Unofficial Asus Thread - How To Update To ICS Manually - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

If you want to update to ICS manually, you must follow these steps:
1. Download the file from Asus (Select OS:Android > Firmware)
2. Take out the zip that's located in the zip u downloaded (DON'T unzip the second zip which has a file and folder, it should STAY in zip format)
3. Put that zip into the root of your TP - you DO NOT have to have an SD card to do this, placing it in the top-level or root folder of your Prime's storage (ssd) is JUST FINE.
4. Disconnect your Prime if it's connected to a computer. Your Prime should have a little triangle in the notification bar - HIT THAT.
*5. (If No Triangle) Restart your Prime (make sure it's disconnected from the computer) and when it starts up it should have the triangle in the notification bar.

hi
Worked. I downloaded did it manually

I have ICS already but missing some system apks that will bork any future update from what I hear. Can I install this on top of the one I have now so that I can recover missing system apks?

I was able to do that with HC. I was missing g+ and was able to re-install the manual update and it replaced the system app.....though you will need to unroot using voodoo rootkeeper before doing it.

Thanks for the heads up! This solved my missing system apks! Worked like a charm

Anytime! In the future you can use root explorer to copy the system apk from its folder and back it up onto your SD card......this way when you see an OTA coming you can just replace it back....... just in case they don't post the current build....

Did ics solve unknown serial for anyone?

Too bad there is no German version yet

Just to clear things up: All this stuff is (semi)official, right?
Which means by installing ICS manually I wouldn´t loose warranty, right?

What would happen, if I install an US SKU on my german tablet with DE SKU?

nothing, it doesn't work.

Really?!
Bummer.

I wonder if anyone can help? I didn't delete anything, my Prime just
fails the update. I am rooted. My device says I have an update, the
update starts but, after a few seconds, the Droid guy falls over with
the red warning triangle. In my Settings it says, the update failed, you
be brought back to your original configuration.
Also, I'm not having any luck with the download link. I tried on my pc
with IE, Chrome and FF. When I click the link for the download I get an
error msg.

hey guys,
thanks for this post.
can anyone please telle me what version of the prime I should have to download which version of this link? http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Eee+Pad+Transformer+Prime+TF201&p=20&s=16
I read something that German primes are not possible to be upgraded to ICS.
but how do I know if my prime is a German one?
thanks, greetz

Goto Settings->About Tablet. Scroll down to Build Number. If contains ".DE_epad-", you're screwed for the time being.
Otherwhise use the corresponding download from Asus (WW, US, TW).

Not possible. See http://www.android-hilfe.de/asus-ee...am-sandwich-update-ist-da-25.html#post2571025

so there is so far no way to update a german tf201?
is there an announcement that it will be possible some day?

[Q] Over the air updates

I'm sorry if this was posted somewhere else, but I searched and nothing came up. When you root your phone does that mean you no longer can receive over the air updates? Or is that only if you have custom ROM's installed? That being said, is the ROM that you install to gain root access considered a custom ROM? Sorry... I feel like a n00b but I had to ask. :] Thanks

You can unroot and update, but be warned a lot of the time an ota update will also correct the current exploits that were used to achieve root access. If you are rooted it's usually a good idea and easier to flash a ROM that includes the update already. The developers get a hold of the source codes a few weeks before VZW actually pushes it to your phone and you don't have to wait for jcase, unrevoked, or whomever to find a new way to root if the ota breaks root access.
Hope this helps"
I was searching the same thing earlier bro and this is the answer I found.
Does this mean if I don't delete bloatware and just freeze it, then I can still get the updates? I read that article and I didn't see them answer whether or not getting an OTA update would take root off. Thanks for the response!

No the point is if you root, have SU, and/or a custom recovery, the update will fail.

Good deal. Thank you for the info.

