is the atrix lapdock compatible with the razr?
Yes, but not without modification because the connectors are backwards. Search and you'll find threads on this.

Go with the Lapdock 500, just got one from the Verizon store for $267.

Just got my razor today. Love this phone already. Also i have the atrix dock and extended the cables to work with the photon that i had and now the razor. Defently get the a500 if you want a dock. I spent 40 for the cables needed
It depends on your budget and needs.
The Atrix Lapdock had been available for $50-$70. Now it is more like $130. You can modify it at no additional cost to work perfectly with the Razr. You have to reverse the connectors and shave off a bit of plastic. It takes about 10-20 minutes and requires no real technical skill.
That said, the 500 works right out of the box and has a better keyboards and bigger screen, a VGA out, webcam and Ethernet port. It weighs 3.4lbs.
The Atrix dock has a 11.5 inch screen, weighs 2.4 lbs and has some ergonomic issues (track-pad a bit sluggish and the screen does bend back as far as I'd like.

So I am on the fence between which one to buy. Besides the price point and the mod for the Atrix lapdock, are there any differences between the two? Does the Atrix mod keep the photon securely in place when docked? Are there any hardware differences?
TIA
Julian
Atrix lapdock requires modification. According to someone who posted in another thread the Bionics doesn't, but the Photon doesn't sit on it perfect either. There is talk of the Photon getting it's own lapdock, maybe it will even be cheaper.

Thanks for your reply. Yea I was the one that confirmed that the Bionic lapdock works with the Photon and although I know it does not sit flush with the dock, the phone is secure.
I was wondering if there were really any differences regarding the keyboard or mouse pad for the two lapdocks. Anyone have any input?
I ended up getting the Bionic Lapdock. So far so good. I actually went through 4 Bionic lapdocks before finally getting one that did not have a defect with it. The first three had dead pixels. Luckily the Verizon stores were kind enough for me to try all their stock. I cleaned out two local Verizon Corp stores of the lapdock stock since all of them had dead pixels.
BUYER BEWARE: Please try using the actual lapdock you are going to buy before committing. you never know if there will be dead pixels!
Other than the occasional lag and the insane palm sensitivity of the track pad, i love this thing!
**Hint: When typing a long post such as this, you can temporarily disable the track pad by tapping on the white led twice. tapping twice again will activate the track pad.
Well I got my Atrix Lapdock in last night and swapped the ports around and have some initial impressions.
FIT:
Photon does fit snugly but you have to be careful because the ports do not line up exactly. If you notice the videos people have posted you notice that they have to wiggle the Photon to get it to fit. Well once I saw that I immediately took it apart and placed a very small piece of hard plastic under the USB port. To lift is to the proper angle. Once I did this now the Photon slides into the dock very smoothly it’s not perfect and hangs every now and then but it also does the same in the cardock.
PORTS:
I have seem numerous posts where people have asked about swapping the ports so the Photon would sit flush. Well sad to say it’s not possible. Two things make this not possible. One the ports on the Photon make the phone where with either method the phone will stick out. Second you would have to cut the hole larger on the Micro HDMI side to fit the USB which would cause the port to wobble and not sit properly.
SPEED:
As other users have posted it is not the fasted in the world. But this may be attributed to the fact that from what I have read one core is disabled on the Photon. Also I notice on the Phone Mirrored screen under notifications it shows. " This device is not optimized to work with the Lapdock model" now everything I have tried has worked and mind you has worked well. I would compare this to my old HP 1000nr netbook in terms of speed. I am running the latest update with Webtop version WT-1.2.0-160.
SOUND:
The speakers seem to work well. I would compare them to be as loud as say an Ipad or Touchpad. You also have the option under settings to use the phones speakphone if you prefer.
SCREEN:
Well the screen is very crisp and the videos I played seems to look very nice. When I blew up the phone screen I didn’t notice much pixilation and everything looked nice. But then again I am not very picky and as just as happy with a 720p TV as I am with a 1080P.
BATTERY:
Will have to update on this later since I’ve only had it for a day but it is very nice to know that you can use this and your phone will be charged when you pull it off.
CASES:
Photon will not work in the lapdock with any cases currently avaliable. I have a case that i cut to fit in the cardock which it works in the cardock but does not work in the lapdock.
If you want something small to throw in a bag and send a lot of texts or emails this is great. Will work for web browsing but it is about as slow as a netbook so at time you may be frustrated.

