OK folks, I've loaded up the DCD Rom found here (version 3.3.4) and I now have a working GPS.
I noticed something, however, and that's that the GPS drains the battery fast. Reading some of the other forums, I've heard that Assisted GPS (one that uses the towers rather than the hardware in the phone) uses less battery power, but on the downside, is not as accurate.
Since I don't always need an accurate position, I was wondering if it's possible to switch between the two GPS versions.
Then it occurred to me - how does one know if I really even AM using the hardware GPS.
So.....
Here's some questions for some of you who know better than others....
1. How can we even tell if we are using the hardware GPS vs. the aGPS?
2. Is it possible to switch between the 2 without having to re-flash, or get into QPST?
I would think that this would be very desirable to switch between the 2.
.....and here's what I have....
Verizon XV6800
dcd Rom 3.3.4
Radio version 3.42.02
Thanks!
Gps does about no drain on the battery. Programs like garmin that run constantly using the gps drain the battery. Agps is great for fast accurate fixes. Standalone gps is great for accurate but slower fixes.
I would use agps if you have a data plan. The speed is the only difference. Just so you know agps pings the tower for your location and tells the phone which satellite to find first which is what makes it faster.
gps
seems to me I already know the Ans to this one, but I'll ask anyway.
I have a data block, that means no GPS for me with the 6800 Correct?
or is there a program I can load?

No, I think you should still be able to use "hardware only" mode.
yes you can use standalone gps. I do.
drewcam888 thanks for the help... but one last Question. is there a program needed that you would suggest?
*Edit* I had searched GPS and didn't find much for some reason, but now I do. I'll do my research sorry to ask, but if you have a suggestion I'll gladly take it.
I suggest quickgps.

How is the GPS in JI6. Is it perfect like in iphone and other devices or is it still jumping on the road.

Is this a question or a statement? I will try out the GPS today and see. I haven't tried it out since i flashed JI6.
The GPS is better but it is not 100%. Mine jumped off the road twice today and at least once the Map program stated that it'd lost GPS signal... My response to the loss of GPS signal was to reboot the phone...
Not perfect but then I'm okay with it... The apps are more stable than Bing was on my TouchPro 2...
My GPS has been working perfectly since updating. Just as good if not better than any other phone I have used.

No problems here with GPS. It is as you say 100%.
GPS sucks still. I couldn't get a lock while driving. When I'm not moving it'll take about 20seconds or so. But if I can't get a lock while in a moving car its pretty useless for me
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
the gps becomes better, but not perfect. sometimes it may take some time to access your location. i haven't tried it really outside.
Not as good as my old-and-gone G1, but at least it works now, which makes it better.
The GPS in my 3D is very weak. Even outside it does not lock well and the accuracy is poor. I tried using GPS Status app and re-initializing the data, which helped a little, but it is still poor. My EVO 4G locks almost immediaty under the same conditions. Any ideas?
I also have this issue, but it's not everywhere. The first week I got it, I was using the GPS in Detroit, and if the phone wasn't right by the windshield, GPS signal would be lost and it would have a tough time acquiring my location again until I put it up past the steering wheel, and even then, it had the little radius circle showing where I "approximately" was. I was really frustrated with that because it defeats the whole purpose of having GPS in a phone. My OG EVO never had this problem.
I tried it again around where I live in SW Michigan and it was perfectly fine in my lap. No radius, just a dead on lock. Not sure why it was having issues in Detroit.
I just tried it again. EVO 4G = immediate lock. 3D = no lock. It sees some sats, but after 1 min, no lock. WTF?
Same here I keep losing signal and searching forgps.. god its pissing me off .feels like I'm using an iPhone on ATT

Time for us to buy iPads I guess.
And I got a xoon guess ipads and iphones.
It upsets me that they put out somany devices yet they can't seem to fix any problems .
Speaker vol sucks
Gps sucks
Music playback sucks
4G sucks
No unlock bootrom
Battery life gotten better
Screen is alright (no retna display)
The phone is a downgrade from my EVO if it wasn't for the battery life I would have returned it
My main reason behind an android device is Gps and tether . If none of them work properly I might as well buy a iPhone it has better app support

GPS works fine for me.
What about music playback sucks? I haven't noticed any issues.
Bootloader will be unlocked and this isn't really something that needs fixed.
Do you know what resolution the screen would have to be to be >300 ppi? Problem is: HTC doesn't make a 1080x720 4.3" screen, in fact, no one does. Not yet at least. Take your pick: 4.3" or 300+ ppi
Not sure how its a downgrade.
If its so bad then why don't you get an iPhone? You can tether with a jailbroken iPhone and there are plenty of apps to provide turn by turn GPS navigation. Sounds like thats what you really want, so you should stop wasting your time with a phone that in your eyes is not good enough and go get one.
Bc I'm tired of feeding into apples gimmics . But HTC could spend a little more time working out issues with the device . Like I said the reason I'm keeoind the device is my EVO was best to death the battery lasts me the whole day and the processor is faster .. but if the iPhone was on sprint i would probably get it no way in hell I'm paying 100+ for my phone bill