So if I'm reading this correctly, a corollary is that if you intend to root but haven't, its likely a good idea to do it before the OTA is pushed, or else you'll have to wait for the developers to figure out how to root the new one?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
More then likely any important updates/fixes/etc will turn up in ROMs anyways.
so how do you disable updates?

try this it works
only difference for you will be lines 4 and 5
look for your current ro.build.fingerprint and change it to the current update...
oh and also don't forget to delete the update from your cache
If you are comfortable editing the build.prop then follow these directions.
Directions:
1. Use root explorer and navigate to /system
2. Mount as r/w
3. Long press on build.prop then click on Open With then Text Editor
4. Find the line ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I510/SCH-I510:2.3.6/GINGERBREAD/FP1:user/release-keys
5. Change FP1 or FP5 in that line to FP8
6. Press the menu button on the phone and click on Save and Exit
7. Mount back to r/o
8. Reboot phone

I attached the file for more info.
mine reads:
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/SPH-D710/SPH-D710:4.0.4/IMM76I/FI27:user/release-keys
do I change the FI to something else? if so this change will not brick my phone? this is my only cell connection to outside world.
the download system update that wants to install is a FL24 is it because the phone knows FI the FL will not install?
You could just rename otacerts to otacerts.bak and then rename updater.apk to updater.bak.

what disconnecktie recommended "You could just rename otacerts to otacerts.bak and then rename updater.apk to updater.bak"
is that safer, not sure where to find those files? I am doing titanium back. but i do not want to go through the hassel of reloading everything back on the phone.
Either way will work but the otacerts and updater both just catch ota information when it is sent out. You aren't deleting anything so it is impossible to brick from it. The otacerts is in /system/etc and the updater apk is in /system/app or course. Use a root file explorer like es file explorer and mount system as read/write.

and to be clear the process is?
go to /system/etc then rename otacerts to otacerts.bak save it

how long does that change last if they are pushing the update wont it just come right back?

Bootable Root SDCard 1.4.0, 1.4.1, 1.4.2

I expanded on Indirect's bootable root sdcard and create an image that includes a update.zip image. The purpose of this is to root your Nook Tablet so additional software can be installed from the Android market or other sources. You will need a Micro SDCard that is at least 2 GB. If you want to add additional applications, flash this image to the sdcard then put your sdcard in the computer, open up the update.zip file and add your applications to the data folder. This has been tested on 1.4.0, 1.4.1, and 1.4.2 and everything works. Once your nook tablet has been root, you can reformat your sdcard from within the nook and use it as you normally would. Remember, if you have to do this again, you can just reflash the image to the sdcard.
This will add the following:
root
superuser
gapps
unknown sources hack
ez file explorer
adw launcher
Home Catcher
Home Manager (allows you to switch between launchers easily)
BHT
busybox
NT Hidden Setting
GetJar
Amazon App Store
Slashtop HD (Free from getjar)
Unzip file
Flash the image to an SDCard greater than 2GB
Power Down Nook
Put in sdcard
Boot nook
Choose "Apply update.zip from sdcard"
When it is finish, remove sdcard and choose reboot.
Thanks quid246 for pointing out an issue with the permissions.

What came first the chicken or the egg? Let me try...
1) Indirect creates the 1.4.1 SD Card root method
2) Indirect enlists the help of brianf21 to "finish what he started"
3) Indirect disappears from the thread never to be seen again
4) Albert creates his SD card thread
5) Brian takes his work and creates a thread where he has control of the OP
Is this close? As someone who has been on this site pretty much everyday for a couple of weeks now I "assumed" that Albert's cards were simply Indirect/Brian stuff packaged with better instructions. Is this true? If not I apologize.

