I've got a question here, and I'm hoping someone could help me out. I'm about to get shipped over to South Korea for a year and have an EVO 3D that I just picked up in July. It would be a shame to have my nice new phone become nothing more than a small wifi only tablet, but I am still bringing it overseas with me. If anything I know that when I'm within range of a wifi connection I can still Skype with my wife back home, but being able to use it as a real phone as well would be pretty awesome. So does anyone here know if my phone will work with any carriers over in the ROK? Thanks in advance guys.
I just returned from a trip from Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand. I had a laptop with me but I never used it, I would just use my phones Wi-fi for just about everything.
Going to Korea, you will find Wifi everywhere there and the eveo3d will nice to have if you dont have a tablet. I tried google phone and could not get it to work, I kinda knew it would not but tried for the fun of it. I did not try skype, but if you can use it on wifi here then it should work over there, without problem.
GPS works without problems too, as long as you have a cached copy of the area on the phone.
They use different carriers over there that make it hard to use our phone. I almost got this thing to work in Guam, but after a few days I gave up.
Would be awesome if someone has figured it out though. Keep us posted if you find something!

I think you would need a SIM card to get it to work and Sprint does not use SIM cards.

I have a sprint EVO 3D which i use on Reliance (carrier) in India. I purchased it from ebay . It was officially flashed to reliance from sprint. Look for it on ebay or Ask any service center for that.
Been a long time since I was in the ROK (1989). You probably wouldn't want to use a cell phone to call the states due to the shear costs, especially when you have Skype at no cost and has video. Or other tools like facebook, instant messenger, etc. Back in the day only had a land line that was super expense to call back to the states.
You might see if you can find yourself strictly an SMS device to keep in touch back home - of course you have to keep track of the time difference too.
Have you contacted your sponser and asked them what facilities are available. Depends where you ultimately end up too.
Well, ill have my phone over there anyways so ill ask sprint about it and also look into it when I get there. I was thinking it would be useful for cabs, coworkers, and friends while over there. Lookin forward to my time over there, though. Maybe ill be able snag some galaxy 3s or something along those lines right before coming back.

I haven't been there since 2000 but most places over there use sim card get your self a cheap phone to use or buy a gsm EVO 3d and you would be good to go
I've made several trips to the ROK in the past few months... I recommend getting a local cell for your day to day calling and use your 3d to Skype via wifi.
I was able to get a signal but didn't want the crazy chargers spirit would add so I used my 3d w/ wifi Skype thing...
As far as having wifi all over, many of the military bases had it in the food courts... I'm not sure about the local areas...
our govt BB's worked for calls but data was, well, so slow not worth it..
Good luck and enjoy your time there. If you get the chance, have your family visit, definitely a unique experience!
Oh and eat at the maple leaf bbq outside of yongsong, the dhl will have directions... Amazing!

So, Thursday started a terrible issue with my 3VO. My 3G speeds have been maxing at 40kbs. On Saturday, I couldn't get over 9kps. I've called Sprint and they had me reset all of the settings, but it didn't help. I purchased an app that looks at apps internet usage and can't find an app that is maxing anything out. I'm not having any issues with Wifi. There isn't any 4G in my area to test.
Is anyone else having this issue? If so, are there any fixes?
Thank you in advance for any help.
LD
What rom are you on?
Did you ask Sprint how their network is there? Tech guy I talked to gave me the info on this area, retention canceled my contract. No ETF for me get to keep the phones.
Yes I too have this issue. Best suggestion is to keep calling Sprint and get everyone you know having similar issues to call in as well so they do something about it.
The infrastructure has become heavily saturated in the past 6 months. A lot of people are having similar issues with this across the country. I get 10-20 kbps, and Sprint told me that's acceptable and nothing is guaranteed, which is true, but they should still maintain some level of service if they expect us to pay hundreds per month.
My 3G is unusable. If I am not on 4G or WiFi I pretty much can't use the internet. Sucks -_-
Did you temp root prior to running the full root program? If so did you delete all of the temp root stuff before full root?
I had the same issue. I believe it had something to do with the root process. If 3g is unusable you should be able to get a warranty replacement from Sprint. That's what I ended up having to do...
I don't know what to say because its the exact opposite for me which is weird because with my OG EVO I would have terrible speeds but with my 3D I seem to top 1Mbps every speed test.

