Touchscreen doesn't work well when in car mount - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I have a frustrating problem. I have an Atrix (AT&T, NOT rooted, running LauncherPro, no cell phone case). I have loved this phone until today. Here's what happened:
I just bought a dash phone mount (ProClip) and it holds the phone wonderfully. It is a plastic mount with groove sized to hold the phone snugly along its left and right edges, with some support on the bottom corners so it can't fall through the mount.
The problem is that the touchscreen is awful when it is in the mount (meaning only my index finger touches the phone. I downloaded multitouch visualizer to confirm what I was seeing, that the screen registers maybe 2 out of 5 touches, with some of those registering as double taps. Swipes register intermittently as well, often registering as single touches somewhere along the swipe path. The phone is nearly unusable in the dock when I use just one finger to tap the screen.
HOWEVER, when I pulled the phone out of the dock and am held it as normal, the touchscreen works wonderfully, just as it has for the last year. So I put the phone back in the dock, and instead of just tapping the screen with one index finger, I rested my other hand on the back of the phone, and wouldn't you know, the touchscreen worked perfectly again.
So my only conclusion is that the capactive influence of the phone being held makes the touchscreen work. Just touching the screen with one finger with the phone in the mount makes the touchscreen register touches poorly.
Is this normal behavior? Can it be fixed? I'd really like to be able to use my phone in the mount. Thanks!

I use the Motorola cardock for the Atrix and i don't have any issues whatsoever.
maybe part of the dock is touching the screen and the phone registers that as a touch?

Do you have it plug into a charger? If so try leaving it unplug and see if it still behaves the same way. You may have to use a different car charger such as the stock one. My phone will act funny if i have it plugged in to the wrong chargers.

Thanks guys. I did more tests. It doesn't seem affected by whether or not it is charging, and the mount doesn't touch the screen. It almost definitely has something to do with how being held in hand affects the phone's ability to detect the capacitive touches on the screen. Almost as if the electrical effect of the phone being in your hand makes it easier for the touches on the screen to be detected. The thing is, it doesn't even need to be held. It just requires one finger touching the body of the phone and the touches on the screen register normally.
My interim solution is to just touch the body of the phone with another finger while touching the screen. But if I knew more about why the phone acted this way I might be able to mod the mount or a phone case to take care of the problem.
The weird part is that the phone does okay when placed on a wood or glass table, which aren't particularly conductive, but it fails in this plastic mount. Maybe the plastic mount isn't conductive enough? I don't even know if that makes sense, but it is all I can come up with.
Thanks for the help.

Solved the problem with grounding.
I had the same car mount problem with the capacitive star A5000.
I put some aluminium foil in the holder so it touches the back of the phone and taped the other end to the dashboard.
Now it works nicely with one finger.

[Q] Phantom Taps

Is anyone else having an issue with phantom taps on the screen. I know sometimes my screen will pull up the keyboard and start typing. Or if I am scrolling a web page it will think i'm zooming. Or if I go to click and hold a link in dolphin it will just click.
yeah while browsing i had the same problem, maybe some bug that will be crushed after an update.we have to bare with this in the meanwhile.
I'm reading on other forums like the Nook that a screen protector may help fix this.
Plugged in?
Does this only happen when the flyer is plugged in? I had this problem when I was trying to use the flyer while it was plugged in and it just started doing as it pleased. The first couple of times it freaked me out! It just started typing crazy stuff and started navigating from screen to screen as it saw fit every time I went to touch the screen. I thought it was demon possessed (some kind of ouija tablet), but I didn't call a priest I just unplugged it and all was well with it's formerly possessed soul.
.
I have a problem when It's plugged into the power. Scrolling pages sometimes zooms and buttons can activate if my finger is just close to them.
In some countries like here in the UAE, the combination of badly earthed mains, leather-soled shoes or bare feet on tiled floors and a very sensitive capacitive screen causes strange tap response.
Ever held a charging phone or laptop and felt a slight electric buzz??
I usually find if I clean my screen and remove any finger grease, it tends to work fine after that.
Also, even if not on power, I have found a problem with tap and hold (say to trash icons) that if you press the screen too hard, the hold does not 'hold' ... If you use a light tap it works fine.
Large finger surface area on hard press seems to confuse it.
It happens when it's not plugged in.
My screen was so sensitive it would open apps, etc. even when my finger was 1/2" away from the screen. It was frustrating. Cutting down one of the matte, anti-glare screen protectors I had left after I returned my Galaxy tab solved the problem.
I bought some screen protectors of Amazon... Thanks for the input... its the only downside to this thing :-D

[Q] Digitizer issues

Hello everyone. A few months ago, my phone screen broke, and I replaced it. Ever since then, my digitizer has been funky. When I turn my phone on the top half of the screen is static and the bottom half is black. It shows a bunch of moving parts (the boot animation) then goes black. It also prohibits me from using Amon Ra which is my favorite recovery because the whole thing is static. When I press the power button after the boot animation, my homescreen is on & my phone is fine. I broke my screen again (don't judge me lol I see you looking at me with that face ) and instead of putting ANOTHER screen on, I bought both the screen and digitizer already put together. So last night I lost all touch capabilities of my digitizer, when I did swype it did the mark of satan by itself (possessed rezound?) and overall was just terrible. I opened it up, cleaned up the ribbon, put it back, and 95% of touch worked. Did the same thing today and 100% works, however, I still get the weird static-turn-on thing. I assume it's the ribbon port for the digitizer..so my question is, is it possible to clean that? I was thinking with a really soft toothbrush w/ alcohol on it but I don't wanna ruin my phone for good. Thanks in advance

