I recently switched roms and lost the Avatar launcher and the Sims 3.apk.
I know you can open Avatar through the gallery but that's not as good for showing off.
Can anyone send me a link to download them, or maybe rip them off your device?.
I really miss them.
There are many ways to solve this.
First, is search the forum.
Second, know something about his, download a stock rom and pull it for yourself.

I am having a similar problem trying to install Avatar. I am running Bionix Final - Sims 3 installs fine, Avatar is a no go. I tried to copy it into /system/app using Root Manager - rebooted and it still does not appear... any ideas?
I don't really know, I'm still a noobie to this android stuff. I just pushed it into system/app/ using ADB, and it worked for me. I'm using fusion 1.1.

Is that Bionix a Froyo build?
I've posted a modified Avatar.apk that looks for the movie in the proper location on Froyo ROMs. It's tested on Onyx ROM, but should work on any Froyo ROM. It's here if anyone still looking for a workaround about this and the apks posted above don't work for you.
On avatar it says application not installed...? Also when I download it where does it download the file?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I get a file not found when launching the avatar apk. I'm running macnut12. Hmmm, maybe I deleted the movie in the internal sd by mistake. Reverting back from a stock froyo (e.g. Eugene's unofficial froyo) through Odin should fix this issue. Am I correct?

Is that directed at me? Do you mean on your phone? Downloads from the web should end up in a folder called Downloads on the internal sdcard. From there copy with root explorer or adb to the proper location (/system/app)
Sims 3
When I had this issue I had lost the entire Sims 3 game and not just the launcher. The second post only includes the launcher apk, so I will attach both. I am only reattaching the launcher just in case the one posted somehow does not work with the launcher posted prior.
FYI - I pulled these from my stock dump I made before I loaded my first custom ROM, and from what I have heard they will work ONLY on the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 and nothing else.
It may not matter, but I think it is best to install them in order. Also since the max upload on apk (for me at least) is 8Mb and the game is 74Mb I am putting them into an archive first and doing an external link, so you will need 7zip or something similar.

These are standard APK files. Basically they are Android installer packages. What to do with them or how to install them are basic aspects of using Android. If you plan on using an Android device as anything beyond a basic consumer device you should take the time to understand these basics because putting them here is beyond the scope of this thread.
This should help.

So do you have a T-mobile Vibrant SGH-T959? It absolutely will not work if you don't.
Did you install both APK files in the correct order for Sims 3?
Are you using a custom ROM? It may not work in all ROMs. If you are using a AOSPish ROM like Macnut I don't know if it will work, because AOSP is built from the (Android Open Source Project) and not from Samsung/T-mobile firmware.
I have only tested this to work on Bionix and Auxra ROMs myself.
I have a samsung vibrant... I am using android 2.2 i have no custom rom installed.. do i need to rename it are something. what is the order of the sims 3 apk. can u list a step by step instruction list on how to do this..

Something is wrong with your statement. Maybe I should have been more explicit in my questions. This only works for US T-mobile Vibrants. It is an exclusive item that was (non-exclusive version now available in the market for $4.99 http://www.appbrain.com/app/the-sims™-3/com.eamobile.sims3_na_qwf) only available on US T-mobile Vibrants. This package only restores Avatar and Sims 3 for those who lost it, it does not provide it to those that should not have it.
Here are the problems with your statement:
You can not be using a stock firmware and also be using 2.2. Sorry you have to pick one as T-mobile has not pushed a OTA 2.2 out yet. This is not for Bell customers or other non United States phones.
There is no reason for you to have lost these packages if you are not running a custom ROM as they are not uninstallable.
So as you can see, there is something very fishy with your story. If you are just confused and not lying about your situation then you are running a custom ROM or you would not have lost these. In this case try re-downloading the files, use the link in my first post (Post #13) and you would have to be really confused to not figure out the order to install because they are numbered. If it can not parse these then either your download is corrupt, you are missing one of the two installs, or phone is not a United States SGS-T959.

I have just realised that editing a file that is used in a LINEX enviroment in Wordpad isn't very clever - no wonder it's not working
Could somebody tell me how I can remove the Wordpad file association and how I need to edit it so that Cygwin can recognise it?
Sorry for my stupidity...

I know this is covered in the FAQ's, but I have been over the installation, and am 99% sure I have done nothing wrong in installing cygwin. I followed the readme and the picture guide, and am getting very frustrated...
I only want to get the kitchen working...
(after that I'll go and hassle the guys in the wildfire forum!)
Just delete your entire cygwin dir and re install and all should be good.
By the sounds of it you did exactly the same as I did. Mines all sorted now after a re install.

Not sure what you are asking. For the sdk tools, do you mean the android sdk? If so, follow the instructions on the sdk page. For the images, I assume you mean the boot.img and possibly system.img. You do not open these. If you have a system.img, that means you probably have a shipped rom. Use the kitchen to create working folder from rom, and choose this. It should auto extract the system partition. As for the boot.img, you don't generally need to extract this, but there is an option in the advanced settings of the kitchen. You can change your rom's kernel in the boot.img.

