Yes, I know there's another thread with the same title, more than likely right below this one. I have different questions though and wanted to make sure my thread was seen. Sorry if that upsets you. Anyway...
I've been debating back and forth to get a tablet lately for a variety of reasons. I want something that can be used for school, something my son can enjoy, something for trips, etc, etc. I am no stranger to the Android OS in general, as I have an HTC Inspire 4G running RCMix3D KINGDOM v2.0. So my question isn't so much about the device, but more about my options once I purchase it.
At $250.00 through Amazon.com I would be stupid not to get this tablet over the Archos 101 in my opinion. It's twice the specs at only 20 or 30 more dollars. Anyway, on to my question... Once I get the tablet in hand, what ROM should I use that will be stable and fast, but also give me the most bang for my buck? Side question here is if it's also possible to get HTC Sense working on this device at all?
As well as that, what's this I hear about this device dual booting with Windows 7? I read that it could, then that it couldn't, then that it was another Viewsonic device that could and got confused with the G tab. What's the real deal here? Google has not been my friend on this particular question.
the Gtablet will not run windows. There is another Viewsonic device that does have dual boot, but it's most definitely not this one.
As far as the other questions, I'll let somebody else address them, as I'm pretty much committed to never recommending any viewsonic device to anybody that I may have respect for. I'm in full on boycott mode, here.

Care to go into that statement at all? I'd like to hear what happened, specifically if it pertains to the device in question that I'm about to buy.

Read the thread in the general section entitled "disappointed at Viewsonic." I'll sum it up for you:
gtablet released, people bought it, software sucked, Viewsonic releases a series of updates to improve their horrible firmware. It doesn't matter, becuase people started using exclusively 3rd party roms to make it a useful tablet, not a hunk of junk.
Viewsonic released it's last update in January. It was update 1.1.3588. i bought my Gtablet in March. No joke, the day after I received it in the mail, there was a campaign unleashed to attempt to get Viewsonic ot update their firmware yet again, since it was used for the source for some roms...things needed fixed still, etc.
In April, because of hte pressure, they released an update 1.2.4349. It changed the bootloader of the Gtablet, which is why there are roms made for 2 different bootloaders. Unfortunately, this 4349 update did very little to fix existing issues and caused some others. For instance, Gtablet stock firmware users lost HD video playback, and the ability to change wallpapers.
And then....silence for (let's see, it's July, that was April) 3 months so far. I know that 3 months doesn't sound like much, but the device has only been available for 8 months.
The bigger issue is that the 4349 update was pulled 24 hours after it's release. So, anyone that updated to it had no way of reverting back to 3588, where things worked a bit. they've also been selling them in Woot Tiger Direct and Amazon deals with the broken 4349 firmware preinstalled.
In addition, they outsourced their customer support to a company called US Merchants, a repackager (their name is also on the back of the tablets, too) who really know nothing about technology, or customer support. They even, at one point, pointed tech support questioners to THIS forum to get support.
Now, Notion Ink Adam and Advent vega have identical hardware to the Gtablet. Vega's OS was superior and then ported to the gtablet (VegaNTab). Notion Ink is actually attempting to get Honeycomb to run on their devices, with the help of the 3rd party developer community. What has Viewsonic done for their customer base....that's right, NOTHING.
The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me was when I had an online chat with Viewsonic technical support. I asked a simple question of "Peggy," "Is Viewsonic intending on updating their firmware, or attempting to request drivers from NVidea so that 3rd party developers can work on accelerated gingerbread and honeycomb roms?"
The answer I received was to call (US Mechants) for technical support, that they handle the Gtablet, now. I asked if anyone at Viewsonic had anything to do with the Gtablet, and they responded that they "Have no informaiton regarding the Gtablet in their resources." To me, that read, Viewsonic no longer develops or supports the Gtablet in any way.
SO...buy it if you will, 3rd party development is wonderful for this thing. even the Froyo Roms are exceptional to work with. I'm running Calkulin/Clemsyn combo, and it's great. The tablet hardware is excellent, the 3rd party development is top rate, but if you ever expect the manufacturer ever give a ****, then I suggest you get an Acer Iconia, Motorola Xoom, or Asus Transformer. I know that Motorola has already updated their OS from 3.0 to 3.1, then 3.2. We've been on 2.2, then, slightly better 2.2, then oh wait, let's break 2.2, then your stuck on broken 2.2.