I am going to wait the several weeks until the Motorola electrify lapdock should be out. The Electrify is a photon twin announced by U.S. Cellular, so there should be no worry of the photon falling out when you move the lapdock. As noted on another thread, the elctrify lapdock was confirmed by U.S. Cellular.
I ended up buying the bionic lapdock and I'm loving life.. yea I spent $300 on it, but it was worth it =)
I want to pick up the lapdock 500 for my razr but it has been sold out for some time. Does anyone have an idea when it will be back in stock, maybe friday?
I'm curious, did you ever see a price it will be? The 100 is $199 so I guess the 500 will be $299?

Mmh... Personally, I don't like it at all. It's sized like a laptop and it's ugly.
If I want a laptop with me, I'll take my Toshiba with me.....
I'm happy with the first Lapdock for ATRIX: small, light and good battery consumption. I'll use it for RAZR too.

Yes here is the link for the verizon page location. I sent them an email and they said it is available in some stores but no date on when it will be for sale online.
I can look tomorrow to see if we have one if you'd like.

i think buy the 100
small = portable!
Are you kidding... Like a month ago i wasted like $370 on a new quad core desktop that I barely use.. I generally just consume media and really have no use for an os like windows7. Hell, I'm just gonna give the computer to my mom and get a sweet HD monitor and get this dock.

Indeed, that is pretty sweet!
You can get the lapdock 500 from Verizon website now.... got mine today. I was told that they would not be available in stores.
Ordered mines...coming in 8 hours....and counting down..
One day later...
Got it in. Will upload pictures later tonight. Lovin this new lapdock.
I do not know about the 500, but the 100 has a dull and blurry display. Not worth $65 I paid for an Atrix lapdock, yet alone $200.
I suggest getting the Atrix lapdock, even at the current highest price of $147 (can be found for less):
Display is very sharp and has good color, unlike the awful 100.
The 11.9" display seems a good size and more portable than the 500, plus at least $100 less.
USB ports work great with 64GB thumbdrives and mice.
VZW should have had the connectors of the Atrix lapdock modded and sold it.
Only catch is a little mod of the dock.

I'm also happy with my Atrix LapDock, paid $99 shipped from eBay. I just pulled the 2 connectors out of the unit and plug them in my phone that way. It's flat (the 500 is not), it's thin, and I like the 11.5" screen size, same size and weight as my Macbook Air 11.

Could you please post some pics of the arrangement . Thx
I just traded my Bionic for the Razr and my first impression is WOW!!! i was concerned it would be too thin, but this phone feels VERY solid and nice in my hand. It's very fast and I love the AMOLED screen, people really need ot stop thinking this phone has the pentile display, it is a gorgeous AMOLED. I just wanted ot give my first impression,,,
Thinking of replacing the bionic as well. I threw my droid x off a wall a week early, so I had to get the bionic in the meantime. Have 14 days to return it so I must go see the RAZR in person. Thinking that the display is probably better, like the thinness, but not so crazy on the non removable battery.
i agree about the battery, but i have a charger at work and in my car, so it won't be a problem for me. Even if the battery doesn't last all day (I've never owned a droid that did anyway) this phone is well worth any sort of trade off. I'm serious, this thing is super thin and super fine. And it's not a flimsy thin like the GS2, its solid, like holding a solid piece of glass...
Played with a razr at big red earlier and must agree the screen is really attractive. Snappy too! Overall I may just trade my x for it. Sbf here I come!
Giggity
My RAZR will arrive to me on Monday.
I agree about the battery thing, everytime I buy a device, I also buy two backup batteries in case I need them.
Anyway, I'll see if I may need a mini portable battery charger (battery to battery)....
Oh, I also have a Motorola Lapdock for ATRIX that can be used as a backup battery.. haha

Unfortunately that won't fit (unless you use a micro usb extension cable. )
The connectors are swapped. RAZR has the same connector positions as the Bionic.
I just ordered a mini HDMI cable from Amazon this morning. But I'm not entirely sure what I will be getting.
I'm using Paranoid Android (ICS, CM9) on my phone, but I don't think it touched the webtop partition. The official webtop coming in ICS from Motorola looks cool, but I'm sure I don't have that. So will I just have HDMI mirroring, or what? My wife's Electrify is pretty much stock, so anything I'm screwed out of for unlocking and using an ICS ROM won't apply to her phone.
(Electrify is Photon minus WiMax/4G, and US Cellular branded; otherwise, same phone.)
Even with the official ICS update all you will get is mirroring as WEBTOP3.0=TABLET MIRRORING. Except for Moto specific apps there is very little difference between the two.
photon needs micro hdmi not mini.

