quality and buffering than the native apps. It's the best way to access Hulu content.
Pulse and News360 for news
Both have great tablet interfaces, sync with their desktop companions to bookmark or save stories, and can be highly personalized.
Zinio, PressReader, and Next Issue for magazines and newspapers
All have great content available and are designed for tablet screens. Next Issue content is free if you already have print subscriptions.
Read it Later for offline web surfing
Great app for finding web stuff to download to your tablet either as you see it or from your desktop PC to read later.
Swiftkey Tablet X & Swype keyboards
Swiftkey is a fantastic keyboard with excellent predicitive word logic and layout. It also has a thumb keyboard setting which is great when you aren't using a physical keyboard.
Swype has a mini-mode which takes up about 1/8 of the screen and is really fast when you're writing longer e-mails or docs.
CoPilot for navigation
Google map caching is hit or miss when you need to deviate and don't have a wireless signal. CoPilot stores all data locally and doesn't require any wireless signal to be fully functional.
TouchDown for e-mail
It's the best e-mail app for contact management and tasks. You almost have to have it if you connect to Exchange. It's got the best widgets of any e-mail program out there.
Worldmate travel companion
If you travel a lot Worldmate stores the details of your future trips on your tablet. As you're traveling it provides alerts for gates and times and any delays or changes to your itinerary. You can check flight status for any airline in real time and look up alternates if you're screwed.
Widgets
There's tons of screen space to fill on a tablet and these are some of the widgets I think are cool looking, useful, or both.
- Google Market
- AP Mobile
- CNBC
- CNN
- Pulse (multiples)
- Touchdown e-mail, calendar, and tasks
- Worldmate (live flight alerts on your home screen)
- Social Hub
- Gallery
- Kobo
- Amazon MP3
Task killers, batter managers, and the like
Tablets are different than phones and they're used differently. Android as an OS manages resources incredibly effectively. While it's a personal choice, adding things that use resources to save resources seems counter intuitive to me and I don't use them.
Half the fun of an Android tablet (vs. iOS) is the ability to make it your own. Enjoy.
Asus already included a big portion of the apps you might need for basic usage.
But here s some apps I use pretty much every day with my transformer, they re almost all optimized for tablet (android 3.0 framework)
Wizz Widget (for social feed)
tTorrent (for downloading)
subloader (for automatic subtitle downloading)
mobo player / bs player (for watching any kind of video)
File manager HD (a file explorer, better than Asus's one)
Newsr (a google reader better than google reader)
Catch note (to take and read note in the cloud, protect by password and synchronised on every device)
Google Current (offline reading of RSS feed with a very nice looking layout)
Beyondpod HD (best podcast apps)
And Adobe Photoshop Touch, Adobe Idea, Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, Picsay Pro, cause I'm a computer graphist.
Those are the apps I use the most, along which there is some usefull apps like skype, messenger, dropbox, splashtop HD, Facebook and pretty much every google Apps. (chrome to phone, translate, maps, etc etc)
Unless you're a super reckless user, a screen protector isn't going to be necessary (and is sometimes ugly/degrades screen quality). It's really hard to scratch this screen, and other ones like it.

I would reconsider. Newsr is really buggy and slow, crashes a lot and behaves very strange when you start it before WiFi is connected. I didn't find anything better though.
For me most important are also:
- ezPDF - I don't know any better app for PDFs on any system or device (great for taking notes on books or writing answers in exercise books for school).
- Writepad Stylus - for writing (not perfect, but the best I found, if you are buying Adonit Jot, you will find it useful),
The rest for me is mostly games. Cut the Rope is the "must play". Dizzy is the "greatest but probably only appreciated by fans of the original".

I agree. I've had my Galaxy S (Gorilla Glass screen, like the Prime) in my pocket "unprotected" for about 18 months now, and although I was anxious at first, I haven't noticed any scratching of the screen. Screen protectors might have been recommended for resistive touchscreens, but I don't think they're necessary with capacitive touchscreens, because the glass is tough enough already.