Oh and the GPS does suck !!!!!! It loses signal all the time
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
For me it locked in under 10 seconds ( first time using GPS using GPS Status in my Car ) and accuracy was 5m. So its way faster than my N1 and way way way way faster than my Vibrant / Galaxy S
GPS on the 3vo is significantly worse than the 4G. The 3vo is slower to lock, significantly less accurate, and looses lock fairly often. It works better in Google Maps than other location apps, but is still relatively poor.
I brought the 3vo and 4G on a bike ride, and used Endomondo to track my ride. The 3vo was significantly less accurate than the 4G that was right next to it.
I hope they can fix the GPS issue (along with bluetooth connectivity, overheating, camera issues & radio issues I have experienced) in an update.

The GPS in your 3D is not 'very weak'...lol.
Google Maps is still trying to 'drive your bus', (so to speak), I'd bet.
This is a 3 step process; at least it was for me:
1) Delete Data from Google Maps apk.
2) NOW, you can use the GPS status trick.
3) Most important: You MUST update your profile. I just made sure my prl was correct at this moment before doing so.
reboot, enjoy.
It may take a bit for the profile update to 'catch', but I know that my GPS locks pretty much immediately now....This will solve any 'my 3g signal sucks, now' issues you may have as well.
Lmk if this helped.

ive noticed i my gps signal constantly drops out while navigating and the only way to get it back, is to hold it in the dash with absolutly nothing blocking it overhead. With my OG evo, i did not have any issues whatsoever, always a strong signal. does anyone else have this problem? im considering replacing it, unless its just a software issue that may be fixed in the next firmware update.
Same issue here.

Everyone's issue?
I want to love this phone but it seems im going to return it soon one i get it and get the optimus3d.
I do not want problems with any hardware or antenna.
I have some ideas. In /system/etc/gps.conf there are some lines that look like if changed would help. I changed the intermediate accuracy level to 100, and where it said disable.agps.in.wimax I changed that to false. It may also benefit to change the allowance if intermediate position to zero. And old hack we used to use was to add the line QOS_ACCURACY=16, but I think that's the same value hack as the one I just mentioned. Feel free to try these. I don't use gps much, so my modifications may go unnoticed. Ymmv

Waaahhh. How in the living hell do you know that an UNRELEASED device has "no GPS issues" - for real. Also, have fun with the awesome monthly premium you'll get for AT&T and their awesome network If you can develop a little patience, I would tell you HTC has awesome build quality, and the dev support for this phone is great, so GPS will get better. Maybe not by tuesday, but sometime.

You cant improve hardware with software...you can tweak to make it work a bit better...but it doesmt chance the hardware...
well the thing is, i believe the gps hardware is just fine. its probably the same chip they use in other phones. hopefully were just a few tweaks away.

do you use your Google navigation often? If its an issue thats not widespread, then ill probably just take my phone. I just dont feel like going through the hassle of getting a new phone if the refurb is going to have the same exact issues.
I have the same issue. Constantly losing GPS when I didn't have this issue before in my area on an Epic 4G. Sprint TeleNAV and Google NAV do it.
I’m an extremely heavy GPS user. I used my Evo as my GPS every day for work, and now my Evo 3D. In the year that I had the original Evo, not once did I have an issue. And by an extremely heavy user, I use it to locate 20-40 (depending on the day) locations a day, every day.
I bought the Evo 3D on launch day, for the first week or so the GPS worked great, it lost the signal once or twice, but I ignored it. Then one day it kept losing the signal a lot. I’m talking like 5 times in an 8 mile stretch on the same road. It started taking forever to recalculate, there was an extremely noticeable lag (it would say for example, my next action was a left turn 1.3 miles away when I already passed the road I was supposed to turn on to). Not only did the signal drop out while driving, but it would drop out while just being parked, and then it takes forever to require the signal. And my personal favorite when your five miles into a 17 mile long run ON THE SAME road/highway it will just randomly recalculate. What’s up with that? i assume these are the same type of issues everyone is having?
Now I took the phone back to the Sprint Store, I was within 30 days so they swapped it out for a band new one for free. The new phone worked great for about 2 weeks, and the same issues started happening, but a lot less frequently, it was tolerable, but so far this week it has been pure hell. This afternoon I lost count, but I was up to 157 instances (this week alone) where the GPS has lost the signal, rerouted me randomly or incorrectly, failed to properly update me of my next action, or just took forever to acquire the satellite signal. This week has been extremely aggravating, to say the least.
Here is one thing I noticed this afternoon, I’m not sure if this is just a fluke or what. I always keep my phone connected to a car charger when driving. For some reason I unhooked it and was running on battery, the GPS worked perfectly to get me from my last two stops of the day, back to work, a total of about 60 miles worth of driving. Not one drop out, not one bit of lag. Prior to that I couldn't go 5 miles without some type of problem. Tomorrow, I will be in an area I’m sort of familiar with and won’t need the GPS much, but I’m going to map out my stops anyway just see how it behaves on battery, until the battery gets low. That final 60 miles today took me from 100% to 55%.
Hello everybody from Xda,
I'm looking for a new phone for my mother and I am really interested to know what the GPS is like. If the gps is any good I will join the Xiaomi army.
Why am I so interested in this?
Well my mother her navigation system just died and, I would like to install the tom tom app on her phone, I've got it currently on my oneplus one without internet and it's great. My mom will also have no data plan with her phone so google maps or anything isnt an option for her
So my question to you guys is, does anybody of you have had any ecperience with the gps.
Thanks in advance XDA,
Deameong
I am curious about the same thing. I use GPS without any Internet or even phone signal (normally on airplane mode to save battery). And I would like to know how reliable it is.
Attached a Screenshot, few Seconds (about 30) after switching GPS on. GPS receptions is really good, from my point of view.