Indirect asked for help in regards to adding the unknown sources hack and in addition to that, I added other apps and your BHT binaries and busybox. Indirect, had one zip for root and another zip for GAPPS. This does that and more. So, it was more then just one line. I assumed Albert and Indirect were working together on their zips.
Just did update today. Only thing I noted was clockwork update did not give me load update.zip directly. Ihate to select install.zip then point it to update.zip.
That did work just fine.
Thanks
Just for clarifications sake. I have had a compilation thread on rooting with SD cards as new processes have evolved since January 11th at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630. This includes your work brian and others and all credit has been given. I have shot video tutorials and hosted my own files. Also, Indirect and I do not work together on zips. Everyone here works independently, unless otherwise specified. I sometimes mention "we" when referring to developers in my videos because I am talking about the community. So, no, indirect and I do not work together on a single project. We have become friends since we were the first ones to achieve root together and document it, He did not have a nook tablet and I did, we shared my desktop over the net and he programmed the root while I controlled the tablet. We also talk occasionally over gtalk. Other than that... This is why I posted that this thread looks familiar, because it did look very similar to the thread I already created.

Looking at your files, it looks like you were able to perfect many flash file errors that were previously causing problems. I do like the setup you have but I am confused on why you are forcing the end user to partition 2 gigs. That file is huge and takes forever to generate the image. Just a suggestion.

Brian, were you able to include the live wallpaper hack? and the keyboard hack? this is something that was left out of the SD card root method and was included in the original zergy hack.

Originally, I did not have an sdcard to work with so I just create an empty file and mounted it as a sdcard and worked with that. A lot of people were having problems so I went out and picked up a 2gb card so I could test it myself. At that point, I just dd'ed the sdcard to create the image. I can make it smaller for future images.

I noticed that it doesn't always mount the /sdcard. If you mount the sdcard from within CWM, then it will find the update.zip. Why this happens, I do not know.
Good stuff. Worked perfectly
This is about the third one of these things I can't seem to get to work.
Before, it would randomly boot into CWM and then abort when I tried to install something. Now, with this file, I can't even get into CWM. Driving me nuts. I put the damn thing on the SD card after unzipping it, is it just giving me hell because I put the nook through a factory reset trying to get the other file to flash correctly?

Partition your sdcard using this instrutions boot into CWM wipe data, advanced> dalvik cache and you're good to flash a new ROM like CM7>> it formats system while installing so you dont have to do that, if you go back to stock do the wipes, its better to start fresh when you flash a new ROM.

Lost root, can't side load with NT Hidden Settings app on
I just noticed that in the past few days my NT upgraded from 1.4.0 to 1.4.1 even though I rooted with the method in this thread and turned off ota updating with the NT HIdden Settings app. So it's looking to me that this is not actually turning off the ota's. I just thought I'd mention this so anyone using this method uses another method to block updates.
A report on new 8gb tablets. Shipped with 1.4.2.
Tried every method out there: all of these methods out there result in the stock factory recovery prompt.
I just tried this out after updating to 1.4.2, and it works successfully (16 GB NT), so I suppose you can change the title to 1.4.0, 1.4.1, and 1.4.2 . I used the Win32DiskImager from indirect's thread to flash the image to my SD card in case anyone is still unclear on it.

I would like to opt out of the alleged ota. I renamed my otacerts.zip file, is that enough. I have read all sorts of things, from what I have done, to changing the build fingerprint in the build.prop. Is what I have done enough. I am obviously using the stock rom.

I deleted those from my /system/app directory. The previous OTA did not ever come through my phone, so I think you'll be OK.
On the Kindle Fire, the easiest way to prevent the OTA which is a forced update (you don't get a choice), was to remove the /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip file. Physically moving it elsewhere (like to the sdcard) worked.
I note that the Rezound has the same files.

It has been a really long time since I have used adb for anything, but this should work unless it denies you because system is mounted as read only.

If you are stock unrooted, the best you can do is to say no if it asks. If for some reason it is a forced OTA, I don't think you can without staying in airplane mode.

Thanks, that is what I was wondering, if it asks or if it's forced? I don't remember how my past updates have been and for some reason I feel like they were forced!?!