My 3g speeds have been horrible too. I get like 20-50kps downtown by my work when I used to get like 300-600. But, by my house I get 300-600 because I'm close to a tower.
I really feel like it started after I rooted, and I never did the temp root.

Yes. The guy I spoke with checked it out. He said that there were several outages last week, but all of them should be fixed.

They gave me a ticket to return the phone to the store, but warned me that the store may replace it with a refurb.
As for your issue, this guy told me that the poor speed was unacceptable and they would do their best to get it fixed. He also put in tickets to have the network examined. I wouldn't take that from them, so you shouldn't either. I've been with Sprint for 7 years and have had my ups-and-downs. Yet, they have been really good lately. Hell, if you want, I will even call them with you. That is just not right!

I haven't rooted because I have been having so many issues with the phone. Once I get it replaced with a good one -- is there a good one? -- then I will root. I've been looking at some of the benchmark scores from some of these ROMs being in the 4000+ range and am drooling. MAJOR DROOLING!

Well, let's keep this thread going and see if we can get some of these issues figured out. Hopefully, we will be able to figure them out.
Oh, one of my biggest issues with the phone is that I sound like I am talking through a tin can to the caller on the other side. Is anyone else having this issue?

I tried to get tickets put in but they kept telling me that the previous ticket is closed (when I had no service, no calls, text and 3g). I tried pleading with several supervisors and the "upper escalation supervisor" said "sorry, speeds are not guaranteed".
I told the guy that at that speed, even if I used it 24/7 for a month straight, I won't hit 2 GB, so why do they advertise unlimited 3G, and he was like "well I'll look into it". I got no response. I've been on the phone with them for the past 3 days, and they just keep telling me, "we're working on it". One person says there are no outages, another says there is. I ask for supervisors, and they just magically "cut off" and I'm not even rude with them. I don't like getting loud and rude over the phone (I have to use an iPhone to call them because how bad service is around here to begin with)

You're not going to get anywhere over the phone. Go in to a Sprint store and talk to someone face to face. The guy I talked to had the OG EVO. I had him set the phones side by side and load the same video from youtube. His og loaded right up while my 3d wouldn't load at all. Also did the same thing downloading an app from the market. OG blew 3D away. I pointed out mine had a dual core processor and he couldn't deny there was a problem with the 3D.... Warranty replacement baby. When it came in we tried the same test and my new 3D loaded up before his og... Not by much, but the difference was obvious.
Well, while I was posting earlier, I was on the phone with Sprint. I was just trying to get an update on the ticket they put into the network people. The CSR kept telling me that he couldn't find a ticket from earlier and that he would put on in. I hung up shortly after.
About an hour later, my data rates went from 10kbs to 800kbs down. So, I am thinking that there was something wrong on the Sprint side of things. Now, I am going to wait a few days and see if they stay where they are. If they stay, and there is a fix for the call quality issue, I am rooting it.
This also means that your issue could be on their side also. I agree with the above poster too. Get into the store and talk to them. You shouldn't give in to what they're telling you either. You pay an additional $10 for premium 3G and 4G. Not for 1x speeds.

Well the problem with mine is with all 5 lines, which are the: LG Optimus, EVO 3D, two EVO 4Gs and an EVO Shift. All have the same issues. I too had the EVO4G when the issues started 2 months ago. I brought it into the store back then, and they just kept replacing it. I got I think 3 replacements. I finally gave in an bought the EVO 3D instead. Same issue. It seems for me at least, its the just the general coverage area, and not because of the phone. The only thing this phone does more is drop calls and aside from the network issues, has to do with the placement of the antenna.
Other than that, the 3G speeds are the same on all 5 phones. 10-20, and maybe 50-70 (kbps, not kb, like 56kbps dialup) past midnight.
EDIT: BTW this occurs with everyone's phone around my area, but they're too lazy to call in. Only one of my friends (who is in the zip code over) is also calling in and getting nowhere as well.
UPDATE: So I got through to a supervisor in retentions, he finally said they can't do anything about it. His first offer was a $10 credit, and I'm like seriously? We argued back and forth and after 2 hours he says "Ok fine, your contract ends today for line XXXX and we will waive your ETF, please return your phone to where you purchased it".
So I ask him what about the other lines and he says no only this line. At that point I just gave up because I don't think he got the point that all phones are experiencing the same thing. I mean I'm not gonna switch with just one line and keep the other 4 on Sprint, especially if they all suffer the same dial up speeds. That will be a ****load of money. Then I got another speech about how service is not guaranteed and a bunch of BS, and I told him "Alright good night" and hung up.
Anybody got a current number to the Executive Department? Last number I found rerouted me to retentions. I don't think they'll be fixing anything anytime soon. He even admit two towers are down in my area and then later said it's probably my phones. If they let all of us out, I'm gone.
Sorry for the threadjack OP.
Hey guys, long time xda/android user here, and I am currently still on my folks family plan with at&t with a captivate (rooted/rom of course). I was thinking of branching off and going with a carrier that still offers unlimited data, or bumping up to 2 gigs with att ($25). I want to watch movies, play pandora, all that, without having to get on wifi, and without worry of going over my limit. What do you guys think? Are you able to watch netflix on 3g without a lot of buffering with sprint? How are your own 4g/3g speeds? How do you like sprint in general? I am in texas and will be around midland, dallas, and houston. I ask in this forum because I am interested in the photon, and the data heavy people are definitely in here.