First off, shortened the quote because I don't feel people wanna read 8000 lines of the same text. But anyway, I loved your "review" of the product and the background. Basically what I got from it was that it's a great device, with plenty of options that go with it if you are willing, and that manufacturer support absolutely sucks on this device. Kind of sucks too becuase I do like it, but it also makes me not want to give my $250.00 to a company that couldn't give two ****s about the product they sell.

I like your nutshell...
Alternatives aren't as bad as you might think. My stepfather bought an iconia a week ago from staples for $299...of course, he used a $100 off coupon they had. Be patient and another deal will be around shortly.
It's already a really good device after you root and sideload apps. I just don't see the point in the reasoning of "WE CANT HAVE CUSTOM ROMS" I mean we're working on it but for the time being, you can make the tablet pretty freakin' great. I worked on mine and now it looks like it's running honeycomb aside from missing a few important settings that B&N so kindly ripped away from the tablet, we have everything working pretty well and to our liking. We will get custom roms but it might not be ICS but who cares? Anything is better than how our tabs came out of the box. I enjoy it and I despise the original firmware and I can honestly say, I now love this device.
If you keep the Nook Tablet, you're telling B&N you're OK with a locked bootloader.
As a consumer, voting with your wallet is the best way to make corporations listen.
While I do agree you should take a stand against a company, threatening to return something isn't the way to go about it. I think there is more formal methods but I'm not saying you're wrong, just wanting true proper justification for the act.

I think you missed the Nook Color and how much fun it was. BN lied outright to me before I bought this device. Most people bought the nook color because they could make it "their own". That will never be possible with a locked bootloader. The NT has great specs, but so does the Droid Bionic and there is 2 developers on it in over 3 months. The kernel sucks so the roms can't improve things much.
I'm just disappointed. I was looking for a dual core, 7-inch tablet that didn't suck. When this came out I thought that it's perfect. I'll just load ICS onto it and it'll be a steal for $259! I guess B&N really ****ed me over this time.
Quite simply: I wouldn't return mine, but then again, I'm not a rebel non-conformist like some people are. I research a device and make sure it fits my needs and is to my liking before I buy it. I'm pretty happy with my little NT.
I don't know where you're getting you "rebel non-conformist" accusation from. Some of us just like the idea of buying cheap hardware and putting a tablet-centric operating system on it. What's wrong with that?
Granted, I should have looked it up sooner and figured out that the bootloader was locked. But that's my fault.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that, sounds great. But there's a saying, I believe it goes: 'You get what you pay for.' ;p I was mostly referring to the bro trying to throw around money to convince people to crack the bootloader or whatever that entails.
The only thing missing that would be supplied by a custom ROM like CM7 is copy/paste, but I suppose I can live without it for now.
I was considering returning the tablet but I've decided to keep it. For my money, it's the best device of it's kind out there and at this point I've tried quite a few. The only reason I was considering returning it is because of the fear that B&N might push out an update that will block the ability to sideload apps. I haven't been successful in my attempts to root the NT yet (still working on it) but now I'm determined to root it, if only to try and block automatic updates. If it wasn't for those updates, I'd happily remain unrooted forever. The ability to sideload apps is more than enough for me and that ability turns a really good tablet into a truly fantastic one.
If B&N closes the loophole, I will still be able to use the NT to read books and comics and watch movies and that will be great. But right now I can do so much more and it would be a shame to lose that ability. And so I continue my attempts to root and then block OTA updates. So far no success, but I'm gonna keep at it. I will do whatever I can do to help the NT remain as fantastic as it has been so far.
I wouldn't return mine. I knew going in the bootloader was locked. Sure, I'd love it if it wasn't, but I'm satisfied with sideloading and rooting. My NT is now pretty much perfect for my needs, and I consider it a steal for the price.
Personally, I'd rather see someone unlock the 11GB or so available internal memory reserved for B&N content. (Or maybe someone's already done that and I missed it, I dunno.) To me it's kind of equivalent to stores locking up RAM in an anti-theft cage - only I've purchased and taken my RAM home, but it's still locked in an anti-theft cage. I can only have it temp-unlocked each time I take it back to the same store and buy data from them.
Rotten idea, and it's the one I do hope B&N takes flak for- they push the Nook's OOB memory advantage hoping few realize their 16GB tablet is really a 1GB tablet for most uses. That's just a minor difference. Yeah, I know it has an SD slot, but I still want my internal 11GB's back as well.

