Potential Wifi Solution Found! - TouchPad General

I was not having the wifi troubles that two other touchpad owners I know were having. I installed Android on both of their devices, but couldn't figure out what to do to fix it and it was making me insane. Finally, we reset all our routers to a channel below 5 and found that they all connected to wifi well, HOWEVER, I found a better solution. I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but this must be a setting I fiddled with on my TP, that the other two TP owners had not fiddled with.
Go into Wifi Settings, then click the Menu button at the bottom left (the three bars)... click Advanced then click Regulatory Domain. In my touchpad, I had clicked on the 11 Channel option. On the two touchpads that could not regularly connect to wifi, neither had a selection made whatsoever under "Regulatory Domain." After clicking "11 Channels," all three touchpads can connect to wifi with no issues AT ALL, no matter the channel.
I almost can't believe this hasn't been posted in other forums yet, because it seems to be the key and much easier than setting every router you want to connect to, to a different channel.
Please let me know if this works.

It's been noted before..

..but guessing this is CM7 only, as CM9 is missing the channel selector. Maybe the option will be added to CM9 at some stage. My portable hotspot (baked-in Froyo version) is also missing the selector on the other end, which really makes things difficult if certain channels either aren't supported or yet made operative for some reason.

Wow, I searched these forums for hours trying to find a solution other than the option to change your router channel and I never saw that post. I even searched again before I reposted all over the board. C'est la vie. I knew I couldn't be the only person that had stumbled on that solution.
And yes, I'm still on CM7 until CM9 looks less buggy.

This solution is working for me so far.

Sweeeet. Thanks a lot!

I'm on cm9 alpha.6 and have had the wifi issues. I installed wifi fixer from the market and it's now rock solid and stable. Nice and simple. Hope this works for you guys too.

[Q] CM7 Thunderbolt Tethering not working

Hello XDA Developers,
I have an HTC thunderbolt, I'm running Cm7.1, the newest release that came out yesterday. My issue is that wifi or USB tethering do not work. Whether I connect usb tethering and enable the feature from the phone, or enable wifi tethering and connect through my laptop, the network connects, but then says no internet access and/or limited or no connectivity. My laptop connects to wifi internet fine.
I've had this problem for every iteration of CM7 for thunderbolt since June. Before moving to CM7, i remember trying tethering once or twice and it did not work. I've just decided now to try and get tethering working.
I've tried using the wi-fi tether app from code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list as well as barnacle wifi tether, both have the same problem.
My main questions would be:
1. Is there any reason I have overlooked as to why tethering does not work on my phone? Is there some new verizon block to tethering for root users? Are there any settings I could try to get this working?
2. Are there any known issues with CM7 and thunderbolt tethering?
3. It seems weird if it was a hardware issue since my laptop does actually connect to the phone, it just has no network connectivity.
Thanks!
I had a similar issue and fixed it by downloading the open garden wifi tethering app https://market.android.com/details?id=og.android.tether and changing the network to open on that app as well as the built in cm7 app. Then enable both apps and it should connect. Did for me.

Newest release came out about 20 minutes prior to your post CM7.1.1...check the rootz thread.
I've seen reports of this before. If memory recalls correctly, the devices weren't acquiring an IP correctly. Once you have it tethered, on the laptop/device try releasing and renewing your IP or disabling/enabling the adapter.
You are not the only person having this problem. I'm having this problem too and have not found a fix for it yet. I've found a pattern though, any ROM that I've loaded that was a build or based off of CM7, had the tethering problem. And as stated above, the problem about not acquiring and ip correctly is exactly what's happening.
Hopefully a dev or someone else can come along help resolve this problem. Apparently this problem is not very widespread as it seems that very few peeple have this problem.
Thank you everyone for your help.
keith.mcintyre26, I tried your suggestion of open garden wifi app, and it worked perfectly, just installed it and it worked. CM7 wifi tether still does not work though.

