Finally get keyboard dock - it's broken - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

/begin rant/
So I finally manage to track down a Keyboard dock at a Best Buy that is a 30 mile round trip. Order it online last night around 2200. I get an email this morning around noon time that they finally have it ready for pick up. They open at 10am. So it takes 2 hours to pull it off the shelf??
Drive out there, stand in line for 20 minutes. Finally get to counter, they can't locate it. Another 10 minutes. Finally get it.
Come home, open it up. Admire the beauty... go to slide it in to the tablet. It won't go. The "locking mechanism" is stuck to LOCKED.
Get out a screwdriver, pop the lock. The tablet still won't go in. Something else is wrong. Something must be bent???
I'm not making that round trip again. I'll return it to the one closer that doesn't have any docks in stock and just wait it out.
Come on ASUS.. do you have ANY Q.A. people checking this stuff???
/end rant/

...Waiting for a factual OP reply on this....

oh the anticipation is killing me

Ummm.. of course I did.. come on.... You think I'm THAT bad???
/goes and removes tabs off of tablet/
kidding... but that would have been funny.
I went out to the shed and bent the metal "tabs" to where they were supposed to be. They weren't lining up with the holes in the tablet. Got the tablet to slide into the dock finally. But I have no mouse cursor / touchpad function.
Come on!!!!!!

My keyboard dock is finally coming after 2 months of being backordered. I am so excited.
What's a good way of removing the rubber plugs without damaging the tablet? They are really in there.

I just used a knife to pop them out.. they weren't in there that bad.

I'm sure you tried it but you know that there is a key on the keyboard to disable mouse cursor / touchpad function.

Reboot and it works. Forgot to mention it, sorry

OP you can now admit you did not know about the rubber plugs and you did not know about the disable keypad key...lol. Sorry had to . I am just busting you 100%. Very happy that you got it working

This is totally true, more obvious than Adam Sandler movies
And yeah I am also glad that rubber plugs got removed and touchpad lock was turned off!

Man this thread had me grinning the whole time...

Enjoy all. I probably deserve it. LoL
It was funny now that I think about it. But seriously, I had to bend the metal tabs in the dock to get them to line up. Honest abe.

Before I used my dock, I'm not going to lie...I YouTube'd a video on the dock to make sure those rubber stoppers on the bottom of the prime actually were removeable before I attempted to remove them as they seem pretty stubborn. Granted it worked like a charm but I ALMOST had my blond moment...

question
ok so i feel completely stupid posting this but...got my keyboard dock today and it locks on/works but i noticed the locking mechanism doesnt slide all the way to right when it clicks in, it only goes halfway...not sure if its supposed to or what. I do have a skinomi skin on it but got the dock compatible version.

i clicked on the htc touch pro 2 icon and it only showed 4 items. im sorry and feel like an idiot now that i didnt even think to type in the search box.... BUT i did read your last comment and went back to the sight just now and typed in rhodium and didnt get any hits. so then i typed in touch pro 2 and low and behold there's the 3 keypad on the list. just placed an order about 2 min ago for an all black one instead of the silver one i have now... kinda like the facy that it blends in with the black outer part of the screen. anyhow, again i opologize for my mistake and i also thank you very much for your brilliant find! i wish there was more places like this out there.

Anyone dropped theirs or close calls yet?

I have been showing mine off at the office and all the time someone is holding it, especially one handed, I just cringe. My two year old likes to hold it herself while she plays the games I downloaded for her so we are always sitting and I have a pillow on her lap to rest it on. Man! I can't wait for decent cases to become available for this thing.
I hold this thing like a baby when someone else holda it I stand there and watch them carefully I'm not letting this thing hit the ground
I'm looking to get a good case asap also. I had 2 close calls. one time it almost slipped holding it one handed. althoughi love the look of the aluminum back, it is very slippery. I usually try to always hold it with 2 hands. this thing is light as a feather compared to my ipad1 but being slippery makes me Leery of one hand use till I get a case.
had another major scare when my 16 month old daughter took the thick, heavy Comcast cable remote and banged it pretty hard against the screen. you know how lil kids like to bang things in their hand up n down. I was like WoooooooA! so glad this thing has gorilla glass. no scratches or anything from that. I think because its so thin and flat, its pretty much baby proof if they bang on screen with their hands/palms. my Ipad held up to alot of abuse also and I kept it mostly in the official apple case. I have the targus truss case also that I mostly use when traveling. it provides maximum protection but adds alot of bulk/ thickness. my Ipad survived daughter constantly banging on it, drops flat on the screen on hard surface, and drops on the corner of it on hard surface. it survived it all with no screen cracks or scratches on screen. I'm pretty confident the prime can even hold up to more abuse. I don't even think ipad1 had gorilla glass. I am looking for a good case though. I saw a nice one in accessories section of a leather one at amazon. its on sale for like only $11. there's a thread or link to it in that section of prime forum. I forgot the name of it case. looks good.

