I want to use my pc from my tablet to play runescape has anyone got any clue how?
The image quality/fps over a remote connection may not work too well for a flash game, but it might be playable. I have attempted vnc and remote desktop clients on android in the past, but my favorite is LogMeIn which is $30 in the market but has no monthly fee. LogMeIn works really well and gets around firewalls without any effort.

I was looking at that at one point..not sure...would be easier if this ran java lol
I use Vino (linux VNC server) on my netbook and access it using my Android devices using androidVNC. There's hardly any lag, and you could use that to play Runescape.
Both VNC and Team Viewer work wonderfully. I have both and regularly access my home pc with TV.

I have a dual boot pc but I was hoping for something in the windows vista area please and thanks for the information ...Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated I am just looking for ideas and I will try some thanks guys.

may help. They seem to use an vnc client called mocha (available on Market), and RealVNC on the windows machine. I haven't personally used this.
I use PocketCloud on the tablet with TightVNC server on the windows machine. The performance is good, but not good enough for games.

Yea I'm attempting to use RealVNC with and vnc pro
+ 1 for logmein but again, I don't use it for games.

Anyone try out the Ubuntu Installer on the Play Store with the TFP( link below ) I wanna give it a go but was wondering what other peoples experience with it is first. I saw there is a way to run Ubuntu nativly on our device, but it seems like it may be a bit 'new' ( as in driver support etc... ) which I'd be ok with, but the dual boot process seems like a pain to have to change the boot image everytime you want to use it...

Yes, I have been messing wth it since I got my Prime a few months ago (running Linux on it was the reason I bought in the first place). Like you, the native stuff seems a little too "fresh" and the risk of a brick a bit too much.
Anyway, the Linux Installers Zac is doing can work well on the Prime. There is an issue with the Ubuntu 12.04 Unity at present which I have not been able to figure out as I can't deal with Unity for longer than bout 60 seconds before reaching for Xfce anyway.
I have had good results using the Ubuntu 12.04 image and installing Xfce. The VNC client you choose makes a huge difference. I have found Jump Desktop by far the best (middle and right mouse buttons, scroll wheel, dock keyboard all work great) and it is quite close to using it natively.
The real downer with the chroot methods is there does not appear to be any way to do it except by running the GUI/X as root while in Ubuntu. Not really a workable option for any long term use. This is down to how Android handles permissions and the use of TCP/UDP ports. If you try to run the VNC server as anything other than root you just get a permission failure. I have not been able to figure out a way around this yet.
Worth the download to try it out.

Unless you plan to keep it in the dock all the time - then why not just buy a netbook?

You don't have to take two devices with you if you have Ubuntu installed on Transformer. If you had a tablet AND a netbook the weight would be doubled... Netbooks also have poor screens and probably less battery life.

Versatility, choice, and because we can
Android is great for some things but a lot of what I do would be much better done in a Linux environment. The Prime has replaced my laptop, and having a dual boot option would make it pretty much the perfect piece of kit for me.
I didnt realise this was available !
I will be giving it a go as soon as i get home!!
Would prefer a native install, but this looks pretty easy and quick to do, so i'll give it a shot.
And another nice thing we are not able to use because of missing root rights
I really hope somebody finds and publishes a new way to gain root. (without unlocking)
Running Linux on it was also a reason for my to chose the Prime.
Great comments all... Personally I want Linux on the Prime for some of the reasons above ( portability, not having to carry two machines, "because we can" lol ) however I mostly want it because it should offer a much better development environment on the Prime which would be great. Still haven't gotten it up and running yet, but bought everything I need, should be able to play today

Anyone having problems unzipping the beta Ubuntu 12.04 Full V1 download to get the image file? I've tried various unzip tools, and multiple download attempts, and it always comes up corrupt. The 12.04 small works fairly well.

Haven't tried that one yet, gonna start with 10.10 large, then move to 12.04 after...
Do you have to unlock prime to use this? I have root, but it says something about needing kernel or something on the app.