Hey Guys!
First of all a bit of encouragement. The android kitchen sure as hell does not turn you into a rom developer. I decided i wanted to use the kitchen just over 2 weeks ago and run ubuntu in a virtual window. From then I decided I did not like windows anymore so installed linux as my main os and had to learn that (trust me getting the graphics card to work was a chore) I finally got the kitchen working tonight and decided to sign up to xda. Even with my limited knowledge I have been able to help someone on here tonight. Read Read Read and ask questions if you can not find the right answers on the forum. Research pays off eventually. (I now softmod nintendo wiis professionally from learning off a forum!!!!) Remember everyone has to start somewhere even if you are a noob and don't get disheartened if someone says you should have read this this and this. As long as you learn from ur mistake I'm sure people wont mind too much.

Here's my advice for those looking to make their own Android ROMs.. Stop. Write an app or two first, learn how the system works from a developer standpoint. Learn some Java. Read the developer documentation. Learn how to use Git. Then learn how to build AOSP from source. Read the porting guides, and learn how the build system works (the links below have almost everything you could possibly want to know). Now try to put your new found skills to work on enhancing the platform by writing code or making theme overlays. And share! And put that **** on your resume. There is a *ton* of information out there but any kind of "step-by-step rom cooking guide" is going to be a complete fail- it's too broad of a subject.

The PDK site is absolutely vital if you are going to work on custom ROMs. Read every single page. Twice. Some of the info isn't up to date, but you'll get a really good idea about what goes into actually configuring Android to work on a real device.

What version of Linux are you running? Are you running Ubuntu? I never had much luck using the Android Kitchen in a virtual environment for some reason. When I installed Ubuntu as my main OS, however, that made all the difference. From there you'll also need to make sure you have the Java Developers Kit (JDK) installed or at least open-jdk (Open source alternative) installed in order to run the Android Kitchen or the SDK for that matter.
There's a really good tutorial on how to set up the SDK on Ubuntu 10.10 or Ubuntu 11.04 which is what I had used to set up the SDK on linux for the first time. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921169
I prefer 10.10 just because I'm not huge on Ubuntu's newer Unity interface and my old laptop seems to run 10.10 a lot better than 11.04 or 11.10 but that's another story.
Once you have the SDK setup, you can then run the kitchen accordingly.
I use a tool called Android Utility by tommytomatoe which is essentially a collection of tools for creating custom ROMs, editing apk's, etc. It just happens to also include dsixda's kitchen which is a nice plus. You can download that here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/3303-utility-android-utility-apktooldex2jarsmalimoremac-linuxoct09-2011/
Hope this helps. Good luck, dood!
**Edit** My bad... There's also a thread for Android Utility on XDA also....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167623
Hi all,
I'm trying to setup an Android development environment on Linux (Ubuntu)
The instructions I follow atm you can find HERE
I've downloaded and unpacked the Android SDK but trying to install I'm stuck.
It's probably very easy but for me coming from MS Windows I need to get used to all these new terms and commands. :cyclops:
The tutorial clearly explains the following:
'On Mac or Linux, open a terminal and navigate to the tools/ directory in the Android SDK, then execute android sdk.'
I've opened a terminal venster but how do I execute?
Sorry for my very noobish question but any help would be highly appreciated.

How to add new device in dsxida kitchen?
what do you mean by that ?
we just add new rom as a base in it
in kitchen there is a folder called
original_update
copy the zip file in that folder, open kitchen and select first option of setup working folder

You can't just put the zip file in original_update. Kitchen has to be configured for your device, or it will not work. I'd like to know how to do that as well.

OK then, if it isn't necessary to configure the kitchen for your device, then how can you make it work with your device? I am just a NOOB, let's make that perfectly clear. However, I followed the directions to the letter, and read up on the kitchen before trying it. I had no success using the kitchen to create a rom that I could successfully flash.
I thought that I would have to do something with the edify defs files first, adding my device before it would work. I just never got that far yet (I only play with this part time, when I have a chance to do so.) If I don't have to add my device, and you have some idea what I may have done wrong, please enlighten me. I obviously need the help. Thanks!

You put any custom ROM for your device in there, configure it for that file (meaning that show it the file you're working on), replace it's system folder with the stock deodexed system folder.
Now, you're ready. Do your modifications. Add features. Build. Zip
Now, the important part.
Kitchen updater-script doesn't work on our device in some case. Use any custom ROM updater-script (with permission and credit), and voila!
There is a complete guide on it in Development section too.

I have tried the kitchen with my phone before, (LG Spectrum/VS920), and the ROMS generated by it will not work. It has something to do with the "edify defs" file I believe. I read it somewhere before in these forums. If your device isn't supported, it has to be added, or at least that's what I've come to understand. If someone can point me in the right directrion (adding my phone so it is supported by the kitchen), I'd appreciate it greatly.