Just recieved it now,
Using google map and waze, locking on me very fast,
Looks good and stable with great reception of the GPS...
Can you say how much time in seconds need to lock satellites?
Thank You
Thanks alot for the advice guys,
Going to order it tonight!
I've just come back from holiday and I used GPS extensively with the offline Co-pilot app. It worked almost flawlessly both in the car and when cycling. I can't begin to tell you how much better it is than older MTK eqiluipped phones. Lock times varied from four seconds to nearly a minute. One thing I noticed is that it was much faster to lock in Co-pilot when I was connected to the internet. Accuracy was great, though I never went into a big city with lots of high rise buildings.
GPS, Wifi and network signal 2-3 times better than on my Note 4.
GPS is sick, in my room after 2-3 sec.

Hello,
Runkeeper with someone tried, I hesitate to buy the premium just because of that?
(avec Runkeeper quelqu'un a essayé, j'hésite à acheter le Prime juste à cause de ça?)
I really want to know about the gps as well. I use the gps so much. Now I have the lg g3, I would like to know if this one is around the same as g3.
Thanks
D.
Ill give uadvice gps locking depends onyour connection and area,i use gps in city with locking time vary from 10 -80 sec or more the signal was good but for gps signal its not good so it some time locks slower, this is qqualcomm 400 chipset ,newer version of mediatek might performs better and i have ever try gps with airplane mode one using gps test on aa mountain area and it lock 30 sec or less, the signal came out by it self with no connection so everything depend on your area and your xhipset ,newer chipset performs excellent on gps
I'd like to know more about how the GPS in this phone is faring for you because for me it's an endless horror story. Neither Google Maps nor Endomondo give even acceptable locations and tracking.
And the compass is so bad I wanna puke.
The phone is great in almost every other aspect, but GPS is fairly important for me and I'm starting to regret purchasing this phone. May it be fixed with better ROMs or is it a hardware fault?

I used it yesterday for half an hour in inner city traffic. The phone found the GPS signal in a few seconds with data connection, without it takes a minute or two. Navigation itself was worrisome. Went under a bridge and signal was lost for about 2 minutes. Then Google maps always thought I was going inside buildings or streets next to my actual route. Really weird.
Inside my room 2 - 3 seconds lock, the best gps on any of my past smartphones.

And what is that information good for since the moment you open Google Maps, Runtastic or something along those lines it doesn't have any accuracy and keeps jumping the whole time?
I'm sick of people sharing screenshots of GPS Test or GPS Status like they're proof of anything when what's really important is real life apps behavior.
This device GPS should be good..

I don't know what you're on about, but GPS Test uses the same API and sensor as any other app. I'm getting the same 5-7 second fix indoors from GPS Test and HERE Maps. Both don't jump around and show my correct position.

Well we use diagnostic tools to know accurately if something is wrong or not, nothing wrong with that. With GPS Status we can know how many sat signal we got, how strong, what is the margin of error, etc.
And i don't have any problem in real life apps and GPS status confirmed that fact.
If you want positive info or help don't start with a negative.

China ROM GPS problem
But with china stable rom, the map apps is using Baidu, and if your GPS location is not available, the device will report your network location (wifi/3G), which is in simplified chinese to your requesting apps, that sucks, however, I can't deny the hardware GPS here in RN2 is the best I ever used.
I tried GPS in the city. High accuracy, pretty fast lock and it worked just fine, no problems. Accuracy is usually 3-5m, 17 satellites in use on average. I'm not exactly sure what kind of problems you're facing. However, I can tell you this. A friend has Meizu M1 Note, the GPS was at first very good. But somehow at some point after updating, the accuracy's became horrible, 80m+ and it kept losing connection, IF it managed to establish one. It's most likely not faulty HW, but a misconfigured gps config.