Weird, I don't have any problem at all with newsr. Butter smooth, fast feed load, super stable, not a single crash. Sure if you re offline it doesn't login but that's expected from a RSS reader and nothing strange happen, just a message saying that you need an internet connexion.
I wonder why you seem to have problem with it.

after 2 weeks of prime use (review)

A positive prime thread. I've had mine for two weeks now and this week was exactly what I bought the prime for. Work sent me off on a week long seminar course.
daytime, I used the prime for notes in the seminar. Running quick office HD was easy. The keyboard was able to cope with my typing speed (80wpm) and inbetween note taking I was checking email and a bit of web browsing during the boring bits of the seminar using my HTC sensation as a wifi hotspot.
Lunchtime involved angry birds, cut the rope, some comic viewing using the ACV app (awesome)
evenings was web browsing, movie playback, more games and some email, facebook use.
It lasted a full day easily, coped with everything like a trouper and was exactly why I wanted one of these things.
awesome
Glad to hear it worked out great for you. Battery life is great on this. Do you use stock keyboard or you bought a 3rd party one or keyboard dock?
I'm glad to see another positive thread about it. Hopefully more threads like these will crop up!
I'll be travelling to Dallas in about 2 and a half weeks so I will see how it works out for me as well
The flight, including layovers, is 9 hours...
Same here. My prime rocks. Not sure about all these negative reviews lately.
Maybe its a bunch of apple fanboys blasting the board to give the tablet a
bad rep... cant wait until we can get a unlocked bootloader and some roms
to really see this thing fly!
Another happy prime user here! I am a medical student and use it all day looking up clinical information and using citrix to access patient information. I couldn't be happier!
We have three people here in our firm who are very happy Prime owners. The other two are first-time Android device owners. Our units came in around the same time and none of us have had any (ANY!) of the negative issues mentioned in these forums. Not one.
Not to say those users are imaging their problems nor am I calling them liars, but these tablets are fantastic. The WiFi is comparable to my Xoom, the AGPS (thought I hardly ever use it for navigation) works fine, the Bluetooth is flawless, there is no screen tearing, etc. I have watched a movie on my train ride this morning and a show (one episode) for lunch and little but of downloading, tinkering and emailing here and there... I still have more than 50% left after 9 hours of on and off usage. I've also switched between modes while I used it.
Though my experience wasn't measured in a scientific manner, it tells me one thing: For my use, this tablet has exceeded my expectations. For what I want, and bought, this tablet for I can do everything I want to and then some. Keep in mind, I'm a long-time happy Xoom owner who is still very, very happy fond of it. My 2-year old son has taken over ownership of my Xoom which was what prompted me to buy a new tablet.
The Prime is THAT much better.
EDIT: I don't use my Prime for play only. I'm in IT working for a law firm. I use Citrix, remote administration, etc. I also do photography using my tablet to display each shot to clients rather than a laptop wirelessly. I didn't mention those because I thought that most Android tablet owners didn't buy their to use them solely as toys unlike iPad owners (lol). I just thought that that was a given. But yeah, my tablets since the Xoom has been corporate workhorses, not toys. I have every Bluetooth device paired to my Prime from headphones, mice and keyboards to PS3 controllers. The Prime is a beast.
Oh, and the other Prime owner in our firm is also IT and the other is an office manager. So I'll leave it to your imaginations what we do with our tablets. Lol.

Or maybe it's just people who haven't been as lucky as you in receiving an issue free device. Glad it works great for you guys. I wish my experience was as positive.
Oh, and wouldn't be caught dead using an iDevice!
As a curiosity about the note taking, I want to know; why QuickOffice? For me, taking notes should be something I would want to access everywhere. So why not use Evernote or similar competitors?
I find that in lectures I take long notes with Evernote, save them, and then I have to use my laptop to program hours later and I find it easier to have Evernote displayed on there.
This thing is awesome. I use it the same way I did with the OG Transformer, except it is so much faster, sleeker, and a hell of a lot better build quality.
have been using prime for over a week and found nth wrong with it other then weak gps signals but the rest are okay.
I noticed a few days ago that my GPS DOES work (I used to think it didn't, I just had to wait a little longer for it to search for satellites). So that made me happy (though i'm always around wifi hotspots and my position can be determined from that, so GPS on my tablet isn't a big deal).
so i'm guessing most if I have the dock...isn't it cumbersome to type, then trap the screen for whatever reason? And what if you need to draw something?
why bring the prime + dock instead of a laptop?
I'm mainly just contemplating in getting a dock...
I'll admit that I haven't searches to much for answers/opinions to my questions, so I apologize i'm advanced...

to clarify the note taking. I type straight into a doc file because when I go back to the office tomorrow, I need to transcribe them into a doc file to distribute to everyone.
the note program may be fine, but I need to know I can copy/paste it into word back in the office later.