[Q] Got OTA update and won't install

I've been getting a notice from AT&T on my i717 to download an update and I've been trying to ignore it. I finally decided to contact AT&T and found out that it's supposed to be an update to Android 4.1.2. Here's the text of the chat and then a question to follow:
************* CHAT TRANSCRIPTS ***********************************************
Thank you for your patience! Your AT&T Representative will be with you shortly.
Welcome! You are now chatting with 'Ben Jones'
Ben Jones: Welcome Robin! Can you tell me more about the update you are wanting information for?
RLM: Hi - actually, this is RLM. I keep getting a notification to download a 26mb update over wireless. I'm on Android 4.04 and I'm curious, before I download and apply the update, what the update covers - security fixes, new features, a new version of Android, or something else?
Ben Jones: I will locate this information for you, RLM.
Ben Jones: Click here for the 4.1 update information.
RLM: Ben - I don't have the Note tablet, I have the Note phone, the i717. Is the update still a Jellybean / 4.1 update?
Ben Jones: Correct. That is what the update offers across the bored, unless I am mistaken. I will find the update specifically for your phone, just to be on the safe side.
RLM: Better safe than sorry - thanks for double checking and standing by....
Ben Jones: No worries. It is what I am here for.
Ben Jones: 4.1 update specs.
RLM: Interesting. Link points to 4.2 info - can you please confirm if the update is to 4.1 or 4.2? Sorry to be a nuisance.
Ben Jones: Woops! Sorry about that!
Ben Jones: I am unable to link you the proper link, as it keeps defaulting to the 4.2 update. Here is the the information in text format.
Ben Jones: Android 4.1 (Jellybean)
Ben Jones: Jelly Bean feels fast, fluid, and smooth. Moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning pages in a book.
Ben Jones: » Android Beam
Ben Jones: » Improved battery life from interface enhancements.
Ben Jones: » Improvements to Browser, Calendar, Camera & Gallery
Ben Jones: » Improved performance throughout the system, including faster orientation changes, faster responses when switching between recent apps
Ben Jones: » Project Butter - makes everything run more smoothly.
RLM: Understood. I'll give it a go. Thank you very much for the information.

Now for the question. I downloaded and tried to let the phone install the update, but I end up at a CWM menu (phone is rooted). I search for the update, but can't find it. Should I continue to try to install the update, that is, will I mess up the phone (I realize I will lose root)? If yes, can anyone help me locate the download on the phone? (I guess that's two questions - sorry...).

Highly unlikely that a 26 meg file is an update to JB..and the update is actually around 35 meg...A JB update would be a "much" larger file.
And other users who have taken the update are reporting a baseband upgrade, and the associated apn/ril info. They also report 10 or 11 bloat apps being pushed over.
But no, It's not JB.....and the best outcome is a new radio image to improve LTE performance as ATT rolls out LTE to new areas.
Next, you need to unroot, and have a stock recovery in order for the update to occur.
Check the "super everything thread" in the general section for unroot, and return too stock information...g
Flash stock recovery then install voodoo root keeper backup root and then unroot run the update again now it should do it,when the update finished go to voodoo root keeper and restore root and then your custom recovery of choice.

please find the update.zip and repost if possible. Should be located on the root of either emmc(internal storage) or root of your SD card.
For all of us who still get no updates found on our notes. Thanks
No Update.zip

No update.zip file. I re-ran the download and then postponed the update. Did a full search using es file explorer and no update.zip or even update.* in any folder - did a recursive search from the root.

When the Note 2 recieved the 4.1.2 update it was a .cfg file pushed to cache/fota. The file just had a number like 20102.cfg. Someone posted the file, I was able to change the extension from .cfg to .zip, rename it update.zip, and place it on my SD card and flash it from stock recovery. I was not rooted so It installed the update and factory reset my device. I think when it installs from cache/fota it updates without the reset.

