I was just wondering. I know that Eclipse is the way to go, at least per the Android SDK website. But, I was curious what OS do most of you use? Windows or Linux? I'm currently setting up a Linux box and was going to use that to start learning Android development. I'm getting bored of doing .NET development at work and want to learn Android programming in my spare time (of what I have) and possibly to start developing apps.
What are some of the pros and cons of developing between the two OSes?
Thanks!
I stopped using Winblows when i randomly lost the ability to SBF with it.
Go Linux and never look back.
besides, virtualbox runs windows under linux better than windows runs by itself.
I used windows because it was my main OS and I used Ubuntu studio for audio recording. Windows has a lot of good tools available..like 5:1 with Linux.... Linux is good because you can Dev from source better/easier.
Now I main Ubuntu because I can play wow on it now...

I used to run Linux all the time, then when my kids got older and wanted to play various educational games from the library, I had to go to Winblows.
I do like Win 7 and now, with the kids tapped into technology at school, it's almost a given that I have to have Windows at home.
But, on my other machine (it's a p4 2ghz - ouch), I'm installing Linux and wanting to do some work on that machine so I don't have to dual-boot between Windows and Linux. Plus, I have WAY too many games (like Skyrim, Fallout, etc) on my Windows PC that I can't run Windows in a virtual machine, even though that machine is a quad-core with 8gbs of RAM and a high-end video card.
Anyways, as long as I can also SBF from Linux (which I googled and found out I can), it sounds like I'm going in the right direction in regards to using Linux for my programming Android apps.
Arch Linux, though I don't really do Android development, mostly because of the webapps I'm working on.
Gentoo/Funtoo are quite nice as well.

I've been doing everything with Linux since I first installed Red Hat 5.2 back in '98. Today, I run either Ubuntu, for whom I developed and bug tracked, and Debian, because I'm still a purist at heart..

Hey guys, what are some of the advantages of installing Ubuntu Linux on the HP touchpad?
ubuntu is a desktop OS. so you have a lot of stuff you can install (or compile yourself and install)
i.e. full office suite via LibreOffice. full photo editing suite via Gimp
(of course using them might be more difficult on the touchscreen, since you're supposed to use keyboard+mouse)
ubuntu is a beginner friendly distribution.
with unity as wm it is more optimized for touchscreen devices than the old gnome2 for example. and there is an arm build
Ok thanks, so it's only needed for like more of a person who is business orientated or someone who is looking to edit photos. I don't need office on it at this time nor do I edit photos. So is it better off not taking a chance installing it and messing something up that I might not use? Would you still be able to run WebOS?
right now, unless you don't follow the instructions properly, ubuntu is set up as chroot (meaning it opens INSIDE webos in a card). if you close ubuntu, you just discard the card (like a regular webos app)
if you don't want-to-mess/know-how-to-use linux/ubuntu, dont touch it
i use linux/ubuntu enough, and know my way around it, and like the extended stuff it provides
webos has few apps. ubuntu programs can run(so long you compile/find an ARM .deb)
you surely should first sort out what you do there by installing sth.
actually ubuntu runs in a chroot on the touchpad. so its not like you flash a new rom and have ubuntu running (natively) its more like in a virtual machine.
and if you have no clue at all, dont fiddle with things!
before I attempt this.. Can you install gnome desktop or another distro like Linux Mint which I use on my notebook? Or is chroot the only version you can use?
Hi guys, I've seen that some clever chaps have linux running on rooted primes and this got me thinking whether I could use the prime for web development .
I do this at the moment in a virtual mac on my windows pc but if I could get mysql and php running in a linux but of prime , then surely i could load a wordpress blog onto it and tweak around things before ftping upto my actual site ?
Is this likely to be possible ?
Hm, maybe read about chrooting Ubuntu? That would be probably easier for that kind of work. I myself prefer to keep everything on FTP (even test versions of sites) so I don't have to install anything on my computer / tablet.
Give or take what is in the market, you need to setup a Debian or Ubuntu chroot and run the usual stuff using an X11/VNC bit. The Android browsers don't have the tools (e.g. anything like Firebug or Dragonfly).
Other wise it works fine for web development.
Hi all,
this may be a silly question, and i apologise if its already been asked....
so on my Windows 7 laptop, i want to run some old programs...i use the Windows XP virtual machine feature....
is there an equivalent app for ANDROID that i can install on my HDX8.9 that would effectively allow me to run a stock rom 'inside' the virtual machine?
...and obviously get full play access ....or there would be little point.
obivously there would most likely be performance issues etc. and you are running and O/S within an O/S which some may find confusing or cumbersome.
just a thought....anyone know?
regards
Dale
Safestrap I believe. 13.3.1 or 14. You have your original OS and then allow you to create another Android OS(kinda).
I think I missed the whole idea you were getting at...

