Force apps to use 3g not full H+ - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
not really sure if this is possible. I notice with whatsapp with normal messages that the little 3g icon doesn't kick up to H or H+ unless I'm sending/receiving media files or anything other than just normal messages.
I think this is a good feature (if it is designed to be one) and would like some other apps to only stay on 3g and not kick up to HSPA+. Some of these apps are facebook messenger and twitter where there is no need for full HSPA+.
Is this possible or is it up to the app developer to implement such a feature?
p.s I have fast dormancy disabled and I'm on Telstra network.
2.3.6 based rom and KL1 modem.

No you can't select which apps will use 2G/3G/H+..!
Also its not the app developer who decides that!

Questions regarding Hero

hi all,
just recently bought a hero and sorry for the noob questions. any help will be greatly appreciated.
1.) How do i activate the green notification light for any new notifications? so far i can only use the trackball to flash for a number of minutes and thats it.
2.) how can i permanently use 3g as a signal without switching back to edge? i prefer 3g because it is faster, but when i use the web, it reverts to edge making it slower when browsing. i want it never to switch back to edge just 3g.
3.) How do you update radio and rom? is it the same with winmo? i have a topaz and im currently using hero.
Thanks for any feedback!
So far the only answer i found was the notification light as a bug or a defect. line switching is still unsolved and updating.

1) It works as it is stated in the user's manual. How can you state that it is a bug or defect? Funny... Just because it works that way on Magic or G1 does not mean that it has to be the same on Hero.
2) You cannot as your phone will automatically switch between them when one another is not available. You phone will select 3G only if it is available around where you are. If it switches to Edge/GPRS/whatever, that means you don't have 3G signals around you.
3) There are 1.000 posts on the forum here regarding updating ROM, etc. Search is our best friend.

You can force HSDPA, but you do so at your own risk!
You need to download AnyCut from the Market and create new shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". From this short cut, you access a screen which gives lots of diagnostic info about the phones state and there is an option to "Set preferred network type". By default this is "WCDMA Preferred", but if you want to force to always use HSDPA you should select "WCDMA Only".
Note if you do this, your phone will never drop back to 2G, even if a 2G signal is available and a 3G one isn't.
I wouldn't advise playing around with any of the other options in this screen unless you know what you are doing!

Dave

very interesting. because for my topaz i always set it to wcdma only. willing to give it a try. where can i download it? do i need a gmail account for this? cant find it any website where it can be downloaded.
Android software is downloadable via the Android Market application on your hero - any purchases are made by using a google checkout account which is set up like paypal so you don't need to enter your details all the time...

[Q] App to Turn off 3G/EDGE

Hello Guys,
I made my jump into the world of Android with the SGS2. I love it to the core with the few days I have played with it. I am on the lookout for some good 3G/2G/EDGE turn off apps that let me turn off my data usage since I am on a data limit plan. I know that I can disable data from going into wireless & networks > Mobile Networks> uncheck use packet data. But I am looking for some sort of a widget app on the home screen that turn off/on the data with one click.
I would appreciate if you guys could point me to some good apps that are known to work on SGS2.
Thanks
I'm haven't looked into any Apps that do that, but if you flash to a custom ROM like UnNamed, there is a data toggle button on the drop down menu.

There is a lot of apps that u can download in android market, but it will be useless if right now u'r running default Original ROM.
Apps that you already download from android market will be useless, i recommended that u flash default ROM and use Custom ROM.
Right now i'm running SG2 with Cyanogen and it had option to choose 2G or 3G data.
i hope this information can help you
Thanks.
Thank you guys!!! You guys are just awesome..I will look into flashing some custom ROM's..The more I delve into Android the more I am in love with it.

it has a toggle to switch the data on/off, not 2g to 3g.
Switching from 3g to 2g will save battery correct? I wonder why there isn't a default way to do that like on the iphone.

My mistake, it is just for the data itself.
So far I have tried all unamed, perception, cognition, serendipity and c7... out of which all stock based rom do not allow 3g/2g switch only c7 does... but with c7 you loose some functionality like motion sensing, slide to call in contacts etc..