Good to hear about your positive experience with office documents. I really need this feature. I had a Prime but had to return it because it was stuck in bootloop.
I'm in college and I need the feature to take notes. However, I like to add the professor's drawings into the document so office documents don't seem to work as well for this. As a way to compensate, I use NoteEverything android app. I can take textual notes, plus make a drawing and resize the drawing to what ever size I want along side my notes. Plus, when I want to review the drawing, I can blow it back up and see it in full size. You can even do multiple drawings in one document.
However, I would love to be able to do this in some kind of office document so that it is transferable. Do you have any suggestions?
You could just use google docs, since it's already a syncing app you can install on your device. You can copy/paste once you get back to a computer. (in chrome at least)
Reasons to get a keyboard dock versus bringing a laptop? Battery life... for one...
In quickoffice, you can save directly to DropBox or GoogleDocs. It's pretty sweet. I like it much better than the included Polaris because of this--though it has less formatting options.

This is my first tablet and it is awesome. I've messed with friends iPad 2's and they are just big iPod touches to me. Really toy like. My work laptop crapped out and I sent it to our IT department for repair (I can fix it myself but I don't mess with our work computers, I get enough of that at home) anyway, I've been using my Prime at work for everything I do on my laptop (i5 quad core) and the Prime did it flawlessly. I wish we would get rid of our laptops now and go with Primes. This is a great device.

I have a fire, thinking of the view/flyer

I was thinking of sending the fire back for the flyer/view, the HTC has a leg up on almost everything, however I am stuck on a few key features that the fire has, and I would like to know if there is some sort of port, or if HTC built these things in..
The fire has updates for it every few months so far, so its live, since the HTC flyer/view have been cancled, will they get updates??
The flyer/view have the "book sharing" built in, this is a nice book club feature that I like.
and the amazon silk browser has the reader view, BIG winner in my book... any way to do this on the HTC device?
I just want a handy device to read and watch some shows, prime is no big deal since they dont have what I want to see anyway, and I have Netflix anyway... I should also mention that I have a Galaxy note, so I dont "NEED" cameras or anything like that. I just need a nice responsive 7" tablet for reading/web/youtube/Netflix with a bright clear screen..
what do you guys think?
I'm not all that familiar with the other features you mentioned (book share and reader view), but as far as updates, I've found myself not needing or particularly wanting firmware updates for my Flyer. This is coming from a person who constantly changes the ROM on his HTC Desire Z phone to get better performance and features. I have never even bothered to put a custom ROM on my Flyer, the stock ROM just runs so smoothly, and has all the features I need.
I did do the upgrade from Gingerbread to Honeycomb. It added some more tablet-friendly interface layout, bit more eye candy, and much better pen support. It runs just as smoothly as GB. Really more of a personal preference, either GB or HC run rather nicely (fast and smooth).
I haven't found myself wanting anymore out of my Flyer. The performance is great, and I haven't had any significant bugs to speak of. There does seem to be a issue with GPS maintaining lock in HC (but I never use my Flyer for navigation). But of course, that isn't even an option on the Fire, anyway.
I haven't personally had a chance to compare side-by-side. But I believe the Flyer is more responsive (clock speed matters more than dual cores, for most tasks) and has a better screen than the Flyer. What you do get in the Flyer (in addition to the Prime-specific features you mentioned) is probably better support from 3rd party accessory manufacturers, as the Fire already has a healthy customer base, while the Flyer really doesn't have much to speak of.

