The stock player, Doubletwist and Winamp are all useless since there is no option to select which folder your music is in. Nothing shows up and you're stuck with that.
Poweramp is fantastic but it's not free.
Disappointed it's this difficult to find a decent music player.
PlayerPro is pretty good imo and has folder view and options. I bought it after using the 7 day trial version.

Just downloaded it and it's as bad as the first three I mentioned. Nothing shows up and there aren't any options. "Resume music" and "customer improvement mode" are the only two options in the settings.

You have never purchased a PC or Mac with preinstalled OS?
PowerAmp is still the best player I have found, well worth the very nominal fee. I took the stance at first on android that I also would not pay if there was a free alternative available, however after weighing the nominal price of the software on android and the benefits of some of the paid apps over their free alternatives I changed that. There is just no replacing some of the top quality paid apps which poweramp is one of.
Power Amp is IMO the best player in android.

Yup, guess I should say I've never directly paid for any software.
You're right, so far Poweramp is by FAR the best player around, actually, it's really the only player I found that can even play music.

What, you don't think developers deserve to be paid for great software?
PowerAmp is streets ahead of all other music players available. 100% worth the money. It supports basically all media types, looks great and I simply cannot go to a player that does not have the equalizer settings that PowerAmp has.

I know it hasn't been updated in a while, but I'm a really big fan of UberMusic. It's a ZuneHD/WP7 clone and is an all around fantastic music player.
The quality of Android music players' UI is atrocious. It's like every developer downloaded Winamp in 1999 and has never used anything since.
power amp is beyond worth the five bucks it costs. Its not gonna break the bank to get it.
The streets ahead reference was so streets ahead!
I really love the look and feel of the stock google music player that is built in, very nice. But there are 0 options... That kinda sucks.
I'd love to see something like ICS music player +. With just additional options.

I do not know if any of you know how good the Zune HD's sound quality is, but I was wondering if it is possible to get the same kind of quality on our 3D. I know the quality depends on the DAC and circuity from what Ive read, but our phone's hardware is more recent and therefore I assume it has to have better parts than the Zune's. Would it be possible to create an app or a background service that can give the same quality?
Unfortunately htc probably didn't spend the money on the audio hardware. Poweramp, volune+, dsp manager, and beats mods improve sound (depending who you ask). There are other apps but nothing that revolutionary.

You have two choices to get the best sound possible on your 3D:
1. Buy Poweramp
2. Install "Android Revolution HD" ROM and flash Beats on it.
As someone who owns a Zune HD, I understand exactly what you are talking about. It's audio quality is simply unmatched. I still carry mine around, it's small enough that it fits in that little "sub-pocket" that most jeans tend to have on the right pocket.

Couldn't we create something to imitate the same sound as that of the Zune, if Volume + can emulate Beats audio why couldn't we create something similar. Plus I think if can get Chad's kernel with the improved sound drivers I am sure it can surpass that quality and make it audiophile acceptable.

I think Ive done that in the past, I had Poweramp with beats enabled and Chad's kernel on top of that with the better drivers. It sounded great, even the htc's music app sounded better than with just stock Beats. However, Im still fiending for that Zune quality! When I had my Zune HD music was great and I could listen to it all day without any discomfort, even in loud places with cheap headphones. With Beats its cool too, but sometimes its better when you are in a quiet place.

It's not about the look of the app. It's the sound quality. The hardware inside the Zune HD gave it a truly wonderful sound (way better than all the iPods and the other MP3 players of the time) and the OP is looking for a way to fix that.
I still think we can fix this some way or another. I am not a developer but I am willing to learn to develop a service or app or maybe even just port the way the zune hd handles audio. Or someone else can do it who has the experience. I am thinking we could probably hack and tweak our audio chips just like we can overclock our cpus, couldn't we overclock it the same way? Moreover, I found out that the 2009 Ipod touch used a similar chip as the zune hd's. Yet, audio sounded different because maybe there is a software aspect that helps also. Also, the zune had a tegra processor plus a dedicated audio core, although I do not know if this is the same as Wolfson's.
Wikipedia has some specs if this can help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zunehd
Here is the audio chip the zune used according to Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/microsofts-zune-hd-already-cracked-open-and-photographed/2
http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/power_management/WM8352/
and this website has more information if anybody is interested:
http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeehouse/Audio-DAC-chips-does-anyone-care-anymore
Couldn't we also replace our audio chips with this one:
http://www.cirrus.com/en/products/cs4970xx_family.html
Does anybody know if the decoder, or whatever makes music sound good on the Zune HD, can be ported to our phones? Or be used to create a service like Beats or dsp manager to run in the background?

Yes and no. From what I understand, the quality starts at the sound file. If the sound or song is bad it will sound bad on cheap headphones and maybe even in expensive headphones, too. The next step would be probably the chosen media player, which will send the audio signals it gets from reading the sound file to the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) to be "decoded" and played out through the jack by the headphones.
I do not know if this is 100 percent correct, but this is the way it seems. Correct me if I am wrong.

