Battery Indicator no longer working after root - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Anyone else using Battery Indicator and having it not work after going through this unroot and hijack process from Indirect's thread? It doesn't work for me now as it doesn't show anything on the status bar. When I try and go to Display Settings it gives me an error "The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly." and Force Close. Just trying to figure out if it's related to the rooting or restoring one of the many apps from my Titanium backup.
Also, my Read In Store option for B&N did not work today when I was in the store.

Right after I rooted it back in December it was working in the Barnes & Noble store then. I'll check it again tomorrow.

Yep mine worked last week when I was rooted using DeanGibson's root, but I changed to Indirect's in order to take advantage of OTA block. Now I seem to have lost some functionality.

Indirect's OTA block method has removed my ability to use the B&N store properly -- can't complete purchases or download items that have been purchased. My solution has been to restore my 1.4.0 servicemanager, do what I need to do, and then restore the 9.9.9 version.

Nook customer assistant took one look at my device and said "Aah, it's rooted, routed mine as well. Sorry the instore 1 hour read option is not available to rooted Nooks.“
LOL even B&N folks are rooting.
I suspect this is a policy change after the 1.4.1 OTA. I am positive that it was available in Dec. post Christmas, 'cause I was not looking for it at the time I 1st went to B&N after I rooted & blocked OTA.
They still have the 53 page sample read though.

No, but I was on rooted 1.4.1 with DeanGibson's method and was able to ReadInStore. It was only when I restored to 1.40 stock then rooted with Indirects method, along with OTA block and ADB Hijack, that the RIS option was not functioning.
I prefer to keep the OTA blocking on, as I don't want to get an unexpected B&N surprise.
I tried to root with DG's method first, then apply the OTA block and it stopped functioning, so apparently you cannot mix the two (or you have to do it differently than I did).

Ok, I'm back to having the B&N full functionality.
I had to restore back to 1.40 using Indirect's one button Unroot method.
Then I rooted again, no debloat, and checked at my local B&N. Everything fine. I then applied the OTA block, and still have the Read Instore and ability to buy books. But I have not applied the adb Hijack option yet.
So not sure why it didn't work first time around, or what made it work after redoing the process, but it is working again. Tomorrow I will apply the adb Hijack option and see if it breaks anything.
Now as to the first issue of the Battery Indicator, it was due to restoring Launchpad Lite 2.7 from my Titanium Backup. This broke BI, so when I uninstalled it, everything is working.
Update 1/26:
Applied the ADB Root Hijack and went to the B&N store. This time RIS did work, however I had to reboot several times to see the InStore option. When I rebooted it was lost. Had to reboot again several times before it came back. So it does work but the B&N server must be very tempermental. My advice for anyone rooted and wanting to see the Instore option is to reboot several times and see if it comes up before trying anything drastic.

Does the OTA updates do it automatically?

I haven't opened my Nook Tablet yet, but was wondering about the over the air updates.
Does the tablet automatically update, without your knowledge, to the newest OS... or is it more like the iPhones over the air updates that tell you there is one available and you then can download and install it?

It does so automatically and without your consent as long as your device is "on" (e.g. asleep) with WiFi on. Turn off WiFi and you are apparently safe. My interpretation of other posts is that it won't happen while you are actively using the device but I've seen no hard proof of this.
Then I have a follow-up question. If it does this automatically... then how can I prepare my device for rooting and sideload apps. You need to be connected to the internet to do this at certain points. Won't it auto update before I have a chance to do all this?
Although mine is still sitting under the Xmas tree, you would have to connect to a router first before you could recieve a FOTA, so you should have the opportunity to turn off Wifi.

takes 3-5 minutes to download OTA update. Only turn on wifi long enough for downloads needed for root or just sideload them and you should be just fine. Follow video's on my channel if you need a walk through. I am uploading one now on how to block ota using indirects titanium backup apk patch
Since I already have Fotakill.apk on a SD card (transferred from my Galaxy Tab), couldn't I just sideload that into my Nook Tablet first before I do anything else to block the OTA? Will that work and then start the rooting/sideload steps?

