Plug in the phone, go to settings > Wireless and network > USB Utilities > Hit Connect storage to PC.
Your storage will mount as a mass storage device.
Or Settings > applications > development > Enable USB Debugging, this will mean the phone always connects in mass storage mode rather than MTP (kies) mode.
thank you. It worked

guys, big issue here
On my wife's phone, she tried to take a picture and all of the sudden she got an error "sd card is being used as mass storage". now she cannot locate any of her files on the internal storage. as a matter of fact she doesn't have sd card. I checked under settings > storage and all I see is usb storage avaiable & used is at 11.50 gb.
also all backups are gone
can anyone help?
That happens when the phone is connected to your PC, if the PC is using it then you can't see it on your phone.
1. Make sure you aren't connected to your PC via USB.
2. Reboot the phone.
3. If still no joy then try a factory reset (there are probably other ways to fix this, but this is the simplest and noob friendliest way)

That solution worked perfectly for me (reboot). Thanks.
Hello guys
I have some issues after i updated my phone to xwki4 firmware.
When i connect my phone to the debugging mode access my files to phone memory and sd card after i disconnect it the phone will restart it self when scanning for files added or removed.
The restart issue will happen even if i just plug my phone in debugging mode and without accessing anything disconnect it.
Using Kies the phone will work fine when i disconnect it.
Anybody come across this issue and solve it?
hope you guys can help me out thanks.
me too having such kind of problem... any solution???
same issue here. using DXKL3 official firmware update via Samsung KIES.
anyone got any idea?
I had the same until some minutes ago..
just were getting some space in the external sd, and went to the "LOST.DIR" folder and there were some files, went to the same folder in the phone sd and is was empty, so I deleted the files of that folder in the external sd, and it worked for me
I recently purchased the AT&T Samsung note from a friend who accidently bricked the device. I flashed the device using ODIN and a tar file which brought the phone back to life. Now the phone allows me to make phone calls, text and install apps from Google play but i cannot access the Internal or External SD. The option to format the usb drive is available but nothing happens. System storage shows i have 1.85GB and USB storage Unavailable. I have tried searching for a *.pit file for the I717 but no luck.
I flashed the resurrection remix rom (Jelly Bean) on my sgs2. By accident I formatted my INTERNAL SD CARD (phone memory), while I thought it was y EXTERNAL card. All my holiday pictures are gone. Stupid, I know, but happened without being aware of it. I know there are several programs to retrieve them back, and I've found some. However I can only select to scan a hard drive, whilst my pc says my phone is a "portable device". the program does not show "portable devices" only hard drives.
I remember when I was still on Gingerbread and I connected my phone to my PC it always showed as (indeed) a mass storage hard drive.
Can anyone tell me how I can let my PC recognize my phone as a hard drive ?
Thank you for all your prompt replies

Here is the situation:
My friend broke her Galaxy S2's screen and she wants to retrive her pictures from the internal SD Card memory. Simple right? Nope.
Here is the real problem:
> The computer does not detect USB Storage
> Tried connecting the phone to PC using ADB. It works, but /sdcard and /sdcard1 locations contain nothing in them
> Phone is stock everything from ROM to Recovery
> Cannot fastboot install custom recovery
Phone Info:
> Samsung Galaxy SII (FroYo 2.2.1)
> Not rooted
> USB Debugging disabled
> Screen locked (PIN or Pattern hence cannot load USB storage)
Does anyone have a solution for this?
Thanks!
No chance. Replace the screen & see what happens.
