SD card formatting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I bought a 32 gb transcend class 4 memory card.
I formatted it using the option in settings in phone. Now I see only 29.7 gb of storage available. Is this normal? Bcz I believe I saw a larger value before formatting. Maybe I am wrong.
Also when I connected the phone to pc in mass storage mode, the format shows as RAW. Is this how it is supposed to be? I saw in many places about formatting to FAT. Is this needed?
Please advice.
Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't show as RAW. Yes, 32GB before formatting would show 29.71GB.
Reboot your phone as it may not have mounted properly maybe.

[Solved] [Q] Mounting External MicroSD

I may have encountered a hardware problem with my SGS2. Hopefully I'm wrong, and it can be corrected with software. Anyway, I have a 4GB MicroSD inserted into the phone, but it is not recognised at all.
Under "Settings > Storage" the SD card section says unavailable for both "Total space" and "Available space". The options for mounting and formatting the SD card are greyed out.
At first I thought the MicroSD might not be listed there, and instead was /sdcard/external_sd, but when I copied some files to that directory, they were not on the card when I checked on my old phone. I also copied a file from my PC to the card via my old phone, then searched, to no avail, to find it on the Galaxy S II.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Format the card via PC card reader . I just shoved 16GB card in and it works .

I have done that. It works in my Xperia X1i. Should I be using FAT32? That is what the card us formatted as, but maybe I should try ext4 or ntfs?

Fat32 should be fine, check the card for errors on your pc? I've just put my 16gb in and it's working fine...
Do you think it could be a fault with the phone? Maybe a damaged card reader? When the card is accessible, where in the file system is it found? /mnt? I know the internal storage is /mnt/sd card.
EDIT:
Never mind, I borrowed another MicroSD, which worked fine. The problem must be with the formatting of the card. Thanks for the help people.

64Gb MicroSD card not visible over USB

I've just installed a Sandisk 64Gb MicroSD card, and formatted it on the S2. I previously had a 32Gb card. For some reason the new SD card is not visible on a PC when I connect in MTP mode - I can only see the 11Gb internal SD card. I'm running ICS (Resurrection Remix 1.1).
Has anyone else had problems with 64Gb cards?
Check in Applications (settings). There's a seeing there that might need changing. USB debug mode.

Windows 7 only gives the option of exFAT or NTFS (it was formatted as exFAT). I tried formatting it to FAT32 from the DOS prompt but it just hung at 0% complete.
???
Apparently there's a way to use ntfc on gs2 but the guy who mentioned it on XDA ,I can't recall exactly what he said. He's called trev186

Something wrong with your card reader or windows then as FAT 32 is the Windows default tested and formatted a card 30 seconds ago .

Must be a Windows problem. I just plugged the card reader into a Linux machine and was able to format in FAT(32). Both phone and PC can see the card now, but am having problems with the phone stopping responding while copying. Hmmm...

Firstly and most important point....any drive or storage media(external/internal) cannot be formatted to fat 32 filesystem if its capacity or size is more than 32 gigs......there are ways to format it to fat 32 but thats actually not pure fat 32....
Secondly s2 supports cards upto 32 gigs..i don't know how you actually are using it....it might not be giving you the full capacity of 64 gigs...(please confirm that)
So the case here may be that..either your sd card has been formatted to an unknown format by the phone that the pc cannot recognize when connected via phone...
So firstly please try re formatting the sd card with your phone and then plug it into your pc via the card reader...if your pc shows the option that the sd card needs to be formatted then...its true..use a 32 gig sd card or any compatible device...else try formatting it to fat 32 via usb extreme software (well google it)...
Else you cannot use it on s2 with ntfs format...cuz the s2 doesn't support ntfs...

When I formatted the card from the phone I got the "Blank USB Storage" notification immediately after the format was complete. If I then tried to copy anything to it using ES File Explorer (a file from the internal SD card for example) I got "copy failed".
I'm now using Windows Explorer to copy files onto the SD card (I was using Directory Opus before on the PC) and so far so good...
Hmm...did you try to use partition wizards to format your sd card via card reader? The partition wizard softwares are available for free if you do a quick google...format into FAT 32...I use EASEUS partition manager...