Someone posted that the Fotakill apk didn't keep them from getting the update. Need to either freeze devicemanager or edit the settings file for it. There's an easy tutorial in the development section that does the settings file change for you using Titanium Backup.
So then what's the overall best way right now to Root/Sideload and kill the OTA's? I can use either windows or Mac and I also have a Galaxy Tab to grab apk's.
Too many threads on what works or doesn't work.
Can anyone confirm that the update will not hit will actively using devise. I can side load the five apk's that I want in short order. Then if I understand how the update works, I will still have access to the pre-update apps. after 1.41 is downloaded. I'm just not comfortable rooting right out the box at the moment. Long time member but first time poster, thanks to everyone for all info. on this site.
So if I just wanted to sideload apps without rooting... all I would need to do is
Enable "Unknown Sources"
Enable "USB Debugging" and other USB debugging further down
Untick Automount

Ditto. I wish we had a moderated sticky post at the top of the forum, with no commentary and no questions that provides the current known state of affairs with respect to preventing the over the air update. I know many of the devs here are tech wizs and while it may be obvious to them and think it is reasonable to squirrel through multiple forums and threads to figure it out, it would be so much easier for everyone concerned to have a one-stop location that a select few folks could keep updated.
Thanks and keep up the good work
If you were smart, you would've backup your apps and data with Titanium backup or similar app. If you got 1.4.1, do factory restore, reroot, and block the ota update.
OTA update are automatically. It happen when your NT is asleep and charged. Same with NC. You can do manually update too by copying the update zip to the media folder, I think from NC experience.
I have been nagged enough times, I am shooting a video today on restoring back to 1.4.0 and rerooting then blocking OTA

AT&T Software Update Message on my GS2

So, I finally rooted my phone yesterday.
Then, today, I start getting full-screen messages from AT&T saying that there's a software update and they want me to connect to WiFi to download right now. There's only a "next" button and no "cancel" button.
Is anyone else getting this nag screen? I've heard mixed reviews about this update (I presume 2.3.6) and I also read that I'll lose root if I update.
So, how do I kill the nag screen for good? And, if I go forward with the update, will my frozen and layed-over apps (apps I've loaded on top of frozen apps) stay as-is? Or will all the frozen stuff revert back to stock versions?
I did the root method on 2.3.4 that doesn't affect the counter or give any visual notifications, and I understand that rooting in 2.3.6 isn't as easy to do, so I'd rather stick with what I have no rather than go through the upgrade process. But the nag-screen keeps bugging me all day long!
Any info appreciated.
Thx.
I'm in a similar situation - I actually DID the 2.3.6 update, had terrible battery life, spoke to a CSR who said that rooting (in order to flash the previous 2.3.4 official firmware) would NOT void the warranty of my phone (i777). I followed the guide in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18576627#post18576627
Perfection -got my phone back to reasonable battery life, etc. etc. Here's the snag: went into a Barnes and Noble today where my phone automatically connected to the AT&T wifi hotspot and now my phone wants to force me into this update again! Blast it all!
To address your concern about going forward with the update - I would highly recommend not doing so. My battery life dropped like a stone on the update - I'm not talking about a slightly perceived decrease, I'm talking about 2.5 hours dropping me 40%.
To remove the update request, delete or freeze device manager. Do this if you wish to remain on UCKH7.
If you accept the OTA update to UCKK6 while rooted you will retain root.
Right or wrong, I froze Device Management through TiBu.
Edit: Not fast enough!

It's the 2.3.6 update that has been talked about here for a while now. Don't update it.
I have also seen the new prompt today. This is actually different from the first one that I was seeing about 3 weeks ago that said there was a new update and the only button was 'OK', this new one has a OK or Postpone. I selected Postpone and then was asked for how long 1,2,4,8 hours.
I have done the same as others and frozen Device Manager, however I am wondering what else this feature does. I would like to know if this will effect any other parts of my phone or just stop the OTA updates.
I had done the stock root a few weeks ago and had never seen anything about updates. Then I was reading about modems and thought I'd give the UCKH7 because I might have better call quality over the UCKH6.
Two days later, I'm at work and notice that my phone is getting warm in my pocket. I took it out only to find it was downloading something... after a little investigating I figured out it was an update and later was given the option to postpone. Knowing I better check it out on XDA before doing anything I postponed and then ended up freezing it with TiBu.
I guess this is an update specific to the UCKH7 modem.....
No, not just modem update. It's the whole update called UCKK6. Do a search and there are multiple problems with this new ROM.
DON'T do it unless you LIKE worse battery life, non-working BT HID devices and other quirks (some ppl have problem with phone calls using the new modem).
AT&T is obviously push the update to everyone now instead of the batch updates.
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> [All Tab] -> Device management -> Clear Data
That'll make it stop nagging you about the update until it goes out and checks again.
I have a rooted S2, and I 'checked for updates'
It said I can update my phone and the phone downloaded about 20 MB file by itself and asked for a restart to update the phone. I said yes, restarted the phone, but for some reason, it says, Update Failed.
You guys know the reason behind it?
Thank you
If you rooted and removed some bloatware, your update will likely fail. Why do you want to updat anyway after all the warnings?
You should have known that the minute you rooted your phone, you kiss good bye to official OTA updates. Sometime, it may work but most times it won't work.

