[Q] kernal - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

can anyone tell me how to install kernal please ? sorry for the stupid question, can this be done with odin

Download the kernal of your choice, extract it and then open up odin. Then put your sg2 into download mode (turn phone off then hold power button, home button and volume down key) connect the phone to pc it will then show up in odin. Then where it says PDA select the kernal you downloaded and press start and wait for 30 secs and you are done

xwfk1 ??? Seriously or is it XWKF1 ?
Yes ,you would have to choose the nearest to your stock kernel, been said, nearest to KF1 is CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KF2-v4.0-CWM4.zip on chainfire's thread ( Link : http://download.chainfire.eu/22/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KF2-v4.0-CWM4.zip)
Custom ROMs will come with their own kernel ,so need to worry about them
Happy Rooting
Hoe this helps!

Sure, I have my device modded to do that..
What Rom version you have?
Ke7, KE8, KF1?
I think a search button is required for XDA plus a manual on using it .

how about one for KF2?
Ill make ya mods for KF2 and KE7.. Post back in a few mins
These mods will require that your rom be Deodexed.. If it isn't it wont help you..
Meaning, if you are running stock rom you cant use them.. Are you using stock?
i'm on litening 1.5
Easy then, just see the link in my sig regarding modded dialer..
from cwm recovery, install zip?
that's what I did, and now I get a crash at startup saying messaging failed.. and there's no network
I'll reflash the rom, but how should I install it after?

[Q] A little help for a noob

Hello everobody,
First of all I'd like to say I couldn't find my answer in the forums , so that's why I´m starting a new thread.

It would be great if you could give me pointers on how to start. Some tutorials to root and install a new firm on my phone, also please instruct me on wich is the better custom firmware to use.
Thanks in advence.

This question maybe is very stupid, but i just want to get it clear....
This
"27-09-2011 XXKI3 Batista70 FoxHound Edition 2.0
-Based on the latest official firmware 2.3.5 WIPE
-Deodexed
-Zipalinged
- Abyss Kernel 1.6 By Angelom
• Adding CW Recovery 4.0.1.5
• ETC.........."
Means
That if I flash my phone with this Rom it will automatically change my kernel to the one described (abyss 1.6)?? and so, it will also change my CWM to the 4.0.1.5 version??"
Thx in advance

Not necessarily its just the kernel the chef recommends, but it may not work for you. I personally like speedmod. The battery life is superb with the rom your using.

[Q] Does rooting require exact same kernal? Galaxy s2

I am new to the android .and bought my first galaxy s2. I will follow the s2 one click root to root my phone. I need to know if I need the same kernal as my device? My original kernal is JPKG5. do I need jpkg5 insecure kernal and then a jpkg5 secure kernal to root my phone? Or can I change my kernal to some other kernal of my choice?
my galaxy s2 gets pretty hot if I play intense games like asphalt or star legends, it even gets hot if I use mobile internet like EDGE (i guess its 2g internet nott sure) and browse the internet. The battery life sucks. I keep wifi, gps off and it last like 7 hours if I use mobile internet. Heard a different kernal might help.
One last question, what is the purpose of titanium backup? Do I get to restore my phones original self back again easily? Like will it unroot itself and return to the original gingerbread rom if I decide to change to cynogenmod? If titanium backup does not do that, then how can I unroot my phone and then get back to my original gingerbread rom?
Thanks alot for your help...

Welcome to Android I am not sure about the kernel. The purpose of TB is that you can backup all your apps and data and if you flash a new custom rom you can use TB to restore all the apps and data. Its a very powerful application. You can always flash the original stock rom downloaded from Intratechs thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278. Then you will have an unrooted phone. Beware of the custom counter!!

If you are international S2 (i9100) user use CF-Root instead SOC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Dont use CF-Root or SOC if you are AT&T user, there is specific threads on how to root AT&T devices.
CF-Root is 1 step only, this means for a non experienced user like you (as it's your first android device) less chance to screw up something.
Follow carefully the instructions.
Be sure Kies installed but NOT running (kill kies process) because kies block odin = semi bricked phone.
Takes about 30 seconds
If you need more info feel free to ask here or pm me

im a bit confused, all those stock kernals in that link u gave are kernels and rom? Like if I have cynogenmod rom installed in my fone and then flash my phone again using one of those stock kernels/roms, I would be flashing back from cynogenmod to gingerbread 2.3.3 (JPKG5)?
Also what is the custom counter?

Cf-root seems like it will limit me to only one kernel, is it a fact? Is it possible for a gs2 user to use any kernel he desires? because I would like to use a better kernel than jpkg5 but stick to the original gingerbread rom 2.3.3. Then mod it to stop loading the so called bloat somehow using an app. Plus I found cf-root to be a little confusing, can u help me understand this? Cf-root will use the kernel inside the phone and leave it intact plus give me root? Or will cf-root change my kernel permanently?
Thanks for all the trouble everyone, if its ok ill ask more questions if I get stuck, but will try my best to figure it out myself first...thanks again...

If you flash one of those ROMs you will flash from cyanogen to your original. The custom counter counts how many times you flash a custom rom / kernel - it can be a problem if you have to send your phone in for repair. Read more about it.

cf-root is an original kernel with root+cwm inserted. No it dosnt lock you to a single kernel, its just the most easy way to root your phone while keeping your stock rom. When you are rooted you then can flash any kernel or custom rom you want.
You only need to pickup the same (ex: kh3, ki4, kf1 etc..) for the root process, this to have full compatibility during root with the stock rom on your phone, but after successfull root you can flash any kernel/rom for the s2

Need help rooting a weird kernel

I am trying to root a SGS2, i am not sure what kernel to use, my current kernel version is XWLPD-CL524746 [email protected] 154 #3
What I want is clockworkrecovery in order to install a MIUI rom.
this guide states the following:
To work out which version you need go into Settings --> About Phone in your Galaxy S II, and scroll down to where it says "Kernel version". You will see a string something like this: 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI3-CL571576. The yellow bit after the XX is what you're looking for.

What firmware was you using when this happened. You've sounds like it's recoverable. If download mode is all you can get your probably get best results by downloading official firmware from Sam firmware and extracting it then flashing the zip file in odin via PDA section. All the best.

Flash a stock Rom via Odin. Wait till your phone boots up. Go back to Odin install a custom kernel (i recommend siyah kernel). Backup your stock Rom, then install a custom Rom. There is a lot of tutorials to tell you exactly how to do this process. If you need help at any point of this process just send me a message and I will give you a detailed walkthrough. You should be fine though!!

How about from the intratech's thread? And is the Odin flash failing risk big with the situation I have right now?
I've used odin A LOT and never had a problem. I only ever use the PDA section and never touch anything else because I don't understand it. I can't comment on intratechs thread as I've never used his software. Any custom ROMs are normally flashed via CWM.