I tried the app as well and It didn't work I am in a tricky area when it comes to data coverage though so I can't help but think that might be it? Unrelated: Sometimes I lose data coverage altogether (drops out, comes back, drops out, etc) when I'm in 4G coverage areas. Maybe the two are related,

I know this is not the problem where I live as I'm in full signal.
I just got onto this ROM, after being on BAMF Forever, forever, and LOVE IT. My only complaint and possibly a show-stopper -- Wi-Fi Tether doesn't work, and neither does the built-in tether app.
I've done a complete wipe. The client connects, but doesn't DHCP.
Any ideas?

Quick update -- Open Garden works...
Strange... But I guess I'm all set
I had/have the same problem with cm7 and bamf1.86. I finally got cm7 tether last night using barnacle, but it was at .3 mbs. I have yet to top 1mbs. That was with 4g(or so it said.) I have tried the included wifi tether, usb tether, barnacle, and open garden. Nothing works properly on either rom. Signal was between -80 and at worst -90.

Seems to be a common issue across newer roms lately for wifi tether.
I got mine fixed by downloading the newest experimental build.
Once installed go into settings, Check Disable wake lock, check wifi driver reload, also check routing fix. Furthermore, make sure you select the proper device, should be the first option once you open settings.

[Q] Home wifi not found

Hi
to begin I want to applogize if this question/problem has been asaked earlier but I gave up searching the forum or the internet.
I tried diffrent roms (GalaxyTask, Overcome, Task 650 and CM9) on my p7510 but It does not find my home wifi after flashing. However, when I use Stock or CM9 it recognizes my home wifi.
Has anyone a fix for that problem?
Can you give a little more information? What type of router (make + model)? are you using 2.4ghz or 5? wifi g or n?

I have a D-link 635 using wifi n.
The strange thing is that the tab finds my home network under the Cyanogenmod9 rom and stock rom but not under the Overcome, starburst or galaxy tab rom. This makes me think that it is not a router problem. I could be wrong tough.
I tried to set up the wifi manually but it did not work. I also tried to delete it from auto recognition before flashing a new rom. Still it finds many other wifi networks but not my home network.
Yeah, that's pretty weird. I'd post your question in task's thread; he's pretty good about figuring this stuff out. Also, I have to point this out: "CM9" is not available yet; what you have is the CM9 preview. Kind of has to be said so as not to confuse anyone with the real thing...
Try switching from wifi n to b or g (in your router configuration). Might bring you closer to a solution.
Also, you could try different channels to sort things out.

I'm having wifi problems with my tab as well.
It worked fine with the stock rom. After I flashed task rom 10 the wifi range got realy bad. I mean bad like it only got 4 bars when standing right next to the router. In the next room, separated by a wall, it would got nothing. I did not change a thing in the router for months.
I thought it might be something related to HC 3.2 so I flashed the In Paris rom and the problem was gone. I might try another HC 3.2 rom to see if what happens but right now I'm probably going to wait for CM9 anyway.
btw my router is a asus rt-n56u

I´m currently on Overcome 2.1.1 (for 7500 3G Tab) and have no issue´s at all.
I can fully recommend it as a 3.2 ROM
Well my problem is that it does not find my home network at all. No matter which rom I flash except for the CM9 preview. I get a whole lot of other wifi networks but not mine. This makes me think that it is something that the rom does rather my router.
Change your router's channel plz.
Every router have 1-13 channels. It will be set to auto by default. Change it from 1-13, and you can find one to use.

