I've recently acquired a Photon 4g and would like to root it. I've been using guides on XDA for a while now. Ive been rooting since the g1 and I've tied every method available for the Photon to no avail. I have the latest update so I think thats why the tordpedo method isn't working and I've tried both AIO roots with no luck as well. Can anyone give me any advice as to what I can do or point me in the right direction? Been searching the forum and google and I can find anything.
Side note, is it possible to downgrade and then root? Been searching downgrade on the Photon and again... no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You don't need to downgrade to root it. I used the one click AIO root on the latest update with no problems. And fyi you also need to unlock the boot loader on the photon, its not like how on other phones where once you root it your done.
Here's everything you need to know http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20331544

Wrong, just for this person to ROOT the phone he/she doesnt need to unlock the bootloader.
For them to root the phone you need to before running the AIO root you need to enable USB debugging on the phone.
To enable you go to settings >> Applications >>> Development >>> then enable USB Debugging..
Good luck chances are good that this was your issue.

I also used shabby's AIO one click. I bought my MoPho and activated it. I think it happened during activation, but may have been right after, it updated immediately updated to the latest firmware. When I set up one of the things I did was enable USB debugging. When I rooted it worked perfectly first try.
I'm a MoPho-er

I used the method described by qbking77 in his youtube video.
Go to youtube and search for "qbking77 photon" Its one of the videos that gets listed.
Hope this helps.

I tried that. I've installed the proper drivers. enabled debugging and it still won't root my phone. I've been rooting for a while and I followed the instructions to the T.

You're not giving us info to allow us to help:
- Error messages?
- Screen shots of your PC's DOS window?
- Was your Photon new out of box? If not, hard to tell what may have done to it. Maybe flash back to stock.

I guess you don't understand what I'm saying. On other phones when you root them that's all you have to do to run custom roms. On the photon to run custom roms you have to unlock the bootloader unless its 1 of the 2 roms where you can be locked. I didn't say you had to unlock the bootloader to root the phone.
No problem, just seemed as bad advice compared to what the OP was refering to.
He was having trouble rooting, he is obviously new and it seemed that telling him to unlock his bootloader was only clouding the issue.
He/she was having trouble rooting, so what would cause that? Certaintly not the bootloader.
Im at work so i dont have my laptop to give the exact error but ill give a brief explanation from memory. I installed the 32 bit drivers on my laptop running windows 7. I ran the aio and when it says thanks to creator(i forgot who but my version doesnt say edgan) i make sure o have debugging check and proceed. It recognizes the phone and runs fine up until it says erasing all your ****. Then it reboots and says device not recognized repeatedly then says you should be rooted.

Thanks guys for all your advice and help. I found my problem and I'm now rooted.
For anyone interested in the solution. I switched laptops from one with windows 7 to a xp laptop and every time the AIO said it was rebooting I unplugged my phone until it was fully booted then plugged it back in to be sure the program recognized it. Worked on first try with new machine.

Hi guys my girlfriend bought a LG Viper 4G LTE and she told me to root it to remove the sprint crap, so I was wondering if anyone has already done this and if yes, can they tell me how to s-off + root + custom recovery + and probably custom ROM.
If anyone can help, please I'll appreciate it. Since I searched here for that phone and is not even listed.
The phone is running android 4.0.4, is this ICS or Jelly bean?
I do not know how to get into fast boot boot loader cause I don't think it is POWER + VOL DOWN.
Thanks in advanced
Have a nice day

Im trying to root mine right now and can't seem to get it to work, I've tried Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v21 and LG-Viper-ICS-Root-tool with no luck. If i get it to run all the way though and reboot it still comes up without root and with no super user. I am starting to think I may have to find a way to downgrade it and root from there.....Did you ever have any luck?

I've downgraded and rooted so far and its working, I may look for a rom before i upgrade again.
Confirmed above!