What if we are OK with it? Seems to me that most here are satisfied with it as is. I mean, yes I want CM7 or 9 but to be honest, if it never came I certainly wouldn't regret my purchase.
I've owned a lot of tablets and this by far has been the best experience. I even quit buying Kindle books and started buying nook books to support B and N further.
My main reason for supporting them however is that I don't want the last book store I can visit to go under. If that means no CM then so be it.

I had read about the locked bootloader before buying. I did wait until it was rooted and google market was available. I was watching the rooting thread as it was happening and bought it the next morning.
Pretty happy with my current NT setup right now, with all the apps I had when I had the NC. Only difference is that everything runs so much faster and smoother.
The thing I'm not happy with is the 1GB limit. To have almost 12 GB's sitting there that I have so little access to is beyond ridiculous.

Keeping or not keeping the Nook Tablet is a personal choice for each person. There are arguments on each side and having people fighting over them in a thread is just asking for the flaming and stuff to start here to like it is on the rezound forums lol.
I respect a person's choice to keep their tablet, and they should respect my decision to return it if the bootloader isn't unlocked.
As of right now I feel mine was well worth the $250. It does almost everything you could want a Android device to do. The battery life is fantastic too. Also I fell the size is perfect too.
To all the people who want to *****, go over to the Barnes and noble forums and ***** if your going to, you have a much better chance of being heard. All your going to do here is piss off Devs and the other users.

Considering this isn't the dev section (notice the "Nook Tablet General") section at the top this is EXACTLY the correct spot to complain. If you don't want to see upset people who were lied to complain then don't read the thread that is obviously (from the name "Why would you return the nook tablet") going to contain EXACTLY what you want to avoid.

Of course you're satisfied. You have a new toy, and right now you're either enjoying features you haven't had before, or are enjoying features you /have/ had before, but on a faster device or new screen size.
Being satisfied now does not equal being satisfied later though. Eventually you will wish you could upgrade your OS without having to buy new hardware, but that may not be possible.
More importantly though, sending the message to OEMs that we accept the restrictions they impose buy buying locked down devices only motivates them to do it again with future devices.
I'm voting with my wallet.
Thing is, if the bootloader was unlocked, I'd buy instantly, and most likely use the device stock for quite a while before installing any ROMs. That would at least allow a chance for me to try out the B&N book store service. By not buying, no chance. Hopefully they consider this and provide a solution.