Toggle 2g on stock rom?

sorry for double post, but i think it rather belongs in here, plz delete thread if not so...
I installed Toggle 2g on cm7 rom, and it worked pretty well, switching to 2g mode after 5/10/30..mins of standby. Great app in my opinion that prolongs the batterylife very good. It uses Injection. Now i got back to stock rom and wanted to ask, if someone could make a version working on stock. There is some instructions on the thread, but i didnt have success, because i dont have a zip of the 0.62 stock rom for CWM, only the ftf file for Flashtool.

Thanks a lot!!!
Nobody else interested in this?
I'm intersted. I think 2g only mode is disabled ion the Three network in the UK so I would like to know how it works and if at all on this network
As far as i know, 2g (for second generation) is just the old standard internet connection, supported everywhere in the world and sucking less energy out of the battery. In a gsm phone 2g is gsm and 3g is umts/hsdpa, donno how it is on a cdma cellphone...
This would save me a ton of battery at work

I tried resigning our phone apks to make the programm work without success.
Anyways im now using superpower again.
Old xda programm, but it works, though its not as smooth as toggle2g because it shuts down connection and afterwards switches to 2g /3g.
I'm using Data on demand which sounds like it does something similar to what you're looking for. Its free on the market and can be set to turn off data with screen off or turn data off as per a set schedule. I've been using it for a few months now

no, data on demand totally switches off data connection, so that you cannot receive emails or chat messages as long as the display is off. toggle 2g just switches the band to a lower signal, so that the speed is lower and the power consumption goes down as well, but the speed is still high enough to receive mails, facebook stuff, twitter, weather... and when you switch your screen back on, you get back the full power of 3g

In that case it sounds like what you've found would be better for me too as as you say, data on demand doesnt allow even mms when screen off

[Q] Converting a ROM to WiFi only

Is there a simple way to convert a normal (2.2) ROM to use WiFi only? After 2+ years with my Vibrant, I finally moved on to A GSIII, but there's still plenty of room in my life for an extra Android device; car media player, running computer, etc. What I don't need for any of that is to be constantly wasting battery trying to connect to the cellular network. I've disabled packet data and set it to only look for 2g networks in the system settings, but I'm wondering if there are some simple tweaks that can permanently disable the telephony? Something in build.prop maybe?
Thanks,
Why not just put it on Airplane mode?
Take out the SIM?
Try this ROM here, sounds like what you want http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24086649
No phone/data, WiFi only.

That's the ROM that made me think it was possible, but I don't love the way it looks. I was a big fan of the Axura ROMS back in the day, and the resurrected version (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787267) is pretty sweet.

Wifi issues please check

Just received my S4 and setup my Wi-Fi on it so I don't blow through my Data.
When I am connected to my Wi-Fi it shows both 4G and Wi-Fi on the top of the phone as if it is using both 4G and Wi-Fi.
Can others please check their phones to see if when you are connected if you are seeing Wi-Fi and 4Gor 3G showing at the same time?
Can't exchange the phone yet because the stores don't have them yet
Thanks.
Both WiFi & 4G are shown in the status bar when I am conencted to WiFi. However, if you watch the icons when using an app such as the browser, you'll notice only the orange & green arrows under the WiFi icon show data usage.

Check and see if you have any Verizon Apps running in the background. For example I *think* the My Verizon Mobile App only uses the VzW network when it is on.
Yes mine does this as well. As far as I can tell it's normal behavior. My Galaxy Nexus never did it, but my wife's Droid RAZR does it.

Some people have the same issue as me others don't. Where was your phone manufactured? Mine was made in China.
Mine was made in China.
I also have general wifi issues. The wifi is extremely weak. If I go upstairs away from my router the speed drops way way down. Also while all my other devices can see a bunch of other wifi networks in my area, my S4 can only see mine.
Mine is now showing the 4G icon while connected to wifi as well. It's odd because when I first turned on and activated the phone this didn't happen. Over the course of getting the phone setup this issue popped up.
Mine phone doesn't show 4G while on wifi.
Strange how some people show both while others don't. Do you think it is something we should bring to Verizon's attention or possible return the phone? The point of WiFi is so I keep my data charges down and when I see both Icons on I assume I am using both.
Curious to see where everyone's was manufactured, Mine was made in China and it has the issue.
Make sure to disable Caller Name ID app. In other forum someone mentioned that disabling and enabling this app worked (if you use this application). If this doesn't work, there might be another app that requires Vz network.
