[Q] Got OTA update and won't install - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've been getting a notice from AT&T on my i717 to download an update and I've been trying to ignore it. I finally decided to contact AT&T and found out that it's supposed to be an update to Android 4.1.2. Here's the text of the chat and then a question to follow:
************* CHAT TRANSCRIPTS ***********************************************
Thank you for your patience! Your AT&T Representative will be with you shortly.
Welcome! You are now chatting with 'Ben Jones'
Ben Jones: Welcome Robin! Can you tell me more about the update you are wanting information for?
RLM: Hi - actually, this is RLM. I keep getting a notification to download a 26mb update over wireless. I'm on Android 4.04 and I'm curious, before I download and apply the update, what the update covers - security fixes, new features, a new version of Android, or something else?
Ben Jones: I will locate this information for you, RLM.
Ben Jones: Click here for the 4.1 update information.
RLM: Ben - I don't have the Note tablet, I have the Note phone, the i717. Is the update still a Jellybean / 4.1 update?
Ben Jones: Correct. That is what the update offers across the bored, unless I am mistaken. I will find the update specifically for your phone, just to be on the safe side.
RLM: Better safe than sorry - thanks for double checking and standing by....
Ben Jones: No worries. It is what I am here for.
Ben Jones: 4.1 update specs.
RLM: Interesting. Link points to 4.2 info - can you please confirm if the update is to 4.1 or 4.2? Sorry to be a nuisance.
Ben Jones: Woops! Sorry about that!
Ben Jones: I am unable to link you the proper link, as it keeps defaulting to the 4.2 update. Here is the the information in text format.
Ben Jones: Android 4.1 (Jellybean)
Ben Jones: Jelly Bean feels fast, fluid, and smooth. Moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning pages in a book.
Ben Jones: » Android Beam
Ben Jones: » Improved battery life from interface enhancements.
Ben Jones: » Improvements to Browser, Calendar, Camera & Gallery
Ben Jones: » Improved performance throughout the system, including faster orientation changes, faster responses when switching between recent apps
Ben Jones: » Project Butter - makes everything run more smoothly.
RLM: Understood. I'll give it a go. Thank you very much for the information.

Now for the question. I downloaded and tried to let the phone install the update, but I end up at a CWM menu (phone is rooted). I search for the update, but can't find it. Should I continue to try to install the update, that is, will I mess up the phone (I realize I will lose root)? If yes, can anyone help me locate the download on the phone? (I guess that's two questions - sorry...).

Highly unlikely that a 26 meg file is an update to JB..and the update is actually around 35 meg...A JB update would be a "much" larger file.
And other users who have taken the update are reporting a baseband upgrade, and the associated apn/ril info. They also report 10 or 11 bloat apps being pushed over.
But no, It's not JB.....and the best outcome is a new radio image to improve LTE performance as ATT rolls out LTE to new areas.
Next, you need to unroot, and have a stock recovery in order for the update to occur.
Check the "super everything thread" in the general section for unroot, and return too stock information...g

Flash stock recovery then install voodoo root keeper backup root and then unroot run the update again now it should do it,when the update finished go to voodoo root keeper and restore root and then your custom recovery of choice.

please find the update.zip and repost if possible. Should be located on the root of either emmc(internal storage) or root of your SD card.
For all of us who still get no updates found on our notes. Thanks

No Update.zip

No update.zip file. I re-ran the download and then postponed the update. Did a full search using es file explorer and no update.zip or even update.* in any folder - did a recursive search from the root.

When the Note 2 recieved the 4.1.2 update it was a .cfg file pushed to cache/fota. The file just had a number like 20102.cfg. Someone posted the file, I was able to change the extension from .cfg to .zip, rename it update.zip, and place it on my SD card and flash it from stock recovery. I was not rooted so It installed the update and factory reset my device. I think when it installs from cache/fota it updates without the reset.

Finally found it

After several downloads, finally found the update file. I don't have enough forum posts to be able to post an actual link yet, so if you send me a PM I'll send a link to the update file. NOTE - this is just the 36mb download from AT&T that others have asked for, not a file that will work if you rooted and reboot into CWM after downloading this file from AT&T. This is just the actual download that scariola asked for.