I thought it was discovered that rooting the device gave you access to this?
I already sent the letter to ASUS support. I hope to hear something back.
Dear Asus,
I have owned many consumer electronic devices and I must say, the TF201 is hands down the WORST piece of gadget I have ever owned. Nothing about it works and the worst part is, you are reluctant to help us to make it work.
For 10 months, we, the users, have been beta testing the TF201 so that you can develop better, improved products like the 700. We paid over 500 dollars to test products for you and receive no support. We have been through numerous ANR on simple tasks such as web browsing or playing a 2D game. Seriously? Is this what we paid 500 dollars for? Not only that, every subsequent firmware update did nothing to improve the product. Yet asus hasn't done much to help the situation. You provide the users with a half baked bootloader unlock tool that doesn't work for 50% of the users (check XDA). When asked to fix the bootloader unlock tool, ASUS says they dont support unlocking the device and can't do anything about it. Asus requested users to RMA their device to fix the bootloaded issue yet when the users get it back, there had been no change. No issues were addressed. Now we are stuck with a garbage firmware from ASUS that can’t even do the simplest things right and users can't even put a custom ROM to help make our experience better.
Two days ago, you released an OTA for jellybean which failed to update for about half the existing owners. Now when we check for the update, the tablet can't find it anymore and we are stuck with the same crappy 4.0.3 firmware. The devs are going above and beyond to modify the update file so it can work for everyone (check XDA) since asus is too lazy to upload the firmware on their support/download page. I got a question for you ASUS, can you do ANYTHING right? How much do you have to suck to screw up an OTA? I have used many android products from many vendors and NONE of them had nearly as many issues as the TF201. In the dev community it is called the bastard child. Many owners simply sold it at a loss or were successful at trading it at bestbuy for something else since Asus would not support them. You have the courage to charge customer $500+ for such a garbage device yet you provide this level of support? I understand problems happen and users are willing to cope with issues. But the least you could do is support your product by providing us with a functioning bootloader unlocker so the users that are having problems with the garbage firmware can at least use a custom firmware to make it useable again. We paid for this device and we expect some level of functionality such as browsing the web for the money we paid. At the very least, you can upload the new firmware on the support page so users who are having issues downloading the firmware (because some engineers can’t even make a functioning OTA) can at least manually upgrade to 4.1.
Overall, I must say, this tablet has done nothing more than frustrating me. Every time I go to use it, something goes wrong. I hope someone reads this email and feels guilty for charging upwards of $500 to deliver such subpar device to its consumers. At the very least, check out the XDA forum for TF201 and see how much time is being spent by users to simply get a straightforward OTA. Finally, if asus can’t deliver remotely what they promised, they should leave the tablet game for companies that know how to build a decent firmware or OTA.
Sincerely,
A disappointed customer
Given their track record, they will probably ignore it. I dont expect to hear anything back.
I have the same feelings as you, but post this on their facebook page or something if you want it to make some kind of impact. Here on XDA there are what, like 2 Asus marketing employees who occasionally come by?
Your opinion
I respect your right to have an opinion. I actually only come to this developers website to read productive opinions. Your opinion has no purpose here other than to fan the flames of your ire. It's useless for productive people and the moderators should delete your thread.

I already posted on their FB page. But they deleted it. So I emailed them directly. I am looking for Jony shi's email address so I can email him personally. I am pretty sure he has no clue how bad the team F'ed it up
I thought most people who had issues with the OTA had rooted their tablet and messed with it somehow. To me it seems like asus has made sure the update works for everyone who hasn't done anything to their prime and that it doesn't brick anyones tablet, and it seems many people are able to get their tablet back into a state such that they can install the update. I really don't think we could expect them to do much more.
Also I don't get why the download problems where so terrible, it's still only been two days since the first release and I think most people are able to get the update pretty quickly now.
And also note that not only did they get us jellybean quicker than most other devices, but they also fixed one of the biggest issues with the prime (ANR). The only thing I really am disappointed over is the lack of status updates leading up to the release.

This kind of attitude of being quiet and trying to figure things out by ourselves is why ASUS can get away with it. No one brings it up. TF201 is probably the worst tablet out their for android in its price range and it has been 10 months and there have been no improvements. I am not whining, I am just stating something that is unfair. No matter how much the devs try, they can't unlock the prime unless ASUS does something. And most of us dont have hours to fiddle with something like OTA that should just work. So we SHOULD bring up the issue. I think more people should contact ASUS directly until something is done because clearly we can't solve the problem.
We deserve something better than a paperweight for $500.

Although I agree with the sentiment (I too have a prime) i'm seriously fed up of coming on this forum and seeing people complain.
there are enough complaint threads already.
I am fortunate enough to have been able to unlock my device, but that in itself contains massive risks (I almost bricked mine a couple of weeks ago)
when trying to look for a solution to my partial brick, all I could find were complaint threads. even semi useful threads were full of complaints. this made the task very frustrating.
By all means complain to Asus... but PLEASE enough with these threads and all of the thread jacking that is going on.. I want rid of my prime not because of performance, but because I can't read any thread in any section of the Prime forum without having to hear the same people complaining again and again.
I'm sorry if this seems confrontational, but I have seriously had enough of it!!
P.S. OP, please change the subject of this post to something more relevant like "My complaint letter to Asus ( Yet another complaint thread)"