touchpad Android wireless issues sorted

Should probably go in development but as a noob I can't post their yet.
Since updating to CM7 A3.5 I started having wireless issues. Would lose IP connectivity but connection up. Other wireless devices no issues and previous CM7 versions had been okay.
Updated to Xron 2.91 on here which seemed to make things worse.
Ran a wifi signal app and noticed neighbours AP on the same channel. Reconfigured mine and have had no touchpad issues since.
As all other devices were fine I didn't think of checking the frequency. Obviously the touchpad is a bit sensitive.
Hope someone else benefits from this. Thanks to those who released the Xrom and CM7 roms. Makes the touchpad a wicked cheap tablet.
Matt.
This has been talked about before and is considered one way of fixing wifi problems. If you still can't connect you could make the touchpad forget the network from settings and reconnect again. Using an app like regpon wifi keep alive helps a lot and finally a reboot helps if everything else fails
Sent from my Touchpad using Tapatalk
Also: Make sure your date/time is correct and a reboot into webOS often fixes it.
Yeah the wifi issues seem to be a hit or miss. Sometimes changing the channel works for people. Other times it's just the router. I would need to always "forget" the connection before turning my TP off then reconnect after at my house. But it works perfectly at my friends house. Thanks for the post though. It might help others with this issue.
i was just going to actually post in the thread, but like you, i am a newb with insufficient rights =)
ive done 4 touchpads, 3 different routers, cm7 3.0/3.5 and xronified 2.1 and to 2.9:
-asus rt12n w/tomato 1.28 in WDS mode with WPA1 AES on channel 11:
runs flawlessly on every revision and touchpad ive done so far.
-airlink ar670w w/ddwrt sp1 with WPA2 AES on channel 11:
initially connects but when TP goes to sleep, it will not reconnect on wakeup and strobe on and off and lock up wifi settings. cm7 3.0/3.5 and xronified 2.7/8/9
-linksys wrt54g w/hyper thibor with WPA2 AES on channel 11:
same results the airlink with ddwrt
after searching and experimenting, ive gotten both the linksys and airlink to play nice by doing the following:
1) changed encryption from WPA2 to WPA1
2) changed channels to 6 or 1 (personally i just picked whatever seemed less crowded)
3) disabled wifi sleep and scanning on TP.
4) rebooted TP into webos then back into android and rebooted router.
hope one or some of these solutions helped.
Even if your other devices weren't having issues being on the same wifi channel can cause packet loss due to interference making your Internet feel slower.
I also read that people had succes using the FXR Wifi Fix app to fix some of their wifi issues. If anyone is still having issues, you might want to try that out as well.

Download the apk and install manually from computer. just connect the touchpad to the computer and copy the file over.
The fxr app does restore my wifi connection, but does not permanently fix my disconnect issues. I am trying out the regpon app now, so hopefully this will help maintain my connections!
As far as messing with routers, this is not an option for me as I use my school's wifi network when I'm working in my lab.
I have only dropped once at home and after forgetting the network and reconnecting I never had trouble again.
First post here... Just want to say that this is an amazing community. So many cool heads willing to spend time to help. It's awesome. With guidance from many of you(I have done EXTENSIVE reading around here for days), I just did my first CM install on my TP and I am in heaven.
The solution I'very found is to tap the icon next to the back icon and then the wireless icon. Don't even know what the icons called, butit has buttons to turn. on/off wifi, Bluetooth, suond and what I'm assuming is the camera.

HOW-TO: Change your wireless routers channel to work better with the HP Touchpad

As we all know, some people are having issues with wi-fi being unpredictable and buggy on the TP. One method that seems to work more often than not is changing the wireless channel on your router. This is not a hard thing to do, but some people are having issue with accessing their routers.
This guide is for those of you on a Windows machine. Mac users, I have no idea what to tell you.
To start, we need to figure out what your IP address is. The quickest way to do this is to press Windows Key + R (Windows Key is beside left-alt). In the run box, type cmd and press enter. You should see a black box now with a blinking cursor. In this box, type ipconfig /all and press enter. Look for "Default Gateway" note this address down. Mine is 192.168.2.1 so we'll use this as the example.
Open up a new browser window or tab, and type in that IP address exactly as you noted it. You'll get a login notice, and this will differ depending on what router you have. Go to this website to get your default username and password: http://www.routerpasswords.com/.
Once you have access to your router, again, all of this will differ depending on the make and model of your router, but you need to look for a wireless tab. Once there, you need to look for something that says "Channel" or sometimes "SSID and Channel" (SSID is the name of your wireless)
After you have found the channel tab, use it to select a new channel. I've read that anything betwixt 1 through 4 works the best.
This is a vague walk-through, so please ask questions and I'll be sure to help.
:EDIT: Here's a good reference site for routers - http://www.portforward.com/