No it shouldn't have any affect. It does not touch anything outside of /data/local (or wherever you install the ubuntu.img file - could be your sdcard) - no system files are changed.

I think there was an issue with the Full V1 file. The dev re-uploaded today so you might try it again. However, the default Unity interface on Full does not seem to work on the Prime for whatever reason (Tegra 3 differences it has been said) so it might not be worth the effort until that is fixed. Firefox also does not work (I have never got Firefox of Chrome to work on any of these builds)
The older Ubuntu version (10.10 was it?) works fine, except Firefox just crashes, and Midori is the only currently working browser

Your kernel needs to support the loop device which is the way that the ubuntu.img file gets "mounted" on the system. I dont recall if the stock kernel supports this but I would be surprised if it doesn't
Stock kernel apparently has the loop device, as I have been able to run Ubuntu on stock (rooted of course).
Thanks for info on new upload of 12.04 full. Didnt you say you installed Xfce and 12.04 worked well?

Yes, Xfce I find works well. Just did not know how much effort you might be willing to put into it
Bit of advice - don't use "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" to change to Xfce. That wants to install a ton of stuff that is not needed. Just try installing the the meta package "xfce4" and then add the other bits you want. I then removed the Unity desktop and it booted straight in to Xfce.
Edit: Actually, in this 12.04 image doing "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" does not appear to be as bad. A previous image wanted to download 750Mb of stuff!
Edit2: Oh, and to get xfce loading instead of Unity, you need to edit /root/.vnx/xstartup and change the last line:
/etc/X11/Xsession
to be
startxfce4
..then restart the linux chroot by typing exit

Great info I have the 10.10 full image up and running and Firefox does seem to be working fine for me "out of the box". Think I'm going to try the 12 image and Xfce next.
Anyone have any optimization tips and tricks to get this running as fast as possible? I'm trying the Jump VNC client, seems pretty nice, just need to get some kind of gesture to hide the tablets nav bar as it covers the screen.
Hey Barryflanagan, I'm playing with Zac's images and I am wondering if you got ubuntu to read any external storage media plugged into the dock : like sdcard or usb external drive. I don't know if it's because of the dock proper, or ubuntu, or chroot, but I got the prime on ubuntu to read microsd on the prime proper but nothing routing through the dock..
As to why I'd want both linux and android, most of the time I'm fine with android, sometimes with the dock sometimes without. I don't have a laptop anymore and 2 weeks ago I happened to get to my first need that android couldn't handle: I have to trim and clean 10 000+ files of music library with many copies and variations by file names, lengths, quality, and tags, and to pick the good tracks manually, and nothing on the android's ecosystem is as good or useful as mediamonkey. I've had to borrow a laptop from somebody to get the job done. I'm pretty sure in linux I could have found a working application-- if the usb hard drive for those 70gigs could have been recognized through the dock. Anyway -- also, some more intensive work like the occasional flyer or poster I design for friends.
By the way, have anyone tried to get Wine working on the chroot ubuntu? Maybe with kernel overclocked to 1.8 it might work?

Is it possible to run Ubuntu offline, like without VNC, or do you need internet to use it? I followed the instructions on the app and connected with vnc. I would rather use splashtop and connect to my desktop if ubuntu cant be run offline.

I'm confused as to what you're asking. Technically, Ubuntu is running offline. You're only connecting to the GUI over VNC. You do not need internet.

Ah, I see. But what use has ubuntu without the GUI? I'm obviously new to this, but I assumed that you could use the ubuntu OS offline. Like open and use programs like open office. How would you be using ubuntu if you were at a place without internet?
I am looking forward to getting my hands on wp8 most likely a lumia 920. My question is does anyone know of remote desktop software? I was really dissapointed that wp7 did not have one that was as easy as teamviewer. I have emailed teamviewer with the usual reply " if something is developed we will let you know." I have tried all the remote apps onn my wp7 to log into my work pc and no success. I have to resort to teamviewer on my laptop or my tablet. Does anyone know any inside knowledge or is it due to fact that I had a wp7 rom on my hd2 that prevented the remote control apps to work?