You must be rooted.
The easiest way is to use Titanium Backup. If you don't have it, there is a free version as well as paid one. With the free version you can only delete, but with the paid version you can either delete or freeze any application. Install TiBu and then find device manager in the list.
If you want to do it manually, the file can be found in the system folder I believe. I don't remember exactly what it is called, however, and I don't have it on my phone to check.

Thank you. I've been looking for a way to stop the forced update reminders for a while.
It's insane that you can't stop this reminders easily and they are 'forcing' you to upgrade, specially when 2.3.6 seems to have so many issues as reported here and other forums.

Reading books in store with a rooted Nook Tab

Wifee took her Nook Tab to the local B&N store today and was not able to find the books that you are supposed to be able to browse while on the B&N WiFi. She took it to the Nook tech and they asked if it was rooted "because if it was rooted, it couldn't access B&N content".
It is rooted, but with no debloat. The B&N app store is available and works fine.
What is the deal here? If rooting is the problem, would Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper allow in store book browsing?
Thanks!
I was going to try this out in the next week or so...I am also rooted but not debloated, so I was curious if it would work...I'll post when I try.
This was dealt with & confirmed! Clicky
Thanks!
Does anyone know if temp un-rooting via Voodoo OTA Root Keeper would allow the in-store book browsing to work?
This may help.
Or this even better.

It didn't work for me. I did a temp un-root using Voodoo and rebooted and still no in store reading.
I was in my local store about 3 weeks ago and had no problems reading books in store.
I'm rooted 1.4.0 with ota blocked.
Just curious, how is your updates blocked? Mine is by changing the devicemanager file to get software version 999.
Does freezing it make a difference?

I am thinking they have the stores set that you can only borrow books if you are running 1.4.1 and since most people are running a rooted version of 1.4.0 it wont work but the rooted version of 1.4.1 does because its based off of 1.4.1
Actually I'm rooted 1.40 with OTA block so can't upgrade to 1.4.1.
With the caveats I wrote in the other thread, I can Read In Store fine.

New NT, got a few questions about rooting.

Hi everyone,
Just bought a nook touch today and while I really like the device I am a bit disappointed that I am unable to use some of the apps I have on my phone. I have previously rooted my Galaxy S 4G using a one click software from these forums so that is the extent of my rooting experience.
I looked and it does have 1.4.1 which as I understand is the cause of my problem not being able to use some of the apps I want to use. I also noticed that there are a few different methods of rooting this device which I find a bit confusing.
Does anyone know which is considered to be the easiest and possibly most reliable for people with limited rooting experience?
Hello , this is nook tablet forum not Nook touch, if you have the right device then there are many threads discussing this, there 3 methods the normal using a computer installing drivers and root, using an sdcard format it and root from it or after you install CWM restore/flash one of the ROM' s that already come with root, appspot and tweaks. Use the one you think is easier for you.
If you use the normal method as you're in 1.4.1 you need to first use the acclaim_update.zip "magic card" by adam outlet to go back to stock 1.4.0 . Lastly once you're rooted install CWM and wait for another release of CM7 or CM9.
PS:read the FAQ there is good information and a video section to make it easier for you to root

Unfortunately you can't because your NT came with 1.4.1 and B&N took down the ability of sideload apps, in 1.4.0 that is not aproblem.