My point is that this post here is not that thing you claim to want. Nobody here works for asus and nobody here is looking for the opinion of the unhappy user. Its been done to death and is not an original thought.
People dont come to this site (or shouldnt) hoping the manufacturer is here to fix the problems they have.
I honestly don't know what you're trying to achieve here. First of all, this is what, the 14th thousand complaint thread OF THE DAY? We get it, you hate your device. Now be a big boy and sell the damn thing if you're so fed up with it. Second of all, if you want Asus to take your letter seriously, or read it without groaning like I did, don't use phrases like "how much do you have to suck" or "crappy, garbage firmware". If you expect Asus to respond professionally, I'd start by not sounding like a 12 year old boy that had his toy broken.
Jellybean's been out 2 days. TWO WHOPPING DAYS. If you can't access the update now I'd suggest you wait a week or two, because evidently you're not the only Prime user in the world. There are plenty of people who are also attempting to update their device, and mind I point out that many have gotten the new firmware and are quite happy with the result. There's no need to throw a fit simply because you weren't among the firsts in line.
Finally, don't complain about not being able to put custom ROMs on your device. That's not Asus' problem. We all know that unlocking the bootloader and flashing custom ROMs void the warranty. No one forced you to do it, and if you did it and borked your device, Asus has no obligation to fix it for you. I fully understand the risks of tampering with the firmware, and if tomorrow I flashed something new and bricked my Prime, I wouldn't go running to Asus and demand an answer.
I have my fair share of problems with the Prime, trust me. But this forum has brought whining to a whole new level.
sorry fellas i have to agree with op. and im not hatin on asus. i have a nexus seven and two high end asus laptops (though the keyboards are absolute ****) which i love. the prime is the biggest piece of **** ever sold to the american public. i mean really? you bottleneck the device by having horribly slow storage? and a device that is only wifi with **** wifi?
i took mine back to best buy today and recieved a 538 dollar credit. so it was made right by best buy. praise baby jesus that POS is gone and i didnt take a loss.
I wish i could get my money back for this POS from gamestop or asus. I shouldnt have to sell it for a loss because of asuses broken promises and lack of competence.

I don't get it. While I do understand that Prime XDA forum is nothing but complaints (I wonder why...), you also have an option to not read any of them. But you continue to reply to majority of them... mock the individual... and say "blah blah blah"... just as useless as many other complaint threads as you put it.
And really?? Gary Key doesn't work for Asus? Asus_Tien doesn't work for Asus??

I actually do agree with whycali... we have too many thread complaining about the device... what is the point? does the number of threads make a difference to Asus?... if you have problems with the device, that's really bad luck, but use an existing thread instead of creating a new one... I rarely read these thread of complaints, but it's becoming really hard to find useful threads...

I agree... I almost didn't buy my prime because of all the negative things that have been said here. Thankfully I decided to make up my own mind and im glad i did. Best thing i have bought myself in awhile.
Thankfully im reporting non of the issue's that everyone else has been. maybe im Lucky or people are just blowing things out of proportion. Ive been using ASUS products for years and Ive never had problems with any of their products.... can't believe that their build quality has went down that much since the last computer i built which is still running fine today.

Yes, I love this device... I've had no problems with anything so far... and it's the best device I've purchased...
I don't think their build quality has really gone down... cuz like you I've been using Asus products for a while...maybe it's just one of those devices.... something that every company faces...

Well as long as mine works perfectly it doesn't matter what anybody says.... just sad that i come on here to discuss what people are doing with their tabs and what cool things are being done and all i see is negativity.
out of every forum here on xda ive looked at this one for the prime seems to be the worst.
I get that the prime is not perfect and has its flaws, but what i really don't get is why people are upset about OTA problem^^
OTA's are supposed to work for stock devices, if you do stuff like rooting and modding you should be aware that OTAs might not work anymore. Yes even rooting and installing busybox will modify your system and may cause OTA problems.
I personally have no problems with my prime. Happy user since last January. And now it has jellay bean! <3 loving it so far

there are enough complaint threads already.