The design of this thing is awesome. Pair it with those monster 14 pound EACH speakers and man, that's drool worthy.
However, this device is kinda confusing to me. Is it a dumbed down receiver? Is it a dumbed down Google TV device? I can play vids from YouTube and and Google Play and music and that's it?
Where are the shots of what ever interface this will have? Where is Netflix? Huluu Plus? Amazon Prime? This seems to be the most limited - as far as what can be done with it from the get-go - device I have seen El Goog push out in a long while. Sad.
As good as it looks, it seems rushed to me. Why pay $299 for something that is simply novelty and available in many different flavors already?
Till they add a bit to it, or someone hacks it and makes it much better. Sorry Goog, I pass.
While they were doing the presentation, I understood it as it was just a receiver that connects to some speakers or a tv, so once you connect to it (I forget if it was WIFI or NFC) you can just play music or videos on the speakers or tv; and anybody that connects to it is able to play what they want on it.
It looks great and all but for $300 its definitely not worth the price tag.
This is on the network so I hope that it has easy access to Windows shares and that it will be able to play 1080p MKVs with lossless audio.
I haven't played around with playback on devices.
Even though it is pricey if it has this full feature set then I may pick this up. Would be a nice improvement over plugging in a laptop to the TV.

It's $300 because it's supposedly actually manufactured in America... so do with that what you will
I'm still very confused as to what it is/how it works. Doesn't seem worthwhile.
seems like the coolest looking piece of crap.
The engadget preview says much of the price is because of the built in amp, which, IMHO is totally unnecessary. I have a surround sound system.. why would I want stereo sound from that puny little thing?
Drop the amp and $100 off the pricetag and this thing will sell itself. Oh, and unlock the damn thing. Only plays stuff from the play store? Google is starting to sound like apple...

Really? It has a USB port explicitly for the purpose of hacking it. I have no doubt the Nexus Q will be a cool device to own once there's enough dev support for it.
It seems like Google released the Nexus Q with the idea that the android community would figure out what to do with it.
Nexus q + dev support = sold. However I will wait for the support first instead of buying and hoping....
Its an interesting device, but I'm disappointed that they at least didn't add an "airplay" style connection for displaying your phone or tablet screen on the tv via wifi. That would at least make it more appealing for the price
I sat there during the keynote thinking what a killer feature this would have been for a google tv. Instead it's a more expensive and more limited device.
I came away from i/o feeling like the google tv is being de-prioritized and they want to push this device instead because it's locked down to google play content. There were zero mentions of google tv during either of the keynotes. There were sessions but after sitting through a few it seemed as if all the new and exciting things were happening in other product lines. I don't mean this as a dig at the google tv devs. I just think the company has made a cooporate decision to lock this down.
Maybe I'll feel a little different after unboxing it tonight and playing with it some but I just can't see myself getting on board this product line and I'm a google fanboy. It just feels like a limitations by design concept.

That's cool. But inconsistent. Not everyone is tech savvy enough to even flash anything and I would be more apt to group those individuals with ones who would use the banana plugs on the back. It doesn't take an audiophile to desire more than 2 channels of sound.
I think its a brilliant device and ill probably get one once the price goes down. I just think it may increase sales to offer one without the amp - is it really that big of a selling point?

Agreed. This isn't like our Android phones running custom ROMs. You buy an Android phone, ANY Android phone, and you can:
1. Make phone calls
2. Send text messages
3. Use email
4. Browse the web
5. Download, install, and use the full Play Store catalog of apps
All without any hacking at all. When you install a custom rom, you're basically getting a few added features, customization, optimization, maybe the ability to overclock or run a select few apps that need root. You know, little things that aren't necessary but are nice to have.
The Nexus Q is different because it's gimped right out of the box. You basically can't do anything with it, other than play music and videos from the Play Store only (and who even has a huge collection of that stuff?). Even the very first Apple TV was capable of streaming content through a local network, even if it was limited to stuff you added to your iTunes library.
I appreciate Google reaching out to the dev community, but they can't rely on them to do all their work for them. What the Nexus Q should have been was a tiny Android desktop computer, controllable directly with an Android phone using a specific app (something like Gmote) and able to run any and all Android apps. I'm excited when I see thumb-sized Android computers available for under $100. The NQ could have been a cooler, more premium version of that, but as it is, it's both overpriced AND has no features.
YouTube app
So not living in US forces me to use Music and the YouTube app. Now it's time to do some raging.
Playing youtube vids on my tv is awesome through the app and all that. But I want to be able to play several videos. I have several playlists but the only option on a playlist in the youtube app is to delete it. Opening the playlists gives you the possibility to play one (and only one) video in a row. It really sucks. I don't want to open the app every time a video has ended :/
Guys what are you complaining about? Your where given cool toy for free because you are developers. You are suppose to find better applications for it . Just do it. Few years ago you had T-Mobile android phone without anything useful on it , nobody completed

All you guys in here complaining are just not dev or inspiring to be one cause from what I seen you're able to load a launcher to it from adb and stream netflix in 1080 so you guys dont really understand android or google yet but you will.
Sadly, I will buy a multitude of these for a project if someone can get the damn thing rooted and unlocked...

Flacs 24/96 yes.
Maybe someone knows, can be this limited by the DAC or just system.
One song its like 260Mb compare to 320mp3 10Mb.
I can only presume that in Hi Fi world also not many devices do it and they size of few times bigger than phone. At the moment lets say standard is 24/96.
Its not a despair really because sound is still amazing. But going extra step I think we need to wait to get better.

To OP: I do not think the HOX+ has an audio chip half way decent enough to play it to it potential anyway. AFAIK, Poweramp should be able to handle it none the less. If I were you, I would save some space and convert it to a slightly lower quality. You will lose nothing our audio chip already takes from the song.

I'm actually installing a Nexus 7 in the stock navigation location (I have a base model without the navigation but the option bezel is there). I'm going to fabricate my own mounts and install the Nexus 7 overhead for navigation and OBD II monitoring.
I want the single-din radio to handle all of my music. I have an iPhone for music that I kept after I bought my Galaxy S4. The audio quality between iPhone USB and auxiliary is night and day and I don't want to sacrifice audio quality.