The updates you're talking about with the Fire are overwhelmingly updates to Amazon's proprietary software, not the underlying version of Android. The updates the Flyer/View have received included proprietary changes, but they're accompanied with updates to the Android software. So it's difficult to compare the updates of the two since the nature of each are different. That said, the Flyer/View already has far more functionality than the Fire ever will do to its hardware and access to the Google Play Store (still sounds weird to say that instead of Android Market). No amount of updates to the Fire will ever get it to level of things the Flyer/View can do. The Flyer/View may or may not see any more official updates (no one here knows for sure), but it's already on a higher level than the Fire as it currently stands.
I assume with book sharing you're referring to the lending of Kindle books. You cannot do this with the View/Flyer with Kindle books you have purchased from Amazon. It's a feature exclusive to Kindle devices. You can install the Kindle app on the View/Flyer and have full access to all of your books, but you can't lend/borrow and you don't have access to Prime library.
By "reader view," are you implying that the webpage is reformatted to allow you to more easily read the text? If so, there are ways of doing this on the Flyer/View. It may require a different browser or app, but it can be done.
Overall, the Flyer/View is a more well-rounded device than the Fire from a hardware point of view with GPS, cameras, and optional cellular connectivity (depending on the model). The quality of the screens are both good, and both devices feel great in the hand (although I like the feel of my View better). The View is better from an Android point of view with full access to the suite of Google Apps (Gmail, Voice, Maps, Play Store, etc.), something that the Fire does not have (quite possibly the biggest software-related point in my opinion). On the other hand, if you're heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem, and your major concern is reading (including the lending/borrowing of books and accessing the Prime library), the Fire offers more options direct from Amazon. If you're into custom ROMs, the Fire also has a much bigger developer community with a lot more support. But as far as an all-around device for "reading/web/youtube/Netflix with a bright clear screen," the Flyer/View is by far the better device in my opinion.
For me, the answer was simple - a regular Kindle e-ink reader for books (including lending/borrowing and the Prime library) since it's far easier on the eyes anyway and can be read outside, and the View for everything else (plus I can read almost all of my Kindle stuff on the View if I don't have my Kindle close by). The incredibly low prices on both devices make owning both a viable option for many that want the best of both worlds.
"I should also mention that I have a Galaxy note, so I dont "NEED" cameras or anything like that. I just need a nice responsive 7" tablet for reading/web/youtube/Netflix with a bright clear screen.."
The screen itself should be about the same between the Fire and the View.
I was getting ready to get a Fire, then considered a Nook Tablet, then a View. Here are the main advantages of the View over the Fire:
-View has physical volume up/down buttons
-View has a microphone
-View has 2 cameras.
-View has 32GB of storage and a micro-SD slot for up to 32GB more.
-View has GPS
That's off the top of my head.
If the Fire does a good job for you with books and videos, you won't really gain anything by switching to the View.
If you want a tablet that is much more capable and runs a stock Android go for the View.

A major point that I overlooked in my post. As for the Flyer, it comes in both 16GB and 32GB varieties with the 16GB version being far more prevalent in my experience. Both have expandable storage as well.

No thats book lending.
When you're reading a book, there is a little bubble at the bottom. When you press on the bubble, it takes you into a conversation list with other people that are reading the book. Much like a book club. I think that is a neat feature.
I think the kobo at the something like this no?

No, there isn't an option for this in the Android Kindle app that I see.
That's not a huge deal...
So the htc screen wont be much better? I know the duo core thing is not a big deal, the hitch runs fine from the videos I've seen. Any word on ICS? One last thing.. can you take pretty good notes on the flyer? Is it like the galaxy note?

The screen difference will be marginal at best.
No official word on ICS.
Yes, the Flyer/View use the same basic technology (albeit from different companies I believe, meaning the Note stylus won't work with the Flyer/View), so note taking is very similar if you have the Scribe. I also had a Note for awhile and found the View to be more precise in that regard.
Wow really.. I think my note is pretty accurate, so the flyer must be nice! I'm going to best buy in hopes of finding a demo.. or maybe sprint..

They've been discontinued at both Best Buy and Sprint I believe, so it might be difficult to track down any display models in a store, especially that have a Scribe sitting there to use with it.
I've had other people contend that the Note is more precise, but I found the View to be when I had both devices. So chances are, that really means that they're both pretty similar when it comes to accuracy.