After several downloads, finally found the update file. I don't have enough forum posts to be able to post an actual link yet, so if you send me a PM I'll send a link to the update file. NOTE - this is just the 36mb download from AT&T that others have asked for, not a file that will work if you rooted and reboot into CWM after downloading this file from AT&T. This is just the actual download that scariola asked for.

Got the update to finally work non-destructively. Took about 20 minutes, start-to-finish. Details here:

Patched libWFD_ENGINE.so for rooted MK1 / ML1 (enables screen mirroring)

I was a little annoyed when I rooted my P600 and lost the ability to use screen mirroring. A bit of searching gave me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2421642 showing how to patch libWFD_ENGINE.so. Thanks to everyone on this thread and I have attached a working libWFD_ENGINE.so for my P600 on MK1 / ML1 firmware. Tested using an Actiontec Screenbeam Pro.
Installation:
Using a root-enabled file explorer, like Root Explorer, make a backup of /system/lib/libWFD_ENGINE.so
Download the file below, unzip the zip file, and copy the so file to /system/lib, replacing the one already there (again, make a backup).
Set permissions to 644 / -rw-r--r-- and reboot.
Not tested if it will work on other versions / variants / firmwares
Update, flashed ML1 a couple of days ago and applied the fix again OK.
Excellent work! Did you build this from source? Mind sharing the kernel base?
Worked great thank you.

No, I just patched the code using Winhex after decompiling with IDA as in the thread I have linked to
apparently it doesn't work on the wifi version because now I'm just stuck at the SAMSUNG screen....I did make a copy of the original file but I'm not sure how I can get it back to where it needs to be because I cannot get ADB to recognize my tablet.

I am using this on the P600 wifi, are you using the MK1 firmware ?? Did you setup permissions correctly and did the filesize of the one you backed up look the same ??
TWRP can get you adb, plus the file manager can copy from microsd into your lib directory if needed then setup the correct permissions or use fix permissions from the advanced menu. Be sure to use the 2.6.3.0 version from http://www.techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/lt03wifiue, I used Odin 3.09 to flash the .tar
P600 Wifi Version
MK1 firmware
Just ODIN'd the correct .tar, I used a different TWRP the first time.

My laptop will not recognize my tablet so that I can put that file in a folder so that I can move it with the file manager....hmm.
Still no luck. I even downloaded the zip from the computer and transferred it to a SD card and moved it to the system folder that way and it still will not go past the SAMSUNG screen. I wouldn't care to just flash back to stock with ODIN but I cannot find the firmware without having to pay for the ability to download the file. Does anyone have a download they could share with me? It doesn't really matter which one, I just want my Note back.

You didn't look very hard From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516013 gives http://www.samsungis.com/download/XAR-P600UEUBMK1
When you flash this over the top you won't lose any settings etc., just root / recovery
His dropbox is flagged for traffic and the other links to Sammimobile are for paid downloads. Give me the benefit of the doubt for the ability to use Google search and XDA search lol.

No worries, but you did scroll down through that thread and find the other alternative places to download it ?? !!
I do believe the other options require you to pay for downloading the file. I'm not that desperate yet.

This is from the last link I mentioned http://uploaded.net/file/95sl3ijv
Edit, OK, I have Uploaded Premium so can download big files, now I get it !
Paid the 4.99. Hopefully I will be up and running soon. The download speed isn't blazing fast from that website. I have a dedicated line where I work and I'm only seeing max download speeds of 800Kbs. Lesson learned about not making a backup first. I never would have thought that little file could cause so many problems.
Will this work on lte P605?

It's worth comparing the file sizes 1st to see, I noticed that on the other thread the modification was used across several versions / firmwares of the same device. But make a backup and have a fresh copy of the firmware just incase !
I have P605. I rooted uaing twrp and screen mirror is working perfectly without using this

When you use the screen mirror do you just select it from the settings? Or do you use another app? I am thinking about getting an actiontec screen beam pro and would like to know how the setup goes?