I'm personally fed up with people being fed up at seeing so many complaint threads. Be mad at Asus for selling us a crappy product and not supporting it. This product deserves to have an XDA thread chock full of complaint threads to remind people who see them what a garbage company Asus is.
I am an atrix user and i looked at all the atrix, photon and electr. forums and i suggezt we should create a topic to fight togeather against the Motofail. Also everibody should chech the other forums on the moto page to let em know they are suck!
Edit 1: somebody has been put up a moto conversation on the forum, and they said they won't update becouse of the hardware..thats ridiculous!
But on the other hand some of us thinks that the google cancelled the update thanks to debian linux.. (aka webtop)
Edit 2: you should check out the general atrix forums for ideas and support. We could win togeather!
Thank you!
(Sorry for bad eng)

I agree, we have to work together on this. But what can we do?
You'll get a better response if you make a proper thread title...
We could find the review section of every new moto phone on all the different carriers and bombard it terrible awful (two star not one) reviews... Just a myriad of reception battery stability hardware problems that make people stay with samsung or HTC.
"I really liked this phone but... godawful experience 123" "It has such a great battery life but..."

Sh!t on the coats. I'm sorry, I'm just...this needs to settle in. I'm with you guys till the bitter end though.
It though kinda makes sense though, do you think they will skip ICS and get JB - The list was only for ICS Kinda made sense since why upgrade us directly to ICS > JB
This is not the ICS rollout page, this is the Motorola upgrade page, the MOTOROLA XOOM will see a Jellybean Upgrade on that page. "Will remain at GB" does not mean "Will not be getting ICS, May be getting JB" It means "Will remain at GB"
I hate to be a buzz kill but the effort might be rather pointless. We're dead in the water folks, abandoned by Moto and Google.
I'd be shocked if we ever get any support past today

Go tell the bastard. Flood him.
Not that it will help much but I put up a motonomore.com . I figured myself and anyone else can complain and cry and Motorola and Google can't edit anything. Maybe with a bunch of No More Motorola posts Google will either close their doors on Motorola or make them honor their lies.
Google and Motorola Mobility and the Dialer security vulnerability.
Reading other threads about the dialer vulnerability, I think Google and Motorola Mobility are now obligated to patch the Dialer + Browser security vulnerability. There are thousands if not millions of users vulnerable and if not upgrading us allows this to exist, then they have a class action lawsuit brewing. I honestly think Google should seriously consider their subsidiarys actions before this starts screwing the people with more money and legal advantages.
Motorola Mobility is evil and therefore Google is evil. ****ing crooks.
We should complain on the motos site cause if we do it here nothing will happen

Is harassing the new guy at MMI really going to help us? That's pathetic. Sure, I believe everyone at Motorola and Google need to understand that they let us all down, but I personally draw the line at flooding their social media accounts. Just wanted to put that out there. No need to debate it, that's just what I think. While I'm at it, posting false reviews for any phone is also a low blow. Now if you want to post a review that says that Motorola doesn't support their phones and that the phone will never see an upgrade... be my guest. Because that's honest.
I actually blame the Android community for stuff like this. The Sunfire is a great phone, and we all know it can run JB, at least AOSP JB. Maybe not JellyBlur, whenever that comes out, but AOSP JB, not a problem. We know because we've done it, and if Motorola released the source or whatever it is the devs need, and the transition/scrolling stuttering was wiped out, and the camera and camcorder worked... well, it would be awesome. But look, you can run Holo Launcher and Notification Toggle on the stock ROM (or CM7) and it will run fine. I don't think this gets you the best battery life, but it's acceptable. Now compare a Sunfire (either Photon or Electrify, it doesn't matter once you unlock) with the best phone on the market. I guess GS3 or Note 2. Is One X still a contender? What's the difference? Does Angry Birds: Space load a few seconds faster? They both run great and do pretty much whatever you need. But yet we tend to push for the next big thing while disrespecting those who are fine with last year's big thing. So is it really any surprise when Motorola abandons last year's big thing to focus on the next big thing? Not to me it isn't. But we don't want to slow down too much and retard the development like Apple has. We don't want to be 2-3 years behind. What we want, I feel safe saying, is a smartphone ecosystem where competent phones from the last few years can still get updates, as long as they can legitimately handle them.
Personally, I'd be willing to pay for these updates. Why should Motorola bring us ICS, when they could just have us buy their next phone? What if enough of us agreed to split the difference, and pay for the upgrade? Considering people are paying $15-20 for that one launcher, don't you think people would pay $35-40 for a software update? Granted, it would have to be prompt. I wouldn't pay $40 for ICS. Make it JB and I'll buy two (one for me, one for my wife). I'm perfectly willing to pay for software. I'm not asking for something for nothing.
But hey, at least we can get $100 towards a new Motorola phone that will never be upgraded to KLP if we turn in our phone and switch to Big Red, eh?
it really bad news for me, why?
i'm living in ukraine, not in USA where i can buy phones for contract, we have another prices on phones, with very big difference in money, and so, now i must.. sell my phone, and buy something new.. ok, thx moto, good phone, bad company.