Use what i do for computers. Take a new pencil, never used eraser, and use the eraser to clean the connectors. take q-tip with alcohol. brush across it, and fan it dry. about 2 minutes is good. Alcohol dries pretty quick. Hopefully this works for you.
I have been having some problems as well. I replaced the digitizer myself and the phone boots up completely fine and normal. I just have some "dead" spots on the digitizer which I cannot seem to calibrate. I have tried apps and everything. Is there anything I can flash through recovery?
Has anyone come up with a fix for this?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] No Screen-Urgent

Hep needed pronto!
My wife dropped her S3 & despite having a cover and screen protector, the glass screen shattered but phone was fully functional.
I got a new one from an ebay seller and removed the broken glass successfully following this youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITFHge38Pig. Unfortunately, I was too zealous at the bottom end and sliced through the menu return flex cable. However the phone was still operable.
I got a new flex cable which I installed as per this youtube video last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o59-_9PPaZ. After connection of the cable to the motherboard, the phone was reassembled, powered up and display, touchscreen & menu buttons illuminated and functioned correctly.
I then removed the residual screen adhesive with the help of a little, heat cleaned the touch screen and placed 2mm adhesive strips as per the video. All was going great or so I thought. I placed the new glass screen, again gently heated all around the edges the soften the adhesive, placed a screen protector and powered up. To my horror the phone booted giving the samsung tune, menu buttons illuminated but no display. The touch screen works as clicks can be heard as do the menu/back buttons but no display. I have taken the glass off and reversed all I did and reinstalled but still no display.
I have tried installing kies and connecting but I keep getting device driver & connection errors (windows 7) as I read I could get the contacts and data off. Do I need to be logged in somehow in Samsung My Phone? I do seem to be able to see the faintest of images from the lock screen so perhaps the backlight or inverter have failed.
Therefore has anyone any ideas as to why I've lost the display when it did work and also why kies is not connecting?
I need answers before my wife slices me up wrecking her phone!!:crying:
Thanks in advance,
Geoff.
Too much heat is the most likely cause of the screen death, less is better with electronics. Your contacts will be in your Google account and I believe you may be able to extract data using adb pull in download/recovery mode (you'll need to search this as I've not tried it myself).

Issues after replacing the LCD assembly

Due to damage done to the LCD of my S II I had to replace it. So I did that and I noticed two very serious issues. The first being the unresponsive touch buttons to the bottom right and left of the device. They were also not illuminated, there was also no evidence to suggest they were not connected correctly.
The second issues and by far the biggest is the unresponsiveness of the touch screen. When I enter my pin the first touch takes a few seconds to respond, then it proceeds to work as normal until the phone is unlocked. From that point whenever I try doing anything it behaves erratically. For example when I dial out it is painfully slow to respond to the inputs given to the touch screen.
Is there are way to address these issues and remedy them if so how could this be done.
Looks like a bad piece of hardware. Did you get the spare part from a trustworthy store? About the softkeys, you could check if the connector is connected correctly. As a workaround, you could use onscreen buttons.

S7+ screen way too sensitive

Just got a new Tab S7+, and I found that I was getting a heck of lot of repeating keys from the Samsung keyboard and the Gboard keyboard. Hadn't noticed any problems elsewhere.
I finally got fed up with it and get Touch Screen Test, and I can see clearly there that the screen is registering a touch with my finger maybe 0.5mm away from it. That fits with what I see on the keyboard, where I can get keys to fire with tiny finger movements just away from the screen.
I can't find any settings in Android 10 to adjust this. It's surprising for a table that's been out of the box a couple of weeks, and possibly it's worsening.
I had an idea after I'd posted this - I often use the tablet connected to the 25W charger that came with it. If I use it on battery, the problem is much diminished , and possibly gone. Electrical interference, then???
Is it a return-as-faulty, would you say? Any test options I can use to help with this?
Thanks
Alan

Many thanks for that. My tablet has T970XXU1AT12 / T9700XM1AT12, no update showing as of a moment ago. I expect it will reach the UK soon and I will be able type!!
I think the touchscreen of this tablet does have some interesting behaviors, as I've also observed some touches being registered when my finger was a still a short distance away. I suspect this might have something to do with palm-related gestures (like palm swipe from right to left for screenshooting).
I play rhythm games on this tablet mostly, and I'm seeing some cases of taps not being registered properly (unexpected misses), which happened less often, when I was playing those same games on my phone (before migrating them to the tablet).
I don't constantly put the tablet on the charger, as I've lessons learned from my previous tablet, Pixel C, whose battery went swollen after having placed it constantly on the charger for quite a long while that I ended up replacing the swollen battery with a new one by myself. While it was a lot of effort in overall, but the swollen battery had made the glues between the screen and the chassis mostly visible, that removing the screen became much easier.
I couldn't confirm this issue.
I've installed a safety glas on top of the screen. Fingerprint and S Pen is working but I've no issue's with a to sensitive Display
Update came yesterday. Still not fixed
I'm also using a tempered glass screen protector and my personal experience with such protectors on different devices has always been positive, with few issues directly related to such protectors as long as the quality appears to be good enough. I don't connect the charger while gaming, but I do attach a Type-c audio cable for connecting the tablet to desktop speakers.
On the other hand, some lower quality charging cables would certainly cause issues with touchscreens regardless of device. Usually with stock chargers and cables (or those from very reputable vendors) you can mostly rule out this possibility.
EDIT 6: Moved the rest of the issues I'm having to a separate thread.