I can confirm that the above will work. I have a refurbished Viper from Sprint that I got because my 3G radio quit sending. It would receive great, but couldn't send any MMS or upload anything while on 3G. 4G was great, just no joy on 3G. Strangest thing. Anyway, got the phone replaced, and on the replacement was of course the dreaded unrooted ZVK. Gotta have my root back...
So I decided to try all this stuff out, and It worked.
To add a little further info, if you've got a relatively bare install of Windows, especially XP, you might need BOTH the VisualC++ Runtime Redistributables from 2010 (mentioned in the above thread) AND the one from 2008! If you don't have both, the LG FlashTool will not run. You can find them on Microsoft's site.
Once the flash tool has successfully downgraded your Viper, make sure you perform a factory reset, as indicated in the instructions for the FlashTool. Then use the "Activate" app to get your 3G/4G on. After that, set up your Google account under "Accounts and Sync" in "Settings".
I did the whole operation completely on a linux system, using a virtual machine running Windows XP for the FlashTool, then the bash script from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43530152&postcount=3253 with the v.31 rooting tool from the original post in that thread.
I had to edit the script in a very minor way, as was pointed out by its author, so it could find my adb command. I just placed the path to that command in the line that said:
Code:
for test_adb in "adb" "stuff/adb"
in the place of the first "adb", so I got:
Code:
for test_adb in "/home/user/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/adb" "stuff/adb"
Make sure to replace "user" with your username, without the quotes.
Then I stuck the script in the same folder as the runme.bat file. After the script and root tool had done their work, my phone had rebooted a total of three times, and I had a perfectly functional Superuser app!
Huge thanks to LoveMyAndroid2010 in the post linked above. Great script - some love for linux!
Now to get RootKeeper and upgrade back to ZVK...
The aforementioned root method worked for me. Since I've rooted, I've compiled my findings into another thread. I haven't been able to unlock the bootloader yet, unfortunately.
how to upgrade LG Viper to Jelly bean or higher
After I root as per instructions, how can I upgrade the OS?
Please help. I'm a newbie and would appreciate any help you may offer. Haven't rooted any phone before.
I have an AT&T Motorola MB860, or by its regular name Motorola Atrix 4g running gingerbread 2.3.6, and i have tried rooting this thing so many times its making my head spin. The device just wont root no matter what i try. It is in USB Debugging mode and i unmount the SD card every time i attempt a root. I have tried super one click, Z4 Root, Rescue Root, ICS Root, and unlock root. In super one click it has an OS version check failure asking if my os is 2.0 or higher, and fails from there, and in ICS root the device shuts down completely once the process has started preventing it from rooting. I have updated all my motorola usb drivers as well and im still getting nowhere. In Z4 root which im using 1.3, i installed off of a website supplying the .apk file, it gets to shell rooting and the program fails completely. I have to reboot to retry and every time it fails. I put the phone in windows media sync to attempt the root each time and its just not working. The devices Boot loader is also still locked if that makes a difference in the devices rooting ability, but its infuriating me and I just cant get this to work! My plan is to root the device to make a full image file so that i can install full ubuntu dual installation alongside android. If the device soft bricks then i have the image file to recover android. please help if you can. I also have trend micro internet security installed on the phone if that makes a difference which i believe it shouldn't.
I think you need to unlock the bootloader to root and you'll want a custom recovery on there also. Maybe try a more manual rooting method, these all in one tools are great but you don't really learn anything or fully understand what you're doing to your phone.
My advice to you would be spend time reading up on the very useful threads and guides here at xda and then find a method for your phone and current software / firmware and then go from there.

I heard that unlocking the bootloader will cause a 100% user data wipe through the ubuntu wiki page on installing ubuntu. In a way if thats true its backwards because i need to root the phone to make an image file but unlocking the bootloader will wipe the personal data and then im stuck with losing all my apps progress and data. Do you know any active threads explaining how to do a manual root of the MB860?
only rooting your phone can be done with super one click root (google it), make sure you have the proper usb drivers for the atrix
I did it before unlocking bootloader and it worked just fine
When i unlocked the bootloader there was no user data wipe.
To root try googling the preinstall method.

Super One Click also did it for me
2 things I found that was required before it worked...
1 - turn on USB debugging (as frequently noted)
2 - when connected to PC via USB - use Motorola Phone Connect option
Also - re unlocking
google "atrix 4g unlock_v4.2.zip" and follow instructions using the said zip file
use IHOP_Bell when it comes to RSDLite part (for Telstra MB860)
(connect via Motorola Phone prior to beginning)
use all precautions with RomRecovery noted in forums

Hi folks. I am not allowed to post in the developer forums since I am a new user so I figured I'd try here and hopefully some developer will be watching this forum.
I want to root my new Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. I found the thread regarding the all in one tool for doing the root and installing recovery.
I followed the instructions, downloaded the tool, connected my phone, invoked the tool and selected Option 1 (Root my phone). The cursor skipped down one line and then nothing. I waited 15 minutes to make sure it wasn't doing anything but that's it, nothing.
I am new to Android and therefore new to Rooting so I thought this all in one tool would be perfect for me to get the job done. But I now have no idea why nothing happens when I invoke the tool and select Option 1.
Is there somebody in this forum who can help me please?
Thanks ............ Rob

Once you select Option 1, you need to go back to the main windows to uncheck one box (F something) and then click start before it does the rooting. I missed it yesterday also and just keep waiting until I realized there was a step I didn't do.