My screens already lose so I need a replacement I'm scared if I drop it screen might become worse
I haven't dropped mine yet, but I took mine to work one day. My boss was talking about how she wants to buy the Ipad 3. I showed her mine and she asked to see it so I gave it to her. After looking at it, she sat it on the desk and the spun it so she could at it in landscape mode. I cringed when she did it but figured it would be fine because of the aluminum backing.
Come to find out yesterday when I looked at the back, there are about 4 small scuffs, two on each side of the logo, which I deducted probably came from my boss turning it around on the desk :'(. I guess the back isn't as tough as I thought. Luckily, I had already called game top 2 days after I bought it asking for an exchange because of screen issues. I just hope the replacement has the same build quality and screen as this one. Compared to my original transformer, the whites looked much more true on the Prime.
Dropped mine, but only from a 2 feet or so, but I tried to soften the blow with my toe. It cut it instead, haha, IT TASTED BLOOD. Anyway, careful, edges are quite sharp when falling ^_^
I did today, and look what happened

In my IT Shop that is called the "Technical Tap". Quite useful in some situations though it should be performed by a qualified technician!

I do that all the time to TF101 and the plastic has no scratch. Why Asus had to changed the back to aluminium? It causes only problems...

anyone else worried about the dock hinge loosening up?

Anyone have the dock on the og transformer and know if it hold up well? I just have a bad feeling about it holding up before it gets so loose it just flops forward or backward with no pressure.
I pre-ordered the original Transformer and dock and have used it daily since. It spends most of its time in the dock except for weekends when it's in and out several times as I use it for different purposes in different places. The latch and hinge are still as solid as ever. It's very well designed. That said, I am gentle with it as I am with all of my high-tech gadgets. I never allow anyone else to use or even touch it. I have two Archos and one no-name tablet for other family member to mess with. I am assuming the Prime has been engineered every bit as well.
Bye.

My dock hinge appears to be loose right now. When I touch the top of the tablet and move it back and forth, there's currently 3/4" of play. I take it that's not normal?

I cant say if its normal or not, but mine is sturdy as ever. I have had my dock about a month now, but as the previous poster stated i too treat mine gently.
I'm not that guy to get on someone's thread and "flame" them (i think that's what ya'll call it) but seriously guys, this is the best tablet out right now, and will be for a while, it blows the ipad 2 away and it's not even close, i think along with sections for applications and themes, accessories, and development we need a section for people who just want to worry and complane about stuff.

Great post! Thanks for the insight.
I exchanged my dock today (well, more like I returned it at Best Buy because I was on the last day of my return window) and purchased a new one.
There's absolutely no play in the hinge like there was on the last one. The last one was driving me insane. The smallest movement would cause the screen to swing from or back about 1" in distance (the top of the screen of course).
The keys, however, feel more stiff and I appear to have a hard time typing on it (a lot of keys aren't registering because I'm not pressing them exactly in the middle) but I'll keep it nevertheless. I'm sure once they're broken in, it should be better.
Just came across this guide today because my dock hinge was loose again (I'm on my 2nd dock with the same problem): http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...ns/21784-howto-solve-floppy-dock-problem.html
I only performed the "Clamp Fix" and ran into the 2 loose screws referred to in the article. My dock hinge is now like it was when I first purchased it.
Glad I came upon this thread. I bought the Infinity dock for my TF700 on Saturday and by today, any touch on the screen, even gentle, results in a bounce of about 1/2" to 3/4". I remember it being solid when I bought it.
Going to take it back this weekend.

