Android spyware? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Does this happen and how?
After I installed the official grupon app from the market I have been getting notifications every time the phone is powered up from being completely shut off for ads. It's weird as hell. Uninstalled the app but the ads keep coming. It's not a huge deal but it is annoying. I'm sure a full wipe would fix it. but I would like to avoid that if possible.
anyone else expedience anything similar, and if so how do you fix this?

Are you using go launcher?

I got my first one of those tonight. I have flashed my phone maybe 10 times but this is the first time it appeared. I flashed the latest KH7 version of Unnamed.
I would like to know how this happens, too.

Yes I am... Is that a problem with the newest release?

This has happened to me as well. I did a full wipe and it went away. These is probably some file that has been kept inside the phone to allow ads. If so, then its probably stored in a "residue" folder as I call them. Which is kind of like traces of an app. If there is none then a wipe will be necessary. Have you tried rebooting the phone? Or clearing the cache?

I'll clear cache now and see if its persists.
EDIT:
Ok just cleared my cache, wiped dalvik, battery stats and am repairing permissions in the recovery now. I'll let you all know what happens.

I have never had one of these notifications until tonight as well. I received it right after I had installed go launcher. First time using the launcher so that was my "calculated" guess. I rebooted after seeing it and it has not happened since.
Edit: are the three other posters in this topic using go launcher?

There are apps on the market that will tell you what it is....just search for Push notification something will come up..... illegal downloader apps are usually the culprit ...and its definitely not GO launcher they are on of the best group of Devs without question.....I have been using Go for 2 years pretty much exclusively and NEVER had a problem.

Have you uninstalled any apps you suspected? If so reinstall and launch it, and then run the Airpush app or whatever one you have. After it scans try uninstalling the app through the system settings....manage applications>clear cache then clear data and then uninstall. Thats how I cured my wife's phone when she was downloading music from MP3 Music downloader.
If that don't work you have a real good reason to reflash

I get those ads too. For me the culprit is from mp3 free downloader. I just ignore it cause i love the app.

Wow. Surprised no educated member decided to help. These are push-ads. They're generally caused by shadier developers of apps on the market. If you install an ad blocker from the market, and one for push-ads you wouldn't get these.
A better solution is to read what you download first, so you KNOW if the dev uses push-ads so you can avoid those apps to begin with.

[APP] Slightly themed Visual Voicemail 05/05/11

Hey guys. Its been a while since ive posted anything, so i figured id share this small thing i did.
I was absolutely sick and tired of the home screen of tmobile's visual voicemail app. I thought it was absolutely hideous, so i went ahead and changed it, along with a bit of the button framework. Also the launcher icon, so its not pink anymore.
nothing major here, just one of those little things that might make your voicemail experience just a weenie bit better. enjoy.

MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THIS AS A THIRD-PARTY APP, NOT A SYSTEM APP. IF IT REFUSES TO LET YOU INSTALL, YOU HAVE TO FIX PERMISSIONS, WIPE CACHE/DALVIK CACHE!

Im running trigger 3.1. I remember it gave me a little bit of an attitude when i first tried to install it as well.
Are you trying to install it as a system app? because that could be why. I remember I wasnt able to do that, which is why i noted to install as a third party app from your sdcard. but if thats what youre doing, then i have no idea why it wouldnt work.
Ive uninstalled older version and downloaded this on to the sd card than tried to install as a 3rd party app and all it tells me is not installed

OK. No one else has reported the issue expect for you two, and youre both running Trigger 3.0, so I guess we can assume that it doesnt like the ROM...which is VERY odd. In fact i almost refuse to believe that, because realistically, any app that i can run as a third-party app, you should be able to as well.
unfortunately i dont have a solid answer.
only things i can think of is use root explorer, go to /system/app and just double check to make sure vvm-signed.apk (or something like that) isnt there. also go into something like titanium backup or system app remover, and make sure it doesnt show up. theres a small possibility that there was some data left behind, which you could wipe with titanium.
these are the only things i could think of
I don't know if it has anything to do with it but there is an updated version in the market. I can't install it on Trigger 3.2 Final.

yah that wouldnt have anything to do with it. This modded version is based on the VVM apk that came with Trigger 3.1.
if its working on my phone, theres no reason why it wouldnt work on anyone else's, regardless of the ROM...this would indicate that the people who are having trouble may not be getting clean uninstalls. It is a very odd issue, but all i can advise is make sure there are absolutely no traces of Visual Voicemail anywhere on your phone.