Alternative to Changing Router Settings
I've posted this on the board a few times. You may find it to be a useful alternative to adjusting your router settings, since you can't change all the routers you encounter. This solution can be done just from your settings menu:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461627
WEP works best with both CM7 and CM9 for me, no drop off wifi. Set up a virtual access point in ddwrt
just for TP with WEP . Tried WAP and TP dropping connection frequently.
I don't have a touchpad yet, but the best channel would be the one hard coded on the device. As a general rule you should always set the channel of all your devices the same. I wouldn't know how to find the default channel though on this device.
Sent from my rezound.
Actually now that im thinking about it.here is a fast way to figure out the default channel on the HP. Download wifi analyzer on your android device. Then on your tablet turn on wireless tether. On the phone scan for wireless devices and see what channel it reads.

gapps 20111230.
cwm, moboot 035.
no problems with wifi.
at all.
have restarted several times...have gone back and forth from webos, as well.
i wonder what the incidence of wifi issues is with a 5.0ghz vs a 2.4ghz signal?
not sure that it matters...but, it seems everything affects everything else.
so, worth a look?

Wifi Glitchy, but only on Android side of things

I've been playing with an TP now for about a week or so. When I got it, the WiFi worked great, on both bootups. Now if I turn off the device and restart the WiFi never works on Android unless I go through the hassle of wiping my Delvik and or playing with a code I have for SuperUser. However if I boot up in WebOS, WiFi is there and connects immediately to any WiFi in the area.
Answers?!
Thanks in advance!
Not sure if Android wifi is perhaps detailed in another topic, but i'll post my issue here too while i keep searching for a solution.
I connect easily WebOS to Nexus One using "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" ..but in CM9 the wifi loops "Obtaining IP Address, Saving.. Obtaining IP Address" ..repeatedly.
Has anyone succeeded yet with Android-to-Android via portable hotspot?
EDIT: Okay, after re-applying sledgehammer, rebooting everytime i turn on TP's wi-fi (+ few FCs), disconnecting and reconnecting a few more times, it's finally connecting.. occasionally.
I'm not even trying to use the portable hotspot, at this point just trying to connect to my router at home, which it had no problem with earlier.
But the TP keeps looping the same as you...
"Obtaining IP Address, Saving.. Obtaining IP Address"
At least I'm not getting the 'force close' box anymore. Lol
I had terrible connection issues on CM7 and after installing CM9 all seemed fine until my first reboot, then I couldn't connect at all.
A few days ago, I changed my linksys router wireless channel from 11 to 4 and have not lost connection a single time since, even after multiple reboots. I have seen several others say they have had similar success.
However this happens no matter where I'm at, or who's router I'm using. ( I currently have an ActionTec, via Verizon), and I use the TP at school, so no idea what they have set up as wireless.
Had some issues with the portable hotspot from my iPhone but after making the TP forget the connection, toggling the wifi on both devices I can pick it up again. Not too bad. No issues with my home router.
I had to do the same, I 'Forgot' the network, then I toggled the Wifi on and then off. For whatever reason it has no issues staying connected to my home network now.
However at work I have to do that forget n' toggle everytime I reboot it.
Did you do a clean install or on top of CM7? When I loaded on top, I had many problems.
After an uninstall and fresh load of CM9, I do not have any problems like I use to experience in CM7. I would remove WiFi profiles and re-connect when going from Home to Office networks. I have none of that now in CM9, knock on wood.
I had issues frequently with CM7 and wifi, as was common. I haven't had any issues with CM9 or preludedrews latest build. I follow the "kill a fly with a sledgehammer" approach. I wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache, advanced>wipe dalvik, mounts>format system, cache, data. Then installed. It takes an extra second to do all the wipes, but with experimental builds like this I always do it.
Now the only android issue I can't fix is ironically the xda app. In CM7, xron, CM9, or preludedrew's build whenever I try to do anything it FCs. That is my only complaint right now.

Thanks for the tip. My touchpad had nothing selected either in that menu. Hopefully this will solve my wifi woes!

It's on top corner. You can access menus there. However, on CM9 build I do not have the regulatory options to change the channels as you explained. It's an advanced tab that gives me access to sleep policy, etc. Are you on CM7?

# rm -rf /data/misc/wifi && reboot
this also works, but it's a pain to have to copy and paste it and run it through the terminal daily. just hoping for a solid fix. cm9 seems to be the way to go, but once they have a few more of the bugs worked out.