I have tried pc remote but my works ip address is hidden. I need something that works like teamview where you just log in and connect. I may try pc remote again and see what i can tinker with
I'm looking for something as well. The RDP metro app on Windows RT is really neat, I don't know why they just don't have it on windows phone 8. The thing that is killing me is the lack of VPN. Even Windows RT has built-in VPN and it works great.

is there an equivalent app for ANDROID that i can install on my HDX8.9 that would effectively allow me to run a stock rom 'inside' the virtual machine?
...and obviously get full play access ....or there would be little point.
obivously there would most likely be performance issues etc. and you are running and O/S within an O/S which some may find confusing or cumbersome.

Safestrap I believe. 13.3.1 or 14. You have your original OS and then allow you to create another Android OS(kinda).

There is a way to mount linux in a rooted device- without actually installing it. Oracle might have worked around that- but the problem with a virtual machine is they are not actually installed. Something as easy to run as android could work- but seriously, that could work.

Your only option is an emulator, since windows runs on x86 and kindle has arm. Snapdragon 800 might be powerfull enough to emulate a windows xp, but be prepaired for serious perfomance issues. You should use the oldest version of windows that your software runs on. But for native android apps use 1mobile market.
Thanks all for the responses....just to clarify, what I was trying to ask is is there an app for android like the Virtual PC app on Windows that runs Android.....so I would be running a sandboxed android on android lol, kinda hoping for an alternative solution to the current root crisis....I.e. I have no root and its really frustrating that the awesome hardware in my HDX is crippled by not being able to access the play store....never mind the fact I can't load additional keyboards or wallpapers etc.

No there is no application that allow that which I am aware of. But this almost what safestrap does.

So was reading about Microsoft making a win10 custom ROM for android devices. Any chance we'll see it for our g3's? I'd love to give it a try.
The only thing I read was that MS was making it possible for Windows 10 to run Android Apps. Nothing about actually running Windows 10 Mobile on an Android device. That's news to me.
As it is, I despise Windows 8. It's horrid on a PC. Why would I want to use my PC like a mobile device? Absolutely the WORST decision Microsoft has ever made in the history of Windows (well, other than Bob). In the same vein, I hate the Windows Mobile interface as well. Just do not like it, so even if this is to be possible, no way would I do it. LOL!

I read it on CNET. I only use desktop view on my win8 PC. I haven't tried windows phones. I know the old ones sucked ass back when it was just windows mobile. My brother in law is in school for game Dev and he's super excited for win10. It's supposed to be the greatest leap for windows ever, or some sh**. Runs 1/3 lighter than win8.

Ah, okay.
I remember that's what some people said about Windows 8. LOL! It still sucks regardless. We have Windows 2K12 servers here at work and when I have to log into one of those to administer web sites, I absolutely loath the interface. Start button my butt! It STILL pops me to that stupid main screen of tiles. If I want to find something not there, then I have move my mouse over to the search button way in the upper right-hand corner of the screen (of course, after clicking on the "Start" button to leave the desktop) and find it that way. I've pinned so many things to the task bar, it's uncanny. Worse design decision EVER by Microsoft.

Yeah. I tried that and is does make it so much better, but it still just irks me how Microsoft decided to make a decision for me on how the ui should function and behave. Kind of like that fruit company. Lol. But 31st least, Microsoft didn't stop us from being able to use classic shell. Lol

To be fair I can understand doing this in the test builds since Microsoft is wanting feedback on their own start menu. But they have done it at this point what's to say they won't try to do this come prime time for Windows 10?
Its amazing to still see people struggling with windows 8.1/2012 r2. Functions just like any other windows to me. I press the start key, type the program I want, and it opens. Just like windows 7. Plus I can set it to boot to the desktop instead of the full screen start menu anyways. I bet most people don't even take the time organize tiles into named groups to make it look nice.