As long as you are in a good sprint service area you shouldn't have any issues. I would try sprint out by starting up a new contract and if you like it then port your number over from att.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
And does anyone know if I signed up for a contract, if I didn't like the service, could I terminate without a fee within a certain date?
I don't know about Texas, but I'm up in northeast Wisconsin, in a small town, and while there's no 4G until you hit Chicago, the 3G is surprisingly strong up here, as long as you don't get too rural.
As for the canceling with no fee, you have 30 days on Sprint. See www DAWT sprint DAWT com/landings/returns/
About the Photon, since you mentioned that you are rooted with your Captivate, I'd assume you'll be doing the same thing with the Photon. Rooting is easy enough, but unlocking the bootloader took me the better part of yesterday, and I've been doing this stuff (flashing ROMs and such) since the day I got my original Evo 4G, sometime in August of 2010.
Although the unlock proved difficult and time consuming, a good chunk of that time was waiting for all the requisite files to download over the Photon's 3G connection.
Other random thoughts: I really like the Photon, this thing absolutely flies. This implementation of MotoBlur isn't too bad, either, although I prefer AOSP-based Android any day of the week. (Here's hoping for CyanogenMod one day soon.) Oh, and the 3G radio in this thing is way better than the one in my old Evo 4G. I get much better data speeds, to the point where it's noticeable in everyday use.
I hope this helps, and welcome to Sprint! Unlimited data is awesome.
To me, the best part of Sprint is the Google Voice integration. Which, by the way, not only means advanced voicemail, but also dirt cheap international calls and really convenient texts. With Google Voice enabled, I can send a text with my number from virtually everywhere: web, Google Chrome widget (sooo useful), iPad, oh you name it, and then have history of the texts stored neatly on the web.
If you're worrying about coverage, know that the $69/mo (+ $10/mo) plan covers 450 roaming minutes with Verizon. Pretty much covers all sorts of emergency "NOOO SIGNALLL OMGGGG" situations.
wow, thanks guys for the replies. I think I will try Att's 2 gig plan for a month, then consider switching if I get close to the cap. Yeah, I'm hoping that unlocking the bootloader and such will become easier once more people jump on board to the dev scene, and people have more time to play with it. I watched a couple of video reviews that talked about the radio and consistently getting more bars than the evo in many areas, and the headset is pretty loud, both of which are more important to me than 3d. Didn't know about the roaming minutes, that is great information as well.
If anyone has anything else to share, please do, I'll keep you guys posted with what I do in the future, thanks!
Im in fort worth and switched from T-Mobile I am enjoying the unlimited data and yes I stream netflix on 3g at work all the time and it's a crappy area so sprint has surprised me big time.

Where is this number of minutes specified in the TOS ?
technically, as long as you stay under 50% of your total voice minutes while roaming, they wont complain much... And if you bounce off that barrier, they will usually call u first and tell u to knock it off..
My wife and I purposely used over 10gigs of roaming data each 2 months I a row and didn't even get talked to
YMMV