Did you enable USB debugging and third-party? USB debugging can be found by tapping on build number (i think) under about phone like 7 times. Developer options should appear in your settings after that. Third-party sources is under security I believe. Hope that helps!

I actually found my problem. Even though I had the usb debugging flag set, when I tried to root, a popup window came up in the background asking me to confirm that I wanted to enable usb debugging. Because it was in the background I kept missing it. Once I saw it and replied, everything worked perfectly. Hope this maybe helps someone.

Root just allows you to hack the software on your phone, and the "unlock" refers to the bootloader. It does not unlock the phone for other carriers; this is done (from what I understand) by dialing a specific set of codes, generally provided to you by the original carrier of the phone if you have an account in good standing with them and you tell them you plan on travelling out of the country and need to use GSM. I have never needed to do this and as such only have a minor theoretical knowledge of the subject; I would appreciate it if somebody with more knowledge on this would confirm or deny my suspicion that you are better off trading the phone for an AT&T/T-Mobile one that actually was meant for GSM, or otherwise obtaining one.

This is the original bootloader; not the stock firmware. You need to flash this after you successfully root, start the phone, start SuperSU, and update the SU binary.
The full stock firmware is rather large and available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289325
might not know as much as i thought
thanks for telling me this first of all, so let me see if i get this right and im hoping you or someone will tell me if im correct or not. The all in one root method does that take care of the whole SuperSu, and update part or do i still need to do that after the root tool does its business? With unrooting do i just need to flash the stock firmware in odin use triangle away and i should be good correct, im not quite understanding the whole thats the original bootloader....the file that downloads is a .tar i thought that was firmware/rom....what do i need the original bootloarder for exactly? I honestly am to the point id be willing to pay someone who has a credible rep to video chat and walk me through it all

The original bootloader is locked and doesn't allow for us to use the exploit to install SuperSU and root the phone.
We are installing the unlocked bootloader via Odin...
Then running motochopper to exploit a vulnerability to gain root...
Then MANUALLY (this can't happen automagically) opening SuperSU and updating the SU binary...
Then rebooting the phone to make sure you still have root (personal preference)...
Then re-loading the original bootloader (we don't need the modified one anymore!) via Odin...
Then we are done!
The steps in the how to are very precise and accurate. If you would like to PM me, I am available for another hour or so.

Well said. Only correction is the bootloader still remains locked. The recoveries included are loki patched. This bypasses the bootloader. All roms and kernels are loki patched so flashing them is safe. This is as close as we're gonna get to an unlocked bootloader for now.
Ah. I was under the impression the bootloader was unlocked. Thanks for the info.

Could be a couple of things first make sure your using the cable that came with your phone. Try switching usb ports. Alsi try rebooting your pc
I have read for hours and done everything suggested.
I got my friends Note 2 Stock.
I tried casual and get the error libUsb over and over
All my security measures are turned off.
Samsung drivers installed(went thru the whole uninstall ,reinstall etc)
Java updated
Win 7
3 different cables 2 different USB ports
I am rooted with Route 66
Weird part is I am on 4.1.1 and VRAMC3
Is there another way to just UNlock other than Casual?
I am adding another question and would appreciate any response as I can't seem to find the answer.
Is there another method to unlock bootloader?I am rooted.
I only ask because although I am happy with being rooted ,I want to try out a newer version of Android.I am on 4.1.
Is there a Root 66 with 4.3?

edited og post with another question.Apologies for being a pest.

thank you for responding.I tried Casual on a different pc and got pass the Libusb error but ran into a "handshake" error. Will research the new error.I wish there was another way to unlock. It's weird that casual doesn't like my pc for the Note 2 but worked great for my S3.

