What is it, and why is it different from the regular cache. And how do I clear it?

I like how the first search result is this thread.
Dalvik is, the way I understand it, sort of a pre-compiled Java. The cache, in general, is simply there to speed up commonly used pieces of code. You may want to clear it if you believe a piece of code is in the cache that is no longer used on a regular basis. Such a thing would be considered "stale" and would be thrown out.
When you clear it, Android builds a new cache. No harm will come.

The first search result for me does point to a forum post asking the same question but is another forum. It's not XDA-Developers and in fact, about the 2nd post down or so, someone explains what Dalvik Cache is.

Every time I try to go into the gallery to play a video...... BAM force close immediately, even before I try to play a video. This is a lot glitchier than I thought it would be, I can't even overclock to 1.9 ghz before BAM my phone freezes up and reboots, don't really care about the overclocking part but I REALLY need to be able to play videos on my phone. If you don't know a a solution than please recommend a video player I can download of the market

Never mind I just wiped everything three more times and then installed the ROM, now everything works, maybe it got messed up when i restored some apps with titanium backup.
That'll do it.

I take no credit here, member CCallahan turned me on to the subject free app. As someone that works in IT I should have figured this out myself. I play with my phones HARD!!! Some place here, I posted that my phone was slower, freezing sometime, could not make calls. CCallahan suggested I get this app and clear my cache. I ran it, rebooted, totally different device!! I have it set to clear automatically once a day!!
What app?

"App Cache Cleaner," it's in the Market.
I use QuickApp Manager to clear my caches and I like it because of the ability to exclude certain apps like Gmail from getting cleared..
But scrolling cache does it clear that... That's where the lag comes from

Since XDA will not let me post in the Android General because I don't have 10 posts, I'll ask here. So why do we have to wipe data/cache exactly when switching roms? I understand system obviously, and just know we have to wipe them all, but I've never understood why we have to wipe our data partition, but then restoring wipe titanium is just fine.. doesn't it just backup the data partition?

You might be confusing what the "data" you are wiping...you are not wiping your personal data, just data associated with the prior rom. So when you go to a new rom you remove traces of the old rom plus anything that may be in the cache. Having old rom settings can interfere with your new rom. Your personal data (photos, music, etc) will still be there. You only need to restore apps.
Never restore system settings or apps with titanium backup.

There are more than just apps in the data partition. ALL user settings are on /data/. Titanium only backs up apps.
The real reason to wipe data like the above post said is to remove conflicting ROM data

Yeah I think you're right, I've always associated data with apps only. What other data is out there? (not being smart, serious question lol)
Information that relates to the system level processes. Remnants that get left behind after clearing the different caches too.

Maybe this is to much to ask, but what exactly is in data/davlik/cache that is so harmful to new roms that they must be wiped? (I understand data more now).

Data from another rom will conflict with a different rom and cause issues..different coding etc etc its quite a few reasons honestly..just wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and don't worry about why wipe unless u like force closes and such lol

Hi,
I understand why you would not restore system settings but not apps? User downloaded apps that titanium has backed up should be ok.
Thanks,
Bryan
I'm not talking about user apps. System apps. Do not back those up. The only system data that can be restored are SMS,call log, and mail.

Just wondering.
Is there (in your opinion) an useful app to properly uninstall other apps?
meaning something like CCleaner that gets rid of the crap thats usually stays behind, just want to keep my SIII clean
suggestions are very welcome!
android assistant it has cache cleaner batch uninstaller and a lot more
you dont need such cleaner for android.

Such a cleaner is needed but not for things like registry entries and cache.
Its needed for those apps that directly store their data and cache on the memory card, and don't wipe it when you uninstall. The worst are those which create vague folder namers like "csdata" or something. How are you supposed to know if it belongs to an app you're using or one you've uninstalled?
There should be a better way to store large amounts of app data than mingling it in with user data with vague names.

Yes it is, just posted a new thread about Dolphin Browser (beta) causing standby drain, un installed the app problem persisted.
I found thread which contains app (requies root), that will boost our phones.
What do you think abut that? Pacebo effect, or it really works?

This mod would probably reduce RAM performance and I don't really recommend using it.
The problem with Android getting slower over time can't be fixed with a simple solution like this one, the problem lies mainly in the accumulation of dalvik cache and other junk-like files. I recommend just maintaining your phone every day.
I personally have just set titanium backup to wipe some caches every night at 2AM and reboot the phone. You could also include dalvik cache in the wipe. I hope that helps you guys out
+1 to venoma!
I too wipe cache regularly and reboot it once a day! That reduces the lag quite considerably!

absolutely not necessary
dalvik-cache and cache is there to be filled
dalvik-cache needs to be filled with .dex files and there is no point cleaning it unless you have some stability issues with specific app. I'm sure you know that it gets filled on boot(if it was cleaned or if there is new app)
Cache partition doesn't get filled so much that you need to clean it every day.Actually mine is pretty empty..
Once I had 1500h uptime, and no problems with stability or laggness (no more than on cleaned phone). First I though that Android is badly made and that it needs to be restarted every few days and cleaning cache but after these 1500h I don't think any more
So what you get after "cache clean" and restart is (99.9%) placebo effect
Good to know mate, thanks. Someone should make a thread about debunking myths and performance in general.
But i really do think there are some junk files accumulated. Sometimes there are remnants of old .dex files and cache on some ROMs accumulate like crazy. Though those are only my personal observations.
Sd maid does a great job at removing junk files... It's like a ccleaner for Android... Is there a ccleaner for Android???