Keyboard dock opens "itself"

Hey guys,
just thought i would be completely happy with my tfp but then i noticed the following:
my keyboard dock sort of "opens itself" at the back when i close and open it while the tablet is docked in. i only can fix it by press it together until next time i move the tablet.
i am pretty pretty sure that wasn't the case when i closed it last night...
the dock still works perfectly but there is this "cracking" noise each time i press on the "open" edges
any suggestions? i don't want to send it back because the tablet finally works...
Thanks!
Here you can see the problem:

Edit: maybe it has to do with the temperature. Actually its really very cold here in Germany. Because of that you have to heat a lot during the day. At night it becomes cold again around my working spot. After using the dock for a couple of hours now, it seems to get better.
Having the same issue with mine.
okay, then it's probably not the temperature...
i am pretty sure i could fix it by myself but i dont own the right screwdriver. anyone here who knows where i can buy one?
I'm going to keep an eye out for this, thanks for the heads-up. Honestly, if this starts happening to mine then I'm returning the whole thing and getting an ultrabook.
Definitely does not happen on mine, maybe it is temperature related or maybe a manufacturing glitch. I don't see why you'd have to return the whole tablet just to replace the dock.
i don't know if my retailer takes back just the dock...

In some international markets, the Prime was only sold in a bundle with a dock. So, it's entirely possible that only the bundle can be returned/replaced...
That's the case in Germany. 32GB bundle or 64GB tablet only.
Same issue here. It happens if you grab the tablet by the dock like you would a notebook (one hand, left front corner). The weight of the tablet is just too much for the dock's structural integrety (I LOVE StarTrek TechTalk ;-) ) so it cracks open at the opposite corner.
Since I didn't want to pry it open and refix it I just applied two stripes of Tesa to each side at the back of the dock to prevent it from opening. Works like a charm and if you take transparent stripes it's almost invisible.

This has a Torx T5 bit in it. I just tested it on my Prime and it fits perfectly.
If that doesn't work for you in Germany (it's the US Amazon) just google "Teeny Turner" and see what you can find.
I can get them for about $3 US at Microcenter, but they don't show up in their online catalog.
PM me if you can't find one for under $10 US and we'll work something out.

I believe they actually mention it in the manual that to pick up the tablet with attached dock you should grab it near the place where it docks instead of the tablet alone. They don't especially mention lifting it from the corners of the dock, but the same thing basically applies. The tablet is quite heavy and keyboard dock is very slim, so it is a good idea to lift the device by holding the tablet and the dock at the same time or holding near the place where the devices are docked.

This is correct, my keyboard did not work at all while the tablet itself was perfect and I had to return both even as I feared that the replacement tablet will be worse. And it is worse thanks to some light bleed, but it wasn't too bad.

I am pretty sure it is the screws that hold the hinge have come loose and everytime pressure is added to either side trying to close the hinge it is causing the hinge inside the dock to twist and separate the the dock. I have seen it on laptops many times. Opening it up and tightening the screws usually fixes it.

IK, will do but it just happened a few hrs ago.. smdh Outterbox need to stop playing and make 1 for the asus already..
I think only reason it messed up because it was in the dock. so by it belong connected to dock through dock hinge, it exerted extra pressure on the screen. therefore getting the result you got. I bet it would've been fine if you just sat on the tablet alone. its flat enough to where it could still survive that. this is a pretty tough tablet. its been surviving my daughter slamming my phone or cable remote against the screen really hard.
otterbox for prime would be sick! I'm sure there has to be some company already out now with a comparable type case.

I think the Prime's are susceptible to pressure. I had a similar issue with mine (colors/lines on screen but nothing else) after I put it in a new Poetic case I got. It was really, really tight to "pop in" the bottom corners and after I applied a good amount of pressure, the screen acted like that. I had to send it back to Asus and wait 3 weeks to get a replacement. A smart man would have just opened up the notch a little more (which is what I did now).

Also ST site say within 5days, and it has been pass 5 days, so should I complain and get my warranty refund back also???

If you were happy with it before you sat on it, I would get a new one, and keep the warranty incase you sit on it again lol.
I thought you had to wait like 2 months or something before you can claim the squaretrade accidental warranty?