Okay, so you're not unlocked then.
I see all your posts but I'm going to ask the basic questions anyway.
The first pc is obviously having issues with drivers. Seems like the second is good to go.
Do you have USB debugging enabled in Developer mode?
When you click Do it in Casual does your phone automatically reboot into Download mode?
Yes it does boot into d/l and I did have usb debug checked.I have the hand shake error but was able to get past the usb driver d/l

Okay well here's my suggestion. Use Odin to flash KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar so you will be completely stock 4.1.2 with VRAMC3.
Then do the unlocking process with Casual R515b found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066
Don't use the nightlies...the nightlies have given me problems.
You said you were on 4.1.1 with VRAMC3... that might be the issue you're having.
If you do this I don't see why you won't be able to unlock.
Thanks for all your help.My wife is finally dumping her Iphone and likes my N2 the way it is so I'm moving on to the N3.I sincerely appreciate all your replies.
I've been all over the forum and cannot find any ACTUAL information on rooting the ZTE Warp Elite N9518 for boost. The one thread that says "COMPLETE" directs only to the root any phone area. None of those methods say they are compatible with this phone... please help. Been reading for days... last thing I want to do is brick my phone.... I was directed here by XDA assist
I concur, I can not afford to brick this beautiful phone. I saw a twitter post claiming that some guys root app can do it for our phones if they're 5.0.2 Android like oohokay they come with 5.1 mister click bait scammer... Tho getting into recovery and activating developers settings is easy enough on the warp elite.

Has anyone with knowledge of how to root phone made any progress with this particular model? Or do we have any skilled members willing to give it a shot? I'd love to get this rooted to clean it of all the bloatware

Run kingoroot, then uninstall the kingoroot superuser apk then you will have temp root until you reboot. I have made a little progress over at the Android forums. I have got boot and recovery images using Flashify.apk and got the /system though I think it is not a flashable image. I can't get nandroid online backups to work though. I'm still a boob at this.
I would be willing to put $10 towards paying the developer who can come up with a root for the warp elite 9518.
I know its pocket change but I'm hoping I can start a list of people who are willing to pledge some money, 5$-10$, I would keep a forum post with the user names of the people willing to donate, and the total amount available for payment upon a successful root. Offline I will keep that same list but include their first name and amount they would be able to pitch in. All money will stay in the donators possesion, until an agreement is made regarding dev payment
Hopefully a capable dev sees this as something they could do if they were compensated for their time. I just need to run this by the admin here to see if this is something I can do that wouldn't violate any rules.

I have successfully rooted the N9518. i used the kingo root for windows. I did a hard reset of the phone and after the reset went into settings where it said pc connections i the enabled the debugging and had the connection setting on the one that said install drivers. It says that setting is used when first connected to a computer or when the drivers were unavailable. I ran the kingo root, connected the device, waited for it to show the model then clicked the root. Somewhere between five to ten minutes later it said root succeeded. I verified the root using two different root checkers and i have pictures of the verified root. I will do another post with the pictures as soon as i figure out how to post them on here.

Hello I need to correct the post I made. The root access that I had for the N9518 was just a temporary root access. still figuring out how to make it permanent.
I just ordered the phone it will be here Saturday, if I can get temp root I think I have a pretty good idea how to make it permanent, I was the first and only one to find permanent root on the LG Stylo 2 and my method is pretty universal.

Im not a dev either just a dude who loves messing with android. As soon as I get it Saturday I'll start messing with it and if my technique works I'll post a guide. Also all I can say is never update until you get root most of the time security patches are patches for root vulnerabilities and we want those root vulnerabilities, so if you havent updated good, if you have well try not to update any more if it pops up.
the method does not work

So the method that you recommended did not work for me the only way I had gotten the temp root was the kingo root over usb connection it gave me a temporary root then I tried to follow the guide that you sent me the link to when I did that and rebooted the system the root was removed. So I went and removed the kingo root and went and installed the king root tried to root it that way it failed twice and then on the third attempt to root it soft bricked my phone and I had to factory reset my phone. So no root yet, maybe you will have better luck. I shall continue to look for a way to make the root permanent, and will post anything I find. There has to be a way, there just has to. Good luck

I know what might of went wrong I just did my technique on my 3rd completely different device today, ran to a little problem and fixed it I'm going to wait until I get my phone Saturday so I can physically do it then I'll re write a tutorial on how I did it if I succeed I'm very confident it will work
i just got the phone, been messing around with it didnt realize it was so locked down I only have been able to get temp root once then lost it from a mandatory reboot, gonna keep at it hopefully soon anyone will find root.
Tried KingRoot, made it to 27% on 2nd try but had to factory reset twice.