It may not be in the Kindle app, but it is there in the stock HTC Reader app which I understand is powered by Kobo. I have not used it because all of my ebooks are from non-drm epub sources so while the HTC Reader displays those books perfectly, it does not allow me to use the share option.
Anyway to read the kindle books on the kobo app? Reason I ask is that kobo has a nicer UI.
I did find a demo at the sprint store, I liked it and found the screen to he a bit more vivid, I wish I would have had the time to really check out, unfortunately we were on a way to a movie, so I had maybe 30seconds with it. Can anyone cement on the speakers, some of you have had the fire so maybe you can give me an idea of the sound quality of the htc vs the fire? I think I'm gonna buy the HTC, I just need a little push lol..
All of you have been a great help.
Just to throw my thoughts in:
I am a college student and I have an internship in an office. I bought the flyer at the beginning of this semester to take notes and other various things at my job. I have used it for a few months now, and I can say that I don't even carry a notebook any more. It has also fully replaced my netbook. I have read several books for class on it, and it has worked well as far as that goes. The speakers are pretty good quality, I find them acceptable for Skype calls and YouTube videos.
Sent from my mobile typewriter with tapatalk
the flyer/view has basically one of the greatest displays for reading for its highest pixel density of android tablets (ipad 3 has a much higher resolution tho), and great color production for things other than reading. i love my htc flyer, and i would recommend it, the reading experience is still fantastic even if it lacks fire features, because htc adds their own (such as book sharing, as you mentioned)!
Similar Dilemma
I'm in the same boat, torn between fire and flyer.
For me the flyer was an extra $40, so is $40 worth:
bluetooth
2 cameras
512meg extra ram
8gb extra storage
microSD card reader
a microphone...
Normally I say, yes, of course it is, however of those, the only one that actually matters to me... might be the microSD card reader and extra storage, seeing as the fire only ships with 8GB.
Why are those other features not important to me? Because wherever I have my tablet to use, I will 100% of that time have my iPhone 4 in my pocket which has 2 cameras, 32GB storage, a microphone, etc. If I want to take a picture, i'll certainly use my phone before my tablet, same with skip or voice notes, or voip for that matter. If I had a stupid phone, of course I go with the flyer, but with an iPhone, maybe I stick with the kindle fire...
Another consideration is rom updates, yes flyer is popular, however each rom needs to support all that extra hardware, and often one piece either uses an older/supported version of android, or one piece just doesn't work. For example bluetooth for voip, or the hardware buttons of the flyer. With the Kindle it doesn't have much extra hardware, so not much else to support, therefore the rom updates that come out are more "clean" in my view.
I'm forcing myself to use both for a few days this week and make up my mind. The stylus could turn the tide to the flyer though...
We'll see...

You are 100% in my boat! Lol the flyer will cost me about $50 more, and you and I have the same train of thought. I have my galaxy note for EVERYTHING, and with me, my gnote is almost as big as the tablets of topic! Lol
I found the speed to be more or less on par with these two tablets. And the htc reader app is a joke, the fire has a better "reading" atmosphere with the ability to change font and word spacing, and the silk browser reader view is a BIG home run.. I still can't shake the feeling I should just get the flyer.. lol

The Kindle books are DRM-protected, so unless you want to find a way around that (something we can't discuss on these forums), you have to use the Kindle app for Kindle books.
The Flyer/View have pretty darn good speakers for the size of the tablet. I can't think of a time when I wasn't more than satisfied with them.

You don't have to use the HTC Reader app (although you can adjust the size of the text in the app). There are several different e-reader apps in the Play store that let you adjust font and spacing (and I know the Kindle app will at least let you adjust the font). But the biggest advantage to using the HTC Reader is that it has full integration with the Scribe pen. On Honeycomb, you can use the Scribe with any app, but you'll only be able to use some of the advanced functions of the pen with apps that are optimized for it.
You're definitely right about the Fire having a better "reading atmosphere" though. That's its primary purpose (along with watching video), so Amazon has put a lot of significant thought and design into it. The Flyer/View is very much a multi-purpose device, with the focus spread throughout the device instead of on just a couple areas like the Fire. That's why for people who want a device that is primarily going to be a reading/video device with most of the content coming from Amazon, the Fire is definitely a great option. But for those who want more than that, the Flyer/View offers many more options.
I just won a like new htc flyer with case and scrib pen for $212 shipped..
Dude, demonoid has all the books u need, the flyer reader app supports the pens and its unbeatable bybany other tablet, om taking notes all the tome, signing documents etc