Yes, I fixed permissions. On Trigger 3.2 Final, the Visual VM is vvm-signed.apk and is in the \system\app folder. I tried to rename it, then totally deleted it. Tried doing a normal install = fail, then a push to \system\app. Is there some other folder to try? Wi;; you be updating to the current APK? (assuming I can get it to work!)
how do I install as a third party app? Mine keeps saying it is a system app.
Thanks bro it helped. I was making a mistake lol Awsome tweaked APk

You could try using the market doctor in Titanium Backup.
I have exactly the same issue...
Changing rom, titanium market doctor, different markets, full wipe, factory resets, full partition formatting... Anything is solving the issue...
I've managed to get my apps some time but it only last for a couple of days and then went back to nothing...
I haven't found a solution yet and I do think is something related to the android market database.
I've also installet 4ext manager (free one) and when I've tried to upgrade it to the pro version available in market it doesn't allow me to install it as app appears as if I have already bought it but I've never do it before so download is canceled as I have never paid the app and I'm not offered to pay for it.
It seems we have a new Android Market issue.
I've contacted some people at the android market to explain my issue but they told me as that I have a custom rom they can't give me support.
No solution found yet
At least I'm not alone I guess. I tried the market doctor, I'm on Miui and normally update weekly but didn't this week, so it's nothing I've flashed that could be causing it. It worked yesterday morning, then yesterday evening I had nothing. Very frustrating

MIUI has these random issues. One mainly that it breaks GPL laws as well as random issues coming from being translated from Chinese. I would try and see if it works on CM based roms (it should as i dont have this problems nor has anyone on my team.)
Since I've used MIUI, I don't see many app what I bought, so a can't reinstall that. On PC market shows these app as bought, but it says my device is not compatible.

Yeah its a known issue as the device shows as a china device which the google market blocks as it is not allowed in China.

Did you changed your screen density? Otherwise you can try to change your build.prop to show up as a different device.
So what can I do? Is it depending for the translation ? I'm using hungarian translation, with hungarian settings. Do Google not see my provider? Is problem with build.prop?

Media Hub APK

Does anyone have the latest media hub apk for ATT GS2? I'm using a custom rom with an older apk, and now it tells me that I need to update to use media hub, but when I go to update, Market shows nothing. I think it has to do with compatability, media hub does work on my rom tho.
I'd appreciate if someone can post the apk, or pull it off a stock rom =D
Thanks in advance

I tried with a space, but no luck. I think it has to do with the fact that it is a samsung app and I'm guessing it's programmed to show up on market with TouchWiz. I'm not running TouchWiz. And from what I recall, when I was on UnNamed, it used TouchWiz I think.
Any thoughts? Is there a way to force Market to show all apps, regardless of what device is being used?

For some reason the GoogleEars.apk said something like "a signed version of this app is already installed", but I ran all three apk's and the widget works for me.

Also, don't have to be rooted and this is like shazam or soundhound if you didn't know.

Never used google ears before but Google Now will also identify music now. Think they just updated it. Just say "Whats that song?" When listening to music. Works great for me.

Good to know. This is a one click widget and I've caught the end of a song a few times with it, where soundhound and shazam seemed to take a lot longer. So I wanted it on my home screen.

There's a modded version in the android section of xda that keeps a history of the songs identified.

I tried to install that and got an error. I uninstalled mine and tried again, still wouldn't work. I tried to reinstall mine but it wouldn't work. I rebooted and still can't get either to install again. Any ideas?

They need to be put in system. Read the other thread

I'm not rooted. I do not have access to the system folder. do you have any other advice. It seems that because I tried to install that apk I unintentionally broke my ability to use Google ears.

You need to fix the permissions on the apk

Click to collapse
you dont check every box you need to make it look like mine and reboot. Which is why i posted that screenie. This really isn't difficult but I know a majority of people are just use to flashing **** in recovery. Take it slow.
1.Download modified GoogleEars.apk listed here.
2. In Root Explorer open up system/app and make it R/W
3. Delete the existing GoogleEars.apk and GoogleEars.odex IF there is one I can't remember.
4. Copy the modified one you downloaded from step 1 into system/app
5. The permissions need to be rw-r--r-- My screenshot shows how to do this in RootExplorer
6. Once permissions are done REBOOT and you should be golden
If that still doesnt work delete all of the GoogleEars.apks (The ones in sdcard/Download and system/app off of your phone and start again.
I really don't like writing directions for something as simple as this but good luck and let me know if you have anymore issues
Ill give that a shot, thanks for the reply. I didn't realize the permissions worked like that.
I have been tinkering with windows since I was 11 in 95. Learned basic and HTML soon after. Working on an electrical engineering degree now. Taking Java next quarter. I've played with Linux a bit, but still have a lot to learn. Thanks for the Intel.

Just did all of that still fcing. Tried workout deleting all of them including reboot. On boot it said upgrading Android, I had hi hopes but no luck. Deleted all Google ears from system and sdcard downloaded from the op from your link. At permissions like your screen shot. Rebooted. Still fcing. Any other place I might need to delete from? I searched Google ears the other day and it only returned my sdcard and data/media/download. When I deleted from sdcard they were no longer in data media so I assume it is a mock of sdcard. Not sure why this isn't working for me but it sucks haha.

I wonder if it's a ROM issue with Jelly 'Beans'. I'm on my own version of stock and it works just fine. I'm sorry you're having such a time with this. I'm (slowly) doing electrical engineering as well.

I just got an update for the app and all the sudden it works

I'm using Super Manager and the attribute changes wouldn't stick on GoogleEars.Apk. It keeps reverting back to the old attributes being all check-boxes are check-marked.
Just go download Google Sound Search. It's what replaced Google Ears. Gives you a nice fancy widget and everything.