Google still has nothing to do with Motorola at this point. You have no one to blame but Motorola. They've pulled this stuff for many many years now.

While I agree to some of your points, I have to disagree largely with most.
Why should I have to pay for an update that should be part of the phone?
Its ridiculous.
I don't need gaming or a few extra benchmark points.
But I do want to enjoy the new features of the software. And in this case, the Atrix and Photon are both capable of running ICS and JB effectively.
ICS code was released last November; 11 months ago!!!!
An ICS upgrade should have been released in April; or by June at the very latest.
It was not considered last year's big thing until Moto let so much time pass by.
Delaying it for so long and then saying that the phones are old and EOL, simply breaks customer confidence in the company.
There is just no excuse for doing that.
Here's what disgusts me:
1. What is the deal with the locked bootloaders? Why can HTC and Samsung sell phones that are so easily unlocked but Motorola not only has to lock theirs down tight, but when someone figures out how to get around it they go out of their way to release a minor update that patches the bootloader hole.
2. And then to top it off, they then cut off access to ICS or JB. WTF? If you don't want to provide us with an OEM ICS update, did you also have to lock the f'ing bootloaders down so tight that we can't either? This is what I really struggle to understand - whose phone is it? Is it not mine? I paid for it (and don't feed me the crap about the carrier "subsidizing it", that is a lie they push to force people into two year contracts) so why can't I load whatever software I want on it? Can you imagine buying a Dell or an HP laptop or computer and not having administrator access to your own computer? Or being told by Dell I can't load Windows 8 or Ubuntu Linux, that I have to stay on Vista or some crap? Hell, on my Xoom tablet I have to go through some BS process to get root access and it's a Wifi-only Xoom (so no lies about carrier subsidy - I paid full freight for the tablet). Why would it be locked down?
3. If they want to stick with the two-year contract deal, then they need to support the phone for two years. If a group of people who have jobs and school to attend can come up with custom roms with no access to source code, etc. then paid engineers with access to nVidia, Google, etc. resources can make an update and it doesn't take 9 months to do so. My Xoom had JB like two weeks after Google announced it.
I don't care how anyone wants to spin it, Motorola and Sprint absolutely fu'ed everyone who bought that phone. Mine did not function normally. I would have days where I would suddenly stop getting texts and had to do a battery pull and restart the phone and then would suddenly start getting them. I have no SBF available to me if I want to wipe the device and start fresh. I am running bone stock (I have 2.3.5 so I have no choice)
In Indianapolis, Sprint users have been paying that ripoff "Premium Data" fee for absolutely lousy 3G speeds and three Clearwire towers that I have connected to for a total of ten minutes in two years. I can't stream Pandora or Google Music at the gym or in my car. Unlimited data means nothing to me when I have to sip it through a 120 kbps straw. So Motorola, Sprint, Google and any other users can spin this any way they want but it is a giant, steaming pile of $hit that they just handed us.
Google bought Motorola for its patent portfolio. Otherwise, Motorola operates as a separate entity.