there is no finite number of minutes allocated to roaming before their panties get bunched up. The way the ToS reads (paraphrased) it's 'the majority of' or greater than 50% I believe..
if you use 3k minutes and 1k are roaming minutes, they aren't going to care.
I'm going away for 4 month backpacking and I'm not going to take the SG2 with me, so should I sell it or keep it until I come back?
By the time I come back my contract would be almost over, so I can get a good deal on a phone if I resign my contract.
Do you think in 4 month from now they'll be phones better than the SG2?
I already have 3 buyers willing to buy it off me, but I'm reconsidering selling it because I love it.
What would you do?
I would keep it and load it with maps of the area I was traveling in.if there is no power where your going I would get a solar charger and extended battery and use the sgs2 to log my trip with the gps.use it as a camera and take video with it.then use the wifi on the phone to check my email where I go.
Sure you can sell it.
But if you love it.use it.
There will always very better phones next week than the one you bought last week.
But the phone you love today that you sell is the phone you miss.
Nuts
Depends on how much money you lose by selling it. If it's only a little I'd do what you say and get a new phone when come back, but if you lose a lot then keep it.

That's deep, lol.
I'm going to Africa, Thailand, Europe, and the Middle East.
The only reason I didn't want to take it, it's because I'm always so paranoid in scratching or loosing this phone, I kind want be worry free when I travel lool.
But that's a good idea to load it with useful apps, but the roaming chargers for data will be $10 per MB, and I don't think i'll find much Wifi spots where I'm going, the phone will be crippled most of the time.
But I'm thinking of getting this when I come back:

Well I'm selling it for $500 (Canadian) and I got for $669 plus tax= 740
so I'm loosing $240, plus when I resign my contract and get a new phone, I'll probably spend $150 on a new phone with a 3 year contract.
So that way I would be loosing $390 plus I'm locked in a contract for three years.
Dam, after doing the math it's kind of stupid to sell it.
I already did factory reset, I hate myself sometimes.

If you do take it with you, consider buying pay-as-you-go sim cards in the countries you visit. It'll really bring down the cost of actually using the phone.
The latest version of google maps lets you download/cache the map so you can use it offline

Yes, I agree. In Thailand, they even give free sim cards at the airport. Well, at least they did in Koh Samui when I went there earlier this year.
Thank you everybody, I decided to keep it.
but I'm surprised of how many people were willling to buy it.
I opened my email this morning, and there was like 8 emails from people who want it, maybe I should of increased the price a bit .

I believe they all have off line mapping. And special maps can be had or made for locas.
While wifi can not be found every where it can be found in the most unusual places now.
telus had special rates and plans for foreign countries. And I could be wrong but you may be able to put your cell plan on "hold"while riot are out of the country for a long time. You may be able to avoid the costly contract cancel costs. Maybe. And have your phone when you come back.
And if its time to renew get the new phone then too.and sell under one you don't like.
(it is a sweet phone.I think it is the one rogers has now)

EDIT ~ Fixed damned autocorrect words
Just got off the phone with Sprint, and they said I won't be able to make a phone call, receive phone calls, or even text messages until October 14th because they are in the process of upgrading their towers to the new LTE network in the Fort Worth area. It's weird to own a phone that I can't use for the most basic features. GO Sprint GO.
P.S. Any recommendations on how to make a phone call or text over data so I can still make calls/text?

Seems to me you were fed a line. Call back and see if the answer changes. If it doesn't, your are entitled to a credit. No questions asked.

Sounds fishy... It's hard to believe that a carrier would just deny services and continue to charge for them. I assume this would mean no service for anyone in the ft worth area since you're not the only one who uses those towers. I don't think Sprint would risk the class action lawsuit.

No arguments there. I'll probably call back in a few days to see if they have anything better for me. Right now I'm sick and lost my voice, so I just don't want to deal with it. But once I get my voice back, I'll see if I can't get anything better out of them. Especially since I'm still paying for when I can't even use my phone which is kind of stupid.

Why would you call back in a few days? I would all over them about this if it were me and I wouldn't let up until I had a real explanation. Tell them to fix your **** or let you out of your contract (as not providing service to you while I assume you are in good standing and not violation the TOS on their part)
However, there are at least 3 sides to every situation what you say, what sprint says, and what really going on. Not calling you a liar it just seems like there is more to the story.
That's my 2 cents.

Sounds like a load of BS to me. I haven't had a problem with service around the area... I haven't actually been into "Fort Worth" in a few days, but I live pretty damn close. There is no way they could just shut off all services like that for almost two months. That rep must have been new or lied or something, because that doesn't even SOUND reasonable.
lol if they couldnt provide me service until Oct. 14th i would have just said i want to cancel without a fee immediately because i do business with my phone. and they can't really do squat because i pay for a service and they don't even let me do the most basic of functions.
OP needs to call back and get clarification. Only thing I have found:
https://www.sprint.net/maint_view.php
I might try to call again tonight once I get off of work. But again I'm not entirely sure what to say. Plus right now, I've lost my voice, so I can barely talk, as a result, I can't even show anger in my voice, so getting made isn't much of an option. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do yet.
I'm like on day 5 of this **** it reallllly sucks. I live in Irving an have been having everything except the "can't make calls". Sprint needs to give a free month or something better.