Got the update to finally work non-destructively. Took about 20 minutes, start-to-finish. Details here:

Unofficial Asus Thread - How To Update To ICS Manually

If you want to update to ICS manually, you must follow these steps:
1. Download the file from Asus (Select OS:Android > Firmware)
2. Take out the zip that's located in the zip u downloaded (DON'T unzip the second zip which has a file and folder, it should STAY in zip format)
3. Put that zip into the root of your TP - you DO NOT have to have an SD card to do this, placing it in the top-level or root folder of your Prime's storage (ssd) is JUST FINE.
4. Disconnect your Prime if it's connected to a computer. Your Prime should have a little triangle in the notification bar - HIT THAT.
*5. (If No Triangle) Restart your Prime (make sure it's disconnected from the computer) and when it starts up it should have the triangle in the notification bar.
hi
Worked. I downloaded did it manually
I have ICS already but missing some system apks that will bork any future update from what I hear. Can I install this on top of the one I have now so that I can recover missing system apks?

I was able to do that with HC. I was missing g+ and was able to re-install the manual update and it replaced the system app.....though you will need to unroot using voodoo rootkeeper before doing it.
Thanks for the heads up! This solved my missing system apks! Worked like a charm

Anytime! In the future you can use root explorer to copy the system apk from its folder and back it up onto your SD card......this way when you see an OTA coming you can just replace it back....... just in case they don't post the current build....
Did ics solve unknown serial for anyone?
Too bad there is no German version yet
Just to clear things up: All this stuff is (semi)official, right?
Which means by installing ICS manually I wouldn´t loose warranty, right?
What would happen, if I install an US SKU on my german tablet with DE SKU?
nothing, it doesn't work.
Really?!
Bummer.
I wonder if anyone can help? I didn't delete anything, my Prime just
fails the update. I am rooted. My device says I have an update, the
update starts but, after a few seconds, the Droid guy falls over with
the red warning triangle. In my Settings it says, the update failed, you
be brought back to your original configuration.
Also, I'm not having any luck with the download link. I tried on my pc
with IE, Chrome and FF. When I click the link for the download I get an
error msg.
hey guys,
thanks for this post.
can anyone please telle me what version of the prime I should have to download which version of this link? http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Eee+Pad+Transformer+Prime+TF201&p=20&s=16
I read something that German primes are not possible to be upgraded to ICS.
but how do I know if my prime is a German one?
thanks, greetz

Goto Settings->About Tablet. Scroll down to Build Number. If contains ".DE_epad-", you're screwed for the time being.
Otherwhise use the corresponding download from Asus (WW, US, TW).

Not possible. See http://www.android-hilfe.de/asus-ee...am-sandwich-update-ist-da-25.html#post2571025
so there is so far no way to update a german tf201?
is there an announcement that it will be possible some day?

OTAs & Blocking...

So, just thought I would post about OTA's being pushed by Sprint to possibly patch our beloved root / loki access.. I would assume big red also will be following suit for us soon, so lets discuss how we can stop it before its to late. I am no dev, just a simple user trying to share what little bit of info I have come across to block, which I hope is accurate...
(Im in now way responsible for anything you do to your device)
Sprint topic is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2288547
Small read about their OTA, neither confirm nor deny's anything really...
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...iving-its-first-ota-update-build-l720vpuamdl/
VZW semi thread about blocking, which was quickly buried:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292618
Info about AT&T patch and blocking (which I hunted and applied to a similiar file on my VZW phone)
http://www.scottsroms.com/showthread.php?3146-AT-amp-T-Galaxy-S4-BLOCK-THE-OTA!
Me personally, I have done the following specficly to block OTAs, which Im not sure is totally right, or complete, however, I have had 0 ill-effects/OTAs come through:
Frozen via Titanium Backup: FWUpgrade.apk
Renamed file: /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak
Renamed file: /system/app/ wssyncmlnps.apk to wssyncmlnps.apk.bak
All credits are due to the authors / contributors in the links above, Im just compiling info to share with the community.
If anybody more versed on how to be 100% sure to block the OTA's, please share
Have a great holiday!
Thanks. I suppose we may not know exactly if this is correct unless Verizon issues an OTA patch that we can "test" this method with.
We certainly shouldn't give up what may be our only windows to flashing ROMs/kernels, etc.
The simplest thing is just to flash a custom recovery.