(HELP) Anyone having issues mounting 64gb sandisk sd card on S III

Hi there guys
I have been having a problem with 3 sandisk 64gb micro sd cards. I always got them replaced but it is getting frustrating now. Obviously they are formatted in exfat format.
The problem starts when I copy data of over 30 gb. Once i copy the data n the sd is remounted or the phone is restarted i always get the message "damaged sd card" but when i read the card on pc through an adapter it shows the contents ok. So i want to know if anyone can help me so that I may not need to return the card this time around...

Try to format it first in the phone, then start loading data on it.

I also tried it buddy but none of the methods seem to work .. i also tried formatting it then copying data through sd card reader as well as the phone itself... does it have to do anything with some file system issue or kernel related issue... im on stock kernel rooted...

also had the same problem. i formatted the card to fat32 with 32xxx sectors with "GUIFORMAT" app for windows, the it works ok.
then after fat conversion, you can try to format the card to exfat using any app (not the windows one) search google, then it might work, didnt try myself as fat32 works great, and i can use it with the script that makes the card the phone memory, so now i got 64gb instead of 11.6gb of phone storage

where formatted?
how much fully card with data?
witch rom, kernel?
I have the class 10 64Gb Sandisk sd card too with no problems.
Card has about 55Gb info on it and I didn't format the card. Just put it into the phone. Recognised instantly and haven't looked back.
I have a 2nd SGSIII too with a 64gb class 6 sandisk sd card. Same applies but with a little less data on it.

What partition is default with sdcards?

If you saw my other post, its similar to this one? My question though is by default, what partition are SD cards set at? I had read thru other website searches, that it was exFAT? If that were the case than my android phone wouldn't recognize a brand new 16gb class 4 sdcard right? Than in which case I would have to format the card to a fat32 format?
If this helps,my ps3 also doesn't recognize the 16gb card but it does recognize the 8gb...I remember formatting the 8gb one to fat32 which by process of elimination makes me assume the 16gb card is on a format incompatible with my android phone/ps3...
Which software would y'all use to partition the entire 16gb card? I can't use my phone as my phone doesn't even recognize the card. As a matter of fact while in recovery it tells me there's an error in mounting

I am attaching a very basic Windows tool to format SD cards to FAT32, simple!
Is it possible that this sdcard came with a different partition that's inconsistent with both android and my ps3...ohh and I haven't ruled out the possibility of having a problem with the sdcard slot. I've had problems with the 8gb one working but its working fine now. They are two different manufacturers with these cards....maybe this 16gb card isn't partitioned with fat32....

64gb SD card ... getting "damaged card" error.

Just bought a new sandisk 64gb card. When I try to mount the SD card I get "damaged card" notification in my status bar. I selected it and it gave the option to format. I did but to no avail. Will this ROM support that size?

I ran into the same problem before. Sadly, the Note does not support 64gb sd cards. The max that you can get is 32gb, unless someone out there can prove me wrong.
Been running a 64GB samsung card in my I717R since release date without issue. I did originally format the card in another phone.
If you need help please use the correct forum. Moved
Is the card formatted to NTFS ?....or FAT32?
also ....is the card an SDXC card ?
Been reading for a bit to attempt helping, and the card should function fine if first formatted to FAT32, but as stated by agoattamer ..cannot be done by the usage device.
Perhaps via card reader and PC ?
Hope it helps a bit ..g

I am using a Rogers branded Note with stock ICS. I purhcased a 64GB Sandisk MicroSD a while back. Out of the box, it would not work, as the card was formatted in exfat. I had to format it to FAT32 first.
Unfortunately windows 7 did not allow this.. I think the card was too big. So I had to google how to, and used a free utility to do it (sorry, I do not recall the name of the app).
Works great now
I did find a fat32 software that works. I only got 59.45gb out of it. I used 32768 for the allocation size.
Would a larger allocation size get me the full 64gb available?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
You won't ever get the full 64GB. It is just how it is. Check your hard drives on your computer and you will find the same result.