Same here. Today is day 5 for me as well. But according to Sprint, I still have a lot of days left in front of me since the tower won't be back on until October 14th.

You should see if you can get an Airrave which makes your phone work over wifi... that really sucks tho. That only works at home tho...maybe they can send you a 2nd one for work.

I just got off the phone with the a Sprint manager last night, who then connected me to her EVO specialist. She was also unable to solve the problem, so she told me that she will get the towers in the area looked at and try to determine what is going on in the area and give me a call back within 72 hours. That said, they said they were going to do this once before 5 days ago now, but I still haven't got a call back from then. However, one good thing that I got out of it all is that they are crediting my account for the past 6 days and how ever many days more it takes to get my phone back on the network. So at the very least, now I'm not paying for phone service that I'm not getting, so that makes me happy. I'm sure they will figure something soon with the towers if not maybe they can give me Airrave so I can at least make phone calls while I'm at home which would make things more liveable. I'll keep everyone posted on what they discover and what they decide to do.
In addition, my location is the TCU campus in Fort Worth. I live close by and go to school there. In both areas I get no cell service. But once I drive about 5 miles away I have no problems. Let me know if anyone else in the area is experience the problems on XDA. The sprint store nearby between Berry and Hulen St. said they have had a few customers coming the past few days with the same problem, but I was curious if anyone on here was also experiencing my pain.

No problems here in the Arlington/Mansfield/Kennedale area so far... I guess if that changes I will be reporting on here and raising hell with Sprint as well.

If that is the case it is either a provisioning error, phone isn't set to cdma only or bad phone.

I don't think you have the same problem that I do, because if I leave my area my phone works, fine. I'm only having trouble when I'm at TCU or at my house which is right next to TCU. But who knows, maybe they are related.
P.S. I've already changed my phone to CDMA only to see if it would help but got no change. Plus I've already taken it into the Sprint store, and they said everything was fine with the phone and factory reset it and everything, but saw no problems because their building is outside of my tower radius, as a result the phone worked perfectly there.
Every once in a while I go out hiking or to the lake or some dangerous (for my phone) place with friends or family. I haven't gone anywhere yet since I've had my LTE but one trip is coming up soon. Here's the thing though, I don't feel comfortable taking my LTE in case something happens to it but I still have my 3D and would like to take that one instead.
Here's the question:
Can I easily switch between the LTE and 3D using Sprints online "Activate a new phone" feature? Also is there a monthly limit to how many times I can swap devices?
I know it wasn't a problem before (with CDMA devices) I just don't know if LTE devices are activated in a different way and if it would cause problems when switching the activation. I'd rather not call every time because it's more convenient to switch it online.
I would normally try this out but since I haven't had my 3D activated on this account I'd get an activation fee and I don't want that until I know for sure I can use it back and forth. Normally I'd ask a rep but the chat is offline atm and I hate waiting on the phone for one.

Well speaking from one who knows...I have done the switching thing too numerous times to count! I always get the upgrades for whatever plan member is up for an upgrade and I keep the new phone and pass down the old one (since I pay the upgrade). Plus, I always have somebody on the plan that has a broken phone and need to switch to backup and then back (there are two accounts and 7 family members).
You will only get the activation fee when opening a new line of service with a new phone or buying a new phone as an upgrade. Switching between phones that you already own has never charged me a dime. And there is no difference in terms of your purposes (4g vs. LTE) in switching those two phones.
Good Luck

Awesome thanks for the reply at least now I know that I can switch as many times as I want and there will be no activation fee.
The only thing they worries me is that this got brought up once before but we never got an answer as to the whole LTE/Wimax thing. I just remember reading somewhere that they were two different "plans" and swapping lte/Wimax devices wasn't adviced.

Switching from my old Wimax shift, there wasn't any plan change. I couldn't activate it online and I did have to call, but was told that was only because lte/wimax looked different in their system and they had to manually switch it over.
You shouldn't have a problem other than maybe having to give Sprint a call ^^