Yep, I'm screwed. I ordered the wrong cable. Didn't know there were 3. Maybe Amazon will let me return it; if not, the mistake only set me back $5.47. That plus what a micro will cost will still be fair.
But I mean, I won't need a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, or dock, just micro to HDMI and I can run Android apps on my TV?

Everyone loves Monoprice, but their prices are 2-3 times or more what Amazon charges. Their prices are great compared with the store, but they're not the cheapest around by far. And my wife's not amused that I wasted five bucks on the wrong cable... Although I see now that my camera requires Mini HDMI, so maybe we'll hold onto the cable. We'd have to eat the shipping cost anyway, I'm sure. Not that I need an HDMI cable for my camera, since my TV doubles as my monitor, but at least the cable isn't useless.
Now I just need an HDMI hub/switch. Second-generation HDTV (if you consider the CRT ones to be first, mine is flat panel but also only 720p) only has one HDMI port. Oh man, Amazon slaughters Monoprice here! Monoprice's cheapest is $24.65 for a 3-in, 1-out switch, but Amazon has one for $9.04. Ouch!
with monoprice you get really solid cables, the cheaper ones are a gamble half the time.
Sent from my mopho
So it's the Monster argument but on a smaller scale? Pay more and the cable works better, or don't pay as much and risk getting a dud? I see a lot of reviews on Amazon saying the cables are fine.
If the HDMI cable on Amazon doesn't work, I'll buy one on Monoprice for 4 times as much, and I'll get it in green, and consider the $1.65 a lesson learned.
no, monster claims better performance, monoprice only makes solid cables that won't have a short in them. I wish you nothing but the best though.
Sent from my mopho
While it was a display port cable, Amazon allowed me to return it with free shipping... however I have Amazon Prime so I got free shipping to begin with as well. No money lost on my part.

And, for me at least, the gamble has always been worth it to save 50% - 75%. I have no experience with monoprice, so entirely possible that I would find their prices quite acceptable.
In my experience, in the real world electrons really are very non-picky. Give them a path from A-B on a reasonable guage metallic conductor with reasonable quality connectors. It is that simple.
As I posted in another thread, someone did a double-blind test with a soldered string of dry cleaner hangers vs. Monster speaker cable. Nobody could tell the difference!
in the large quantity I've bought, I've had quite a bit of doa cables, just a hassle id rather avoid, but paying monster prices is just stupid.
Sent from my mopho
Well, I got the cables, and the mini HDMI is indeed the wrong one (not that I doubted you guys). And the HDMI cable works. No dud. $1.65 got me a cable that works. I'll take that luck.
Photon didn't get an official ICS release. We're talking about Moto's ICS that they've been advertising, and rolling out for other phones, like the Droid RAZR. You can find it on YouTube on Motorola's channel, and it's probably been posted around XDA as well.
Finally ordered a proper micro HDMI cable. The mini HDMI cable fit our camera. We never figured on using the feature, but now we have the cable and it didn't even cost that much. No real loss I guess.
Got the Micro for $2.58. Amazon again. Free shipping again.
Disappointing.
I'm running AOKP right now, and all I got was mirroring, i.e. whatever was on my screen showed up on the TV. However, rotating it rotated it on the TV, but it stayed within a portrait frame, making it sideways. There's apparently no way to fill your screen, at least not that I could tell.
I'll test my wife's phone later. Locked, not rooted, and even running the stock launcher. Complete vanilla Electrify running Gingerbread, 2.3.5. Should be the same as an off-the-shelf Photon.
Much cooler on my wife's phone. Seemed to look better on the TV, and rotation worked. Looked kinda crappy (stretched). Played Asphalt 6 -- much cooler than playing it just on the phone. Still a crappy racing game though.
I suspect it not working well with the JB ROM is due to lack of drivers. So if you updated your Photon to 2.3.5 and you're sad that you can't unlock, know that you at least have this advantage, such as it is, over those of us who did unlock. And take advantage of it, I got the cable for under $3.
I designed a desk dock for Razr Maxx HD that can be printed at home with a 3d printer.
This may be compatible with the Razr Maxx and can be adapted to any phone with very few modifications. If a version for the Razr HD is desired, I can get the measurements and make it happen.
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:34668
The only thing I'm missing is the USB ID pin resistance. I've posted a thread asking about it; if nobody can help, I'll see if I can find it using a resistor box at work next week.