Microsoft is actually testing a custom Windows 10 flashable ROM on I believe some Xiaomi phones. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised by "new" Microsoft if they open sourced this Windows 10 android mutant ROM.
They have already said that an open source version of Windows is definitely a possibility. Plus they are now supporting the Raspberry Pi 2 with a free Windows 10 build.
If there is one way that Microsoft could push me to a Windows 10 phone, it would have to be with Continuum. If I can have a phone with an x86 CPU, and be able to just connect it to a monitor and it becomes a fully blown PC! Then they have just made a customer out of me.
Windows 10 is great, but it's never going to run on the LG because no one is going to write the device specific drivers needed to make it work, which is also why ASOP/ CM ROMs never work very well .
People that hate Windows 8 don't have touch screens and Classic Shell installed.
From the beginning when asked about Windows 8, I've said, "only if you have a touch screen, otherwise you'll hate it".
I am looking forward to Windows 10.

I understand how it works, but it's still a major shock. I'm used to NOT having to switch from desktop mode to the tile mode and then have to search for my app. It's more clicks/operations:
1. Hit window key or start button to switch to start screen
2. Scan the tiles or move my mouse to the search button and click it.
3. Type in the app to find and run
Old way:
1. Hit the window key or start button.
2. Type in the search button and my app shows up and run it.
Again, this works great for mobile devices, but the desktop, it's hideous. And this is nothing new. Ubuntu did this years ago and it also was horrid and people despised it. To this day, on Ubuntu, I will not run that interface. I replace it with either the KDE desktop or something else.
The overall movement of the interface is just awkward on a PC. It makes no sense at all.

You're already doing more work then you need to in Windows 8 to search for things. There's no need to ever move your mouse or click the search icon. Just press the windows key and start typing your program name. It starts searching automatically as soon as you start typing. Its the same function as in windows 7. The only difference is that the start menu is full screen with pin-able tiles for most used programs. In terms of how many clicks it takes to navigate to a program, its substantially less in 8 than in 7.
I've never really considered the windows 8 tile menu to be much of a "tablet mode" though. Just a fancy start menu. In windows 10 however, it goes a bit deeper to make the OS more touch friendly when it detects you are on a tablet. Its been great on my Surface Pro 3. Automatically puts it into tablet mode when I disconnect my type cover.
I am a fan of Windows 8.1 (not so much 8), but it did have issue that I think Microsoft has dealt with beautifully in Windows 10.
Ya'll are both making it harder than it needs to be, simply find the shortcut exe's you use frequently and put a shortcut on your desktop for them. Then, set the pc to auto boot to desktop. Then, the number of times you'll have to deal with the (admittedly hideous) metro start screen will be minimal

Or install Classic Shell which brings back the classic start menu and lets you bypass the Metro UI.
... or stick with Windows 7 like I am.

And this is where I stay as well. Sorry, that Metro interface is horrid, period. Switching from desktop to the start screen is jarring to say the least. I just have NOT been able to get used to it. My PC does not have a touch screen, so it's even worse. My daughter has a notebook that has a touch screen, so it's fine there, but the UI is made for a touch screen and not every PC has one.
Yes, you can install Classic Shell, but again, why should I have to? Microsoft should have given us the option to have either one.

To be fair I use Classic Shell on Windows 7 since I prefer the Windows XP Start Menu setup and I can customize things around such themeing and removing stuff that I don't use.

I can see them putting out a flashable Windows ROM to certain devices, but no way it will be open source. They may well call it something like "Source Open Visual Basic" and make you use some proprietary IDE that only runs on Windows to manipulate themes or apps settings, but Microsoft will never open source any of their core products. Licensing and filesystems require separation of the two OS's. The only way they can get in on the Android action is to create some compatibility layer or emulator to run Android apps on their OS or build apps for distribution to Android users.