You do NOT need to "root" in order to do what you want but you WILL need the ability to side-load app's which is only available in version 1.4.0.
Your option would be to "revert" (As Veronica Said) to 1.4.0 and install the app's you want. If you don't block OTA's however, your tablet will eventually be upgraded without your input back to 1.4.1 and the side-loading capability would disappear.
See This Valuable Post by AdamOutler for additional information.

I don't believe so but I'm not 100% sure. I think Once they have been side-loaded they will still work but adding more app's in the future will be blocked.
I have performed the steps in This Thread to block the updates (OTA's) if you are interested in taking it a step further.

Is there any reason to actually keep the 1.4.1 update? Like were any bug fixes actually addressed or was it just a big middle finger more or less? Also, was there any chance of a 1.4.2 update in the future and would my nt be able to even update if I blocked the 1.4.1 update. Assuming no on that one?

Nop there is no reason to keep 1.4.1. About what is fixed in 1.4.1 or what is new, well the only noticeable "new" feature is the lack of sideloading, the rest is a myth because anyone here have been able to see any difference beyond the sideloading thing.
Someone wrote that it supposedly have better battery life but so far no proofs nada de nada mi amigo.

Have you tried logging in to your nook account on the B&N website?
(Click on My Nook at the top and login. You should confirm that B&N sees and acknowledges your content on their servers.)
Then, assuming your purchased content is known to B&N, click on Manage My NOOK link and you should see your device listed. (And can match serial #s)
Perhaps your roomie created two B&N accounts with different email addresses?
You should deregister your device and re-register it using the same username and password that you used on the B&N website.
I rooted in December and kept the B&N stuff as well as the straight Android. B&N worked and one the straight Android I downloawed the app and it also worked. Now I'm running CM7 fro SD card and B&N app still works. I have my purchases, and can buy books for download. Placemarks also update to my simple touch when I want something a little lighter to read.
Are you sure your account is still active and you are registered?

Degistering SHOULD only impact the B&N content. If you were to take the NT back to stock with a full-on reset, that would be a different matter.
in a perfect world, database records ( proof of purchase ) don't disappear . . . and so then 'what you bought' stays. B&N has one 'BIG' advantage over amazon in that they have a 'brick & mortar' presence. so, you can walk in and be 'face to face' with customer support. hmmm ?
I just ran into this problem with my B&N purchases. Neither the stock B&N reader nor the download "see's" my purchases though they have my credit card number correct.
I checked and B&N does have my Nook registers. Luckily I don't have many books from B&N, most are from Amazon.
Since I'm rooted I won't be walking into the B&N to have them check it out.....

Just a shot in the dark at you... Use CWM to make a full backup, then unroot the device by again using CWM to flash back a stock ROM Image, allow it to upgrade to 1.4.2 then use the v4.6 rooting method mentioned in the FAQ / Tips and Tricks thread over in the General Nook Tablet forum. But make sure you register and verify you can download content BEFORE you apply the root. If you can't even on.stock ROM take it to B&N to get some answers.
I woudn't recommend get the 1.4.2 its not worthy for me. 1.4.0 has no sideload issues and you have the freedom to sideload in many ways.
There are quite some workarounds about this problem.
1st: You need to be registered in your nook to B&N services
2nd: if you have applied OTA block then try wiping the data of DeviceManagerService 2.3.4 app (you can use titanium backup for this)
3th: Reboot your device and try downloading something if it success then freeze DeviceManagerService 2.3.4 once done so you don't get the update and unfreeze when you want to download from B&N store again
NOTE: freezing DeviceManagerService 2.3.4 is not probed to be a 100% working solution and not sure if it will avoid updates like stock 1.4.2 and it is why is recommended to always make a backup in clockworkmod (CWM) because you may or may not needed in a future.
4th: if there is still not success downloading from B&N store could be for different reasons:
a. the root method you used
b. the modified stock rom you installed
c. if you for any other reasons than OTA block get unavailable under "About your NOOK"
d. if you have soft-bricked your device before and used Adam Outler total wipe or other method that removed your original serial ID's that will cause errors when trying to register to B&N service in your NT.
~ Veronica
With full root availible for v1.4.2 why not use the latest version? I mean, side loading works just fine after the device is rooted, I do it all the time. Are there issues that I am unaware of?
Quick update with the B&N issue...I ended up installing CM7 internally and downloading the B&N app and it worked fine. My library is updating again.