There is a way to mount linux in a rooted device- without actually installing it. Oracle might have worked around that- but the problem with a virtual machine is they are not actually installed. Something as easy to run as android could work- but seriously, that could work.

Your only option is an emulator, since windows runs on x86 and kindle has arm. Snapdragon 800 might be powerfull enough to emulate a windows xp, but be prepaired for serious perfomance issues. You should use the oldest version of windows that your software runs on. But for native android apps use 1mobile market.
Thanks all for the responses....just to clarify, what I was trying to ask is is there an app for android like the Virtual PC app on Windows that runs Android.....so I would be running a sandboxed android on android lol, kinda hoping for an alternative solution to the current root crisis....I.e. I have no root and its really frustrating that the awesome hardware in my HDX is crippled by not being able to access the play store....never mind the fact I can't load additional keyboards or wallpapers etc.

I'm sure you could run it in chroot, you'd have to create a bash script to boot it

No there is no application that allow that which I am aware of. But this almost what safestrap does.

Just recently started building these for one of my laptops. Not sure how great compatibility is to start but it ran and installed on every device I tried on, mostly devices from within the last 5 years 64 but capable.
One problem I noticed on some older devices, it doesn't auto boot. I will post instructions to get the image to boot shortly.
***Directions to install***
1. Burn to usb drive:
Code:
#sdX should be your usb device
dd if=/path/to/img/chromiumos-1.23.15-x86_64.img of=/dev/sdX
Or use equivilant windows tool to burn similar to these directions http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
2. Boot from USB drive, some devices have errors, fix will be posted soon
3. Switch virtual terminals to get to a text prompt - CTRL+ALT+F2
4. Login - username: chronos password: password
5. Elevate privs:
Code:
sudo su -
#type password again
6. Run installer:
Code:
/usr/sbin/chromeos-install

Right now just building from master at https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/manifest.git
Plan on forking things soon

Thanks to everyone who is working hard on the Chromium OS project
Is there any way I could run Chromium OS on an old Mac Mini?
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app
I have an interest in Chromium builds. I am trying to find ones that will work on a wide variety of hardware.
Like: Acer Aspire One 722-0473. This one has 64 bit Amd c-60 dual core, Radeon HD and Atheos wifi. So far everything is locking up at the first screen where the 3 drop down menus are. I would be perfectly happy to boot with 32 bit, lite distro.
Like a Dell Latitude D530. Appears to have Broadcom wifi but won't boot at all. Gets to the unpacking kernal screen and starts complaining.
Like a Dell Inspiron 910 Mini. This actually has a small SSD. It boots but doesn't recognize the touch pad.
I have had to resort to Chromixium.org which has a chromebook look-alike project.
Or to Zorin OS which has a Windows 7 look-alike that maybe I can get to automagically start Chrome browser.
I both am curious and there is actually a business opportunity out there. Installing a "more or less" production version of Chromium OS on old/slow netbooks could become a side job if I could get them to work.

If its Intel hardware it should work, there might even be something for their old ppc hardware but not 100% sure.

I can't make any promises on functionality, I have only explored the source a little bit and I am sure troubleshooting without me having the same exact hardware will be hard but I will put something up for you guys to test. Keep a look out for it in this thread in the next day or 2.
There are a few things I have ran across for getting it to boot from USB so I will most likely update op with some directions and notes that I have.

Can we install Windows 10 on the S7/S7+?
LMFAO
Please tell me you're kidding?
Yes we can.
FAQ
It's not as stupid of a question as you guys make it seem. Windows 10 ARM version exists (but there is no way to get a legal license and/or installation media for it) for the Surface Pro X and a few other devices. Of course there would most likely be no drivers, but in theory Win 10 COULD be possibly.. but yea in reality it's not at the moment.
Is anybody able to use a windows emulator? I tried Linux on it but wondering if there's a better way to use Windows apps if I need to other than remoting into my PC

I've found a few solutions to this. Ibochs works but is basically unusable. TeamViewer allows you to wake up your home PC and control it. This works surprisingly well if you have a good connection. Microsoft also has an app called Azure that lets you use a virtual desktop for less than $.01/hr if you can't wake up your home PC over ip for some reason
I'm going to go out on a limb here and use a throwback analogy... Much like a free ride from a partner with an STD... Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should... LOL