I've determined I really can't stand 2.3.5 and motoblur anymore.
Option 1: continue to wait and hope for a bootloader unlock, while feeling a little bit of anger everyday that I use my phone with it's lagging Android version2 (I cant even remember the codename it's so old).
Option 2: sell the photon on ebay and be rid of this nightmare
In making this decision, I'd love the communities input: what are people's thought on the likelihood of me being able to unlock the bootloader (after taking the OTA upgrade that locked it down, obviously) and gaining ability to upgrade this photon 4g?
I realize this may be pure speculation, but perhaps some people have better insight, and at least right now I have really no idea- for all I know, the bootloader could be unlocked tomorrow and I should just be a little patient. Or, possible I should stop waiting and move beyond kubler-ross stage 2.
Thanks, jetpeach
If you absolutely cannot tolerate Android 2.3.5 aka Gingerbread as a day to day completely functional OS and you cannot tolerate not being able to use ICS or JB on that phone, get rid of it. Like, now.
I have a Photon myself, fairly well known at this point, and I believe it is a great piece of hardware, and yes I would like to use ICS or even JB on it, it's not an absolute requirement for it at this point. Now, as a disclaimer I have to say that my Photon had/has 2.3.4 on it and I have successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted it dozens of times in my process of experimentation going back and forth from stock to custom GB/ICS/JB ROMs, and right now at this point I'm back on cybik's CM7 unofficial 9/30 build and it works great.
I know I could load up the stock pure 2.3.4 SBF and deblur it using Lokifish's deblur script but, since that CM7 unofficial has everything working (and I resolved the settings FCs using that CMParts.apk someone shared) and it's fast and snappy and stable so, that's that.
As for the locked bootloader, I don't have any hopes for those stuck with 2.3.5 at this point, but you never know when a small miracle will come. If you dump the Photon, get something that you love and is capable and you find yourself thinking "I'm glad I got this phone" and not "Boy I sure miss that Photon" then who cares. If the bootloader for 2.3.5 gets unlocked at a later time AFTER you've gotten rid of the Photon, I really seriously don't think you're going to cry a single tear over it because the new(er) device you replace it with will more than likely be better for you overall.
You have to look at it from the one perspective that matters:
Are you hating on the phone for it being a piece of crap that is 100% useless for you, or instead are you hating on just having a locked bootloader so you can't do a lot (if any) experimentation on it?
If you consider it to be 100% useless, again, get rid of it. Drop it on eBay and dump it while the dumping is good since the value does go down a bit every day in the big picture.
If it's useful as a smartphone (which of course it is), then keep it. That's about as simple as it gets.
Seems to me you've already answered your own dilemma in your very first statement:

Pretty solid statement there with only one logical conclusion: get rid of it.
Photon with GB is still a good device (even with the blur).
Cut your losses and move on.
Its time to dump it and label it the 'ex'.
sell it. you're missing out on a lot. the only thing that's maybe good for is webtop (ubuntop). jelly bean is where it's at. it's wayyyyy better than GB blur. bleh.
yeah.. the photon is my first android phone. the hybrid rom and ics theme/apps have make the phone better than stock.. but i wish we could get a leak too so i could enjoy 4g when i move. (i dont have it here atm so its not a big deal that it's broken.) but i might switch carriers when i move anyway so we'll see what my next step is.
You have been waiting since 2011 for an announced Q3 ICS... You won't see it before you die. I put the odds of a bootloader unlock in the next year at .01%, you got screwed, we got screwed too... but the only consolation is we unlocked first which makes it far less sucky. If I were stuck on 2.3 I would certainly sell it fast, the new features are awesome.
The issue is what you do *After* you sell it.
A wise man once said, Fool me once, shame on sprint, fool me... ya can't get fooled again.
October 29th Google announces a new Nexus phone, should be awesome, made by LG, Get the next 3-5 android updates. Prices on Galaxy Nexus phone should drop significantly (Already 230 off contract with Verizon) and even that should get future updates, GSM phones have large amounts of portability and get updates near instantly.
Don't get fooled again. "Photon Q will get Jelly Bean"... "Motorola has changed Baby, come back". Q2... Key Lime Pie... Q3... Maybe motorola is skipping JB to give us KLP right away?... Q4... "Sorry Guys, 100 dollar trade in! We will change next time."
Photon makes a great Android Touch.
And if you roam on Verizon you can buy 100 minutes for $15. Even if you have a bad ESN.