this. it will download but cant install because the stock recovery isnt there
Wasnt the sdm 1.0 file one of the ones that blocks it too? Fwupgrade has the same icon as one of those all share s/w updates if i remember correctly

[Q] infinite home screen scrolling, ongoing wifi notification, bookmark sync

I am 24 hours into using my S4 and have a few questions I am on VRUAME7, rooted, and do not have a custom recovery installed.
1. I want to enable infinite home screen scrolling. I did some digging and found that if you edit system/csc/feature.xml as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033894
I tried this with both ES file explorer and 902 Text Editor and both will not let me edit and save the file since it is read only. On 902 it says EROFS read only system file Any thoughts? Anyway to make the file editable?
2. If I do not have a custom recovery is there any way to disable the ongoing wifi notification.
3. Anyway to sync bookmarks on the stock browser with chrome on a desktop? I have mobile chrome on the s4 but wanted to play with the stock broswer.
Thanks.

Using ES File Explorer, go in to tools/root explorer. Click "Mount R/W" click on the "RW" radio button next to /system. and hit "OK". Now you can edit your file. Don't forget to remount that /system as Read Only when you're done.
Thanks a lot. that worked. Do the other changes in the Galaxy note thread work on the s4 as well?
How did/are you rooted with that current ota? I just picked up a s4 today, vzw, and it seems we have lost root. Sorry if its off topic, just that I am interested to at least get root. Thanks

If you already installed the OTA you're too late.
If not.... (I found a lot of this out right here on the forum):
1. Download the OTA but after the d/l delay the install for several hours
2. Root using the method on xda with ODIN and motochopper
3. Immediately download Voodoo OTA rootkeeper and back up root
4. Let the OTA update install
5. ***Do a factory reset (This allows you get the wifi toggle. Don't do what I did... i.e. set up your phone and then do a factory reset and then have to re-setup your phone)
6. After the factory reset when you reconnect to the play store supersu and ota will download automatically and you'll still have root (I did this).
Hope that helps.
Oh well.....looks like I am too late! Typical vzw.....I appreciate the heads up. Glad that you got it before..... I'm off to the "bounty link". I forgot how much bloat sucks, and to be stuck with it for now!

Found the file in ota .zip update Verzion DNA- looking for VZW_Serve.apk

Hello everyone;
I'm sorry if this has been asked or listed in some other post. I have attempted to search the forums and the all mighty google and have had no luck.
Due to unexpected turn of events. I have lost most of my apk files in /system/app/. I have recovered all the apk files from my back up except vzw_serve.apk. I have been unable to locate this apk any where on the net. I have been trying to to update threw the OTA update from Verizon with no such luck. Keeps saying assert failed- of vzw_serve.apk. The file isn't there so there is nothing to verify.
If anyone could direct me to the location of this file, or be nice enough to lend me a hand, I would be grateful. Thank you.
VZW_Serve.apk
Here it is. I assume you were referring to the 3.06 OTA.

LG G3(sprint version) Missing .com file

Well I just got my phone rooted and unlocked for sprint. Paid a guy 50 to do it and I noticed that my google play store won't work correctly. He deleted a file that also stopped the unmovable notification to do the OTA system update so I wouldn't press it. How can I re add the file/service
My phone is LS990
Software version is the ZV4
Build number is the KVT49L.LS990ZV4
Android Version 4.4.2
my girlfriend also just had her phone rooted and unlocked any was that I could pull the file from her G3 and put it on mine?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum.
For reply or more questions please register an account on XDA forums.
Stand by
Good luck
If you know the file name, you should be able to use a root file explorer to find the file on her phone, copy it to an SD card (or mail it to your phone), and then copy it to the same location on your phone. Be sure permissions on the file after you copy it are set the same as on her phone, then reboot.
